1 Dear Team Captain: First, thank you so much for organizing a team for the H20 Paddle Challenge! I know it can often be hard work being the team wrangler, so thank you for stepping up and helping us make this a successful event. In this packet you will find: A team roster waiver to be signed by each paddler and turned into the registration table on Saturday morning A zero waste event explanation A map showing where Dexter Park is and directions from Eugene For NOVICE TEAMS: A What to Expect packet, that will give you and your team mates an idea of what dragon boating is like, and basic safety tips for the day (your coach will go over this again during team orientation on Saturday morning) SOME NOTES There is a registration discount for teams staying at area hotels, let the registrar know if this applies to you You can order team EVENT shirts DEADLINE THIS FRI. Contact: Terri Wolle twolle@mcsewon.com There will be food vendors on site, but we encourage teams to bring their own snacks We have limited pop tents, so please bring a shade tent with you There will be a captains' meeting at 8:30 a.m. We are holding a team costume contest, so have fun with that (just not so much fun that you can't still wear a life vest. Our sponsor will be selecting the winner at the end of the day.

2 Please tell your paddlers to plan to arrive at Dexter Park by 8 a.m. This will give you all a chance to find your assigned team area, meet your coach for the day, haul in any picnic foods (encouraged) /equipment, turn in your roster, and warm up as a team before your first race. You will be racing 3 heats, the first race starts at 9 a.m. and we will move through the heats as fast as possible. Encourage your team to bring their own water bottles to refill, sunglass, sunscreen and to wear quick drying clothes. There will be onsite food vendors, a 50/50 and item raffle, and we will be accepting donations at our information tent. However, there will be no ATMs, but we accept paypal credit/debit card scanner payments. This is a relaxed, fun event for experienced teams to finish off their season and novices to learn about the sport. We hope you all enjoy yourselves and have a safe, fun day on the water! 3 Waiver Release and Covenant Not to Sue READ CAREFULLY BEFORE SIGNING This waiver must be signed before participation in any practice or race sponsored by Eugene Parks and Recreation, the City of Eugene, or the Emerald City Dragon Boat Club is allowed. Event or Activity: 2015 H2O Paddle Challenge Date of Activity: October 3, 2015 Agreement to Participate, Acknowledgment and Assumption of Risk, and Agreements of Release and Indemnity In consideration of being allowed to participate in this event, organized and conducted by City of Eugene Recreation Services, City of Eugene Community Centers, and/or Aquatic Centers, (hereby known as City of Eugene or COE ), I, or my minor child (hereby known as I ), acknowledge and agree as follows: The event in which I will be participating may include instruction and physical exertion. These activities can include exposure to the natural elements, which may include heat, cold, altitude, bodies of water such as river, lakes, and oceans, rocks, trees, storms, snow, sleet and rain; exposure to man-made elements and equipment, which may include, cables, platforms, buildings and other structures, ladders, skate parks, gyms, indoor climbing walls, and may also include the use of equipment and/or power tools necessary for the activity; transportation during the event; close personal contact, and dependence on other participants and staff; incidents may occur in remote places which may be many hours from medical facilities; and incidents may result from the actions of other participants and staff; or the failure or improper use of equipment. These risks and hazards are inherent in the activities of the event and the environment in which it is conducted, and they cannot be eliminated without significantly changing the nature of the activities. I understand that these hazards and risks may result in loss or damage to personal property, emotional distress, illness, personal injuries, and, in extreme cases, even death. I represent that I have no known medical or emotional condition which may adversely affect my participation in this event, or which may cause me to be a danger to myself or others. When provided by COE, I am choosing to list on the Health History Form any and all medical conditions or disabilities which I believe should be brought to the attention of COE. I understand that it is my responsibility, and mine only, to determine my suitability, medical or otherwise, for participation in the event. By signing this document below, I agree to the following: Acknowledgment and Assumption of All Risks I acknowledge and assume all risks of the event, its activities and the environment in which it is conducted, whether or not those risks are inherent, whether or not they are described above. Agreements of Release and Indemnity I agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless the COE, its officers, agents, and employees from and against any and all claims for injury or damage arising out of or in any way related to my enrollment, participation in the event, and transportation to and from the event. Other including Photo Release Unless otherwise agreed in writing, any mediation or suit may be conducted or filed only in Lane County, Oregon, and the laws of the State of Oregon will apply to any such dispute, excepting only the laws of the State of Oregon which may apply the laws of another jurisdiction. I authorize COE to provide or obtain medical care for me in the event of an incident requiring medical attention, and I further authorize COE to exchange with any third-party medical care giver such information regarding my medical history or condition as may be deemed important to either of them. I agree that I will not consume or be under the influence of any chemical substance, including alcohol, during the event. I understand further that the activity and all aspects of it are purely voluntary and I may choose not to participate. I agree that I will follow all safety instructions. I agree to allow COE to use photographic or other images of me for marketing or any other purpose deemed reasonable by COE. Should any part of this agreement be deemed not enforceable by a Court of competent authority, the remainder of the agreement shall nevertheless remain in full force and effect.

5 CAPTAINS PACKET DRAGON BOAT PADDLE CHALLENGE ZERO WASTE MEMO This event is on the path to Zero Waste, with the emphasis to divert as much material out of the landfill stream and into recycling or composting process. To accomplish this goal, the event is requesting participants to use compostable service ware which meet the product standards for Eugene s commercial composting program located at www Eugene-or.gov/lovefood, While some service ware may be recyclable in Eugene s commingled system, it must be clean and free of food debris. Unfortunately, event management and volunteers will be unable to accommodate recycled materials that are contaminated and they will be considered trash. The only material that this does not apply to is beverage containers. There will be 3 recycling/composting stations at the event that will have a Master Recycler volunteer available to answer any questions concerning recycling, composting and trash. If it is determined that leftover barbeque or picnic food and/or supplies is trash, please have teams pack out their own trash! The following items are common items that are definitely NOT recyclable or compostable: Coffee cups (from Starbucks, Dutch Bros. etc) Pizza boxes Plastic film Clear plastic clam shell containers To go fast food wrappers, cups, etc Please recommend that participants bring reusable water bottles lets not bring bottled water!!

6 Paddler Orientation What can I expect on event day? It s Physical and Wet!!! You don t need to memorize this packet and don t bring it with you to the event. The caller/coach will go over this the morning of the event. This is just a primer. What to bring to the Paddle Challenge Water bottle (it will be hot!) and food Hat / Sunscreen Suitable clothes to paddle in. o Wear clothes made for movement and will dry quickly. Most athletic wear is appropriate. o Water shoes are not necessary. Many paddlers practice in running shoes. o We do not recommend flip-flops or any shoe that can come off the foot easily as they pose a tripping hazard when moving around in the boat. o A change of clothing is advised if you plan to go anywhere after, because you will most likely get very wet. Hair clips or hair-tie for those with longer hair Goggles / Sunglasses (not expensive ones they may end up in the water) Personal items should be left in the tent; nothing should go on the boat with you REMEMBER: On a boat, if something isn t attached to you, you better not be attached to it. Things can and will fall overboard, and then it s gone for good. Dragon Boating is SAFE if you follow the rules Safety keeps it fun. Before your first race your coach for the day will go over basic Safety Rules. Mostly the caller/coach will be giving instructions, but the tiller is the ultimate authority. If at anytime these two people give conflicting directions, LISTEN TO YOUR TILLER.

7 Tell your captain, tiller or caller if you can't swim. Ensure that your captain and caller are aware if you have any injuries or special requirements Paddling requires physical exertion that pushes the aerobic level. It s a sprint. Participants are advised to be ready to experience the same kind of physical effort required to run a race for a couple of laps around a track. Always drink water between races, don t become dehydrated Safety vests are provided, however you are welcome to provide and wear your own. Listen to the caller and tiller at all times and follow instructions. This is a social sport, however excessive banter on the boat can restrict the ability of the caller and tiller to be heard, therefore please show respect by being ready to listen for instructions at all times, and by sitting where you are told. You will be seated beside a fellow paddler, ensure you know who they are, and their name, because in the event the boat tips or swamps you will need to account first for your bench mate. In the unlikely event of a water landing STAY WITH THE BOAT. It will act as your primary floatation device, so hold on and wait for instruction from your tiller. Dragon Boating is Team Work Vocabulary 1. Sit Ready! Paddlers sit at attention, both hands on paddles, ready for commands. 2. Paddles Up! From the Sit Ready position, Paddlers poise their paddles forward to dig those waves, ready for commands. 3. Take it Away! Paddlers begin to simultaneously paddle in one motion as one unit. Easier said than done 4. Let it Run! Paddlers cease paddling. 5. Back paddle! Look in front of you, watching your leads, and paddle backwards 6. Hold the Boat! Paddlers put the breaks on by putting the paddle straight up and down perpendicular to the boat. 7. Brace the Boat! Paddlers provide extra stability in a still boat, usually for other paddlers switching sides. Paddles are put flat on the water beside the boat, like a spatula. 8. Paddlers Prepare to Start! Paddlers extend to Race Start position, poised for explosive action 9. Port is the BOAT S left, (Port and left have the same number of letters) 10. Starboard is the BOAT S right. a. These are the same for paddlers, as you are always facing the bow (head of the boat). Mostly you will hear left and right, but it s nice to know the correct terms. Dragon Boating Means Paddling You don t row a Dragon Boat The caller/drummer and lead paddlers set the pace of the boat. Watch the inside hands of your lead paddlers to get the pace. Don t look at the water. It isn t going anywhere. Don t look at your paddle; it too isn t going anywhere. Keep you attention inside the boat. Hold the paddle so your inside hand is griping the

8 top and your outside hand is holding the paddle about an inch or two above the blade. REACH out over the gunwale (side) of the boat so your top and bottom hands are both out over the water, BUT DO NOT LEAN OUT OF THE BOAT. You should never have a death-grip on the paddle. Stay loose and relaxed, this sport is very Zen. Your stroke should happen in front of your body and you should be using your core muscles (legs, abs and gluteus) you shouldn t feel strain in your arms or back. Your paddle should move through the water parallel and very close to the boat. The full, extended stroke is about 4 feet or more depending on your height. Roughly add about 1-2 feet to the length of your paddle.
