1 CATCH A RISING STAR DANCE FESTIVALS ONLINE REGISTRATION is available on our website Catch a rising Star is a family run festival company led by Carol Adams: "As an instructor myself, I was always looking for opportunities for my students to perform. I have been working in Central Alberta to promote dance in rural areas. As the dance industry grows in rural areas, a dance festival needs to be tailored to accommodate small town studios and smaller studios in general. Studios with similar programs are invited to our festivals. Most festivals, we often have access to, challenge us to compete with dancers from large city studios that are able to offer much more to their students. Small studios with similar attributes deserve their own festival without the strong competitive atmosphere. We want a fair and fun festival of our own. Our Tour includes two Catch a Rising Star Dance Festivals, GALAXY Dance Festival and two NOVA Dance Challenges." Carol Adams (Festival Director) NO SURPRISES! We promise to keep our festivals running on our 'advertised' dates. We do not extend the festival to accommodate more entries. When our time capacity had been reach we cut off entries, so enter early to avoid disappointment! We offer three levels to suit your dancers. Novice Level for the beginner dancers Competitive Level for Dancers training under 6 hours per week Accelerated Level for Dancers training more than 6 hours per week. (please read further for details on levels) Our festivals are geared to award as many dancers as possible. We have adjudications approximately every 30 minutes! There is an average of one award in every four entries! There are plaques in every adjudication! On Stage scholarships and Choreography awards in every group adjudicaton! All participants are awarded a medal with their on stage adjudication! Every studio goes home with a High Score Award! Cash awarded at the Top Awards Ceremonies on Sunday... Last year CARS awarded more than $17,000 in cash awards. Follow our Facebook Page for the latest updates.

2 CATEGORIES & LEVELS CATEGORIES: Please select the categories that are offered on the entry form. Any routines that do not specifically fit into any of the listed categories can be entered as a Variety routine. E.g. clogging, multi disciplines etc. If you check off Variety, you may specify in writing beside your selection what the routine is. The Festival may combine disciplines within the program depending on the number of entries within a discipline. Any routine with a teacher participating or any adult routine (20+years) must be entered in the Open Category. Any teacher routines will not be qualified for top awards but will receive a medal placement and adjudication. CATEGORIES Tap No pre-recorded tap sounds. Routine must be 95% Tap technique. Jazz A routine incorporating a majority of jazz technique. Any routine with more than five gymnastic/acrobatic moves (where the hips are higher than the head) will need to be entered in an Acrobatic Catergory. Hip Hop Routine consisting primarily of hip-hop and street dance technique. To determine Novice classification, use either hip-hop or jazz training (whichever is greatest). Classical Ballet Routine incorporating classical ballet technique. Character Ballet Routine utilizing a majority of ballet technique to portray a character. Demi-character routines are included in this category. Lyrical Routine utilizing primarily jazz technique to express emotion. Balance, control and extension should be demonstrated. To determine Novice classification, use either lyrical, ballet or jazz training (whichever is greatest). Modern/Contemporary Routine incorporating primarily ballet, contemporary or modern technique. To determine Novice classification, use either contemporary, modern, jazz or ballet training (whichever is greatest) Musical Theatre In the Musical category it is a "catch all" category to include, Song & Dance music with or without lyrics, lip-syncing and musical theatre genre. To determine Novice classification, use the completed years of training in the dance discipline performed. Variety Do NOT use this category for Song & Dance (Song & dance music with or without lyrics and lip sync should all be in the musical theatre category) This category is for routines that do not fit into other performance categories. To determine Novice classification use the completed years of training in the dance discipline performed. Note: A routine that should be entered in one of the other performance categories should not be entered in this category. Please do not enter extra tap, jazz, lyrical, etc., routines in this category. National Routine of national origin, e.g., Highland, Polynesian, Ukrainian, East Indian, Bollywood.

3 Open This category is for any routine that does not seem appropriate in any of the above listed categories. This is also to incorporate student/teacher routines, student choreography etc. Please make a side note as to which discipline the routine is. Pointe A routine where 50% or more of the dancers are on pointe or 50% or more of the routine is performed on pointe. To determine Novice classification, use overall years of ballet training, not just pointe training. This is to include classical, character & modern/contemporary pointe routines. Acrobatic Routine incorporating a majority of acrobatic technique and tricks. To determine Novice classification, use either contemporary, modern, jazz or ballet training (whichever is greatest) THERE IS NO STUDENT CHOREOGRAPHY CATEGORY. Please enter any student choreography in the appropriate discipline, but remember that a student cannot compete against themselves in a category (same age, level and discipline) LEVELS Competitive is any dancer taking less than 6 hours of dance in a week that do not fit into the Novice category. *Most dancers will fit into this category. *Must include stretch and strength classes and additional rehearsal time in calculation Accelerated is any dancer taking 6 hours and more of dance per week. If the average within a group is below 6 years, then this does not apply. If the hours/week are 6 hours + then please check off the Accelerated Check box. *Must include stretch and strength classes and additional rehearsal time in calculation Novice dancers are encouraged to perform and will have their own criteria. Novice dancers will be defined as: Dancers 8-12 years of age in their first year of training Dancers 13+ years of age with 2 or less years of training DETERMINGING YEARS OF EXPERIENCE FOR NOVICE: Any training including and after the age of 6 shall be considered a year of training. Any training before the age of 6 does not need to be counted. Please see specific discipline descriptions above for details on calculating. *NOVICE Does not Apply to dancers under the age of 8* *This is not a category for experienced dancers doing their first solo*
