10 MIKE MEDRICK Cherokee Honorary Coach of the South Team Few coaches in New Jersey history have gotten more out of their teams than Mike Doc Medrick. He won 396 games at Cherokee during while leading the program from 1987 through After initially retiring, he returned to coach sister-school Lenape for several seasons beginning in He is one of only two coaches to have won five state championships at a public school, as his Chiefs captured Group 4 state titles in 1988, 1994, 1996, 2001 and The 96, 01 and 03 teams were also ranked No. 1 in the state by the Star-Ledger. His Cherokee teams also won nine sectional championships, 13 conference titles and captured the prestigious Hammonton Tournament six times. He taught science at Cherokee, and was also the school s first certified athletic trainer, a position he held from 1975 through 88. He also coached the Burlington County team in the Carpenter Cup, and also worked as an assistant coach at Rutgers-Camden. Along the way, he was also well liked for his personal nature, and his willingness to help coaches and players from his school and beyond. The Super 36 committee is proud to recognize Mike Doc Medrick as this year s honorary coach for the South team.

11 TOM WILSON Whippany Park Honorary Coach of the North Team If anyone ever assembled a list of the most successful high school coaches in New Jersey history, Tom Wilson would place high on the chart. A staff member at Whippany Park since 1980, he s coached nearly 100 seasons worth of softball, boys soccer and girls basketball. Over 80 percent of his teams have finished with winning records and he has won close to 1,400 overall games. His soccer teams have won two state championships and his girls hoops teams have played in three state finals. Tonight, he is being recognized for his extraordinary success in softball. He coached the Wildcats from 1985 through 2000, and his teams went , winning Group 1 state championships in 1989, 90, 92 and 99. Whippany Park also won the Morris County Tournament six times under his watch. The Wildcats were the state s top-ranked team by the Star-Ledger in 1989, 90 and 92. His softball teams were best known for winning 75 straight games from 1989 through 91, a state record that still stands. Whippany Park challenged the state s top teams from all groups during the streak, and when it ended with an upset loss in the 1991 state tournament, it embarked on another run of 32 straight wins lasting into the 1993 season. Wilson, who still coaches soccer and basketball, has always preached the value of his teams having fun, and the Super 36 committee is proud to recognize him as this year s honorary coach for the North.
