A LASTING HISTORY 65 years ago, in 1952, young Alain Bombard, a 27-year-old doctor-sailor, left Las Palmas in the Canary islands.

He thus sailed a quarter of the Earth s circumference, in the worst conditions, and landed safe and sound 2 months later in Barbados in the Caribbean islands.

He thus sailed a quarter of the Earth s circumference, in the worst conditions, and landed safe and sound 2 months later in Barbados in the Caribbean islands. He survived by eating fish and plankton and by drinking fish juice and rain water. Bombard proved that is it possible for shipwreck sailors to survivor at sea by utilizing the oceans riches. With his book, The Bombard Story, published in 1958, he acquired a worldwide reputation and later participated in different research works and in the development of liferafts. In France and abroad, his name remains linked to surviving at sea, and more broadly to the protection of the sea and its ecology.
