1 Boat Trail Key Stage 1 Summary The workshop focuses on the idea of a journey by boat, and gives pupils the opportunity to discover the scientific principals of Pushes and Pulls as they consider how boats move through the water. It also gives a geography focus as they make observations with regard to people and places and introduces pupils to learning from objects from the past. In addition pupils can learn new vocabulary with regard to the parts of a boat. Workshop Contents Education Centre (Museum Tutor led) Pupils are introduced to the parts of a boat and think about how boats are powered using objects from our handling collection. Pupils think about how different boats are designed according to what their purpose might be, whether it is to carry cargo, passengers or a design for sport or leisure. Pupils make a model sailing boat using prepared materials. River Walk (Museum Tutor led) If you have previously booked a boat trip, it will replace this session. This allows pupils to observe different boats on the river, beginning at the Museum jetty and walking along the towpath to Hobbs Boatyard. Galleries (Teacher led) The Gallery trail encourages pupils to become detectives. Each group is given a picture pack of boats to find around the Museum. When they have found a boat, they can: Measure it Find out what the boat was designed to do Think about what material it is made of Think about how it moves through the water. Learning Outcomes Develop new scientific and geographical vocabulary and an understanding of boat terminology. Develop an understanding of how boats move. Using the Museum objects, consider why people make journeys. Carry out an enquiry by observation and recording.

They are to stimulate discussion and do not have to be strictly followed - the answers are included in red. Pupil Preparation We recommend that the pupils have the following preparation: Pupils have some knowledge of travel by river and sea Follow-up Ideas Make a bar chart of the types of boats that the children in your class have been on e.g. ferry, rowing, sail, motor. Boat Safety look at different soles of shoes and see which would grip the deck of a boat. Take some rubbings of them. Large print versions of all teachers and pupils material are available. 6 You need to move into the Thames Gallery This is a Saxon Log Boat. It is used for work leisure It carries cargo passengers.

7 Stay in the Thames Gallery and choose one of these boats. This is a a canoe. It is used for work leisure It carries cargo passengers.

8 Keep your eyes open in the Thames Gallery This is a Western Barge. It is used for work leisure sport It carries cargo passengers crew a paddle/sweep oars

9 You must leave the Thames Gallery and cross the Bridge Link to the Henley Gallery This is the steamship eva. It is used for work leisure It carries cargo passengers.
