March is the best month to play basketball. 4. In the United Kingdom, March is National Sleep Month, which is run by The Sleep Council. 5. In the United States, March 1st is National Pig Day, Share a Smile Day, and Peanut Butter Lover's Day. 6. In honor of St. Patrick s Day in 1961, 100 pounds of green dye was poured into the Chicago River. 7. George Washington, on Evacuation Day, ordered for St. Patrick to be the response to the password, Boston. 8. St. Patrick wasn t even Irish! 9. 4 By: Amrit K and Alexandra Bartoszek Eraser-Stamped St. Patrick s Day Shirt: Material: clover pattern a shirt Freezer Paper (can be found at the grocery store) fabric paint pencil with an unused eraser Directions: Trace the clover shape on the NON-shiny side of a piece of freezer paper. Cut out the clover shape. If you are doing a more intricate design, you could use an X-Acto knife, but scissors work fine here. Put the clover with its shiny side down onto the shirt. Iron it on. Dip the eraser in green paint and start stamping around the clover. Make sure to put another piece of freezer paper inside the shirt to keep the paint from leaking through. Put the dots closer together around the clover and then gradually faded them out. Let the paint dry and peel off the freezer paper. Follow the instructions on your paint to heat-set it (usually involves ironing or throwing it in the dryer) 4

5 The Leprechaun s Pot Of Gold Material: One terra cotta pot Paint Hershey s Nuggets (preferably the ones in golden wrappers) Directions: Take your pot and paint strips of different colors onto the pot. Wait for the paint to dry. (You should let it dry completely.) Once it is dry, take your chocolates and put them inside. Enjoy! 5

6 Leprechaun Hat Memory Game Materials: Green Hershey s Kisses Glue Construction Paper Directions: To make the game pieces, simply cut circles out of different colored construction paper (two circles per color) and glue them on the back of the Hershey s kisses. Let them dry. How to Play: Put all the chocolates down so that the colored side isn t visible. Players will take turns turning over two Hershey s. If the colors match, take them and eat them! If not, flip them over again. (Save the wrappers!) Do this until there are no more leprechaun hats left. Whoever has the most wrappers/ate the most chocolates at the end of the game wins! 6

7 The History Of Daylight Saving Time Written By: Rosa C. There are a lot of events happening this March: Ash Wednesday, Saint Patrick's, Day, and the commencement of spring to just name a few. However, Daylight Saving Time may just be the biggest event in this upcoming month. Many may just see it as having to wake up an hour earlier and fixing that old clock on the wall, but some will see it as something different. Daylight-saving time dates all the way back to May 1, 1961, in Germany when people hoped that it would save energy during World War I. Other researchers believe that it dates all the way back to the ancient civilizations, but they don t have exact dates for that. People who saw a purpose in daylight-saving time were from every century, but there are some more recent individuals shown here. A purpose of it was seen by author William Willett, who saw that there would also be a greater time in the day to enjoy natural sunlight and less use of artificial lighting. He proposed the advancement of clocks by eighty minutes in four steps. Later, on March 19, 1918, the law for daylight-saving time went into effect in the US for reasons to save fuel. This happened about a year after the country entered war. Benjamin Franklin also saw that Daylight Saving Time would positively affect people back then by saving them money on candles. This was said in his essay published in 1784 in France. In 1895, George Hudson thought that a shift in two hours for daylight-saving time would be a good idea. Germany shut down the daylight-saving idea after the war but kept bringing it back during tough times for money saving purposes. Starting in 2005, the US has been using daylight-saving time for eight months each year. That might soon change, though, because of studies researchers have conducted 7

8 to see the effects of daylight-saving time on people. Studies showed that since 2006, there was a 1% increase in energy consumption, a year after the daylight-saving time policy had taken place in Indiana. Studies also show that daylight-saving time can be linked to disorders in sleep patterns that can potentially lead to a heart attack! With all the negativity against daylight-saving time, many wonder how much more of it we can take and how much time it has left. This article was inspired by: time.com 8

9 Why A Robin Has a Red Tummy It was the beginning of winter. Snow fluttered softly onto the ground. Cardinal flew to the ground, collecting twigs and seeds. A small blue jay was trying to pick up a large nut to bring to its family. Cardinal chuckled and swiped the nut, and he flew off again. He came across a squirrel and stole some sticks from its nest. All of the creatures in the forest disliked Cardinal. Cardinal landed in his nest. He had piles of things that he stole from other animals in the forest. It was filled with nuts, berries, sticks, and many other items. Cardinal enjoyed living in his big nest surrounded by riches. Suddenly, a growl filled the air. Cardinal hopped over to a branch to see what was happening. Lynx was sitting at the bottom of Cardinal s tree. Lynx s tail swished back and forth. Cardinal! Give me back my food! Lynx shouted. Cardinal laughed. No way, Lynx! Finders keepers! he shouted and turned back to his nest. Lynx growled and left. Lynx called a meeting of the leaders of the forest. He met Bluejay, Weasel, Bear, and Fox in the forest meeting center. It was a clearing in the forest with a stone table and chairs. Leaders of the forest, I have news. Cardinal s trickery has become unbearable. It needs to stop before everybody goes hungry because of him, Lynx said. Bear growled. Yes, we must stop him, he said. But how? Weasel asked. We can trick him, Fox said. 9

10 No, Cardinal knows too many tricks; it would be too risky, Bluejay argued. Do you have a better idea? Lynx asked. Bluejay thought for a moment. Perhaps we can try to trick him, he suggested. Fox rolled his eyes. We could attempt to ambush him. Then, he might run away and leave us alone. Cardinal is easy to frighten, Fox said. Everyone nodded. Wait, how will we ambush him? Weasel asked. Lynx thought for a second. Maybe we could call all of the animals in the forest to help us without Cardinal knowing, he said. Everyone agreed to do it. Bluejay told all of the birds, Bear told all of the big animals, Weasel told everyone who lived in the burrows, and Lynx told everybody else. When everyone was ready, Lynx lead them to Cardinal s tree. Cardinal had been feasting on berries and fell asleep. The birds fluttered up to his nest. Everyone else surrounded his tree. Bluejay suddenly chirped loudly, waking Cardinal. Cardinal screamed. Everyone yelled at him, and he flew away. He kept flying until he got to a river. Cardinal rolled in the mud, making himself brown, except for his tummy that stayed red. Cardinal thought nobody would notice him, but the animals recognized him and chased him. Cardinal had no choice but to fly away and only return during the summer time, when the animals could not find him. Cardinal never stole again, but everyone remembered him. At one point, a bunny started referring to him as Robbing, but other animals changed it to Robin for short. And that is why a Robin has a red tummy. By: Emilia Cabaero 10

11 PARCC Life Hacks By: Sinal Patel and Vanja Zaninovic 1. Review vocabulary words that you are not familiar with. PARCC testing has strategic vocab words that are, most of the time, a grade level higher. It s better for you to know what you are reading than guessing what the words mean to you. 2. Go over notes you took in class for math and English as well. When you're taking PARCC, a majority of the questions are based off of what you learned throughout the year. 11

12 3. Go online and look for PARCC practice tests. If you go to the PARCC website, they have sample tests for both math and English that you can take based on your grade level. It also gives you the answers at the end of the test. This will give you broad view of what your test will look like and what will be on it as well. 4. To make studying easier, make flashcards or even make tests on Quizlet to store information. You don t have to use Quizlet for just PARCC; use it on any other quiz or test you have take as well. 12

13 5. Always ask your teacher for help, too. Ask them what they think will be on the PARCC test and what you should focus on more. It s safer to ask what the test will be about rather than not knowing at all. 13
