1 2015 ACTIVITIES OF RIËTTES DANCE STUDIO Hierdie jaar het begin met die Pat Gush Strek kursus. Hierdie kursus is vir die TDA dans onderwyseresse aangebied en het gegaan oor veilige strekke vir groeiende kinders. Ilze de Beer het haar A.I.D.T. modern onderwys eksamen afgele met Riëtte Nel as haar onderwyseres. S.A. CHAMPIONSHIPS was new on our calendar this year. On Friday, 3 rd April registrations started in Rustenburg with excited dancers Karla van Riet, Thabisa Nxawe, Tammy Kumm, Jenice Sauer, Renoula Prousaloglou and Valesca von Memerty rearing to go. The dancing section was very competitive with nearly 3000 entries and standards set were high. We are so proud of Thabisa Nxawe who received the Silver Medal for her Hip Hop in age group years, and Valesca von Memerty who received the Silver Medal for her Ballet in the age group years. Only one Gold, one Silver and one Bronze Medal is awarded in each age group for each performing art. We are so proud of these ladies.

2 During the course of the week auditions were also held for the Beyond 2000 Showcase. (12 years and older). Dancers representing their studios and provinces from all over South Africa endured in this event on the Wednesday and came together in good spirit, motivation and great attitude. All five senior dancers from Riëtte s Dance Studio were successful in the auditions. They had to learn the choreography and prepare for the big performance in the Showcase on the Saturday evening. During practice sessions no teachers or parents were allowed to watch or assist in any way. A very big surprise awaited our studio as we were called to perform three of our five solo ballet entries at the Showcase. What an honour for Valesca, Renoula and Thabisa to perform their three dances! All five girls also excelled in their respective group performances as part of the Showcase. The main focus of selecting dancers for the performance is to expose the contestants to show business. The long hours, patience, hard practice sessions, sore muscles, bruised muscles and no parent or teacher to run to. To learn a new routine fast and to cope with the amount of other competitors sharing a common goal. To work with and understand different choreographers. To meet different dancers and to make new friends. To learn different styles of dance genres and of course most importantly to have fun! The HIP HOP SYLLABUS COURSE held in Bloemfontein was attended by Robyn Johnson, Ashleigh Venter, Karien Koukakis, Haumene Geldenhuis and Tammy Kumm. RAD PRE-EXAM WORKSHOP held in EAST LONDON is a very important workshop which is conducted by a ballet examiner every year. This course was well attended. The examiner goes through the syllabus with the ballet dancers and any changes in syllabus are usually shared at this course. THE BEAUTIFUL ART OF BALLET! RAD BALLET EXAMS (Royal Academy of Dance) were held on the 1 st July. The examiner was Mrs Joyce Myroff. Three Primary dancers achieved the Distinction award. They were Rize Christensen, Izelle van Vuuren and Jani Louw. Each year around 230,000 candidates from all over the world partake in the RAD dance exams.

FREE STATE DANCE AWARDS Seven students from Riëtte s Dance Studio attended the Free State Dance Awards which was held at the Civic Theatre in Bloemfontien on the 15 th and 16 th May.

3 FREE STATE DANCE AWARDS Seven students from Riëtte s Dance Studio attended the Free State Dance Awards which was held at the Civic Theatre in Bloemfontien on the 15 th and 16 th May. The Dance Offs, being the qualifying stage prior to this event, was held during the weekend of the 1 st May in Bloemfontein. Those who Qualified at the Dance Offs then competed in the Free State Dance Awards. Result: GOLD 85%+ MODERN Age Group: 9 10 years. Kamerin McPherson FOTO: KAMERIN McPHERSON EISTEDDFOD 2015 (Eistedd@Alies) Hierdie jaar was daar inskrywings van veertien skole waarvan Riëtte se Dansateljee 30 items ingeskryf het. Die beoordelaars was Mej Nicole Windell en Mev Renee Ferreira. Dancers who achieved Triple Gold 90% to 100% were: Hip Hop Solos: Karla van Riet, Motheo Selebedi, Thabisa Nxawe and Jenice Sauer. Hip Hop Group Freaks Phiwe Manona, Aphiwe Nyezi, Thabisa Nxawe, Tammy Kumm, Thabo Mpelwane, Jenice Sauer, Yanga Beje and Karien Koukakis. Dancers who achieved Double Gold 85% to 89% were: Modern / Contemporary / Jazz Solos: Valesca von Memerty, Renoula Prousalogolou and Karla van Riet. Modern / Contemporary / Jazz Duet: Valesca von Memerty and Renoula Prousaloglou Modern / Contemporary / Jazz Trio: Tammy Kumm, Jenice Sauer and Haumene Geldenhuis. Ballet Solos: Tammy Kumm, Jenice Sauer, Valesca Von Memerty, Renoula Prousaloglou Musical Theatre Trio: Rize Christensen, Izelle van Vuuren, Ilne Prinsloo Hip Hop Solo: Thabo Mpelwane A.I.D.T. EXAMS - 43 Students of our Studio partook in their A.I.D.T. Modern, Medal Performers Test and Hip Hop exams on the 14 th, 15 th and 16 th November with stunning results. This is an International Exam with high standards expected. During the Modern Syllabus Exam all students achieved 70% and above with distinctions awarded to Jenice Sauer, Caro Hamman, Renoula Prousaloglou and Valesca von Memerty. (Distinction being 90% and above.)

The Modern Medal Tests saw all the students achieve 80% and above with distinctions awarded to Kamerin Mc Pherson, Jordann Johnson, Nerine Cloete, Karla van Riet, Tammy Kumm and Jenice Sauer.

The Hip Hop exam saw all the students achieve 75% and above with distinctions (called Da Bomb in this exam) awarded to Thabisa Nxawe, Jenice Sauer, Motheo Selebedi and Yanga Beje as well as for the group dance called Freaks in which Phiwe Manona, Thabisa Nxawe, Tammy Kumm, Jenice Sauer, Aphiwe Nyezi, Thabo Mpelwane, Yanga Beje and Karien Koukakis took part. Ons kleintjies het ook die voorreg gehad om hulle Pre-Grade Modern eksamen te kon doen. Hulle het almal Eligible to continue to the next level sertifikate ontvang. Hulle is Chanelle de Bruyn, Farin Davids, Mardi Naude, Lia van der Westhuizen, Tanique Kumm, Lina Yalezo, Vuya Madlolo, Yonelda Froneman, Alicia Botha, Angelique Smith en Zante de Bruyn. Pre Grade children are taught to develop discipline, musicality, enjoyment and the exams are usually danced in a small group. The A.I.D.T. is an examining body and non-profit making association, whose aim is to promote the teaching and standard of Modern and Hip Hop dancing. A comprehensive syllabus in all sections enables students from the age of 5 (five) years upwards, to learn the correct technique, develop discipline and musicality while enjoying the dancing experience. Careful attention is given to anatomy, as used in dance, to avoid injury through incorrect use. Older children learn through a carefully developed syllabus, moving through several grades, each employing more technique, and encouraging a basic knowledge of anatomy pertaining to the work, as well as musicality and presentation. There are 9 Modern and 4 Hip Hop grade exams, at present. Advanced dancers proceed through 3 Modern and 2 Hip Hop Major exams that will eventually lead into more professional dancing, and a final Solo Performers exam, if the necessary standard has been achieved. The aim of the Association and Riëtte s Dance Studio is to inspire confidence in a student s ability to achieve and encourage their personal development through dance. 5 Sadly we have three matric learners leaving our studio. Valesca von Memerty, Renoula Prousalogou and Ashleigh Venter have been part of the studio since they were 4 years old. They will most certainly be missed and we wish them a bright future ahead.
