THE CARE BEARS Bad News episode 123b FADE IN: EXT. CARE BEAR SQUARE - DAY It s a beautiful day in Care-A-Lot. and sit by the fountain, enjoying the day. Or are they? Share looks bored and True Heart YAWNS. TENDERHEART runs happily in the sparkling sunshine, holding a belly badge ball. TENDERHEART Hey Share, hey True Heart -- want to play a game of Belly Badge Ball? Share and True Heart SIGH. / No, thanks. Tenderheart leaves as LOVE-A-LOT and HARMONY walk through. LOVE-A-LOT Hey, girls! Harmony and I are going to pick bumbleberries in Rainshine Meadows. Want to come? Share and True Heart SIGH. / Nah. Love-A-Lot and Harmony leave as OOPSY enters. Oopsy (wearing a safety helmet) is riding a unicycle contraption. OOPSY Hey True Heart, hey Share. Check out my cool new Wheeligig Bell! Oopsy winds up the bell and RINGS, RINGS, but then the RING trails off... Because Share is staring, bored, off into space and True Heart is actually asleep. Oopsy super-winds up the bell -- RRIINNGG!! Share jumps and True Heart startles awake. <reaction cry!>
2. <waking up> And that s how I became the Queen of Care-a-Lot!-- Huh? Oopsy and Share look at True Heart. (CONT.) Oh, I was dreaming. OOPSY What s wrong with you guys? True Heart blinks sleepily as Share shrugs. Suddenly, RING RING! RING! We re just bored. It s the same old Belly Badge Game... The same old Rainshine Meadows... The same old... whatever Oopsy thing. OOPSY It s a Wheeligig Bell! I just wish something, anything exciting would happen in Care-A- Lot! We know, we know, you have a new bell, Oopsy. OOPSY That s not me! RING! RING! RING!! Oopsy, Share and True Heart turn to see GRUMPY,, and race by on a fire engine-type cloud. Share calls after them. Hey, what s going on?
3. There s a lost twinklet caught up in a tree! And we have to help it and fast. Share and True Heart look at each other. Now that s exciting! They run off after the fire engine. Oopsy wobbles behind them on his unicycle, ringing his bell. RING! EXT. SMARTHEART LIBRARY - MOMENTS LATER Share and True Heart rush up to the library. A sparkling TWINKLET shimmers up in the branches of a tall tree. Sparkles shoot wildly off the Twinklet, who cowers and WHIMPERS. Grumpy, Funshine, and Cheer are parked in front of the library. Cheer rubs her belly badge -- and a ladder made of rainbows shimmers up to the Twinklet. Funshine climbs up the ladder. Funshine reaches the Twinklet and holds out his hand. Everyone S. The Twinklet blinks huge eyes at the crowd. Everyone AWWWS. Then Funshine falls from the tree! But just in time, Grumpy rubs his belly badge and creates a cloud cushion. Everyone APPLAUDS. Share looks at True Heart. Now that was exciting! Off Share and True Heart, grinning at each other. EXT. S GARDEN - LATER True Heart and Share sit among the lollipops, still energized. Wow, Grumpy, Funshine, and Cheer were so heroic! And you know what? They deserve attention for it.
4. I agree! So we should think of a way to share this news with everyone. What if someone announced the news to everyone? Like this- She jumps up. (CONT.) (yelling) Hear ye! Hear ye! Here s the latest news! <GLARK!> She takes another deep breath -- and sucks in a PASSING BUG caught in her throat. Share COUGHS and the bug escapes, much annoyed. (CONT.) <COUGH> (to the bug) Heh... sorry. The Bug flies away. True Heart jumps up. How about this? Care-A-Lot has a web site -- why don t we create a news section for it? That way, we can instantly report the news to everyone. That s a great idea. We re going to be the best reporters Care-A-Lot has ever seen! Now let s go find some news! EXT. GRUMPY S GARAGE - DAY True Heart and Share, wearing old-style reporter s hats and carrying note pads, interview Grumpy. (NOTE: FOR THE REST OF THE EPISODE, AND WILL BE WEARING REPORTER S HATS AND CARRYING NOTE PADS.) True Heart also has a camera hanging around her neck. They stand by a LARGE MACHINE, that looks like a mega-lawn mower with robotic arms with clipper, leaf blower, and rake hands.
5. So what s the deal on the new invention, Grumpy? GRUMPY It s my new lawn keeper. It rakes the leaves and clears the grass in minutes! Grumpy hits a switch and the machine RUMBLES. It sucks in leaves, trims the grass, and hands True Heart a glass of lemonade. True Heart takes a sip. Wow, this is the best invention ever! Share scribbles furiously as True Heart SNAPS a picture. This will be front page news on the website! EXT. CARE BEAR SQUARE - DAY Cheer stands by the fountain as True Heart and Share listen attentively. I ve been working on a new rainbow design. She rubs her belly badge and sends up a shower of beautiful rainbow art. Share scribbles furiously as True Heart SNAPS a picture. That s beautiful, Cheer! We have to do a report on it! Right, everyone will want to see this! INT. SMARTHEART LIBRARY - DAY True Heart and Share work over a computer, a pile of papers and photos. True Heart scans a photo as Share uploads it. DING! Share and True Heart slap hands. Our first Care-a-Lot News report is all done!
6. I had no idea that reporting the news could be so much fun! I hope everyone likes it! They share a smile and excited giggles. & <excited giggles> EXT. CARE BEAR SQUARE - MOMENTS LATER A small crowd (Cheer, Harmony, Oopsy) are gathered Trueheart and Share stand next to a large, billboard-type in the square. electronic screen. Grumpy tightens a bolt at the screen s base. GRUMPY There ya go. The screen s all set. Thanks Grumpy. Funshine steps up, curious. Hey what s going on? Hi Funshine, you re just in time. That s right, watch the screen. Trueheart calls out to the others gathered there. Hey, everybody! We re here to present our first ever Care-a-Lot News report. Share presses a button on the screen. It LIGHTS UP. We don t see the screen, but we see the happy expressions it creates reflected on the Care Bears faces. CLOSE ON Cheer s delight. My rainbows look lovely! CLOSE ON Grumpy, who looks pleased.
7. GRUMPY There s my new invention! That thing will make everyone s yards beautiful! As everyone <MURMURS> their approval, True Heart and Share grin. <giggle> I think they like it! I can t wait to report more Care-a- Lot news! SMASH INT. SMARTHEART LIBRARY - THE NEXT DAY Share and True Heart sit at their desks, once again bored. What happened to all the news? I don t know. It s just another bright happy day in Care-a-Lot. Just like we reported yesterday. What are we going to do? At that moment, BEDTIME BEAR walks through. He looks distracted. Hi, Bedtime Bear! Bedtime just keeps walking, ignoring True Heart and Share. What s up with Bedtime? He looks... distracted. He looks asleep! BAM! On his way out, Bedtime walks into a bookcase. Books fly everywhere. But he just steps to the side and keeps walking out of the library. Curious, True Heart and Share follow him. EXT. SMARTHEART LIBRARY - CONTINUOUS Bedtime exits the library, followed by Share and True Heart. Bedtime walks through the BUSHES -- and comes out covered in
8. leaves. He walks through the FOUNTAIN -- and comes out dripping wet. He walks through Share s GARDEN -- and comes out covered in lollipop flowers. As Bedtime walks off toward an open area in the Square. Funshine lies on the grass, reading a book. He looks up, noticing the approaching Bedtime Bear. Hi ya, Bedtime. Um, Bedtime...? Bedtime just keeps walking... right over and on Funshine. <Ooof!> (CONT.) Funshine, realizing that Bedtime s sleepwalking gets up and dusts off his belly. (CONT.) Oh, you re sleep walking. Bedtime continues sleepwalking around the square. Share and True Heart join Funshine. Are you okay, Funshine? My belly badge is a little belly bruised, but I m fine. What s wrong with Bedtime? Oh, he s sleep walking. He does that sometimes. Not a big deal. What? Of course it is! Trueheart snaps a picture of Bedtime sleepwalking. We ll make this a headline story! Share and True heart run off. Funshine looks concerned and calls after them.
9. But -- Bedtime s embarrassed about his sleepwalking!! He might not want others to know... <sigh> But Share and True Heart don t hear him, they re gone. On his concerned expression we... FADE IN: ACT BREAK FADE OUT: INT. CAFE - DAY Love-A-Lot and Harmony are working in the cafe. Harmony is mixing up a fruit smoothie. HARMONY These bumbleberries we picked in Rainshine Meadows are going to make the best smoothie s ever! Harmony hits the blender. It WHIRS at a low speed. They watch the blender for a beat, then Love-a-Lot turns to Harmony. LOVE-A-LOT You know what I d love? If we could make this go faster. HARMONY Right! Super-smoothie speed! Harmony turns up the blender. IT WHIRS LOUDER and SHAKES. Suddenly, the blender top flies off and SMOOTHIE SPRAYS ALL OVER THE CAFE, Harmony, Love-A-Lot. A stunned beat. Love-a-Lot licks some of the smoothie from around her smoothie-covered mouth. Harmony and Love-A-Lot exit. LOVE-A-LOT Mmmm, that s the yummiest mess ever! HARMONY I ve got cleaning supplies at my house. Let s go get them. CLOSE ON Share and True Heart, looking in through the Cafe windows. EXT. CAFE - CONTINUOUS Share and True Heart look over the mess.
10. Love-A-Lot and Harmony made a huge mess. And they didn t clean it up! Trueheart SNAPS a picture. EXT. GRUMPY S HOUSE - DAY Grumpy proudly stands in front of his house, watching as his lawn machine has just completed trimming his lawn. A final rogue leaf floats into the yard -- a tentacle-like mechanical arm LEAPS OUT and grabs the leaf. Grumpy smiles and stretches. GRUMPY Ah, a perfect job! That s what I like! Grumpy enters his house. Suddenly, a BIG GUST OF WIND blows through, scatting leaves all over the place. The gust knocks the machine over too, making it look all askew. REVEAL Share and True Heart standing behind a bush. Grumpy s new invention is a complete failure. We better report it. Trueheat SNAPS a picture. EXT. CARE BEAR SQUARE - LATER Another small crowd (Cheer, Grumpy, Love-A-Lot, Harmony, Bedtime) are gathered by the fountain and the large, electronic billboard screen. And now for the latest edition of the Care-a-Lot News! Extra, extra -- hear all about it!
11. As everyone turns their faces to the screen, expectantly. (CONT.) Hear about Bedtime the Sleepwalker! CLOSE ON Bedtime, who looks stricken. Hear all about Love-A-Lot and Harmony trashing the Care-A-Lot cafe! CLOSE ON Love-A-Lot and Harmony, looking surprised and confused. Hear all about Grumpy s latest invention -- which is a complete failure! CLOSE ON Grumpy, who looks mad. Everyone turns annoyed looks on Share and True Heart. HARMONY Who said we didn t clean up our mess? GRUMPY My invention wasn t a failure! Why did you tell everyone that Bedtime was a sleepwalker? WIDER as a sleepwalking Bedtime enters and bumps into a tree. <GROUP ANGRY WALLA> as Share and True Heart frown, defensive. You guys really messed up. As reporters, it was your responsibility to make sure your stories were true. We re just reporting things as we saw them. Yep. Just the way we saw them.
12. Well, sometimes what you see is only half the story. And sometimes, not everything needs to be reported. Cheer gives an embarrassed -looking Bedtime a sympathetic smile. True Heart and Share look defensive. We don t control what happens. We just report it. It s not our fault if you don t like it! True Heart and Share storm off, leaving angry Care Bears behind them. EXT. S HOUSE - LATER True Heart and Share walk towards Share s garden. Both are frowning. I don t know what everyone is so mad about. I know! All we re doing is sharing the news. You think Care-A-Lot would be grateful for a little excitement. Hey, what s that? True Heart and Share stop just outside of Share s garden. Bushes rustle. Someone s in my garden! They step behind a tree to conceal themselves. Just then, Oopsy steps out of the garden. His arms are filled with what look like FLOWERS (Lollypop Posies).
13. From behind the tree, True Heart SNAPS a picture. As Oopsy walks away, True Heart and Share step out from the tree. They look at each other. Did you see that? Oopsy didn t have permission to be in my garden! You know what that means. / Oopsy s a thief! As True Heart and Share run off... INT. SMARTHEART LIBRARY - DAY Share and True Heart work over a computer. Share CLICKS the keyboard -- and BEEP! A picture of Oopsy, holding the lollypop flowers comes up. Share reads the screen. Okay, here s the report- (reading) Breaking news! (reading) Today Oopsy was spotted outside Share s garden taking an armful off Lollypop Posies! They look at each other, serious. This is a BIG story. EXT. CAFE - DAY Cheer, Love-A-Lot and Harmony clean up. A COMPUTER BEEPS. They look at it. Cheer reads. Oopsy s a thief?
14. She looks at Love-A-Lot and Harmony, concerned. INT. GRUMPY S GARAGE - DAY Grumpy is fixing his leaf machine. His computer BEEPS! Grumpy reads the screen. GRUMPY Oopsy s a thief! In his surprise, he turns and KNOCKS OVER his lawn keeper. LEAVES go flying everywhere, covering Grumpy completely. EXT. CARE BEAR SQUARE - DAY Funshine, Oopsy stand next to the electronic billboard. Oopsy s PICTURE pops up with a headline -- that Funshine reads. Oopsy s a thief? OOPSY Wow, I always thought he was such a great guy. PUSH IN ON OOPSY S FACE as it sinks in. OOPSY (CONT.) Wait a minute! That s me! Cheer, Harmony, Tenderheart, True Heart and Share join them. Oopsy turns pleading looks on his friends. There he is! Oopsy, the lollipop thief! OOPSY Wait, I didn t steal anything! I was just pulling some lolliweeds for Share. She s been too busy to work in her Garden. I was just trying to help. Look, we know what we saw. Cheer moves in, giving the girls a stern look.
15. Well, perhaps you need to look a little closer. Cheer hits a button on the screen. It ZOOMS in on the lollipops which are dull colors and look wilted. That doesn t prove anything. Except those Lolly pop Posies look pretty dull and ugly. Share squints at the screen, then deflates, realizing. She turns to Oopsy. Oh... you re right... oh no- they re just lolliweeds. (CONT.) Oopsy... I m so sorry. I just thought that- You thought that it would make a great story without double checking to see what the real story was. Share and True Heart look ASHAMED. Now do you understand what I was saying? You weren t being responsible in your reporting! But we thought we were... You just told the truth as you saw it, without investigating it. Look how unhappy you ve made everyone! PAN ACROSS Bedtime, sleepy but angry, Love-A-Lot and Harmony, scowling, and Grumpy still unhappily covered in leaves. Share SIGHS and True Heart put her hands over her mouth, ashamed.
16. You re right, Cheer. We just got caught up in how exciting it was to share the news. I m sorry. I m sorry, too. But I think I know how to make things right. She looks at True Hearts, who smiles and nods. By cleaning up the cafe... Helping Grumpy fix his invention... Finishing the weeding for Oopsy... But before that, we have one more story to report... EXT. CARE SQUARE - DAY Share and True Heart stand in the square, turning on the big screen - Images of both their faces appear on the screen as they shout: & TRUEHEART Reporters get it wrong! Big Apology to everyone! Share and True Heart are really, really sorry! FRAME UP in the FG on Funshine, Grumpy, and Cheer. GRUMPY Now that s what I call good reporting. THE END FADE OUT:
