1 IMPORTANT INFORMATION Welcome to the (CCDC) COMMONWEALTH CUP DANCE CHAMPIONSHIP 2017 The Canadian Dance Organization & the South African Body of Dance in conjunction with Sun International are looking forward to hosting the first Commonwealth Cup dance Championship Dear National Director or Trainer: The Commonwealth Cup Dance Championships is open to all dancers and teachers regardless of what organizations they are affiliated with. Our mandate is to unite all dancers from all Associations that live in Commonwealth Countries, after all, we all have one thing in common and that is Dance. The competition is world class and offers many cash awards and special judges awards, medals, ribbons and certificates. We are also offering excellent dance workshops with renowned teachers from several countries Jordon Clark (Canada) from The Next Step, Matthew Clark (United States), Devon Perry (Australia Tap Dogs)... to name just a few. With large Cash Awards, superb competition and excellent dance workshops, all in a beautiful setting, this will be one event you and your dancers will not want to miss Sun City is known as one of the premier places in the world for family fun. 2 ADJUDICATING PANEL A rotating panel of judges will adjudicate this event and will comprise of International judges as well as local judges from SA. Members of the panel will be announced closer to the event ATM facilities There are ATM facilities located within the Sun City complex. It is subject to alteration, depending on the number of entries received. The organiser reserves the right to combine or cancel sections, if and when necessary. 3 CLOSING DATE FOR ENTRIES The Online Entry System is open. Entry Deadline is July 24 th, THIS DATE WILL BE STRICTLY ADHERED TO. HOW TO ENTER COMPETITION: Please go to and click on CDC this will take you to the entry system for the Commonwealth Dance World Cup ENTRY FEES The Entry Fee is as follows for S.A. Dancers only which includes the following Solos: R200 per solo Duos/Trio: R180 per dancer Small group s 4-7 dancers: R160 per dancer Large groups 8-16 dancers: R150 per dancer Line dancers: R150 per dancer Production 25 or more dancers: R150 per dancer Dancers have free entrance into the Sun Central Superbowl for the full duration of the Commonwealth Cup dance Championship. Includes a commemorative T-shirt and a souvenir programme. Entry Fees are NON-REFUNDABLE under any circumstances. NO ENTRIES WILL BE PROCESSED WITHOUT PROOF OF PAYMENT DANCE FLOOR The dance floor will be - 14m wide x 11m long. Workshops will be held in the Warrior Room See online for all the details regarding the amazing panel that will be giving workshops. Sun International supports the National Responsible Gambling Program. 4 PARKING Sun City Main Gate entrance fee: R60 per person which includes transfer from the main parking lot to Sun Central. If you have booked Sun City accommodation then you go through the hotel gate. No gate fee is then required. COMPETITION RULES DANCE DISCIPLINES: Ballet, Jazz, Modern/Contemporary, Lyrical, Tap, Showdance & Hip Hop AGE DIVISIONS: Children 6&under, 7-8, 9-10 Junior: 11-12, Adult: 15-16, 17&over HOW TO OBTAIN AGE: The age of the dancer will be the age they will be as of December 31, HOW TO DETERMINE the age for GROUPS: (average age) Average the age of the dancers. If the age is.5 or higher you round up,.4 or lower you would round down Example 1: = 61 Divide by number of dancers = 12.2 (they would dance in the age division) Example 2: = 64 Divide by number of dancers = 12.8 (they would dance in the age division) TIME LIMITS: Solo one dancer 1:45-2:15 Duet/Trio 2 3 dancers 1:45-2:15 Small Group 4-7 Dancers 2:30-3:00 Large Group 8-16 Dancers 2:30-3:30 Line Dancers 2:30 4:00 Production: 25 or more dancers 4-8 min. DANCE DISCIPLINES DESCRIPTIONS: Classical Ballet: Classical ballet is any of the traditional, formal styles of ballet, also called romantic ballet, that exclusively employ classical ballet technique. It is known for its aesthetics and rigorous technique (such as pointe work, turnout of the legs, and high extensions), its flowing, precise movements, and its ethereal qualities. Repertoire Ballet: (no min. time limit) refers to a complete inventory of dance pieces or numbers that a dancer or dance company knows or has ready to perform. Large ballet companies possess a large repertoire, or list, of ballets that their dancers are capable of performing or have already performed. Also Known As: repertory. Jazz: Jazz dancing is a form of dance that showcases a dancer's individual style and originality. Every jazz dancer interprets and executes moves and steps in their own way. Jazz dance has always been influenced by trends of the times/popular culture. There are many forms of Jazz Dance such as Broadway Jazz, Funky Jazz, Street Jazz, etc NO ACRO MOVES ARE ALLOWED IN JAZZ DANCE - Routines with acrobatic moves should enter the Showdance Division Modern/Contemporary - a form of contemporary theatrical and concert dance employing a special technique for Developing the use of the entire body in movements expressive of abstract ideas Lyrical: Lyrical dance is a fusion of ballet and jazz dance techniques. Lyrical dance challenges choreographers and dancers to use motion to interpret music and express emotion. A lyrical dancer's movements attempt to show the meaning of the music. Tap: Tap dance, style of dance in which a dancer wearing shoes fitted with heel and toe taps sounds out audible beats by rhythmically striking the floor or any other hard surface. Tap dancers make music with their feet using accents, syncopation, shading, clarity etc 4

5 Showdance: Showdance Show: is a routine based on a theme or storyline told through music, dance moves and costume Dance: is a high a high calibre of Dance usually based on Jazz technique that can also include many other forms of dance including acrobatic moves. However, acrobatics cannot dominate the routines Hip Hop: Solo, duo, Small Groups & Formations using Organizers Music. Same Rules as SABOD/IDO Rules JUDGES: 5 Official Judges will be used from 5 different countries JUDGES FEEDBACK: Video Judge is a proprietary, state-of-the-art video and audio recording system. Multiple audio tracks coupled with a powerful menu system allow teachers and students to listen to the judges comments while viewing the actual performance Scoring: Each Judge will score dancer (s) out of a possible score of 100, decimal points may be used. Example: = What do judges consider for their final score 1. Technique 2. Variety & Difficulty 3. Personality/Showmanship 4. Dynamics/ Energy Level/ 5. Style and Commitment 6. Preparation and Confidence 7. Costuming 8 Age appropriate: music, costume and choreography 9 Original or Interesting Choreography 10 General Audience Appeal COMPETITION AWARDS: In each age division and discipline dancers will receive Gold Medal for 1st place Silver Medal, 2nd place, Bronze Medal, 3rd place 4th-6th place Ribbon 7th place 20th place Certificate **Divisions that have more than 20 contestants the section will be split JUDGES SPECIAL AWARDS: Special awards will be given out throughout the week at adjudication presentation. These special awards will not be based on score but something special the judges may see in a dancer such as Most Potential Broadway Bound Fabulous Feet Award FORMAT OF COMPETITION: Dancers will compete in the Preliminary competition where they will be awarded a placement. FINALS Commonwealth Dance Championship Gala (30 Routines) All high score disciplines will compete against each other for the Commonwealth Cup Dance Championships and Cash Awards CHILDREN: 10 & UNDER (10 numbers) The top 5 scores from all the Dance Disciplines in Solo and Duet Trio will dance-off in the finals for the The top 5 scores from all the Dance Disciplines in Groups will dance-off in the finals for the JUNIOR: AGES (10 NUMBERS) The top 5 scores from all the Dance Disciplines in Solo and Duet Trio will dance-off in the finals for the 5

Cost: R150 Adults, R60 for kids under 12 years & R90 for pensioners & MVG card holders. This is for a full day irrespective of arrival times. Sun City Central Security will manage this process. T-SHIRT ORDERS & SIZES Dancers all receive ONE commemorative T-Shirt as part of their entry fee. T-shirts are to be ordered as follows: Dancer ONLINE Entries. This t-shirt size must be entered online along with the entry into the competition. Non-dancers (spectators, students, parents etc) who wish to order a commemorative t-shirt and dancers who require extra commemorative t-shirts, may do so by completing the attached t-shirt order form on page 8 and ing it to sabodcomps@icon.co.za with the proof of payment accompanying the order form.
