Ojai Youth Entertainers Studio Dated: 8/30/18 AUDITION GUIDE - PETER PAN JR Peter Pan Jr features a robust cast of beloved ensemble characters; Pirates, Lost Boys, and Neverland Natives are the mainstay of this timeless production. Peter Pan, Jr is adapted for the youth stage and provides a unique experience for each performer to explore and create memorable characters in an ensemble, developing invaluable skills to grow as an actor. ABOUT Peter Pan Jr -- Adapted from the 1954 Broadway production ( not the Disney version ), is based on J.M. Barrie's classic tale and features a memorable score by Morris "Moose" Charlap and Jule Styne with lyrics by Carolyn Leigh and Betty Comden and Adolph Green. SYNOPSIS Peter and his mischievous fairy sidekick, Tinkerbell, visit the nursery of the Darling children late one night and, with a sprinkle of pixie dust, begin a magical journey across the stars that none of them will ever forget. In the adventure of a lifetime, the travelers come face to face with a ticking crocodile, a fierce native tribe, a band of villainous pirates and, of course, the treacherous Captain Hook. DIRECTOR'S NOTES Indians -- Parts of this adaptation have been respectfully updated from the original 1954 production. The Indians in Neverland are referred to as the Neverland Natives. These characters are called Brave Girls in the script. Due to the authors original allusion to the Northeastern Native Americans, some of the Brave Girls musical numbers may be sung in the language of the Wyandotte tribe. The story will be told as scripted, with minor adjustments to support the roles of Tiger Lily and the Brave Girls as Neverland Natives. Tinker Bell -- The Neverland fairy appears in the show as a light on the stage. Tinker Bell's voice is expressed in the story by a Celeste. The directors may choose to assign this role to an actor as a non-speaking part for specified scenes in the show.

CAST OF CHARACTERS Peter Pan - Peter Pan is a boy without a care in the world. Originally written for and cast as a female, this role is for a girl or a boy with a soaring can-do spirit who most certainly won t grow up! Wendy - Wendy is the eldest of the Darling children and has a certain maternal quality. Wendy is very bright, ever-practical and ready for an adventure! warm presence and great singing voice. John - John is the middle Darling child and has an amicable and open presence. A little more proper than his younger brother. Strong acting and singing role who is the perfect complement to his siblings. Michael - Michael is the youngest Darling boy and seems to have unlimited energy. Strong acting role for someone who can easily portray the youngest and most stubborn of the Darling children. Nana - Nana is a dog, A role for a performer who is unafraid to jump in and play this iconic part of the story. This performer should have a knack for physicality and be comfortable making bold acting choices Mrs. Darling - Mrs. Darling is the mother of Wendy, John and Michael, and she is the perfect picture of a mother. A strong acting and singing role for someone who reads onstage as an older character Mr. Darling - Mr. Darling is the father of Wendy, John and Michael, and he is a man with one concern: keeping his house in order. Liza - Liza is the Darling s housekeeper who always seems to be in a bit of a frenzy as she tries to keep everyone pleased. This is a great cameo role for an actor who can make strong character choices. Tiger Lily - Tiger Lily is the fearless leader of the Neverland Native tribe, the Brave Girls. A role for a performer who can command the stage and is a good actor, singer and mover. Brave Girls - Neverland Natives. Strong and kind, they are an exuberant band of characters, proficient movers as well as competent singers. Brave Girl #1, Brave Girl #2, Small Brave Girl Lost Boys - The Lost Boys are a group of lads who live in Neverland without a care in the world! Strong acting, singing and moving roles of Nibs, Slightly, Curley, Tootles, Twin #1 and Twin # 2. Pirates - The Pirates are a gaggle of villains who are looking to cause some trouble. For male, female performers who can act, move well, and aren t afraid to sing! Featured roles: Noodles, Cecco, and Starke y. Captain Hook - Captain Hook, the leader of the Pirates, has a bone to pick or rather a Peter Pan to hook! A strong singing and acting role, but above all, with great comedic timing. Though Captain Hook is the villain of the show, he s also a bit of a comical character who just can t seem to get what he wants. He has to be as treacherous to the Lost Boys as he is a complete wimp around the Crocodile. Smee - Smee is Captain Hook s sidekick who wants nothing more than to see Captain Hook succeed in his evil plotting.strong acting role and should complement Captain Hook. Crocodile - Like Nana, the Crocodile is a silent role for a young performer who can take a leap and become the wickedest beast that ever was! Peter Pan s Shadow - a comical non-speaking role for an actor with ability to tell a story through pantomime Dialects : Estuary English, Irish, Scottish - give it a try! 3
About Casting Our goal is to provide participants the tools they need to participate in an ensemble, and have a fantastic time learning and growing in this group process. We aim to provide as much stage time as possible to every participant, and encourage our cast members to be part of an ensemble group no matter what role they are cast to play. We re here to enjoy the experience! The casting process takes into consideration various factors including presentations at audition, experience, training, passion, growth, commitment to rehearsals and practice, roles previously played, and last but definitely not least, the chemistry of the cast over all. The production team maintains the privilege of casting the show as they see fit, and intend to create a well-balanced cast. Please encourage your child to embrace their casting, and remember, there are no small parts! Remember, we are rooting for you! Do your best and have fun! 5 SIDES You know, Mother, sometimes I think it s a mistake to have a dog for a nurse. George, we must keep Nana. I will tell you why. My dear, when I came into this room tonight I saw a face at the window. A face at the window, two floors up? It was the face of a little boy; he was trying to get in. Impossible. But wait The boy was not quite alone. He was accompanied by I don t know how to describe it by a ball of light that darted about the room like a living thing! That is very unusual! George, what can all this mean? Tinker Bell! (celeste) Is your room straightened up? (celeste) TINKER BELL TINKER BELL (Dialect: British) Now, really, Tink! I will not go home! Peter Pan needs me. TINKER BELL (celeste) Why can t we talk this over like to civilized human beings?! 5
Now, children, make father comfortable. [the children begin to pretend with Peter and Wendy] Here s your chair, Father. Here are your slippers, Father! Here s your paper, Father. SLIGHTLY TWIN #1, TWIN #2 NIBS Now go wash up - it s your bedtime. [Lost Boys run off. A Serious expression comes over Peter's face] Peter, what is it? PETER I was just thinking -- it s only pretend, isn t it, that I m their Father? Oh, yes. But they are ours, Peter, yours and mine. But not really? Well, no, not if you don t wish it. I don t. PETER PETER PAN [John, Michael, and the Lost Boys re-enter with old blankets and pillows] PETER [Tinker Bell drinks the poison intended for Peter pan.] Tinker Bell, what s the matter with you? (celeste) It was poisoned! You drank it to save my life!! Tink! Dear, Tink. (celeste) Your light is growing faint, and if it goes out, that means you re dead. (celeste) You say (celeste) You could get well if (celeste)... if children believed in fairies. [Peter rises and throws out his arms, pleading] Do you believe? Oh please, please believe! If you believe, wherever you are, clap your hands and she ll hear you! 6
(Dialect: British) JOHN (or Michael) Peter, you can really fly? Could you teach us? Could you teach us to jump on the wind's back and away we ll go! Instead of sleeping in our silly beds we might be flying about saying funny things to the stars - ha-ha! How is it done? Think lovely thoughts? Like what? Fishing picnics sailing Christmas! (Dialect: British, Cockney, Irish, Scottish) SLIGHTLY Hello, I m Slightly. Yep, that s my true name. When we came to Neverland Peter had to make up names for you, but my mother pinned my name on my clothes I was lost in. Slightly Soiled -- that s me! (Dialect: British, Cockney, Irish, Scottish) CURLY Oh, but now I see a wonderfuller thing. [spying something off in the distance] High over the lagoon I see a great big white bird! It is flying this way! It looks weary as it flies. Oh I can hear it moaning, Poor wendee, poor wendee. I think there are birds called Wendees. See, here it comes! Look! Hey, there s Tinkerbell. What s she sayin now. She says Peter wants us to shoot down the Wendee. Well, let s do what Peter wishes. Out of my way, Tink. I ll shoot it down. [draws bow and arrow] I ve got it! Peter will be so pleased! (Dialect: British) CAPTAIN HOOK Ay, that is the fear that haunts me. Ooooh! Not of crocodiles, but of that one crocodile. He liked me hand so much that he has followed me ever since from land to land, from sea to sea, he follows the ship, licking his lips for the rest of me. Well, I want no such compliments! Smee, that crocodile would have got me long ere this if he could have crept upon me unawares. But by some lucky chance he swallowed a clock And it goes on tick, tock, tick within him; and so, before he can reach me I hear the tick. (pause) Ay, that is the fear that haunts me. TIGER LILY [captured by the pirates] I ll not tell you a thing! I uphold the honor of my tribe. I do not fear death. Peter Pan and the Lost Boys -- they will rescue me. Peter is the sun, and the moon, and the stars! You are no match for him. Hu-waheh ( come here ) Come Here: húʔwahęh Sa-te dee-oh-ru-jah ( go play ) Go Play: sateʔⁿdiyó:ružah 7
