THE CARE BEARS "Bumbleberry Jammed" Episode #114b FADE IN: EXT. RAINSHINE MEADOWS - DAY PAN across the meadows, which are alive with activity. All the bumbleberry bushes are in full bloom CARE BEARS with baskets over their arms, pick berries from various bushes. (TRUE HEART, CHEER, and GRUMPY are among the Care Bears.) TRUE HEART and CHEER are at one bush, helping themselves. 1 TRUE HEART Isn't picking bumbleberries fun? 2 CHEER It sure is! But there never seems to be enough bumbleberries to go around! 3 TRUE HEART <giggle> That s what makes them so special! Cheer's starts off down the path when she is surprised to run into GRUMPY. 4 CHEER Grumpy? I didn t know you liked bumbleberries? 5 GRUMPY Like em? <chuckle> I LOVE EM! Especially when I make my fan- fumble-tastic bumbleberry jam! 6 CHEER <laugh> Grumpy you seem very un- grumpy! I like that! Grumpy s look turns to one of grumpy-concern, seeing all the other Care Bears picking berries. 7 GRUMPY I just hope there s enough for me! (off Cheer s disapproving look) I mean, er... everyone. So that we all have some. Cheer gives him a reassuring smile.
2. 8 CHEER I m sure there ll be plenty! And she goes merrily on her way, Grumpy gets a determined look on his face. He searches for a bumbleberry bush--- --but all the bushes are crowded with Bears and he can't find a spot to pick. He sees something O.S. and brightens. There is a bumbleberry bush with no one by it. Grumpy starts for it when two other CARE BEARS rush in front of him. Grumpy frowns, and makes a move for the next free bush, but again- MORE CARE BEARS rush in front of him. Grumpy looks really frustrated now. 9 GRUMPY <frustrated snort!> He sees a single free bush. Grumpy smiles and starts for the bush, but hesitates, looking around for other Care Bears. Seeing that the coast is clear, he relaxes and reaches out to pick some berries but... He does a surprise TAKE, finding CARE BEARS already there! 10 GRUMPY (CONT.) Aw, blunder-berries! I gotta find my own bumbleberry bush! Grumpy stomps off in a huff. WIPE TO: EXT. RAINSHINE MEADOWS - LATER Grumpy finds himself in a secluded section of the meadows. He looks up, realizing he doesn't recognize the area. 11 GRUMPY I've never been in this part of the meadow before. He sniffs the air, and reacts happily. 12 GRUMPY (CONT.) <sniff-sniff> Mmmm, smells like bumbleberries! He looks around, then up where he notices...
3....a single sunbeam shining down, hitting behind a vary large shrub-plant. Curious, he goes over to the large shrub and parts the branches, REVEALING: The light shining on a bumbleberry bush twice as big as any of the others. It has remained hidden behind the big shrub. 13 GRUMPY (CONT.) <gasp!> It's the biggest bumbleberry bush I've ever seen! He picks a couple very large berries and looks at them. 14 GRUMPY (CONT.) And the biggest berries! This must be the oldest bumbleberry bush in all of Care-a-Lot! He pops the berries in his mouth and is immediately in heaven. 15 GRUMPY (CONT.) These bumbleberries are the best I've ever tasted! He fills his basket full of berries and rushes off. WIPE TO: INT. GRUMPY'S HOUSE - LATER Grumpy dumps some of the berries into a kettle full of boiling water. On a counter nearby, he has ONE JAR cooling filled with jam that he s made. 16 GRUMPY This batch of bumbleberry jam is going to be out of this world! He spreads some on a piece of bread and takes a bite. The jam is heavenly. His feet flap like wings and he is literally lifted off the ground in ecstasy. 17 GRUMPY (CONT.) <Mmmmmmmmmmmm!> He floats gently back to the floor, but is brought back to reality as there is a KNOCK at the door. Grumpy opens the door just enough to peek out. On the other side of the door stands Cheer, sniffing the air with delight.
4. 18 GRUMPY (CONT.) Cheer? What do you want? 19 CHEER What is that wonderful, sweet smell? It's gotta be bumbleberry jam... only better! Grumpy thinks on this, not certain how to answer. 20 GRUMPY Oh... it s ummmmm.. He turns and looks back inside his house INSERT showing his jar of jam. He turns back to Cheer, and bits his lower lip then-- 21 GRUMPY (CONT.) My socks! I m um-- washing my socks. Well, gotta go rinse! He slams the door closed. Cheer shrugs, then realizes. 22 CHEER Oh. (beat) But Care Bears don t wear socks. He s up to something. INT. GRUMPY S HOUSE - KITCHEN - DAY Grumpy stands with his back to the door, rationalizing. 23 GRUMPY (to himself) I can t tell anyone about the special bush, if I do, it ll get picked clean and there won t be any berries left! Cheer POUNDS on the door from outside. 24 CHEER (O.S.) (shouting) Grumpy! I know you've got bumbleberry jam in there! Grumpy suddenly gets worried that someone will hear her. He opens the door and pulls Cheer inside, then slams the door.
5. 25 GRUMPY Keep it down! All right, I ve got some bumbleberry jam. But it s, um- nothing special. Just ordinary jam. 26 CHEER But it smells soooo good! Can I please have a taste? Grumpy acts defiant, not wanting to share. 27 GRUMPY A taste?! Why certainly not! Cheer gives him the big eyes, looking as adorable as possible. Grumpy slumps over, defeated. 28 GRUMPY (CONT.) <sigh> Oh, you gave me the big eyes... Oh,all right, ONE taste. She smiles happily. Then Grumpy dips a CLEAN NEW spoon into the jam and gives her a little taste. Cheer reacts to it, nearly swooning as her feet flap and she s lifted off the ground in delight! 29 CHEER <Mmmmmmmmmmmm!> As she floats back down: 30 CHEER (CONT.) That s better than any bumbleberry jam I ve ever tasted! Why is yours so much better? Grumpy looks worried, not wanting to tell her. 31 GRUMPY Um... I used special cinnamon flowers for spice... ones that grow up on Cloud Hill. Yeah... that's it! 32 CHEER (skeptical) There aren't any cinnamon flowers up on cloud Hill. Grumpy takes the spoon from Cheer and leads her back toward the door.
6. 33 GRUMPY They're on the- uh, far-far side! With that, he rushes Cheer out the door, bolting and locking it several times for good measure. He breathes a sigh of relief and takes another bite of his bread, again lifting off the ground. EXT. GRUMPY'S HOUSE - CONTINUOUS Cheer stands there, confused. As she heads off: 34 CHEER I ve never heard of cinnamon flowers. But if I could make jam like Grumpy s... I m going to check it out! CUT TO: WIPE TO: EXT. CLOUD HILL - DAY Cheer arrives on the hill. She looks around, but there's no flowers, just an empty hill in the clouds. 35 CHEER I don t see any flowers at all... She goes around to the other side. Nothing, just more cloud 36 Nothing! CHEER (CONT.) She looks frustrated. 37 CHEER (CONT.) Grumpy must have made a mistake. She rubs her belly badge creating a rainbow slide. She hops on it and slides back down toward Grumpy's house. WIPE TO: EXT. GRUMPY'S HOUSE - LATER Cheer is at the door, KNOCKING. Again, Grumpy opens it just enough to peek out. 38 GRUMPY (PARTIAL O.S.) What do you want?
7. 39 CHEER Grumpy, there aren't any cinnamon flowers up on Cloud Hill. 40 GRUMPY Did I say cinnamon flowers? I meant, um-- orange thistle that I found in-- Friendship Park. Cheer is suspicious now, putting her hands on her hips. 41 CHEER Grumpy, there isn't any orange thistle in Friendship Park, you know that! I m starting to think that you re not telling me the truth. Grumpy panics, looking back into his house. 42 GRUMPY <gulp!> Uh, oh! Uh-- My jam is bubbling over! Gotta go! He SLAMS the door. Cheer doesn't understand. 43 CHEER <frustrated sigh> She huffs and goes off on her way as we... FADE IN: ACT BREAK FADE OUT: EXT. RAINSHINE MEADOWS - LATER Cheer is happily picking berries at the edge of the meadow. She looks up and is surprised to see Grumpy appear from behind one bush, tiptoe across the open meadow and disappear behind another bush. She tries to call to him. 44 CHEER (calling) Grumpy! Grumpy doesn't answer. He just tiptoes from the bush he's now behind to another bush. Cheer thinks for a BEAT.
8. 45 CHEER (CONT.) (to herself) Hmm... maybe if I follow him, I'll learn his secret for making such good bumbleberry jam! She tiptoes off in his direction. Grumpy is standing outside of the big shrub, behind which the sunbeam is illuminating. He looks both ways cautiously, then disappears into the big shrub. Cheer tiptoes over and parts the leaves of the shrub and peers in. There is Grumpy, giddily harvesting berries from the old bumbleberry bush. 46 Ah ha! CHEER (O.S.) (CONT.) Startled, Grumpy leaps in the air doing a wild TAKE. As Cheer ENTERS. 47 GRUMPY <big startled reaction!> 48 GRUMPY (CONT.) (breathing hard) Whoa! You gave me a Care Bear scare! 49 CHEER So this is your secret! Grumpy tries to cover. 50 GRUMPY No, these are just ordinary bumbleberries! Unconvinced, Cheer picks on and tastes it. 51 CHEER <Mmmmmmmmmmmmm!> She lifts off the ground with sheer delight. As she comes back down: 52 CHEER (CONT.) Tell me the truth- there never was any cinnamon flowers or orange thistle... it s these berries!
9. Grumpy reluctantly confesses. 53 GRUMPY (grumpily) All right. You got me. That's why my bumbleberry jam is so good. Cheer gives Grumpy a hurt, but stern look. 54 CHEER Why did you lie to me, Grumpy? You know that s wrong. Grumpy hangs his head, embarrassed. 55 GRUMPY <grumble> Yeah, I know... lying is wrong, but... if everyone finds out about this bush, then there won t be any berries left! Cheer starts filling her basket with the delectable delights. 56 CHEER But shouldn't we share them? Just like in his house, Grumpy starts pushing Cheer back toward the exit in the big shrub. 57 GRUMPY Oh, we will! Just as soon as we ve picked enough berries for the two of us. 58 CHEER I don t know... I can t lie! 59 GRUMPY It won t be lying. It ll be... a secret! And we ll tell everyone as soon as we ve picked our berries. Cheer s still not sure, but thinks this over. 60 CHEER Hmmmm, a secret, huh? 61 GRUMPY Yep. Our secret. Cheer is uncomfortable, but hesitantly agrees.
CHEER Mmmmm-- oh, all right. She exits through the shrub. CUT TO: EXT. RAINSHINE MEADOWS - DAY - CONTINUOUS Cheer walks away from the shrub, back towards Care-a-Lot, looking not so cheery. She doesn't feel good about the arrangement she made with Grumpy. Suddenly, True Heart comes up behind Cheer. 63 TRUE HEART Hi, Cheer! Startled, Cheer whirls around to face True Heart and at the same time hides her basket behind her back. 64 TRUE HEART (CONT.) What were you doing behind that big shrub? Cheer s not certain what to say CHEER Oh, I was... just taking a shortcut back to Square Care - I mean, Care Square. True Heart's built-in lie detector begins to work. She squints one eye skeptically. 66 TRUE HEART Really? And what's that behind your back? Cheer starts shaking as she digs a deeper and deeper hole for herself. 67 CHEER Nothing. She puts on a forced smile. True Heart continues to glare at her, tapping her foot, impatiently. 68 CHEER (CONT.) Uh... nothing you'd be interested in... and by interested, I mean nothing you'd want to eat... Finally, the stress is too much for her and she thrusts the basket out towards True Heart.
CHEER (CONT.) (blurts) Ohhh... I can't lie! These are the best bumbleberries ever! From the oldest bush in Care-a-Lot! And it's hidden behind that shrub! True Heart takes the basket and smiles sweetly. 70 TRUE HEART See? Doesn't telling the truth make you feel better? Cheer breathes a sigh of relief, then gets a worried look on her face. 71 CHEER It sure does! (then concerned) But now I ve gotta go talk to Grumpy. 72 TRUE HEART That s the spirit! Go tell Grumpy about this bumbleberry bush too! 73 CHEER Um... yeah. I will. Cheer runs off for Grumpy s house. 74 CHEER (CONT.) Enjoy the berries! WIPE TO: INT. GRUMPY'S HOUSE - SOON Grumpy now has THREE JARS of jam made. Cheer comes rushing in, out of breath. 75 GRUMPY Cheer, are you okay? 76 CHEER Yes... um, no. Ummmm, Grumpy? I told True Heart about the secret bumbleberry bush! Grumpy begins to worry, knowing what that might mean. 77 GRUMPY Wha-wha-what?! You told her?! 78 CHEER I couldn't lie!
12. Cheer recoils as Grumpy begins to boil, his face turning red. Then he holds up his hand and pauses as he counts. 79 GRUMPY <Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm!> (pause) Onebumbleberry-- two-bumbleberry-- three-bumbleberry. <sigh> He looks more calm. Cheer gives him a questioning look. 80 GRUMPY (CONT.) I find if I take a moment and count to myself that helps me control my grumpies. 81 CHEER Whew, I m glad. 82 GRUMPY <sigh> Don t worry about True Heart. I ll take care of everything. He graciously escorts her out. Cheer looks very confused. 83 CHEER Oh, uh, okay. As soon as she s gone. Grumpy thinks to himself. 84 GRUMPY Hmph! True Heart s going to tell everyone about the bumbleberry bush. (getting an idea) I know just how to keep them from finding it! DISSOLVE TO: EXT. RAINSHINE MEADOWS - MORNING A confused True Heart looks around the shrub that hides the bumbleberry bush. Cheer stands nearby. 85 TRUE HEART I ve looked all over, and I can t find that bumbleberry bush you told me about. She holds up her empty basket. 86 TRUE HEART (CONT.) And I m out of berries. Cheer points to the shrub.
CHEER It s hidden, right behind this shrub. She parts the bushes and gasps. The bumbleberry bush is gone! 88 CHEER (CONT.) <gasp!> It's gone! True Heart examines the hole and a few tangled roots. 89 TRUE HEART It looks like someone dug it up. Cheer folds her arm and frowns. 90 CHEER And I have a pretty good idea who it was. WIPE TO: EXT. GRUMPY'S HOUSE - MOMENTS LATER Cheer and True Heart are outside of Grumpy's house, KNOCKING on the door. The door opens a crack and Grumpy peeks out. 91 GRUMPY What? I'm busy! 92 CHEER Grumpy, did you take the old bumbleberry bush? Grumpy s eyes grow wide with panic. 93 GRUMPY Uh, why would you think that? 94 CHEER Because I can see it inside your house! And indeed, we can see a glimpse of the bush in a big flower pot through the open crack in the door. 95 GRUMPY What?! Oh-- Grumpy sees that it s no use. He can t lie any more.
GRUMPY (CONT.) <sigh> Yes, I took the bumbleberry bush. Grumpy hangs his head in shame, letting the door open all the way. The girls enter. 97 GRUMPY (CONT.) I wanted to get enough berries for myself, then I was going to share. INT. GRUMPY'S HOUSE - CONTINUOUS They walk in, looking over the plant. 98 GRUMPY I guess I got carried away. CUT TO: 99 CHEER And so did the bumbleberry bush, by you! 100TRUE HEART Grumpy, you ve been telling lies. And that s wrong. Grumpy flops down into a chair. 101 GRUMPY I know. It was wrong when I lied. It made my stomach feel jittery. And it was wrong when I was being selfish, that made me feel ashamed. Grumpy stands and holds up his hand in a pledge. 102 GRUMPY (CONT.) But I promise! No more lying! He gestures to the o.s. bumbleberry bush. 103 GRUMPY (CONT.) And no more being selfish with the bumbleberries. REVEAL that the bush doesn t look well, it slumps over and most of its leaves fall off.
TRUE HEART Oh, no! Uprooting the bush is killing it! Grumpy is truly heartsick. 105 GRUMPY I never should have done it! (getting an idea) Quick, lets put some berries back on it! In a fit of panic the three of them quickly try to put berries back on the bush... but the berries just fall to the floor. Finally True Heart realizes TRUE HEART Wait a minute... you can t put berries back onto something! 107 GRUMPY Oh. Well, it was worth a try. But Cheer remains optimistic. 108 CHEER What we need is a green thumb! WIPE TO: EXT. GRUMPY'S HOUSE - LATER Grumpy has moved the bush (still in its pot) outside, where SHARE is examining it. (True Heart & Cheer are there too.) 109 SHARE Hmmmmm. Moving the bumbleberry bush has made it sick. But I think it ll be okay. Grumpy is so happy, that he hugs Share. 110 GRUMPY Really?! Oh thank you, Share! 111 SHARE But it s going to need extraspecial care to nurse it back to health. Grumpy reaches off screen and pulls in a ROCKING CHAIR, placing it next to the bush, he plops down in it. Then produces an ALARM CLOCK that he winds.
GRUMPY I ll do whatever it takes. I ll stay up all night! I ll care for it around the clock if I have to! 113 SHARE No one expects you to do it all by yourself, Grumpy. One at a time, True Heart, then Cheer, raise their hands. 114 TRUE HEART I'll help! 115 CHEER Me, too! Grumpy smiles, realizing everything s going to be okay. 116 GRUMPY Thanks guys. He gives the clock one wind too many. The face SPRINGS off. 117 SHARE It s going to be a long time before any bumbleberries can be picked from it. Share and True Heart look disappointed. 118SHARE & TRUE HEART <disappointed oh > 119 SHARE No more yummy jam. Grumpy looks sad too. Then he brightens and stands. 120 GRUMPY Well, that s not quite true. Grumpy opens his door, revealing his THREE JARS of Jam. 121 GRUMPY (CONT.) It s all I ve got, but it s enough to share. And that s the truth! Grumpy starts handing out jars of jam to his friends as we... THE END FADE OUT:
