FADE IN: THE CARE BEARS Growing Pains Episode #104a EXT. CARE-A-LOT - DAY WE swoop through the clouds, down over Care-a-Lot and over S HOUSE and to her garden in her back yard. EXT. BEAR S GARDEN - DAY The garden is beautiful. CARE BEARS (including,, and ) are excitedly milling around, enjoying everything they see. CARE BEARS Oh this is beautiful./share is such a great gardener!/look at those flowers!/etc. Share watches her friends, pleased they re having a good time. Share, you have the best garden in Care-a-lot! Thank-you, Funshine. And so far I haven t fallen on any of it. Well, thank-you, Oopsy. Oopsy looks around the garden with concern. Um... you don t have any flowers that are-- prickly, do you? Just the roses. Ooo, I ll be careful then. Oopsy starts to walk on, but trips and tumbles o.s. (PARTIAL O.S.) (CONT.) <Whooaaaaa!> (beat) Oopsie... It s okay, I missed the roses!
2. Grumpy walks past a patch of flowers that seem to move and <LAUGH> as he goes by. He stops and turns... the flowers freeze. He moves to leave again, but the flowers <LAUGH> again. He spins around and glares at the unmoving flowers. What type of flowers are these? <giggle> Why Grumpy, those are giggle gardenias. The flowers all start laughing again. Share smiles at Grumpy. (CONT.) And I think they like you! The flowers <laugh> again. Grumpy turns folds his arms and frowns. Hmmph! Too noisy. I like quiet flowers. He exits, Share and the flowers giggle together. <giggling> Cheer enters, joining Share. Share your flowers are wonderful! I wish I could have a garden like yours. Cheer Bear looks thoughtful-- Thanks, Cheer. It s not that hard to do. Just takes a little care, sunshine, water, seeds, and it does the growing all by itself! But you have to give it some time, it ll take a few weeks. DISSOLVE TO: INT. BEAR S HOUSE - DAY Share Bear is in BED, just waking up. She stretches, then hops out of bed with excitement.
3. I wonder who s going to come and visit my garden today? Share throws open the door to her garden and her face falls. (CONT.) Where is everyone? REVERSE ON Share s garden. There s nobody in sight! CUT TO: EXT. BEAR S GARDEN - CONTINUOUS Share Bear looks around, she s alone in her garden. She looks sad. I don t understand. My garden s been full of visitors every day for weeks, but no one s here today! Suddenly, Oopsy Bear runs up, out of breath. Share grins, relieved. Hey Share... <pant> am...<pant> I...<pant> late? Nope, you re the first one here. The first one? (then) Oopsie! Oopsy turns around and jogs off. Share looks alarmed. Oopsy shrugs with a smile. Share is dumbfounded. Oopsy! Why are you leaving? I was sposta go to Cheer s garden. That s where everybody is! Cheer? But... I m the only one with a garden!
4. Not anymore! C mon and see! Oopsy runs off happily. Share starts to follow, but pauses and looks back at her own garden. I m sure it s not as nice as m y garden. Share then races after Oopsy to join him. CUT TO: EXT. BEAR S GARDEN - SOON Care Bears (not including Grumpy) walk around Cheer s garden - at this point we don t have a clear look at the garden. CARE BEARS <impressed walla> Oopsy runs up, followed by Share. s smile turns to a look of surprise at what she sees o.s. PANNING S GARDEN - it s impressive. There are RAINBOW FLOWERS that spin like pinwheels, trees with vine-like TIRE SWINGS, TULIPS that SING, and a TOY BUSH that s filled with small dolls, trains, yo-yos, etc. (O.S.) Rainbow whirly flowers? Swinging trees...? Tuned tulips...? a toy bush?!!! Funshine leans into shot, a tire swing around his middle with a vine continuing O.S. Isn t this great? Cheer really knows how to grow a garden! Funshine lifts up his feet and swings out of SHOT with a- (CONT.) Wheeeeeee! But... so do I! Share overhears as AMIGO BEAR, SURPRISE BEAR and BEDTIME BEAR talk to Cheer. She s trimming a Care Bear TOPIARY.
5. Bedtime nods sleepily-- AMIGO Que bonito! Look at all the colors! BEDTIME I had to wake up to see this. It s the most peaceful garden I ve been to-- <yawn> perfect for a nap... SURPRISE What a nice surprise, Cheer! Your garden is even more beautiful tha n Share s! Share is shocked to hear this, she sinks behind some bushes. (to herself) (hurt) More beautiful...?! (resolved) Hmmph! We ll see about that! Share stomps away... EXT. BEAR S GARDEN - LATER Share sulks around her garden, muttering to herself. She eyes the flowers- No wonder nobody wants to come to my garden. It s not as big as Cheer s. (CONT.) Or as colorful. She shakes her head at the lollipop trees. (CONT.) Or as fun. She sighs as she sits down, chin in paws. (CONT.) Even I d rather be at Cheer s. Share looks over her garden... thinking... DISSOLVE TO:
6. (CONT.) I need to make my garden more special, then everyone will want to come back. But how...? <gasp> I bet Grumpy can help me! Share smiles as she gets an idea and races o.s. DISSOLVE TO: INT. BEAR S WORKSHOP - LATER Grumpy puts the finishing touches on a LARGE STONE FOUNTAIN. He admires it, and it springs a LEAK. Panicked, he puts a finger in the hole. But now he can t reach his tools. (O.S.) Grumpy? Are you there? Grumpy starts to go to her, then remembers he can t. In here! Fixing this garden fountain for Cheer. Share walks in, looking disheartened. You re fixing a fountain for Cheer s garden? It s not fair, even you re making her garden more special than mine! Grumpy raises an eyebrow, still working on the fountain. Share furrows her brow. You re not jealous, are you? Jealous? Grumpy nods. That meany greeny feeling you get inside when you want something that someone else has? Share thinks on this, clearly in denial. No I... I don t think so.
7. Grumpy nods. Good. Cuz I don t have enough parts to make another fountain. Grumpy reaches for a high shelf, but remembers he can t let go of the fountain. (CONT.) I ve got something new you can try - grow glitter. It ll make even the scraggliest weed sprout up. Grumpy rubs his belly badge. A cloud appears. It skims to a high shelf and scoops up a SPARKLING POUCH, floating down to Share. (CONT.) Use one pinch, and only one pinch! Share looks at the glitter inside. Sure thing! Thanks Grumpy! She exits, waving good-bye. Grumpy absentmindedly removes his finger from the fountain and waves back... but he is instantly blasted with water from the fountain and knocked o.s. <sputtering>! Aaaack! EXT. BEAR S GARDEN - A LITTLE LATER Share Bear stands with the pouch of glitter in her hand. It s not jealousy if I just want to share my garden with everyone, is it? CUT TO: Share takes out a pinch of the glitter. She sprinkles a little on the giggle flowers near her feet. SHOOOMP! They grow twice their size, their tiny laughs getting a little deeper. Share is astonished and thrilled. Wow! (CONT.)
8. Share spins and sprinkles some on a different batch of flowers (BLUEBELLS). SHOOMP! They grow bigger too, <RINGING> out a little tune that ends in bright chord to punctuate their change. (CONT.) <pleased giggle!> Share sprinkles the rest of the pinch on her lollipop trees. SHOOOOMP! They sprout up toward the sky. Oooooh! (CONT.) Share looks around at her garden, impressed. (CONT.) Now my garden is special! (then) But is it better than Cheer s? Share looks indecisive, then reaches for the pouch again. (CONT.) If one pinch is good, then... two must twice as good! Share sprinkles another pinch around, making everything double in size again. CUT TO: EXT. BEAR S GARDEN - CONTINUOUS The Bears are still all enjoying themselves. Funshine is pushing Amigo in a vine swing when suddenly Amigo sees something O.S. AMIGO Que es eso?! Look! In Share s garden! The other bears look to where he s pointing - GIANT LOLLIPOP TREES are growing out of Share s garden. CARE BEARS (EXCEPT ) Whoaaaa... I didn t know lollipop trees could grow that big! BEDTIME I wonder if they taste better than regular size lollipop trees?
9. SURPRISE Let s go find out! CARE BEARS (EXCEPT ) <agreeing walla> The Care Bears in Cheer s garden stampede for the exit. Cheer looks panicked. Wait! Where are you all going?! Doesn t anyone want to have a flower sing-a-long?! She gestures to her singing flowers, that sing a quick barbershop chorus saying good-bye to the exiting Care Bears. SINGING FLOWERS <Goodbye! So long! Farewell! Take care!> He leaves with the other bears in a rush. Funshine is the last one to go, but a frowning Cheer snags him. Funshine, wait! I need your help! Funshine is torn. Looks toward the lollipops in the distance, then turns back to do his friend duty. What? Um... okay. (calling out) But somebody better save me one of those gi-normous lollipops! EXT. BEAR S GARDEN - SOON Share beams as the Care Bears from Cheer s garden (all but Funshine, Cheer and Oopsy) rush into her garden. CARE BEARS Wow!/ This is amazing!/<impressed walla> CUT TO: Share smiles, enjoying the attention. AMIGO Que fantastico! It s like a garden for giants! Bedtime curls up in a HUGE FLOWER.
10. Share milks it a little. BEDTIME <yawn> I can actually take a nap inside a flower... it s so comfy. SURPRISE This is really beautiful, Share! Thanks. Did you notice that Cheer s flowers are much smaller than mine? DISSOLVE TO: EXT. BEAR S GARDEN - SOON Funshine is clearly exhausted. He rubs his belly badge. A SUN appears and floats up to join a whole row of suns beaming down on Cheer s flowers. Funshine slumps under a tree. <whew> Cheer, I really don t think more sun means that your flowers will grow bigger. Maybe more water then... There must be some way to make my garden better than Share s. Cheer is pouring BUCKET after BUCKET of water on her flowers, looking like a one-bear fire brigade. Why do you want it better? They re both nice. (O.S.) (strained) Where do you want this? Grumpy staggers ONSCREEN, holding the huge stone fountain in his arms. Cheer ignores him to answer Funshine. Because she s trying to out do me! If my garden isn t more special, then no one will come to mine. Grumpy plunks the fountain on top of the topiary. <CRUNCH!> <straining> (then) Perfect.
11. Funshine scratches his head. I dunno Cheer. That sounds a little...jealous. Cheer looks chastened, but then can t contain herself. Oh... (then) I just don t know how Share got her garden so big! Grumpy joins them. For that you need Grow Glitter. Like I gave Share. Grow glitter? You gave Share Grow Glitter and not me? Now you sound jealous too. Cheer looks defensive, also in denial about her motives. No... I just want us both to have beautiful gardens. Grumpy frowns, not completely convinced. Cheer smiles extra big to show her sincerity. Grumpy frowns, then gives in. Hmmph. I ve got one more bag of grow glitter you can have. But only use one pinch, got it? Cheer nods. Just then, Oopsy Bear runs into the garden. <panting> Did I miss all the giant lollipop trees? (deadpan) Wrong garden. Oopsie!
12. Oopsy runs off and Cheer shakes her head. GARDEN MONTAGE - under upbeat <MUSIC> WIPE TO: EXT. BEAR S GARDEN - DAY Cheer frowns at the large lollipops in the distance, and sprinkles one, two, THREE pinches of Glitter Grow on her garden. <SHWOOOOOOOMP!> Everything grows three times its size. Cheer nods approvingly. I/C BEAR S GARDEN - CONTINUOUS All the Care Bears present (not including Grumpy, Funshine, and Oopsy) turn away from Share and look at Cheer s huge plants in the distance. Impressed, they hurry off toward Cheer s garden. Share slumps, sad, then gets a determined look on her face. She pulls out her pouch of Glitter Grow and adds one, two, three, FOUR pinches! <FWOOOOOOMP!> Everything in her garden grows to jungle proportions! I/C BEAR S GARDEN - CONTINUOUS All the Care Bears that ran over from Share s are marvelling at Cheer s garden, until they see Share s garden grow EVEN BIGGER in the distance! Totally shocked, they hurry out of Cheer s garden. She glares. Pulls out her Glitter Grow pouch. Grabs a pawful. This means war! WIDE ON CARE-A-LOT - CONTINUOUS Cheer s garden grows bigger and all the Care Bears run from Share s to Cheer s. (Oopsy is consistently a BEAT behind each time in the following) But before they can get there, Share s garden grows bigger! The Care Bears turn around to run to her garden. Then Cheer s grows! They turn. Share s grows! They turn again! Finally, all the Care Bears just sit down in the middle between the two gardens, exhausted. Watching, as the gardens continue to GROW back and forth in competition. DISSOLVE TO: EXT. BEAR S WORKSHOP - SAME TIME Funshine runs into Grumpy s workshop. unfinished machine, tinkering. Uh Grumpy... Grumpy is under some
13. He reacts, bumping his head- <CLANG>! Owwwwww! (then, dry) Yes, Funshine? I don t suppose there s anything that will un-do the effects of Grow Glitter, is there? Grumpy slides out from under the machine, frowning. Why would anyone want to un-do Grow Glitter? It just takes one pinch. He sees the scene out the window and TAKES in surprise. Grumpy heads for the exit. (CONT.) Bramblin butterbugs! They didn t use just one pinch! Come on. EXT. BEAR S GARDEN - SOON Grumpy and Funshine arrive outside Cheer s garden, but it s all overgrown with GIANT FLOWERS and impossible to penetrate. Cheer? Are you in there? You have to stop using that Grow Glitter! EXT. BEAR S GARDEN - SAME TIME Grumpy tries to push through the vegetation, but it pushes him right back out as it grows. He YELLS- Share Bear! This jealousy between you two has gone far enough, do you hear me?! The giant giggle flowers laugh <LOUDLY> and <DEEPLY>. Grumpy has to cover his ears. (CONT.) I can t even hear me! INT. BEAR S GARDEN - CONTINUOUS Share is surrounded in a jungle of huge flowers. Her lollipop trees tower into the sky. She can t really reach anything. She strains with the Grow Glitter pouch.
14. Suddenly a thought hits her - I can t reach the tops anymore! (CONT.) But I can t stop now! What if Cheer s garden is bigger? And better?! Share reaches into the Glitter Glow pouch and pours a pawful over herself. With a loud FRRRROOOOOSH she grows to Godzilla size, towering out over her garden. INT. BEAR S GARDEN - CONTINUOUS Cheer Bear stops growing her garden (it s as big as Share s) when she sees Share grow up toward the sky. She gets a determined look on her face. <gasp!> Oh no you don t! You can t out-do me. Cheer pours a pawful of Glitter Grow on herself and grows up to the sky too - FRRROOOOOOOSH! When the bears are eye-to-eye, Cheer frowns at Share- (CONT.) Share! What are you doing?! Me?! You re the one who tried to take everyone away from my garden! Share dumps the rest of the Glitter Glow on her head. GROWS UP PAST THE CLOUDS! Cheer follows suit, GROWING TO FOLLOW! CUT TO: INT. GRIZZLE S LAIR - HANGER LAB - DAY GRIZZLE dons a pair of goggles, he is strapped into some sillylooking flying machine that has big goofy spray nozzles and tanks of liquid on it. He gives a thumbs-up to MR. BEAKS. GRIZZLE At last, Mr. Beaks! After all these years, my sticky-plane is complete! With it I, Grizzle, will seal Care-a-Lot and those Care Bears in stickiness for good! Nothing can stop me! <laugh!>
15. He pulls back a lever, that causes the hanger door to OPEN! Revealing Cheer and Share stomping around on Care-a-Lot and towering over everything. Grizzle s face turns white. He quickly pulls the lever again, slamming the door to the hanger closed. GRIZZLE (CONT.) <whimper> I m gonna need a bigger sticky plane. CUT TO: EXT. CARE-A-LOT - CONTINUOUS Below the clouds, the Care Bears dodge Share and Cheer s feet, now HUGE and STOMPING. The skies <GROWL> with their arguing - it sounds like thunder from down below. I didn t take everyone from your garden! They came to mine because it was better! Share s knee knocks over lollipop trees, and crushes the gardens below. Amigo runs to safety as trees splinter around him-- Surprise ducks as one of Cheer s feet <CRUNCHES> through her garden FENCE and demolishes Grumpy s fountain. Funshine dodges the feet, takes shelter in Grumpy s workshop. INT. BEAR S WORKSHOP - CONTINUOUS Grumpy works away, assembling some o.s. machine-- or so it seems. I knew you d come up with a machine that would stop this! (then) Um...That is what it s for, right? Grumpy nods, then holds up what he s been making- a MEGAPHONE. Only if I can get those two bears to listen! Grumpy rubs his belly badge. A big CLOUD appears. Funshine sees what he s up to and rubs his belly badge too, creating a sunbeam helicopter rotor for the cloud. Grumpy climbs on as the cloud zooms for the sky. CUT TO:
16. EXT. CLOUDS - SAME TIME Cheer and Share are arguing, now giant nose to giant nose. I had a garden first! But you told me how to grow my own! Well I didn t think you d steal all my friends! Grumpy s cloud putters up between them. Well I didn t think you d have a problem with sharing! Grumpy holds up his megaphone and clears his throat loudly! (megaphone) AAAAAHEM! Both bears stop arguing, startled. (CONT.) (megaphone) Somebody used more than just one pinch! Both bears look chastened a little embarrassed. No- I only used one pinch... a lot of times. Me too. Grumpy frowns at the two of them. I just wanted my garden to be pretty! (megaphone) It already was pretty! Share nods reluctantly.
17. I guess... I got jealous of Cheer s garden. I wanted mine to be like hers, because everyone liked it. As Share and Cheer start to talk through their problems, silver sparkles (the Grow Glitter) falls away from them, magically shrinking them down a size. And then I got jealous of your garden. It was so special, nobody wanted to visit mine anymore. The girls shimmer with silver sparkles and shrink down another size. Grumpy nods. (megaphone) So you tried to out-do one another. I didn t mean to be so mean to Cheer. We weren t acting much like friends, were we? I m sorry, Share. I m sorry too. I should have told you how I felt. Me too, before I got carried away trying to out-do you. Cheer and Share shrink down even more. I hope you ll still come visit my garden. (smiles) Of course... if you ll visit mine? The bears smile and hug. With that, the final silver sparkles fall away from them as they shrink back down to their normal sizes. EXT. BEAR S GARDEN - CONTINUOUS But when they finish hugging, they are startled by the destruction
18. around them. Both gardens are a complete smashed. ON w/megaphone as his cloud copter lands nearby. (megaphone) Too bad there aren t any gardens left to visit. REVEAL Cheer and Share covering their ears. Grumpy realizes he s still using the megaphone and sheepishly puts it down. (CONT.) Oh, sorry. Cheer & Share turn and exchange embarrassed/guilty looks. I guess we over did it with the Grow Glitter, huh? Cheer puts an arm around her friend. Maybe we can grow a new garden, together. Yeah...I know I won t be jealous if we share. Share and Cheer smile to each other. Let s get this cleaned up. Then we can start planting! We pull back as Share and Cheer start cleaning things up... before we fade out, an out-of-breath Oopsy rushes into shot. <panting> Am I still in time to see the giant Care Bears? He looks up and around, then sees normal sized Cheer and Share. Oopsie. (CONT.) FADE OUT: THE END
