1 Creative Problem Solvers Participate In OM Competition Odyssey of the Mind teams from Lincoln, Perkins and Kelley Schools participated in the regional K-12 competition with about 20 other school districts at the Spencerport School District March 9.

2 Each team did an amazing job presenting their solution to the chosen problems, said District Enrichment and Arts-In-Education Robyn Ross-Squirell, who is also the OM coordinator here. It is amazing to see how imaginative and creative our students are, she continued. They came up with the ideas for their solutions, scripts, and props on their own. They wrote the scripts as well as created their props, and even did some sewing.

3 It takes trust, commitment, and teamwork to do something like this. Every team put forth 110%. They should be proud of what they accomplished. I know I am, their coaches are and the district is proud!" Ross-Squirrell said. Odyssey of the Mind is a program that encourages students to tap into their own creativity, she continued. Through the exercise of developing imaginative paths to problem solving, they learn skills that will provide them with the ability to solve problems, great and small, for a lifetime. Students are able to express their ideas and suggestions without fear of criticism and that the creative problemsolving process rewards thinking "outside of the box". OM teams are typically five to seven students with an adult coach. Each team chooses a problem and they typically spend over 100 hours between November through February, meeting and working on the solutions that they present at competition. Odyssey of the Mind was brought to the Newark Central School District during the school year where the District had a team at Perkins and a team at Kelley. In the school year, the District had two teams at Kelley and a team at the Middle School. In the school year, the District had a team at Lincoln, two teams at Kelley and two teams at the Middle School. This year the district had nine teams with two made up of students from Perkins and Lincoln schools and seven at Kelley School.

4 The Perkins/Lincoln school team members were: 1 st -2 nd grade team: Anna Verdine, Kathyrn Verdine, Connor Visingard, Ashley Tack, Morgan Springer, Ethan Coleman and Grayson Cole. They were coached by Pat Verdine and Lori Attridge. K-2 nd grade team: Kensington Wilck, Mason Jorgensen, Courtney Jadus, Taylor Oliver, Marek Pierce and Grace DeVelder. They were coached by Bill Wilck. Kelley School teams were: Everett Cole, Brevin Horton, Tyler Horton, Trent Horton, Alyssa Hosmer and Brynn Blakesley. They were coached by Paul Cole with assistance from Troy Horton and Jean Fortin. Madison Jorgensen, Christian Baker, Rosemary Wetmore, Emma Kuhn, Jamarya Walker and Jayce Smith. They were coached by Kelly Jorgensen, Loreen Jorgensen and Sonya Mateo. Pierce Burm, Caroline McGavisk, Emilena Wilck, Amber Johnson, Chariah Cunningham and Jaiden Gaskin-Vilson.They were coached by Debra Burm with assistance from Sonya Johnson.

They were coached by Shanna Mott and Christine Natale. 3 rd and 4 th grade team: Garett Lagenor, Ben Perrone, Ethan Perrone, Olen Knight and Jalen Bel. They were coached by Jennifer Graham and Sonja Wagner. 5 th grade team: Kayla Williams, Lauren MacTaggart, McKenzie DeWolf, Abbey Zubb, Kieanna Kemp, Tiana White and Cherylanne Garrett. They were coached by Kevin Williams. 5 th grade team: Logan Dayton, McKinley Miller, Olivia Smith, Tyler Jadus, Bobby Kemp and Blade Case. They were coached by Sharon Dayton and Tracey Larson.
