4 THE MANHATTAN II and by John H. Vargo, Publisher Of all the visionaries on the Hudson River there is none more proactive than Rick Scarano and Scarano Boat Works, of Albany, NY! This was proven once again when Rick created a trip from Chelsea Piers in Manhattan to Cold Spring, Poughkeepsie, Rhinecliff, Hudson and Albany on March 25, 2017! Not only was his fantastic crew on board including Rick himself, but also his management team. The trip had a two-fold purpose, to promote the SS Columbia Project as well as give his team practice at stopping at various locations on the Hudson River. He accomplished both goals with great success. 92 dignities boarded the Manhattan ll at Chelsea Piers at 8:45 Am with their first stop Cold Spring arriving at 11:30 Am. While coming up river a beautiful assortment of food was offered including raw oysters, ham, salads and other entrees. The Manhattan ll traveling at 17 miles and hour, with its gracefully hull design provided a smooth, comfortable ride for all. Arriving at Cold Spring some of the group left the boat, many taking the train back to New York while other were met by individuals who had a car ready for them. (The beauty of this concept is that the Metro North Railroad system as well as Amtrak parallel the eastern shore providing an alternative to staying on the boat until the final destination, Albany. This is truly the wave of the future for travel on the Hudson River. Todays visitor to the Hudson River is far different than the old Day Liner experience of staying on the boat for 6 to 8 hours.) The main purpose of the trip was to promote the SS Columbia Project. The SS Columbia itself rests in Buffalo, NY. To date the project has raised over $4.3 million dollars, including $1.25 million from New York State s Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. The individuals on board the Manhattan ll met the management team, including Liz McEnaney executive director of the SS Columbia Project and her colleagues who are committed to bringing this 115-year-old National Historic Landmark boat back from the brink of extinction. 4 May 2017 Find Us On Facebook at Boating On The Hudson

6 The goal of the SS Columbia Project is to restore the great tradition of Hudson River excursion boats that plied our waters for over a century, until the early 1970s. When Columbia is back in service she will reconnect New York City to the Hudson Valley cities and towns, bringing up to 1,500 passengers per trip and helping to spur heritage tourism at the historic waterfronts. In order to bring the boat back to operational status at least $15 million must be raised. No one I spoke to has any illusions that this is easy to do or will be done instantly. Yet if readers will remember Walkway Over the Hudson was merely a dream until 2007 when a new team began promoting and raising money for the reconstruction of this iconic mile long bridge in Poughkeepsie, NY. Today Walkway has had over two million individuals cross the Hudson River on it. No doubt the SS Columbia Project is in this same category. Vision The SS Columbia is the oldest surviving passenger excursion steamer in the United States and a spectacular example of America s vibrant maritime history. The SS Columbia Project (SSCP), a 501c3 nonprofit organization based in New York City, is dedicated to interpreting, restoring, and operating this 115-year-old National Historic Landmark vessel. Once restored, Columbia will: RECONNECT New York City to the Hudson Valley by reviving the great Hudson River Day Line tradition that carries passengers to waterfront cities and towns, and allows them to experience the Hudson River s rich historic, scenic, and environmental resources; REVITALIZE waterfront cities and towns through responsible heritage and cultural tourism, and job creation; Provide STEAM EDUCATION (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) programs for school-age children and adults; OPERATE as cost-effective, revenue-generating event venue and excursion vessel. About SSColumbia Built in 1902, the Nationa l Historic Landmark vessel Columbia combines a spectacular array of design, engineering and aesthetic innovations. She was designed by the great naval architect Frank Kirby and the artist Louis O. Keil, who together built the most celebrated day excursion boats. At 216 in length and 60 in breadth, Columbia was designed to carry 3,200 passengers comfortably on her five decks. She was adorned with mahogany paneling, etched and leaded glass, gilded moldings, a grand staircase and an innovative open-air ballroom. Columbia is powered by a massive, viewable 1200 horsepower triple expansion steam engine that is rare, intact and waiting to be reactivated. Columbia is now docked in the Buffalo River in Buffalo, New York where she is undergoing preparation for her tow to the Hudson River in summer Once restored and in service, the boat will serve as a cultural flagship on the Hudson River. It will offer day excursions while providing educational opportunities and a dramatic event space. In doing so, it will help rejuvenate the waterways that tie New York together. 9 On the morning of Wednesday, January 18th, at five am, of the Everett Nack Estuary Education Center in Hudson, members of the Hudson Sloop Club were notified that the named in memory of Everett Nack, a local fisherman, naturalist, Riverloft building in the North Bay area of Hudson, NY was and advocate for the river. The site for the ENEEC is an acre of burning. The building, which was recently donated to their Hudson River frontage with the remnants of an historic pier and sister organization, Kite s Nest, housed all of the Sloop Club s slips, directly south of Rick s Point and the Hudson Waterfront materials and supplies. Fortunately, the club s larger boats that Park. The Hudson Sloop Club will be administering the project live on trailers were outside and subsequently spared. The fire for the City of Hudson and running the facility with partner destroyed the entire building and everything in it. The building organizations once the project is complete. was completely demolished by the end of the day. In The Fire - Can the Hudson Sloop Club Rebuild? The group chose to name themselves after the Sloop Clubs developed by Pete Seeger and his dream of reengaging the Hudson Valley with its namesake river. The Hudson Sloop Club has operated under the belief that if members of the community are given the opportunity to enjoy, learn about and engage with the river, they will be able to build a relationship, a connection to the River, and perhaps become the natural stewards this river and environmental resource deserves. In just four short years the Hudson Sloop Club has become an integral part of the community, partnering with local organizations and offering a variety of free programming to children and adults from all walks of life. Some of the many offerings include: free after-school workshops in boat building at the local Intermediary School, where 5th and 6th graders build traditional and experimental boats. Free fishing trips both on the river and to local ponds and streams for the community. Other workshops have focused on seamanship, sailing, the river s ecology, history, and goals for future protection and public policy. In 2016 The Club, in partnership City of Hudson with was awarded $91,780 from the Hudson River Estuary Program to develop a community education center at the Hudson Riverfront. This grant will fund the building and development boatingonthehudson.com addition to replacing items lost in fire, the Sloop Club will be raising money to establish its first paid positions (and hire a new director) to help create a more sustainable and resilient organization to carry the group forward. The Sloop Club is hoping to raise $75,000 through the campaign, which they are calling the Fire Fund. The campaign will include a web based crowd funding component to allow anyone who wants to help get the Club back on the water donate easily and quickly from their computer or phone. The campaign will also include a series of events to showcase the work that the club has done over the past four years and highlight the need for support through this difficult time. For information about the Fire Fund and other fundraising events, go to the Club s website at Hudsonsloopclub.org If all goes according to plan, and the Fire Fund campaign is a success you can look forward to seeing the Hudson Sloop Club back on the river this summer. The club hopes to not only offer its annual program of classes, workshops and camps, but is looking forward to adding a new Kayak and Paddle-boarding program featuring classes, excursions and rentals on the Hudson this season. Also look out for the Hudson waterfront to start seeing the first stages of construction of the Nack Center this summer and fall. May

10 Stem To Stern Boat Restoration Stem to Stern Restoration is now located at Coeymans Landing Marina, Coeymans NY. This beautiful marina with its huge indoor work area is ideal for any kind of fiberglass or wood restoration says Mel Perkins owner of stem to stern Restoration. The company operates as an independent contractor it has 20 years experience and has been been in business for 7 years. Mel has done just about anything and everything that needs to be repaired on fiberglass or wook boats. One of the repairs that most boaters do not think about until it is to late is Transom replacement is a common repair necesity. by John H Vargo, Publisher replacing the transom in a fiberglass boat. I asked, why the transom replacement? Mel went on to explain that when a manufacturer sells a new boat to a customer the boat is completely sealed, especially the transom. However as years pass and different owners, use the boat, additional features or components are added to the stern or transom. this could be a fish finder transducer, larger or small engines, etc. These require holes to be drilled through the transom. Usually the bolt holes are sealed however certainly not to the extent that the original manufacturer had sealed them and that is where water seeps into the wood core of the transom. That is where Mel and Stem to Stern Restorations come in. He will remove the entire transom, leaving the outer fiberglass and replacing the inner wood with new wood, fiberglassing over it and making sure that it is completley sealed. Over the years Mel estimates he has done at least 25 transoms in this manner. For any questions regarding your boat call Mel Perkins at May 2017 Find Us On Facebook at Boating On The Hudson

12 BOAT TALK WITH Alex Salomatoff Alex Salomatoff. If you have a question for Master Mechanic and Owner of Alex s Marine Plus in New Windsor, NY, simply call Alex at or , AlexsMarine@aol.com I stupidly left the plug out when I put my boat in this year, Alex. Is there a way of making sure that this never occurs again? Sometimes the simplest method of solving that problem is the best. When you pull your boat from the water and unscrew the drain plug, take a tie wrap and attach the plug to the steering wheel. Even if you put the boat in the water and forget to put the plug you will soon see it hanging from the steering wheel instead of where it should be back in the boat. When Gully s Restaurant was booming at the Newburgh Boat Ramp you could sit at the bar and watch people launch boats. It was the best entertainment on a hot afternoon. One of the most interesting was watching the stern of the boat sink lower and lower in the water as the driver pulled out and parked his vehicle and trailer. By the time he got back to his tied up boat, he was stepping into two inches of water at the helm. The other incident that occurred more than once was the driver disconnecting the trailer from the car while the boat was still strapped to the trailer. Now you have a trailer and a boat floating away while the driver blamed the whole thing on whom ever was behind the wheel of the car. That is a double feature Sunday afternoon circus that should not be missed. Sadly Gully s is no longer there so you will have to sit on the edge of the ramp and watch from there. My team and I have seen it all and we love what we do. We try our very best to accommodate everyone that comes to us with a problem. During the spring, when the weather gets hot, everyone wants his or her boat in at the same time. We do our very best to help you all. Anyone who has visited Mills-Norrie knows that it is a unique gem in Dutchess County. Right at Norrie Point is a beautiful marina, set within a peaceful cove. The portion of the river close to Norrie Point is known as being a prime location for striper fishing and exploring a scenic and historic stretch of the river. Across the parking lot is the Norrie Point Environmental Center, operated by NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, which conducts research on rivers and estuaries. On occasion, public programs or school groups are hosted there. A kayak launch is located next to the boat launch at the marina. In addition, the park has a concessionaire, Atlantic Kayak Tours, which offers guided tours of the Hudson for novice and seasoned paddlers. Typical tours on the river last for about 2½ hours, with routes varying depending on tidal patterns. Tours are paced to accommodate the participants in the group. Other tours last a full day with a lunch stop. The complete schedule of tours can be found at Situated just north of the marina is the Mills-Norrie campground. The park s most beloved path is the River Trail (look for white trail markers), a nearly 2-mile-long trail that mostly runs just above the water. While other riverside trails in the Hudson Valley may have railroad tracks in direct proximity, at certain points in Mills-Norrie, the River Trail is over ½ mile away from the passing Amtrak trains. This truly is a picturesque and serene walk along the riverside. In the midst of Mills-Norrie lies the opulent mansion at Staatsburgh State Historic Site. (The estate s name is spelled with an h on the end, as the hamlet s name used to be spelled.) Staatsburgh was one of several mansions owned by financier Ogden Mills and his wife, Ruth Livingston Mills, who inherited the house from her family. The mansion underwent a massive expansion in the 1890s, when Ogden and Ruth commissioned noted architecture firm McKim, Mead & White to expand the house from 25 to 79 rooms. Today, the site is open for tours from spring to fall, plus during Christmas time, and hosts special themed tours and programs, such as a Tea & Talk series in the lavish dining room. The west lawn at Staatsburgh is revered as one of the top sledding destinations in Dutchess County in wintertime and also is the site of several outdoor concerts on select Wednesday nights during the summer. On one Sunday each October in the height of leaf-peeping season, the Gathering of Old Cars brings classic automobiles of various eras to the west lawn. Photo: Kirk Guida Route 9, where the entrance to the park s Dinsmore Golf Course is located. Originally a private 9-hole golf course used by the Millses and other prominent families in Staatsburg, the course today now features 18 holes. Views of the Catskill Mountains and Hudson River can be seen from certain spots. A restaurant, Eagles Nest II at Dinsmore, is located at the course. As if there wasn t enough to do within the park, there is plenty more to see when exploring nearby towns that are a short drive away (such as Hyde Park, Rhinebeck or Poughkeepsie) or nearby attractions (the various Great Estates and other historic destinations, the Culinary Institute of America or the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park, among others.) A seasonal docking or a transient stop at Norrie Point Marina is sure to help you cross several destinations and activities off your bucket list and serve as the perfect gateway to your Distinctly Dutchess getaway. 24 YOU MUST GET IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME! by John H. Vargo, Publisher Jim Costello on left and Carl Senter on right, pointing at a installed bow thruster. Installing bow thrusters, or for that matter stern thrusters in a boat, no matter what the size, can be a very tricky business. So says, Carl Senter and Jim Costello of Coeymans Landing Marine Service, Inc. With 24 years at the same address these two versatile mechanics are the best on the Hudson River. From Wikipedia: A bow thruster or stern thruster is a transversal propulsion device built into, or mounted to, either the bow or stern, of a ship or boat, to make it more maneuverable. Bow thrusters make docking easier, since they allow the captain to turn the vessel to port or starboard side, without using the main propulsion mechanism which requires some forward motion for turning;[1] indeed, the effectiveness of a thruster is curtailed by any forward motion due to the Coandă effect. A stern thruster is of the same principle, fitted at the stern. Large ships might have multiple bow thrusters and stern thrusters. I once saw these fantastic mechanics remove and install a complete inboard engine in one day! No nonsense, dedicated to whatever the job is, these two fellows work as one. The main reason that people install bow thrusters is the size of the slip space, coupled with strong winds and tides. It is so much easier to operate any size boat using a bow thruster to get in an tie up the boat, that many people contract with Carl and Jimmy to get the job right the first time. The installation usually takes less than a week to complete! They have installed bow thrusters on 65-foot cabin cruisers, big sail boats as well a much smaller boats down to 21 foot. 26 The NINE 0 NINE Revisited by Ralph J. Ferrusi Friday, September 9, 2016 was a Big Day for me. I ve flown in a lot of commercial airliners: Boeing 747 s, 737 s, 727 s probably even 707 s Airbus A310 s, A320 s, even Douglas DC-10 s, and, Aeroflot Tupolev s in the Soviet Union. I ve flown in small light planes, and twin-engined puddle jumpers in the US, the Caribbean, and Central America. But on September 9th, I flew in a World War II B-17G: the Collings Foundation NINE 0 NINE, and detailed this oncein-a-lifetime experience in the Boating on the Hudson & Beyond 2016 Holiday Issue, pages I ve been a big fan of the Stow, Massachusetts-based Collings Foundation for quite a while. I admire, and respect, what they re doing: in their own words: to keep the Nine-0-Nine [and their other World War II planes] flying, as a symbol of American patriotism and as a learning tool for our future generations to learn more about World War II and aviation history. Bravo... I first became aware of the Collings Foundation when their Wings of Freedom Tour visited the Westchester County Airport in September 2009, and I clambered through the NINE 0 NINE and their B-24H Witchcraft. I revisited both planes and their TP-51C Betty Jane at the Dutchess County Airport in 2014 and In 2016, a light bulb went on in my head my birthday was coming up on September 12th, so why not wake up and treat myself to a flight in the NINE 0 NINE come on, Ralph, you re not getting any younger; fork over the 450 bucks and Just Do It. I did, and I ve very glad I did. Here I am, psyched about my flight. 26 May 2017 Find Us On Facebook at Boating On The Hudson

27 Bombardier s view of the Hudson. After the flight, I received the Collings Foundation Newsletter, with a great in-flight photo of their newest acquisition, the TF-51D two-seater Mustang Toulouse Nuts. I devoured the glossy, 34-page magazine. On the back cover was Membership Information. We re now Participating Members of the Foundation. As part of the membership we received a folder that included, among other things, information sheets on each of their World War II aircraft currently on tour. The NINE 0 NINE s information sheet first told the wartime story of the B-17G serial number , then how the Foundation acquired it and restored it as the NINE 0 NINE, then the real NINE 0 NINE s wartime history. B-17G # and both the actual NINE 0 NINE and the Colling s NINE 0 NINE had very intersting histories. Here s my summary of their stories, from the Collings information sheet: B-17G # was built at Long Beach, California by the Douglas Aircraft Company and accepted by the Army Air Force on April 7, Too late for combat, it served in the Air/Sea 1st Rescue Squadron and then in the Military Air Transport Service. Get this: then in 1952 # was instrumented and subjected to the effects of three different nuclear explosions!!! After a thirteen-year cool down period it was sold as part of an 800-ton scrap pile... The new owner, Aircraft Specialties Company began restoration, that included four thousand feet of new control cable, and the replacement of all electrical wiring and instrumentation. The restored Yucca Lady eventually took to the skies again, serving twenty years as a fire bomber fighting forest fires, and was sold to boatingonthehudson.com the Collings Foundation in January 1986, and restored back to her original wartime configuration by Tom Reilly Vintage Aircraft. In August 1987 things hit the fan: while landing, the now-nine 0 NINE was caught by a severe crosswind and crashed through a chain link fence into a 100-foot ravine. The landing gear was sheared off, the chin turret and Plexiglass nose were smashed/ shattered, and the engines and propellers were torn from their mounts. There were no fatalities. Thousands of volunteer hours, and support and donations from individuals and corportations finally got her back in the air, and then to 2800 tour stop visits. Remarkable... The original 91st Bomb Group, 323rd Squadron NINE 0 NINE entered combat on February 25, 1945, eventually making eighteen trips to Berlin and overall dropping 562,000 tons of bombs. Twenty-one engine changes later, and having suffered from considerable flak damage, she completed 140 combat missions without an abort or the loss of a single crewman. Talk about remarkable... After the war, she was flown back to the United States, and...scrapped... Now, thanks to the Collings Foundation and its supporters tail number flies again, visiting over 110 cities annualy, nationwide. Makes yah proud: Bravo... 32 With recent actions by both the Army Corps of Engineers and the US Coast Guard exploring mandatory life jacket wear, we wanted to examine the range of life jackets currently available and evaluate their performance and comfort. The Foundation last looked into life jackets back in 2003 with our test of inflatable life jackets. Since then inflatables have come a long way, but we have also seen diversification in the life jacket market with new designs targeting different types of boating and water activities. Boaters can go to a store or on-line and see not only a wide array of life jacket styles, but also a wide array of performance options and related government approvals. This test aims to help you navigate the differences in performance, and also the differences in approvalswhether the approval is from the USCG, the ISO-or none at all. Testing Procedures Foundation staff gathered over 30 life jackets and grouped them into six categories for evaluation: inflatables, paddlesports, dinghy sailing, watersports, fishing, and clothing-style. A standard Coast Guardapproved Type I, Type II and Type III jacket were used as a control. Some jackets were inherently buoyant with typical foam flotation and some inflated with CO2 cylinders. Some were approved by the US Coast Guard and some had ISO designation and carried the CE (Conformite Europeene) stamp of approval. We also evaluated some buoyancy aids that had no official approval. Tests were performed in an indoor swimming pool to provide the controlled setting necessary for data collection and recording in winter weather. The Foundation s approach to testing began with fitting a life jacket on a tester while out of the water. Most jackets were simple to fit, but some, especially those with internal harnesses and crotch straps, required us to tinker a bit to obtain a proper fit. Then we had testers do a series of sits and squats, twists and broad arm movements to gauge the overall comfort level. We then asked the volunteers to jump into the pool and evaluate the jacket on fit and maneuverability. We also measured the freeboard (how high the tester floated) and the face angle to determine the positioning of the head in a static state. Our observations and measurements allowed us to make comparisons between jackets in the same category, and allowed us to draw broader conclusions across a range of jackets, such as between European and US designs and our control jackets. Life Jacket Test This article is seven years old and given to us with permission. What is important is that the effort put into this study is so good, especially for newbies to the water that I decided to run it. John H. Vargo, Publisher Control Jackets When many people hear the term life jacket, the first thing that comes to mind is a bright orange Type II jacket. They re easily recognizable, and they re on most people s boats, but they are rarely worn except in an emergency. The U.S. Coast Guard Type I, Type II and Type III vests meet strict performance requirements (see flotation standards below). The Type I life jacket is intended for offshore use, and will turn an unconscious person face up. The Type II life jacket has similar performance but has less floatation and may not always turn an unconscious person face up. And finally, the Type III life jacket will not turn an unconscious person face up, but is less bulky and is intended for use where a quick rescue is likely. Control Jackets Type I and Type II The Kent Offshore Type I life jacket and the Kent Nearshore Type II life jacket scored low on comfort among our testers. While the Type I was the only inherently buoyant jacket in our study that consistently turned our testers face up, its bulk made it challenging to swim and heavy after getting out of the water. The Type II jacket, while an inexpensive way to meet the Coast Guard requirements for carrying a life jacket aboard, was not comfortable enough to be worn for extended periods of time. Control Jackets: Type III The standard Type III life jacket is popular with the active boaters and tends to be worn more often than the bulkier Type I and Type II jackets. The Kent General Purpose Type III was easier to fit properly that the Type I and II jackets, although one of our testers, a non-boater, initially put the jacket on inside out and another tester misaligned the buckles. The life jacket we tested was an adult universal size, so while adjustable, it was far from a perfect fit on most testers. The Coast Guard Type III is the only life jacket in this control category that our testers would consider wearing routinely while boating. 32 May 2017 Find Us On Facebook at Boating On The Hudson

33 Inflatable Life Jackets Inflatable life jackets come in two basic styles, suspender-style and belt packs. The suspender-style fits over your shoulders and clips in the front and the belt pack, which is worn like a fanny pack around your waist, but is positioned in the front. Some inflatable life jackets have an auto-inflate feature that activates when submersed in water. All inflatable life jackets have a manual-inflate pull cord mechanism and an oral inflation tube. We tested three suspender-style inflatable life jackets; however there are many others on the market. Spinlock Deck Vest The most complex of the inflatables, the 150N Spinlock Deck Vest features an integral sailing harness and leg straps. It also has a line cutter to free you from entanglement, a spray hood to prevent the ingestion of water, and a strobe light to be spotted from a distance. Because of all the extra features, including the auto-inflate mechanism, the jacket was heavier and considerably harder to don and to adjust than the others. The Spinlock Deck Vest acts like a life boat for your head with a full head covering for heavy seas Baltic Winner A more basic version of the European-rated jacket was the 150N Baltic Winner. The substantially lower price is partially a result of the manual inflation (an auto-inflate version is available) and simple design relative to that of the DeckVest. The Winner has a crotch strap that proved beneficial in keeping the jacket from riding up. The Winner relies on a zipper that separates upon inflation, and in theory, makes the unit easier to repack. However, testers discovered that the zipper sometimes came apart when it wasn t supposed to. Mustang Auto Deluxe The Mustang Auto Deluxe is the mid-priced jacket in this category, and was a Staff Pick because of its all around simplicity for an inflatable life jacket and the ability to repack easily, in part because of the Velcro closure. The in-water performance was similar to the other two inflatables, but testers noted this jacket was initially tight around the neck after inflation and they had to let some air out through the oral inflation tube to improve comfort. The Mustang was the only US Coast Guard-approved life jacket tested in this category, although there are several other manufacturers that make Coast Guard-approved inflatable life jackets. Before making a purchase in this category, you should consider what type of boating you do. Testers felt the DeckVest was the best choice if you venture offshore for days at a time. It floated boatingonthehudson.com our tester high and provided a great sense of security, especially if waiting for a rescue. If nearshore boating is more your style and you ll be taking the jacket on and off, a simpler jacket with fewer accessories might be a better choice. Once deployed, all of the inflatable life jackets were difficult to swim in, but all turned our testers face up, as designed - adding peace of mind, especially if you are rendered unconscious. Staff Pick The Mustang Auto Inflatable jacket The Mustang Auto Deluxe was easy to don and to repack, making it the staff pick in the inflatable category. Paddlesport Jackets Four Paddlesport Life Jackets Paddlers expect a lot from their gear and active performance characteristics rank high on their list of requirements. Paddlesport jackets are designed with large arm openings to allow for a great range of motion for paddle strokes. Since paddlers spend the majority of their time seated, paddlesports jackets also tend to have short torsos so they don t bunch up in the neck and shoulder region. West Marine Medalist and Baltic Canoe Inherently buoyant jackets like the West Marine Medalist tend to be somewhat thicker in the front, back and sides. The CE rated Baltic Canoe was longer in the torso, but had did not have any flotation on the sides. When seated, testers felt it rode up into the neck region, despite having a crotch strap. The Medalist was favored over the Canoe since it had a more secure fit. It also was relatively easy to swim in if you capsized and had to swim back to your craft. Sterns Nova Inflatable The remaining two paddlesport jackets tested had CO2 canisters to provide the required Coast Guard buoyancy. The Sterns Nova inflatable with its many adjustment straps fit snuggly on the torso and was a comfortable paddling jacket. When inflated, the bladder is the size of a small throw pillow protruding from the front of the jacket. A strap is included so that it can be placed around the back of the neck to hold the inflated bladder in place. With the inflated bladder in the front, testers found it difficult to swim, and its rating is lower as a result. Kokotat Hybrid Inflatable The Kokotat Hybrid inflatable was the most expensive in this class at. Multiple testers found that it fit great and had some initial inherent buoyancy built into the jacket (7lbs). Its 16g canister when punctured provided additional flotation bringing the total buoyancy up to 22 lbs. This jacket was comfortable to wear uninflated and was very easy to repack after inflation. Swimming in it was a little challenging due to the bulk in the front when inflated, but overall the Kokotat was an all around solid performer with a great fit. It also had a convenient pocket for accessories like a water trail map and whistle, which made this a clear Staff Pick in this category. May

34 Dinghy Sailing Jackets Floatation devices for dinghy sailing In competitive sailing, especially small-boat dinghy regattas, participants are usually required to wear some sort of personal flotation or buoyancy aid. Since sailors often move around the boat, bend at the waist, change sides quickly, and dash below to retrieve sails, a non-bulky life jacket is vital. Buckles can potentially tangle or snag on rigging so a simple jacket with clean lines is important. The European 50N buoyancy aid is common overseas and favored by the small boat crowd in the US. We evaluated five European sailing jackets and compared them to a readily available US Coast Guard-approved jacket. The first thing testers noted, was how snugly the dinghy sailing jackets fit. Some were challenging to put on, but once adjusted, they felt like a second skin. Swimming in these jackets was easy due to the reduced bulk compared to a US. Coast Guard-approved Type III jacket. While the chance of going for a swim when dinghy sailing is high, mobility is often key for self-rescuing. In the event assistance is needed, response time is short during organized regattas. Testers in this category appreciated the slightly less flotation in favor of a smaller, but snug fitting life jacket. Baltic Dinghy Pro, Spinlock Zero, Gill Compressor and Pro Racer The Baltic Dinghy Pro and the Spinlock Zero were the easiest to put on but were the least snug initially. With some additional adjustment, the Zero fit better, but testers stated these two jackets bunched up behind the neck when seated, which The Baltic Dinghy Pro being donned and fitted. dinghy sailors do a lot. Both of the Gill models - Compressor, and Pro Racer, were harder to pull on over the head, but were comfortably snug once adjusted. A test of the Zhik buoyancy aid takes place in a The Spinlock Zero. swimming pool.testers favored the Pro Racer over the Compressor since it stayed in place better when in the water and testers felt the range of motion was also better in the Pro Racer. Zhik The Zhik buoyancy aid was the staff favorite in the dinghy sailing The Zhik in action. category because of its overall fit and comfort. It was easy to put on and fit well without riding up when in the water. The Zhik was also the least bulky of the jackets and was easy to swim in, making it the Staff Pick of this category. This is perhaps because it had more room in the shoulders than some of the other jackets. Stohlquist Kitty A close runner up to the Zhik was the US Coast Guard-approved Stohlquist Kitty ($99.99), available at West Marine. It rated well due to its overall comfort. It had multiple adjustments, which allowed for a snug fit, yet it offered a wide range of motion. The neoprene in the shoulders provided comfort and stretch, and the jacket didn t ride up in the back or neck region. Although this was a women s model, a comparable men s variety from Stohlquist is available. Watersports Life Jackets Watersports participants typically play hard and fall harder. Because of this, they demand a life jacket that moves with their body, protects them upon impact with the water, and offers some degree of flotation. In the United States, the typical life jacket for this type of activity is a Coast Guard-approved Type III life jacket. The Coast Guard label on the inside of the jacket will typically specify if a life jacket is intended for this activity. As the popularity of watersports has grown, manufacturers have responded with specialty jackets suited for aggressive riders. While some of these jackets are Coast Guard-approved, many lack the required flotation for Coast Guard-approval. Retailers of non Coast Guard-approved (non-cga) jackets are careful to specify that these jackets are only permissible for use on a private body of water or for use by riders at sanctioned competitions. Outside of those two exceptions, non-cga jacket will not meet the wear or carriage requirements in the United States. Liquid Force Cardigan An extreme example of a non-cga jacket is the Liquid Force Cardigan competition vest. Our testers noted that it was essentially a wetsuit top, though in fairness, it is marketed as such and makes no promise of flotation whatsoever. It is The Liquid Force Cardigan was a little difficult to get on. designed without straps, buckles or zippers, and has just enough padding to take the sting out of an unexpected spill. Our testers could not recommend this vest for any activity where flotation is desired or required. O Neil Outlaw Comp and Law 34 May 2017 Find Us On Facebook at Boating On The Hudson

35 Reserve Now for Spring 2017 The O Neill Outlaw Comp is also not Coast Guardapproved, but it offers substantially more flotation than the Cardigan. At first glance, you might even guess it is Coast Guard-approved. That is, until you compare it side by side to the O Neill Law ($130.00). The Law is essentially the same design, with thicker panels to provide the flotation needed to secure Coast Guard approval. Both jackets fit well, but testers favored the Outlaw over the Law because it was less bulky and hot. Ski Pro Impact Vest The first thing that struck us about the Coast Guard-approved Ski Pro Impact Vest ($49.99), was the label on the outside that stated Impact Tested to 100mph. To make such a claim, the vest must use oversized components and extra stitching to prevent the jacket from disintegrating upon impact with the water. Although speeding at 100 mph is highly unlikely for most recreational boaters, 50 mph+ isn t out of the question. The Ski Pro was the Staff Pick in this category because it had a snug yet comfortable fit. Testers did comment that the jacket gets hot after awhile, but you could wear this jacket for hours provided you were getting wet periodically. Baltic Rekord We included the European marketed Baltic Rekord ($122.63) 50N device in this category even though it is not designed for aggressive watersports performance. It looks somewhat similar to a US Coast Guard-approved Type III but is more suitable for lounging around the boat due to the fact it lacks buckles. Even though the Rekord had a drawstring to cinch the bottom of the jacket, without buckles, it rode up easily when in the water. Swimming in this jacket was challenging, and the metal zipper concerned us when we realized it could hit your teeth, if your head snapped forward. Clothing Style Life Jackets We often hear complaints that life jackets are too hot to wear for an extended period of time. The Baltic Rekord in action. However, the life jackets in this category were designed to provide warmth, which was certainly of great benefit, especially for those who boat in colder weather. boatingonthehudson.com May

38 Stearns Float Coat The Stearns Float Coat ($165.00) is every bit of a coat by definition. It has a full length front zipper, comfortable quilted interior and large fleecelined pockets. To any casual observer, it looks like your typical waist length winter jacket, but sewn inside is enough flotation to be approved as a Type III life jacket, offering a full 15.5 lbs of buoyancy. It was a favorite of the men testers since it was so simple to wear. It wasn t tight or restrictive. However, the loose fit was somewhat problematic when attempting to swim in the jacket. Stormy Seas Newport, North Pacific and Alaskan Sweater The Stormy Seas line of jackets, created by an Alaskan fisherman, was designed specifically for recreational and working waterman. Each design in the Stormy Seas line is a functional piece of clothing, designed to be warm and wearble with an inflatable bladder sewn in to provide buoyancy when manually deployed. Despite not being Coast Guardapproved, these jackets all have 35lbs of buoyancy, the most of any of the jackets we tested, but testers found they needed to top off the jackets using the manual inflation tube. The Stormy Seas Newport is a vest style life jacket that is very comfortable out of the water. It was stylish and hard to differentiate from a typical fleece-lined nylon vest. It had no substantial adjustments so it is not restrictive and inflates easily with a pull of a lanyard. However, when fully inflated the zipper tended to come down which made testers nervous that they would eventually slip out of the vest. None of the Stormy Seas jackets were auto-inflatable or Coast Guardapproved. All were difficult to swim in while wearing. However, in colder water it is best to conserve energy and draw your legs and arms to your core, and await rescue. Baltic Surf & Turf A final product in this category, and a hands-down Staff Pick, was the Baltic Surf & Turf ($112.13). The Surf & Turf is a refreshing new design that looked like a down vest and was almost as feather-light. This jacket was easily the most stylish in our line-up and was envied by all, especially the ladies. You could wear it around town as a late fall or early spring jacket and its comfort range could be extended with proper layering. Its in-water performance was good too. Because this 50N rated device provided the least amount of flotation of any in this category it was not very bulky and swimming short distances was relatively easy. An optional crotch strap kept the jacket low and in place. The Surf and Turf was a Staff Pick due to its comfort on land and in the water, and its fashionable styling. Staff Pick - The Baltic Surf & Turf Comfortable & Stylish Fishing Style Jackets Coast Guard statistics show that anglers are particularly vulnerable as they often boat alone and in cold weather. A few lifejackets sit side by side. For this reason, the BoatUS Foundation has worked closely with the angling community on boating safety for over a decade. Among the excuses given by anglers for not wearing a life jacket is they get in the way of casting a rod. Manufacturers of life jackets have attempted to address these concerns by repositioning flotation in these active wear life jackets and making them more multi-functional. Stormy Seas Expedition The Stormy Seas Expedition looks like a typical fly fishing vest. It has many pockets and was the thinnest and lightest jacket in this category. It also offered the greatest range of hip and waist motion. It was the only fishing vest to use a small CO cylinder to inflate an internal bladder. Like all of the inflatable life jackets we tested, it was challenging to swim in effectively, however, it can always be deflated slightly if necessary and re-inflated with the oral inflation tube. The Baltic Fisherman, Stearns Sport Vest and Onyx Classic Fishing Vest are all constructed with inherently buoyant material. Each vest features adjustable belts, large armholes and pockets for small gear. The Baltic was longer in the waist than the others and was noticeably heavier than the others when exiting the water. The Stearns and the Onyx had large drain holes or mesh to help alleviate this issue. Staff Pick - The Onyx Classic Fishing Vest. 38 May 2017 Find Us On Facebook at Boating On The Hudson

39 The favorite in this group and our Staff Pick was the Onyx, available at West Marine. It edged out the Stearns slightly because the straps prevented the vest from riding up or shifting. The back of the vest also has some flotation that was designed to ride up slightly to keep the neck and head positioned up when treading water, which made our testers feel more secure. The price of the Onyx was also reasonable, especially when you consider it is a fishing vest and life jacket in one. RE-POWER When it comes to Repower, Experience Counts! Call us to discuss your repower options. Experience the fuel savings, reliability and lower maintenance our expert repower team can provide. Final Thoughts Of the 30 jackets evaluated by the Foundation, all but one would most likely help keep you afloat when worn and adjusted properly. The one exception in the watersports category, the Liquid Cardigan, was so thin that we couldn t recommend it. It was not Coast Guard-approved. Overall many of the ISO-approved jackets, available primarily on the European market, performed like similarly styled USCGapproved jackets. In fact, two of our six staff Picks were not USCG-approved, but ISO-approved jackets. These jackets do not currently meet the USCG carriage requirements, and can be difficult to find in the US. Upon closer inspection one type of the ISO approved jackets, the level 50 approved buoyancy aids, did offer less flotation, but rated consistently higher in overall comfort. Comfort can be costly. All of our Staff Picks in each category cost more than the basic Type II or Type III USCG-approved jackets. The highest price jackets were not always the top performers, but it does seem that the most comfortable jackets, the ones that are more likely to be worn, require an investment. Our least expensive Staff Picks were in the watersports and fishing categories and at $49.99 are still more than twice the price of the basic universal fit Type III USCG jacket tested. Considering your boating activity is essential in choosing the best jacket for you. Many of the inflatable life jackets offered unmatched flotation, but proved to be too cumbersome should you need to perform a self rescue or swim any distance. Many of the buoyancy aids and less bulky jackets allowed testers greater comfort when dry and increased mobility in the water, but lacked the freeboard see with USCG-approved jackets. Below are some tip for selecting the best jacket for you learned from our tests. When possible, we used several testers to evaluate each jacket for a variety of sizes and body types. Your experience may be different from our testers. The bottom line is to select a life jacket that you will wear and that is a good fit. Tips for selecting the right jacket for you: Select a jacket based on your intended activity. Check out the label on the jacket or marketing material to see if it appropriate for your intended use. Purchase a jacket that is sized for you, not a universal fit. Make your life jacket a piece of personal safety gear, and not intended general use. The more adjustments, the better they tend to fit. However, the more adjustments there are, the harder they are to get into. Also, extra buckles and straps can snag. boatingonthehudson.com Special SPRING Fall 2017 Incentive Purchase Plans SPECIALS! Our 34 th Year! 103 Main St. Catskill, NY A comfortable fit is paramount. If it s not comfortable, you won t wear it. If boating in hot weather, consider an inflatable life jacket. If boating in the cold, consider a float coat. Consider a crotch strap. Even though it sounds uncomfortable, every life jacket with a crotch strap performed well it keeps the life jacket from riding up in the water. You don t have to look like a geek. There are a ton of new designs that border on safety chic, especially those offered by European designers. Know the laws regarding use and approval of life jackets. In the United States, there must be a properly sized life jacket for each person aboard a recreational vessel. Depending on age, type of jacket you have, time of year, where you boat, and what type of boating, you may be required to wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket. May

48 John Burroughs/ Black Creek Corridor Connected Wildlife Habitats & Recreational Areas by Diane L. Dintruff, Ph.D. While this points out the unique features of Kayaking it should not take anyone too long to figure out that these areas are all wonderful fishing areas as well. Large Mouth Bass, Trout, Striped Bass (at the mouth of Black Creek where it goes into the river, and large Brown Trout that come in from the river to spawn) are all available to anyone who has the time and tenacity to figure it all out! Good luck. John H. Vargo, Publisher The Towns of Lloyd and Esopus in Ulster County New York have natural, historic, undeveloped areas laying between two man made tourist areas: the Walkway over the Hudson and the historic Rondout area of Kingston. The beauty of this region was appreciated by wealthy families (e.g. the Astors, Durkees, Paynes, Rockefellers, Smiths, Tiffanys and Whitneys) who built summer residences in Esopus during the early 19th Century, and made famous by the naturalist and nature essayist John Burroughs. Both towns have made, and are continuing to make strides towards preserving their heritage and striking visual landscapes by promoting preservation and outdoor activities on these historical lands. Local kayakers, hikers, and bicyclists have joined the towns and professional organizations in spreading awareness of the region by word of mouth and through clubs, yahoo, google and meet-up groups. In December 2016, National Geographic Magazine highlighted Ulster County and the John Burroughs/Black Creek Corridor (JB/BC) in a case study poster titled Dreaming Green: com/magazine/2016/12/greenspacessupplement/. Currently, although published in a global publication and accessible to the public, the JB/BC Corridor is still under planning and development. DEC, Scenic Hudson, the John Burroughs Association, and the Walkway over the Hudson Nonprofit Organization are in the process of creating signage, making decisions and writing grants to make the JB/BC Corridor more accessible and user friendly. Until the difficult work of balancing preserving nature with opening up natural space to the public is completed, this article shows paddlers existing access points to Black Creek (See map on page 44) and guides them to a few of the many wonderful sights to look for in this greater Walkway region. 48 May 2017 Find Us On Facebook at Boating On The Hudson

49 Gaining access to Black Creek from the Walkway over the Hudson. The JB/BC Corridor forms the north west section of the greater Walkway region. In addition to cars, Amtrak and Metro North provide access to the Walkway over the Hudson. The JB/BC Corridor is what you see as you look north west from the Walkway over the Hudson, or from Waryas Park or the Ice House Restaurant in Poughkeepsie. When you continue to walk or bicycle west after crossing the Walkway over the Hudson, you connect to the Highland Rail Trail that crosses over Black Creek. 51 Black Creek south from Rt.299. Kayak access off Rt. 299 To kayak under the Highland Rail Trail, paddlers generally enter Black Creek just south of route 299. The Town of Lloyd, the Lloyd Environmental Conservation Council and the Hudson Valley boatingonthehudson.com Greenway Communities Council contributed to this Kayak and Canoe Launch. Black Creek takes a winding route through tall vegetation as one paddles south from these launches. Black Creek flows north and at times after a heavy rain, the current in this stretch of Black Creek can be quite strong. Usually paddlers can make it under the Highland Rail Trail bridge without difficulty. However further south, a strong current combined with the sharp turn just beyond the low bridge under New Paltz Road has resulted in a few capsizes and occasional bumps on the head from hitting the low bridge. Continuing even further south may involve portages. Paddling north from 299 towards Lake Chodikee, the aquatic vegetation tends to be lower consisting mostly of white water lilies, yellow spadderdock, yellow iris, and invasive purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) similar to those seen along Black Creek as accessed from the DEC launch onto Lake Chodikee. 56 Lake Chodikee access to Black Creek The DEC launch off North Chodikee Road offers easy access for car top boats onto the 63 acre Lake Chodikee. Generally, the lake is calm and idyllic. Occasionally a strong wind blows over the lake making it difficult for novice paddlers. Black Creek passes through Lake Chodikee forming an almost magical, winding path of lilies and spadderdock during their peak blooming season. Many forms of wildlife make Lake Chodikee and Black Creek their home. Once known for its blue heron rookery, now only a couple of nests remain atop the tall barren trees having survived superstorm Sandy. Numerous beaver lodges can be seen on this area of Black Creek, and when water is low, beaver dams impede paddlers Paddling Black Creek from Lake Chodikee. The lake shore is mostly wetlands. There are two facilities that can be seen from Chodikee Lake. Camp Karlin Stolin, an Orthodox Jewish summer camp, on the west shore and HRC, the Highland Residential Center, is on the east shore. Camp Karlin Stolin had a bunk house fire in the spring of 2016 which has been replaced with a large dining room. HRC is a juvenile correctional facility run by the Office of Children & Family Services and the Division of Juvenile Justice and Opportunities for Youth (DJJOY). It houses mostly black and hispanic juvenile offenders from New York City. HRC s current population is 36 of its budgeted 50 client potential. HRC provides the easement for the DEC access dock on Chodikee Lake. Connecting to the Chodikee Trail Paddling north on Black Creek from Lake Chodikee, when you hear the sound of falling water, pull off on the east side of the creek just before the rapids to picnic. A few white water kayakers claimed to have paddled the rapids from the Black Creek Preserve to the Hudson and other rapids along Black Creek. However, I ve never seen any documented white water put-ins or portages, or heard of efforts to remove dangerous strainers in white water stretches of the creek. Hiking, Camping and other Accommodations I would be remiss if I didn t thank the Towns of Esopus and Lloyd, Scenic Hudson, the John Burroughs and Greenway Associations for preserving our natural areas, and developing many fine walking/hiking trails for citizens and visitors to enjoy. I especially want to express my gratitude to them for supporting the 2014 Esopus Explorers walking program developed by Marion Zimmer and myself, and to Scenic Hudson for honoring the Town of Esopus with their Hudson Valley Hero Award. In the Esopus Explorers program participants earned a badge for walking 5 of its trails. There was a great deal of interest in the Explorers program and the brochures were quickly picked up. However it proved unrealistic to expect a small town to have the matching funds to repeatedly print the brochures. Perhaps now that Esopus southern trails are integral to the greater walkway region, a walkway region badge program can be developed as an advertising mechanism encouraging tourism, better health practices and appreciation of nature in the mid-hudson valley region. Suspension Bridge at Black Creek Preserve. Hiking trail maps or signage for Esopus are under development or exist thanks to Scenic Hudson, the Hudson River Greenway, and the Walkway over the Hudson. 60 Your Insurance with Cathy Karas. IT S MAY- ANCHORS AWEIGH! Whatever type of vessel(s) you have, seeing the leaves on the trees, grass and flowers coming up and birds singing signal the start of the boating season! When we had that warm spell in February I actually saw someone out in a small outboard on the Hudson. Besides the fact that he must have had to at least get his feet wet in the launching process, this is a crazy idea, especially to undertake by yourself since it would only be minutes before hypothermia would set in if you fell in. I hope this article will give you pause to think about the process involved before you go out on your first trip. In 30+ years as an insurance broker, I have heard many stories of boating losses, and in my opinion some may have been prevented by following proper cautionary measures. Before getting underway, there are things to do to make your trip enjoyable and safer. Even if you do not do the preparation or launching yourself, and have a marine mechanic, marina or boat club do it for you, it is important to have a checklist. I have to admit my own mistake a few years ago after launching my Sea Doo on my maiden voyage. I forgot to check that the drain plugs were in! Good thing I noticed this right away or after I tied it up and returned the next morning I most likely would have been looking at it fully submerged. Since then, a checklist, in writing is important. I think the bigger the vessel, the more details there are to remember and items you need to have on board to be able to go on that first trip. Leaving behind one item, or neglecting to check all of your systems can result in a loss or not being able to go out on that adventure as planned. Besides a basic checklist, you should be sure that every time you go out at least one other person knows where you are, and if you have guests on board that they all know where the life jackets are and understand the basics of operation in an emergency if you cannot operate the boat in the event of a medical condition, or fall overboard. This sounds like a remote possibility, but I have read many articles about captains and boat operators having heart attacks, strokes or falling overboard climbing to the flybridge, over the side photo: while tending to lines, or being thrown after striking a submerged object. You can customize your own checklist, but here are some suggestions from mine you may want to incorporate. 1. Your boat has been stored for months, shrink wrapped outside or in dry storage. Check for any damage and hopefully no critters have made a home in your engine or cabin. 2. Check all systems, bilge pumps, clamps, hoses, depth finders, propellers and shafts, ship to shore radio, boarding ladders and drain plugs. If you are launching by trailer you may want to start up the engine for a minute to make sure it runs before going through the whole process of putting it in the water. 3. Check all safety equipment. You need life jackets (don t forget your pets!), extra lines and fenders as you never know what is going to happen and where you might have to tie up. Be sure to have the proper size anchor, emergency flag, whistle, flares, first aid 60 May 2017 Find Us On Facebook at Boating On The Hudson

61 kit, tools, duct tape, sunscreen, change of clothes, emergency food provisions, water and your cell phone. Even the storage compartment on a jet ski can hold these items, obviously scaled down in quantity and size. 4. Do you have insurance? Although not required by New York State, as car insurance is, everyone should have at least liability insurance in the event of bodily injury or property damage caused by your negligence. Keep in mind you do not have to have done something wrong to be sued. A row of boats catch on fire at your yacht club and all the owners think it was something you did or as a result from an electrical malfunction on your boat. You strike a person in the water where you have never seen anyone swimming before and they suffer a severe head injury. Another boat strikes you as you prepare to dock, but they think it was your error and there are no witnesses. These are the types of incidents where your liability insurance can provide legal defense for you and payment if you were to be found out fault and your policy covers the type of claim presented. Hull and machinery insurance is usually voluntary unless you have a loan and the lender requires it. What would be your out of pocket loss if your boat completely destroyed? You need to weigh the value of the boat against the cost of the insurance and factor in the deductible to see if it makes sense to have the hull and machinery insurance. This type of coverage is primarily based on value, but the year, make and model also have a role in determining cost. Check to see if you have this, what your limit it and if you have replacement boatingonthehudson.com cost, agreed value or actual cash value (with depreciation) coverage. Obviously the last being the least advantageous. OK so now you have reviewed your checklist, briefed your passengers or let someone know where you are setting out for if you are going solo, and are ready for your first voyage of Check your gas level and always have more than you need. Unlike a car, the availability to fuel up is infrequent and it s possible your planned stop could be out of fuel or unexpectedly closed! Being prepared will make your boating experience more enjoyable. Taking the boater s safety or Coast Guard course, even if you have taken it before, may refresh your memory of some of the basics, and often can provide a discount on your boat policy. We are all excited to get out there, but give some thought to the preparation process. 65 Phone (914) Fax (914) Vicky Ziluck Creative Counterpart Ivey Loves Clams Gluten Free photo: shipmonk.co.uk CLAM UP AND READ! This month s recipe research, gave us a new favorite and todays Gluten Free trend has really worked out in our favor. So we decided it was time I talk to you about our lovely bi-valve, the clam. If I were on death row, my last request would be to order in Baked Clams from La Parma II in Huntington LI. I was just there last weekend for a celebration It is still incredible. La Parma is my old, hometown, Wednesday-family night dinner place. It was simply and still is, heaven! Growing up, my Sister and I not only had dinner there with our Parent s at least one night a week, but spent most of our teenage dating careers explaining to various boys why our parents were boatingonthehudson.com May

66 sitting 6 tables away. I wonder what Freud would say about that one? Back in the old days, Anthony, La Parma s owner, used to let me come back there and hang out in the kitchen while he cooked. I loved being in that kitchen, I felt so comfortable there. I still do. Watching Anthony work with the food, and all the commotion that was going on around me, I knew I had to be in the food business. And Anthony, I m takin every recipe I saw in that kitchen to the grave, Babe. This is simply homage to you. My lips are sealed. So here I am thinking about my favorite restaurant and I m getting a hankering for those Baked Clams. When I want something, there is usually very little that can stand in my way. Except maybe 2 kids to schlep, a big bridge and a Husband to cajole into Sunday traffic on the Long Island Expressway. Oh, and one more minor obstacle I forgot to mention. I don t eat starch anymore - in any form. Baked Clams have are you supposed to do? Well, I ll tell ya Darlin go wash your hands, you re about to get dirty. Ivey s Gluten-Free Baked Clams 2 Dozen Little Neck Clams shucked; juice & shells reserved 1 Cup finely chopped raw cauliflower ½ Pkg. Bacon room temp. and sliced lengthwise, chopped very small ½ Cup + ¼ Cup Parmesan Cheese 1 Bunch Chives chopped and separated into 2 portions Clam Juice White Wine or Beer - optional Lemon juice for serving - optional Preheat your oven to 420 Lay the clamshells next to each other in a baking dish Situate the Bacon, ½ the Chives & ½ Cup of the Parmesan Cheese into a large bowl and toss thoroughly using your fingers until well combined. (No, it doesn t come out the same with a spoon!) You want the mixture to be soft, when you pinch it softly between your fingers, it should stand at attention. Lay a clam in each of the shells and plop a small blob of the Well, now what? The object of my drool is not only far away, it s contraband..sure, make me want it even more. Well Ivey (said my brain), stop salivating, get your tushie off the couch and go to Mt. Kisco. Mt. Kisco Seafood, located at 477 Lexington Avenue in Mt. Kisco New York is a terrific place to buy your seafood. It s one of the best seafood places I ve found in Westchester to date. It s spotless, it smells like a fresh ocean not the fish that swim in it - and they ll happily shuck your clams for you. Call in your order. Now that s what I call customer service. Ask for Joe (914) When you order your clams from Mt. Kisco Seafood, asked for them to be shucked, the clam juice reserved and tell then you want to keep the shells. As far as scrubbing shellfish goes, everyone has their own thoughts on the subject. I like to suck the clams right off the shell when I eat them. I know, I know some people use a fork. Anything that goes in my mouth, get s washed first. So yes, I do pre scrub my shells when I make baked clams. Now you have the clams you have the motivation, what mixture on the top of each. Yes, you are still using your hands. Sprinkle the tops of each clam with the extra ¼ Cup Parmesan Cheese and drizzle with a little Magic Oil. Add 1 Cup Total Liquid to the bottom of the pan; it can be Clam Juice, White Wine, Beer or Water (I use ½ Clam Juice and ½ White Wine) Put the pan on the top shelf of the 420 oven and check after 10 minutes. Crack open the oven door and turn on the broiler. Hang out for 2 66 May 2017 Find Us On Facebook at Boating On The Hudson

67 minutes or so, keeping a very close eye on your clams. You want them to be golden brown on top and for the cheese to be bubbly. Let them cool for a few minutes before serving. Top the clams with the other ½ chopped chives and squeeze some luscious, juicy lemon on top. So, now what? Dear Ivey, I made your bacon cauliflower baked clam recipe and I had a lot of left over filling. Is there anything I can do with it? So, Vicky and I came up with an incredible idea while in the test kitchen this month, working on this article for you. Clam pie. It is also gluten free, and if it wouldn t give the direct opposite impression, I would want to call it clam pizza pie. Because we cut it up into slices perfectly with a pizza cutter. Knifes proved tricky when aiming for precision in plating this dish. CLAM LOVE PIE We too, had a lot of filling left to clam ratio. So I decided to throw them all in together. And, no, I did not have extra clamshells lying within my reach. Yes, of course, I do have the old fashioned 70 s scallop shells my Mom used to make her baked clams in, but I m not making that recipe, and besides, they are currently stored in my attic. Yeah, I m a serious hoarder when it comes to kitchen, cooking and entertaining equipment. I have a feeling you are not too surprised? But, I DID have a small, Le Cruset, round ceramic baking dish. I buttered it up very well, extremely well, can t use too much butter I figured, and simply piled all of the filling into the heavily buttered baking dish. I set the oven temperature at a trusty 420 and topped the dish with additional Parmesan cheese. Oh my ever-lovin goodness. I can t even curse, this is so delightful only savory kind things fly out of my mouth while I find myself shoving another piece into my mouth so hard. Seriously, you gotta try this. So all that extra butter that I used? Yeah, well, it served as not only a vehicle to allow thorough cooking and the desired crackling crust on top, but it also made the pan almost non-stick, almost. That was the only trick, as soon as it came out of the oven, it was very pliable, the cheese was still hot and soft and melty. So I found a friendly looking thin spatula and stuck him underneath the clam pie all around the edges at first. Once I felt her give a little, I knew I could push the spatula all the way underneath and wiggle it back and forth to ensure the hot clam mix turned pie would not become sticky icky. When I turned the pie out of the baking dish I was pleased to see that her bottom was nice and browned by all the butter and the contact with the ceramic surface. I do not know if I am capable of expressing my delight, other than to write this article and share the idea with you too. Thank you Shelly S. for your question, you inspired deliciousness! We made instructional videos for you to either scan here in the magazine with your smartphone or go directly to YouTube. Also, last, but certainly NOT LEAST, is a wonderful announcement from the girls at Ivey s In My Kitchen, our delicious, restorative, comforting Biologically Better Beef Bone Broth is NOW AVAILABLE FOR SALE!!! We have affectionately named it Magic Broth. Remember our recent February-March 2017 article? Well, between the contact, s and demand, which turned out to be so high, that we just HAD to make it and make it available to everyone. Poor John Vargo, he has been running around town giving broth to all of his good friends who have been feeling poorly this flu season. He is so good at giving back. Let s take a load off his back. Now you can buy it. Liz has a sweet little store on her property at the Shunpike Dairy that we get all our raw milk, eggs, beef, pork, and now our beef broth from. C mon and get it. 70 A SPECK IN THE SEA JOHN ALDRIDGE and ANTHONY SOSINSKI A BOOK REVIEW by John H. Vargo, Publisher If you live to be as old as I am you will realize that certain people in your lifetime and many before survive all the terrible things that could possibly happen to a person to live to a ripe old age. Some call it luck, but I think it is far more than that, a combination of skill, will, and tenacity, whatever. John Aldridge is one of these people. This book is now being made into a movie. What is interesting about that is how the partners in the lobster boat have become partners in the book and the movie. Truly smart men with very smart advisors. 78 Bridge St. Newburgh, NY May 2017 Find Us On Facebook at Boating On The Hudson

80 2006 Over a Decade with Dr. Gel 2017 Ask Dr. Gel by Dave Weakley Dave Weakley is the owner of American Boat Restoration and has been helping Northeastern boaters keep their boats in fine trim and good repair for over 40 years. me or call me with your questions! I ll be happy to help you out americanboatrestoration.com / boatrepair@aol.com / Office: / Cell: Gelcoat Repairs - There s more to it than meets the eye! Have you ever Seen a fresh repair turn gray? Noticed a shiny ring around the repair? I call that a halo Not been able to polish a repaired area? Observed deep scratches in the repair that you can t feel? describe those as comet tails Had a repair spot that is dark with tiny little pin holes in it? Have gelcoat plug up your sand paper? Have the color not match? This happens a lot! Seen gelcoat peeling off the boat and actually be able to scrape off with a putty knife? All of these results are attributed to using the wrong methods and materials! Dr Gel: I bought a Gelcoat Repair Kit and did a minor repair. The repair is still tacky, the color does not match, and it looks terrible! Help! Gelcoat repairs can be challenging even for the professional! There is a lot you need to know about it before you attempt a repair. Gelcoat is a very unique surface over fiber reinforced composite made of polyester. The gelcoat provides a highquality finish made even more attractive using color pigments. I With proper care a good surface should last for years! Successful gelcoat repair is affected by many things including age, temperature, humidity, hardener, surfacing agent, additives, and application methods. How much color fade the boat has will also determine how nice the repair will look. AGE- Gelcoat has a shelf life! Hopefully that Repair Kit you used was fresh and not sitting on the shelf for a couple of years! Gelcoat is good usually for up to 6 months. I won t use gelcoat if it is more than 3 months old. There are chemicals in the gelcoat that evaporate over time. The chemicals are crucial to insure a proper cure. Once a boat manufacturer sent unknown to me, outdated gelcoat to do a warranty repair! I sprayed the gelcoat and it would not fully cure it was TACKY! Hummm, brand new boat, outdated gelcoat. I asked the manufacturer to please ship me some fresh gelcoat! Repair was redone successfully. That will only happen to me once! TEMPERATURE Gelcoat is very temperature sensitive. Apply it in a minimum temp. of 68 degrees - maximum 98 degrees. I don t recommend 98 degrees! I think degrees is the ideal temperature to work in. It is very important the boat and gelcoat be the same temperature when applying the gelcoat. 80 May 2017 Find Us On Facebook at Boating On The Hudson

81 HUMIDITY Gelcoat and water don t like each other. If there is heavy humidity in the air, wait to do your repair. A humid environment will create pin holes and affect the color and adhesion. These are just three of many problems humidity will cause. HARDENER- mekp - There is 50% mekp hardener for gelcoat and another type of mekp 9% for fiberglass resin. Be sure you have the proper type! At 68 degrees, 1- oz. of gelcoat will require 12 eye dropper drops of mekp. At 73 degrees you will need 9 drops of mekp, 88 degrees use 6 drops. 98 degrees requires 4 drops but trust me, at 98 degrees you won t get it from the mixing cup to the boat before it hardens. Too much mekp will change the color. Using the wrong mekp will affect the cure. SURFACING AGENT- A must! You need to apply a surfacing agent over gelcoat because air inhibits the curing of it. Cellophane is the type often included in Repair Kits. It will do the trick if you get a good enough seal! Two other types used by professionals are sprayed on PVA (Polyvinyl Alcohol) or a mixture of Styrene/Paraffin Wax added to gelcoat before it is applied. ADDITIVES- Using too much pigment while you are trying to get a color match will retard your cure. It will cause a big problem! APPLICATION METHODS- When you use a popsicle stick or brush to apply the gelcoat, it is often applied too thick & fast. The thicker the gelcoat, the hotter the cure. Too much heat developing quickly will affect the color. Gelcoat is designed to be applied with a spray gun resulting in a better color match and finished product. GELCOAT COLOR FADE It is important to compound the boat, make it look as nice as possible. You are now matching the color of the boat and not the dirty faded gelcoat. With all this information in mind, try your repair again. You may be successful! Finally there is a lot of bad, inaccurate and misleading information on line on how to do successful gelcoat repairs! Key words here are successful repairs. The Forums and other so called professional instructions are most often w-r-o-n-g! Save yourself time and money and either have your repairs done by a professional or take one of my Gelcoat-Fiberglass-Polyflake Repair Training classes. I can teach you the proper gelcoat repair techniques saving you lots of heartache and frustration! 1. You may make a bigger mess than you started with. 2. Repairing the Repairs 3. That s the way it should look! boatingonthehudson.com May

82 Questions from our readers: My trailer is my boats worst enemy. I have a roller trailer and every time I put my boat on it the boat ends up crooked. The trailer has caused damage to the gelcoat and fiberglass on the keel and around bow eye. Is there anything I can do without buying a new trailer? F.T. Catskill, NY. First of all, it is possible you may be backing your trailer in the water too deep. A rule of thumb is to back your trailer in far enough to just submerge your fenders. Keep in mind every trailer is different! Secondly, you want to make sure your trailer has been adjusted properly to fit your boat. We can check it or you can take it to your favorite marina. You want to be sure your rollers are running between the strikes. The bow stop on the winch stand should be wide enough so you don t have to be a sharp shooter to hit the center. There are guide posts that can be installed on the trailer. Just remember they are guides not bumpers! Personally, I prefer bunk trailers over roller trailers. I fix damage all the time caused by roller trailers. Each roller supports only approx. 4-6 square area of the hull. In some cases if you look carefully along the bottom of your boat you can see indentations the rollers cause. It is best to have a drive on bunk trailer in my opinion. In most situations a roller trailer can be converted into a bunk trailer. A properly adjusted bunk trailer will support the entire hull! us your questions! boatrepair@aol.com When I purchased my 46 boat it had bottom paint on it. Last spring I noticed areas of missing paint and had another application of bottom paint put on. At the beginning of this season I saw areas of flaking and peeling paint exposing shiny gelcoat. Why isn t the paint staying on it? J.B. Albany,NY During my inspection of Joe s hull I observed many areas of exposed glossy gelcoat and was able to easily peel sections of the bottom paint off the boat indicating right away that the hull was not correctly prepped for bottom paint. Also during the inspection, I found stress cracks along the port and starboard sides under the waterline. It was obvious the bottom paint had to be removed and I proceeded to do so. As I removed the paint, I discovered additional cracks and impact fractures wide enough to absorb some serious water. Joe wanted all the problems repaired and the hull properly prepared for new bottom paint. I highly recommended the application of a gelcoat barrier protection system before any further bottom paint was applied to protect the hull from additional water absorption and osmosis damage. Epoxy barrier is made of unique resins and has very high water resistance properties sealing the hull from the water. Epoxy barrier on a boat is similar to shingles on a roof, helping to eliminate water intrusion. Using the barrier coating should minimize the possibility of reoccurrence of damage and is cheap insurance that will help extend the life of the boat. After the application of a barrier coat the hull was ready for the proper bottom paint. I advised not to to cheap out on the type of bottom paint to use. The four main types to choose from are; Self-Polishing, Hard, Performance & Specialty. It is important to choose the right one for the fouling type the boat will be exposed to. Clearly, Joe s hull was not properly prepped for the bottom paint application. Fortunately, in his case removing the bottom paint exposed some damages that were able to be repaired before serious issues developed such as osmotic blisters. Bottom line is, good preparation is essential to insure the best protection for your hull. Preparing it for bottom paint is labor intensive and often not done properly. Can you image sanding a 46 from bow to stern with 80 grit sand paper on a 6 sander? It s like scrubbing the deck of a ship with a toothbrush! An unpainted boat needs to be first cleaned of all contaminates; dirt, oils, wax, etc. If the boat is brand new it will have a mold release wax on it that also has to be removed. I suggest using solvent washes to do that. Next the hull will need to be sanded with 80 grit sand paper. Remove the sanding residue using the solvent wash again. The hull surface is now ready for an epoxy primer followed by bottom paint if desired. If you do not take the proper preparation steps you are wasting your time and money. Do it right the first time! 82 May 2017 Find Us On Facebook at Boating On The Hudson
