3 PAGE 3 How to try out for a sport at DRMS: 1. Attend a pre-season informational meeting with the coach. The coaches will describe their expectations of team members. 2. Verify that you meet the WCPSS eligibility standards. 3. Turn a completed WCPSS Middle School Athletic Participation Form (Form #2300) into the Athletic Trainer. Form is available on DRMS website: - then go to Athletics. Make sure you keep a copy of the physical form. Please, turn it in BEFORE try outs begin! 4. Allow the AD to check your eligibility, and ensure that you are eligible. 5. Meet with the coach at the specified time on the first day of try outs. Eligibility: A student athlete must meet the following criteria prior to participating in any athletic activity: Must meet all eligibility requirements prior to the first try out/practice date. Must have a completed & signed Middle School Athletic Participation Form prior to the first try out/practice date. Must not participate if he/she becomes 15 on or before Aug 31, 2018 Must receive a medical examination once every 395 days by a licensed medical physician, physician s assistant, or family practitioner in USA. Parent or legal custodian must read the Concussion Information Sheet, initial and sign the Student-Athlete & Parent/Legal Custodian Concussion Statement once each school year. Must meet promotion requirements to be eligible for the Fall semester. Must earn passing grades (D or better) in a minimum of three core courses each semester to be eligible for participation during the succeeding semester. Total absences cannot excess 14 the previous semester. Must not participate (practice or play) if ineligible. Must not participate (practice or play) in any athletic event if suspended or is actively serving in the in-school suspension program that day. Must be present in school the entire day in order to participate in practices or games. Must live with a parent or legal custodian within the Wake County Public School System administrative unit. (Must notify AD if not living with a parent or legal custodian. A player must practice a total of 6 days before playing in a game in all sports except football, where a player must practice 9 days. A player injured requiring medical attention and/or absent due to illness must meet eligibility requirements. Player will need to present a doctor s note to return to play. 5 PAGE 5 DRMS Year Round School Athletic Expectations Drop off is after school and no student can come early without the coach and athletic director s prior permission. Do not use Bus Parking Lot before 2:50 p.m. Activity bus will be provided for students Drop off locations; {North Bus} Millbrook High School, West Millbrook Middle, and Union Elementary School {South Bus} Green Road Community Center, Heddingham Golf Club, and Powell Elementary. Students must make arrangements during track out to be at practices/games. Missed time due to vacation - it must be approved by coach prior to try outs, if known in advance. Typically, one week of vacation time is allowed during the season. Missed time during tryouts is strongly discouraged. Each coach will submit to team members a set of rules that will reflect Wake County Guidelines. Coaches can expect higher standards based on their team rules and expectations. Examples might include greater demands on grades in season, behavior at school or other requirements by the coach. The try out and selection process for middle school teams is at times difficult and stressful. Students need to take rules, expectations & commitment seriously before trying out. Pick up time for athletes needs to be within 15 minutes of specified time. Extended lateness can lead to the athlete facing disciplinary actions by the coach. A parent must secure permission from the coach to take your child home after an away event. Athletes need to report to their assigned team area based on the coach s instruction after school. A WCPSS Middle School Athletic Participation Form must be turned into the coach before a student can try out for a sport. Also, be sure to keep a copy of this form for future needs. If an athlete s grades drop in season either by interim or quarterly reports, the athletic department retains the right to put the student on an academic contract in order to stay eligible for the team. If a player/parent has a concern, it is recommended that this be discussed with the coach at an appropriate time. If there is still a concern, the athletic director should then be consulted followed by the school principal. Playing time is a decision of the coach and only the player should talk to the coach about what he/she can do to get more playing time. Tracked out students cannot come to school early unless a specific teacher has agreed to supervise that student. This MUST be approved prior to that day or the student will be sent home. Sportsmanship Sportsmanship is defined as the quality of responsible behavior characterized by a spirit of generosity and genuine concern for opponents, officials and teammates. Athletes, students, and parents should: Realize you represent the school as does a member of the team; therefore, you have an obligation to be a true sportsman, encourage through this behavior the practice of good sportsmanship by others. Recognize that good sportsmanship is more important than victory by approving and applauding good team play, individual skill, and outstanding examples of sportsmanship and fair play exhibited by either team. Remember that the purpose of interscholastic athletics is to promote physical, mental, moral, social, and emotional well-being of the players through the medium of contest. Be modest in victory and gracious in defeat, respect the judgment and integrity of game officials.

6 PAGE 6 Contest Specifics Football: Pre-Game (5 th Quarter) is 10 minutes (5 on Offense, 5 on Defense), 8 Minute Quarters. Overtime (OT) Each team has one offensive series from the 10 yard-line. Volleyball: Best 3 out of 5 games wins, games are played to 25 points using rally scoring. A ball hitting the line is IN. 5 th game is to 15, win by 2. Soccer: Pre-Game (5 th Quarter) is 5 minutes running time, two 30 minute halves are played. If tied, a 10 minute overtime period is played in two halves of 5 minutes each. Basketball: Pre-Game (5 th Quarter) is 6 minutes long, running time. Quarters are 6 minutes long. Order of events: Girls 5 th Quarter, Girls Game, Boys 5 th Quarter, Boys Game (Unless a school specifies a change prior to the date that the game is to be played). Softball: Fast pitch. Home plate to pitcher s rubber = 40. Bases are 60 apart. Sliding, stealing, and bunting are legal. Games conclude after 1 hour and 30 minutes. Track: Dual Meet Scoring: 5-3-1, (relay 5-0), 1 false start per event. Each athlete can compete in a maximum of 3 events.
