AMERICAN YOUTH SOCCER ORGANIZATION AYSO Welcome to AYSO Region 116 serving the communities of Bonita, Chula Vista, Eastlake and Rolling Hills. We do not adhere to boundaries in our region and therefore our region continues to grow along with the community. This handbook has been developed to provide you with basic information relative to the soccer program that you have enrolled your child(ren) in. We feel we offer one of the finest youth sports programs in the area and hope that you will finish the season with the same feeling. If you are a newcomer to AYSO, you might be wondering what AYSO is all about. AYSO is a national organization focused on the local program or REGION. o REGION is usually a city or community that provides soccer programs for local children. o AREA is a number of regions in the same general geographic location grouped together and supported by staff headed by an Area Director. o SECTION is several adjacent Areas grouped together and supported by staff led by a Section Director. Your child is registered in Section 11, Area S, Region 116. AYSO is a nonprofit organization dedicated to positive child development through participation in a safe, fair, fun soccer environment. AYSO is an "all volunteer" organization. Each parent or guardian who has a player in the Region is strongly encouraged to volunteer his or her valuable time and service in some way. All board members, referees, coaches, assistant coaches, assistant referees, field personnel DONATE THEIR TIME IN SUPPORT OF YOUR CHILDREN! AYSO Vision: Is to provide world class youth soccer programs that enrich children s lives. AYSO Mission: Parent Handbook (May 2016) 7

To develop and deliver quality youth soccer programs which promote a fun, family environment based on the six philosophies: Your child is guaranteed to play at least 50% of each game, regardless of his or her level of skill or aptitude. Team balancing promotes the AYSO philosophy stressing team participation not winning. Every player should have an equal opportunity to be on a winning team, independent of skills. We try to set up teams at the beginning of the season to make them as balanced as possible. Our program is open to all children between 4 and 18 years of age who want to register and play soccer. There are no tryouts to "make the team", no reserved places, girls participate as well as boys, and beginners are just as welcome as skilled players. Interest and enthusiasm are the only criteria for playing. We say, winning kids comes first, winning games comes second. Kids thrive on encouragement. The extra effort it takes to offer positive help to our players, rather than negative criticism, is an investment in the future of all our kids - on or off the playing field. AYSO creates a positive environment based on mutual respect, rather than a "win at all cost" attitude. We believe that all players should be able to develop their soccer skills and knowledge to the best of their abilities, both individually and as members of a team, in order to maximize their enjoyment of the game. Parent Handbook (May 2016) 8

GENERAL INFORMATION 1. Registration: AYSO has developed eayso, a web based computer program, that allows parents to pre-register their child(ren) to ensure the accuracy of the player information. Log on to the region 116 website for more information on the registration process ( 2. Refund Policy: Refund requests made on or before July 15 th will receive a full refund. After July 15, a $40.00 administration fee will be deducted from the refund amount. All refund requests must be made in writing, complete the Refund form located on the website (under the forms tab), must include a copy of the parent s copy of the Player Registration form, and submitted to AYSO Bonita Region 116, P.O. Box 1277, Bonita, CA No refunds will be given after October 1 st. 3. Uniforms: The uniform consists of jersey, shorts, and socks and is provided for your child's use and included with the cost of registration. Uniforms do NOT need to be worn to practices. Children may not wear watches, chains, necklaces, earrings or other jewelry or hats to practices or games. 4. Shoes: We strongly suggest your child wear soccer shoes or tennis shoes. Soft-cleated soccer shoes may also be worn. Because children's feet grow so fast, we recommend inexpensive, but well fitting shoes. 5. Shin Guards: Shin guards must be size appropriate and are mandatory for children of all ages. They protect your children's vulnerable shins. Players shall not be allowed to participate in any game or practice unless they are wearing shin guards. 6. Ball: Your child needs to practice with an age-appropriate soccer ball to develop skill and coordination. For ages 4 to 7 (U5 U8) size 3 ball; ages 8 to 11 (U10 & U12) size 4; ages 12 to 18 (U14 U19) size 5. Your child should practice with the same size ball as they play with on game day. 7. Practice Location: ALL COACHES in AYSO are volunteers and the times and places of practices will be left to their discretion. However, coaches must use the AYSO 116 practice fields located throughout the community as permitted by the city, CVESD and SUHSD. Each player must arrange to arrive on time and to be picked up on time. Parent Handbook (May 2016) 9

8. Game Schedules: Games are to be played according to the schedule available on the website prior to the first game. The Regional Commissioner will give notice of game cancellations at least one hour prior to the starting time. 9. Insurance: The Soccer Accident Insurance (SAI) plan assists participants who suffer financial loss due to medical costs of injuries that occur while playing soccer by supplementing their regular major medical insurance policies. SAI pays for only those eligible expenses NOT covered by group or individual insurance, after the deductible has been met. If your child is covered by your group or individual insurance plan, YOU STILL NEED TO FILL OUT AN ACCIDENT REPORT FORM! Please refer to the webiste for complete details. 10. Sponsors: We take pride in our Region, its many volunteers and supporters and realize that without them, the kids in our community would not have the pleasure of playing such a terrific sport. Please get involved and support a TEAM, and pass the word to your friends and employer. Please contact the Sponsorship Coordinator if you are interested in contributing to the organization or sponsoring a team. 11. Parking Reminder: Vehicles parked in red zones and "NO Parking" areas will be ticketed and towed at the discretion of the Chula Vista Police. No parking zones will normally be marked in RED. Parking by AYSO parents is NOT allowed on interior school grounds. Please help keep our kids safe by keeping emergency access areas clear. 12. Parental Concerns: If you have any concerns regarding your child's coach, referees, or the game, please take the time to talk to the Coach directly. If you feel that you need an additional source, please talk to your Division Representative. Your Division Representative may refer you to the Regional Coach Administrator, Regional Referee Administrator or another Board member, depending on the nature of your concern. The names of these individuals and how to contact them can be found at the front of this Parent Handbook or on the website. Parent Handbook (May 2016) 10

GENERAL INFO & PROGRAMS AYSO Safe Haven Child and Volunteer Protection: The region is committed to the protection of all its children from abuse and neglect while participating in the program, and it promotes the awareness and prevention of child abuse in the community at large. The region requires all volunteers to complete, date and electronically sign the AYSO volunteer application form thus authorizing AYSO to perform and complete the applicant screening process. Volunteers will be screened at a degree appropriate to the level of risk. The region shall have the right to deny the participation of any individual who refuses to fill out the volunteer application form, lies or knowingly misrepresents information on the application form, or who violates the principles of these child protection policies. AYSO shall have the right to revoke both the registration and certification of any volunteer who falsifies information, is found guilty of child abuse, neglect or other crimes. Kids Zone: In AYSO, fans are asked to be cheerleaders, not critics. Kids Zone is a unique program that includes a parent pledge that moms and dads sign to commit to positive, encouraging behavior when they re watching the games. Parent Handbook (May 2016) 11

Soccer is a player s game. Players learn the game by trying new things, making mistakes and trying again. Sideline critics who scream instructions at players or criticize referees or coaches just slow down the learning process and make it less fun for everyone. Kids Zone is a dynamic program targeted to eliminate negative, even violent, sideline behavior of players, coaches and parents. It is aimed toward producing a thoroughly positive environment for everyone involved in youth soccer. All parents and volunteers must sign the Kids Zone pledge. Short Sided Games: AYSO has adopted "short sided" games in U5 - U12 Divisions for both boys and girls teams to promote player development. Division Maximum Number of Maximum Number of Goalkeepers Players on Field Players on Roster Permitted U5 Jamboree 3 Not Applicable No U6 3 5 No U7 & U8 5 8 No U Yes U Yes The advantages to short-sided games are: More touches = increased skill At any given time, more players are "part of the play" With fewer players, they can more easily grasp the fundamentals of movement and vision Smaller fields make learning the game easier Since young players learn more from the game than from the coach, coaches only need to be organizers of playing situations. Practices are much simpler to organize into games than drills Fewer players make it easier to keep the attention of young children Parent Handbook (May 2016) 12

VIP Program: Region 116 continues to offer a special division for players with physical and/or developmental disabilities. The VIP program carries the AYSO philosophy of "everyone plays" to a new height. Now, kids with special needs can have a good time playing soccer on their own level, while learning confidence and soccer skills. Please contact the VIP Coordinator for more information. Spring Season: Region 116 offers a Spring Soccer Season for boys and girls in U10 divisions and up. Do the limited number of volunteers and fields, this season is predominately for our Select/AllStar teams. If you are interested in learning more about this program, please contact the Spring Season Coordinator. Volunteer / Referee Participation: AYSO is a volunteer driven organization. Region 116 has adopted this program to increase participation of parent volunteers. Details of the program are explained in the Regional Guidelines, and it is the responsibility of every coach and parent to review and understand the program. Parent Handbook (May 2016) 13

Highlights of the program are: Each U10 U19 team must designate parent volunteers to be referees, field crew members and a select few other volunteer positions to earn points for their team during the season. Satisfying the Volunteer Points requirement will be easier for a team that designates new referees. Teams and/or coaches that fail to earn the required number of Volunteer Points will not be eligible to participate in post-season play. AYSO EXTRA Teams: Region 116 offers a special program for U9 - U16 players desiring a greater level of competition. Teams are formed based on open tryouts and compete against teams from other AYSO regions in Area 11-S. Competition is typical of All-Star play. Players may not transfer to EXTRA teams after the primary AYSO team formation ( July 15). Please contact the AYSO EXTRA Division Coordinator for more information. AYSO Matrix: Region 116 offers a special program for U11 U19 players desiring a greater level of competition. Teams are formed based on open tryouts and compete in the Presidio Soccer League and San Diego Developmental Academy (SDDA) with other countywide club teams. Competition is typical of Club play. Players may not transfer to Matrix teams after the primary AYSO and/or EXTRA team formation ( July 15). Please contact the Matrix Division Representative for more information. Parent Handbook (May 2016) 14

HOW TO BE A GOOD SPORTS PARENT Too often in sports, parents start projecting that their child could be a star. This implies that what the child is doing now is not good enough, and it adds additional and unnecessary pressure. Parental support is crucial. Learn about the rules by reading the FIFA "Laws of the Game". Above all, be tolerant of the children's mistakes and weaknesses. Cheering should be for the team, not just your own child. Losing a game can hurt, but it doesn't hurt as bad as parents may think. The highest standards of conduct and good sportsmanship must be maintained at all times by players, coaches, referees, spectators and all other participants. Offensive, insulting or abusive language is forbidden. The use of alcohol, tobacco products or illegal drugs in the vicinity of the playing field during practices or games is strictly forbidden. Spectators at games must remain behind the spectator control line (three yards from the sideline and between the penalty areas), and their voice efforts should be limited to positive compliments to the players. Under no circumstances should they attempt to coach or address remarks derogatory to players, coaches or the referee. Our children learn from the examples we set! Make yourself known to the coach. Thank him or her for their interest and time. Be supportive by having your child be on time for practice and games. Coaches volunteer their time to help your child and need your help and cooperation. Coaches are responsible for the parents' and spectators' behavior so referees are trained to go to the coach for help when sideline comments or conduct is not acceptable. Don't make the referees ask; please control any negative behavior from your sideline. Referees in AYSO are unpaid volunteers. The referee is entitled to the highest respect. His or her mistakes, and there will be mistakes, shall be accepted without complaint. Many of our referees are learning just as you are. They do make mistakes but try to learn and improve from those mistakes. Like players, referees are also practicing their skills. We only have about half of the referees we need and coach/parent/spectator harassment only drives existing referees out and convinces potential new referees not to volunteer. Parent Handbook (May 2016) 15

Lack of cooperation with the referees can lead to ejection of the coach, suspensions as well as termination of the game. After the game: DON'T immediately ask about winning. Winning should not be the most important topic and therefore should not be your first concern. DON'T launch into an instant detailed post-game analysis. Let your child tell you about the game. DO Allow for a cooling off period. DO Ask questions about your child s performance. DO Ask if they had fun. That s what counts! REFEREES If you are interested in volunteering as a referee, you will receive a comprehensive training class including a written manual as well as class and field demonstrations. The classes are offered in a relaxed and informal setting and questions are always welcomed. Upon completion of the class you will receive a full referee s uniform, flags, whistle and game cards. There is no cost involved to the volunteer. All adults and youths 10 years and older are welcomed to join the program. Many of our youths have successfully fulfilled their community services requirements through participation in our referee program. Our region has a proud history of training quality referees. Please join and help provide our youths with a safe and fun environment to play soccer. Contact the Regional Referee Administrator for referee clinic dates or more information. VOLUNTEERS Everyone can help! We need someone to mark all the fields each week; Someone needs to set up all the soccer goals and corner flags each Saturday morning and take them down each Saturday afternoon; Someone needs to referee all those games, each Saturday. Someone must obtain bids for trophies, Someone must obtain bids for pictures; Someone needs to schedule games; Someone must prepare newsletters; Someone must find sponsors; Someone must work at the new fields to get them ready for games; Someone must teach coaches; Someone must instruct referees; Someone must select uniforms and equipment; Someone must Parent Handbook (May 2016) 16

take accident reports and file claims for injured players; Someone must keep standings; Someone must coordinate referees and assistant referees. Someone needs to check volunteer references. These are just a few of the tasks that need to be accomplished during one season. Please talk with your family and find a way to help the kids and keep this great organization running. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What is included in the player registration fee? The registration fee includes the uniform, AYSO registration, SAI supplementary insurance, team and individual photos, and regular fall season games. When will my child s coach contact us? Depending upon the coach s availability, players will normally be contacted in late July or early August to have a team meeting and get the practice schedule. When will team practice begin? Practice may begin on or after August 1. Since fields are in short supply, Region 116 provides each coach with a listing of all permitted city and school district fields for practice. It is now the middle of August and a coach has not contacted me. Have we been forgotten? What should I do? Your coach may be on vacation, contact the Division Rep for your child s age group (please see the Board list on page 3 of this handbook). I would like my child to be on a particular coach s team again. Is this possible? Balanced Teams is one of AYSO s six philosophies. In divisions U10 U19, special requests upset team balancing and therefore are not considered. In divisions U6 and U8, teams are formed based on where the players live or attend school. I need practices to be on Monday and Wednesday from 4:30pm to 5:30pm? All of our coaches are volunteers and since they are giving their time and effort, they are the ones who chose practice days, times and locations. The only way to ensure a special day or time is to volunteer to coach your child s team. Parent Handbook (May 2016) 17

My child has decided not to play soccer? How do I receive a refund? Please see the Refund Policy on page 10 of this handbook. How long is the soccer season? Practice may begin on August 1. The first game is the first Saturday after Labor Day and the last game is the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Teams that advance to post season play (U10 U14, including All-Stars) may be playing until March. I would like to coach my child s team but I really don t know anything about soccer or coaching. Should I still volunteer? YES!! AYSO provides training for all new and returning coaches. We have an experienced coaching staff that is here to assist all coaches. Everyone was once a new volunteer, and without volunteers we cannot have a program that will be the best possible for our children. My child has never played before. Will he/she play as much as those who played last year? AYSO believes that everyone should play at least half of every game. In divisions U6 U8, no player may play the entire game until every player has played 3/4 of the game. Can I bring our family dog to practice or games? AYSO and the school districts do not allow pets of any kind (except service dogs) to be at the fields during practice or games. Is smoking permitted at practice or games? AYSO does NOT permit smoking or the use of any tobacco products at any soccer fields. We thank you for your cooperation. Where can I learn more about the region s rules and regulations? The Region 116 Regional Guidelines are posted on the region website ayso0116.org. The region s Annual Budget and other information, including this Parent Handbook, are also located on the website. Thank you for your support! Parent Handbook (May 2016) 18
