The word Foodball, when heard by people in other places besides Grays Harbor, might think you have a lisp or an odd typo. But in Grays Harbor it means way more than that. It means food for many families who wouldn t make it through the winter without it; it means two schools using a hundred year rivalry to give back to their community. Foodball was created some thirty years ago, 1981 to be exact, by Jill Bellis. This lady is the one that all credit is handed to for organizing and coming up with this brilliant idea. This event literally saved the food banks of Grays Harbor. Throughout these thirty years many things have changed. Kids, staff, and parents have come up with many new ways to raise more and more money every year. They use many things like takeovers, where the school takes over a local business on a certain day for a scheduled amount of hours to receive a percentage of the profit. Other things like auctions, dinners, t-shirts, and hot cocoas are also used as a way to make profit and put money towards Foodball and to hopefully beat Aberdeen. Although students and even adults love the idea of yeah, we beat Aberdeen!. Foodball means and does so much more for those people who could care less about the rivalry, and are just grateful they have a generous community to live in and be a part of. The food banks of both Aberdeen and Hoquiam depend on us to supply them with most of their food and money for the year. This year the high schools were able to raise 894, pounds of food! Hoquiam came on top though with over 200,000 more pounds raised than Aberdeen! The senior chairs Chandra Munger, Nick Lindseth, and Emily Gwinn all made this possible for Hoquiam to say this is our fifth consecutive foodball win. Also, a big thanks to Mrs. Jump and her lovely leadership class for putting together and running the whole thing! Pg. 1

Sports The long tradition of the rivalry game between Hoquiam and Aberdeen marked 109 years this past Halloween. Although it has never been on Halloween before, this Myrtle Street rivalry was played on Turkey Day all the way until Aberdeen, which has always been a bigger school and town than Hoquiam is ahead by almost double the victories over Hoquiam. Hoquiam comes out and fights hard every game regardless of past standings. This is a huge game for everyone. Not only does this game matter to the athletes, it matters to many more people as well. It s a pride thing. It s a we beat Aberdeen thing. This game is loved and watched by old Alumni who had once played in the same gamewhen they were in high school. It s watched and supported by local businesses that have donated money to the school of their choosing to fund the events and gear and other necessities to play the sport. It s watched by parents who love more than anything seeing their kids out there on the field either cheering each other on or taking part in the action. It s watched by neighbors who have watched the students grow up and have bought candles, gold cards, and chocolate bars countless times to help with fundraising. This matters and is a big deal to a lot of people! Hometown pride is a huge deal when it comes to little communities. Also, to add to all the hype that goes on each year for this game, the two teams have extra motivation. The United States Marines Corps has created a Rivalry Series to celebrate the long standing rivalry. They rank this rivalry of the top 100 must-see games in the whole U.S. It is also the longest battle between two schools in the state of Washington! Along with celebrating the win Rivalry Game Mikayla Evans of the game they add an extra competition for students of the schools to participate in while at the game. Students come down fill out a little form and participate in a chin up challenge, or for those that cannot physically do chin ups and want to help out their team are asked to hold their chin above the bar for as long as they can, every seven seconds counts as one pull up. At the end of the third quarter they count all the chin ups and see who wins. It s a way everyone gets to participate. This year, on Halloween night, the town of Hoquiam is proud to say We smashed those cats with a win of The Grizzlies took home not only one but both trophies this year. This was a great recovery from last year s 36-2 loss. Hoquiam was down three starting players for different reasons, but still made sure the Bobcats didn t come close to stealing their title. They were tough all game long and worked very hard for the outcome of this game. The student section, parents, coaches, family, and friends were very happy and proud of their boys who gave them the 39th win of the long rivalry. Pg. 2

Spotlight This month, the student spotlight is on Trent Lightner. He is a sophomore this year and transferred from Elma. Trent said that HHS is cool, and better than Elma. His favorite class is weight training and likes to play football and wrestle. In his free time, Trent likes to read or watch his favorite football teams: the Denver Broncos and the Oakland Raiders. Trent s plans after high school are to either join the Navy or go to Notre Dame, and become a college football player. His favorite kind of music varies, if he is working out, he likes to listen to rap. If he s at home, he listens to rock. He also likes to collect football cards and his role model is Tim Tebow. One of the greatest events for Trent was when he threw a 30 yard touchdown pass for the Elma football team. Blue is the color that represents Trent the best because he likes the color and it fits him the best. When asked, Trent said that his favorite holiday is Thanksgiving because he can eat as much food as he can. This Marvel fan s favorite superheros are Ironman and Thor, and his favorite super villain is Victor, Wolverine s brother. Trent s favorite candy is Butterfingers and he like Monster Energy drinks. He wasn t sure if he had a greatest strength, but Trent says that his ego is definitely one of his greatest weaknesses. Student Spotlight Madisen Davis Pg. 3

Debate Point: Madison West Black Friday is the Friday following Thanksgiving. In recent years, stores having been opening up really early offering sales to kick off the holiday season. Black Friday has been the busiest shopping day since A lot of people think we shouldn t have a Black Friday because some stores start sales on Thanksgiving. There are a lot of other reasons why people don t want to have a Black Friday that was just one of them. But I on the other hand think we should have a Black Friday. These sales only happen once a year. Black Friday began in 1961 and is still going to this day. People don t want Black Friday because they say it interferes with Thanksgiving. Personally, I feel that if we are done eating and spending time with our family, Thanksgiving is over. After you are done eating all that food at dinner or lunch you can take a nap and then burn off all that food you ate by racing for those sales when the doors open at store. It s not like Black Friday starts on Thanksgiving while all the families are eating. It starts late at night from at least ten at night to six in the morning. A lot of people think it s wrong to go shopping late at night the day after Thanksgiving. I don t think it s wrong at all. I celebrated Thanksgiving earlier in the day and gave all my thanks. I think it s a good idea to go shopping because you can get early Christmas presents for your family or friends, even things for yourself. The prices on some things are ridiculously low and it s great because you can t get them at that low of a price after Black Friday so why not go and enjoy the low prices? Black Friday Shopping Some people say Black Friday turns people into monsters or it s horrible to watch all the people fight over items on sale. I think it s hilarious! It s great entertainment. People go crazy over sales and I just laugh. It s seriously is the best entertainment while you re shopping. I think Black Friday is just a good idea. Great sales, staying out late to shop, and good entertainment. I hope to see all of you shopping on Black Friday! Pg. 4

Debate The Friday after Thanksgiving is known as Black Friday which supposedly marks the beginning of shopping for the holiday season. At some point in the 1970 s the day got the name Black Friday. Ridiculous traffic and chaos in every store may have been reason of the name, but others believe it is because it is the busiest shopping day of the year and retailers gain much more money than usual, putting them in the black. Crazy low prices and staying up all night to be pushed around to buy a new pair of boots the day after most people spend doing Thanksgiving activities is ridiculous. Black Friday begins in some stores the night of Thanksgiving as early as 6 o clock. Some sales in other businesses do not begin until midnight and some at five am. With doors opening, stores are typically covered in bright holiday decorations with festive music playing on the loudspeakers. People rush in for hours on end, jamming each other out of the way to ensure they get everything on their long lists of holiday gifts. Without a doubt it is the most dangerous way to go shopping. Blasted with noise and pandemonium, shoppers have a hard time facing all sorts of challenges. A large amount of injuries occur on Black Friday from people being in such a violent rush to get their items they knock people over without a second thought. Shoppers get in cruel arguments about technology deals, and people get out of control. Black Friday Shopping Counter Point: Sarah Davy Black Friday shopping is completely unnecessary and it is not smart to attend shopping malls on that day. Spending the day off from school, and most people from work, with my friends and family sounds a lot more enjoyable than hectic shopping to me. Thanksgiving is a day to be thankful for everything, not to spend all evening attempting to get holiday gifts in the safest way possible. If you are planning to attend the sales of Black Friday, luck and safety is wished upon you. Pg. 5

Holidays History of Thanksgiving Jeff Capoeman There is a lot of history behind Thanksgiving that you might know of. For instance, did you know that Thanksgiving is tied into the Disney movie Pocahontas? Yes, there really were people named Pocahontas and John Smith (two main characters in the movie), who had connections with Squanto, an Indian man who helped the pilgrims. Squanto had also been a slave in England. He was lured onto a boat by Thomas Hunt along with many other tribesmen from two different tribes. Thomas had lured these men onto the boat, convincing them that he wanted to make a beaver trade, tricking them and taking all of them into slavery. If you can remember, Thomas Hunt was the evil and wicked man on Pocahontas who was heavy set and had a weird looking mustache. He also had an ugly little pug. While being enslaved, Squanto had learned how to speak proper English. He had returned home many years later and would play a very important role with the Pilgrims and Thanksgiving. How he had been set free is unclear, along with many other small details involved with Thanksgiving. The reason being of his importance is, he was the main person who had helped the pilgrims of the Mayflower. He, along with a few other people form the Wampanoag Tribe, had showed the pilgrims how to survive on the land. They had showed the pilgrims how to grow crops such as corn and how to fish in the river. The pilgrims had been very successful in their first harvest in To show their appreciation the pilgrims had thrown a big feast and invited the Wampanoag Tribe to join them in their feast. This, in America, is widely known to be the very first Thanksgiving feast. There is much controversy on where the first actual Thanksgiving feast was held. The states of Florida, Texas, Maine, Massachusetts and Virginia each claim to have had the first Thanksgiving feast within their states and hold historical documents to show so. Feasts of giving thanks were also held with many religious groups after having a successful year of harvesting or just at random times to give thanks. Christians in Britain had done this for many years before the pilgrims entered the new world. Native Americans had done this at every one of the feasts they held. Every feast had specific thanks to give and they celebrated very often. There is a dark side to Thanksgiving with the pilgrims. Although the Wampanoag s had signed a treaty with the pilgrims with the help of Squanto, the Pecquot Indian Nation had not agreed to this peace treaty and had attacked. Outnumbered with the alliance of the Wampanoag and the pilgrims, the Pecquot tribe suffered greatly with many massacres and attacks that went on for many years. Thanksgiving Facts: President Abraham Lincoln had made Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863 in desperate hopes to reunite the nation during the Civil War. People had stopped commonly celebrating Thanksgiving in 1815 but it slowly again grew popular towards the Civil War. The first national Thanksgiving was held in 1777, proclaimed by the National Congress. U.S. Congress had made the official day of Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November in Pg. 6

Recipe Thanksgiving is near and you re looking for a different food to add to your traditional turkey and stuffing. What could be any more perfect than fry bread for a change? To make fry bread you are going to need: 4-6 cups of flour 2 cups of warm water 1 package of quick rise yeast 1/2 cup of sugar 1/4 cup of oil 1/4 tablespoon of salt Thanksgiving Recipe Jeff Capoeman Just like any famous recipe you don t just need the ingredients, you need to know the steps in making the food. Procedure: 1)Put 4 cups of flour in a large bowl and set aside one cup of flour. 2)Put in 1/2 cup of sugar and a dash of salt into the 4 cups of flour. 3)Put 2 cups of warm water into a medium size bowl, then mix in yeast. 4)Wait 5 minutes for the yeast to dissolve. 5)Pour the water and yeast into the dry mix. 6)Stir it all up. 7)Mix in 1/4 cup of oil. 8)Pour in the last cup of flour. 9)Pour some oil on your hands then knead the dough for a few minutes. 10)Form into a large ball and place in a large bowl. 11)Put a towel or paper towels on the bowl and let rise for at least a half hour. 12)Put oil in a large skillet so the skillet is 3/4 full of oil. 13)Turn it on high and heat the oil to about 400 degrees. 14)Let it warm up for at least 10 minutes. 15)Put oil on your hands and pull pieces from the dough and form in the shape of round discs 1/4 inch thick and 6 inches round. 16)Place in the hot oil, turning with tongs when it is golden brown(about two minutes). 17)Place cooked fry bread in a bowl that is covered with paper towels to keep the bread fresh and warm for as long as possible. Fry bread can be mixed with a lot of things such as jam, butter, gravy or turkey. It serves just as good as any other bread but it tastes better. Fry bread will stay fresh for a few days and does not need to be refrigerated. You can have left overs the next day and have fry bread turkey sandwiches! This recipe will guarantee you a satisfactional change in your Thanksgiving. Pg. 7

Entertainment DC Comics vs. Marvel Comics Nick Jones From comic books to movies, there are thousands of fictional superheroes out there. However, most of the more popular superheroes such as Superman, Batman, and Spiderman come from two different publishers, DC Comics and Marvel Comics. DC Comics and Marvel Comics have been around for years, making movies, comic books, and TV shows. DC Comics published classics such as, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Flash. Marvel Comics has published some well-known classic superheroes as well, such as Spiderman, Ironman, Hulk, and Deadpool. Both of these publishers are very well known. So naturally, fans debate on which publisher is better. But what about Hoquiam High School? Which do they prefer? A survey was handed out to 118 students to find out the answer. They were told to answer anonymously, and to only choose one. The results of the survey showed that DC Comics won with 56 votes! Marvel Comics was very close with 54 votes. Seven of the students were undecided. It was a very close count, but DC Comics was the favorite out of the 118 students surveyed. Pg. 9

Entertainment Movie Review Madison West A new movie that came out just recently is called Neighbors. This movie is a great movie. It s funny and it keeps you interested. It s about a couple that just had a baby and they found a nice neighborhood and a lovely house to raise their newborn. The house next door to them is for sale. About a week later someone moves in. It turns out to be a fraternity. The couple then attempts to go and talk to the fraternity boys to make sure that that they keep things down because they just had a baby. Everyone pretty much knows that asking a fraternity to be quiet is going to end up bad. Ever since that things have been crazy between the two neighbors. Pranks and so much more. Neighbors proves that just because people grow up doesn t mean that everybody has to growup. People can still be wild and crazy even as they re yelling at the kids next door to get off the lawn. But this can t give away too much of the movie. Watch this movie you will love it and laugh while you re watching it! Drama Sarah Davy Many kids are involved in a class held sixth period known as Drama class. During the first few weeks of the year they work on basics of drama and how to act well. After that they are assigned their first monologue. A monologue is a solo speech created by the student and then performed. Shortly after their first monologue performance, they are assigned a dramatic monologue they must memorize and preform. Next, a Shakespearean monologue is assigned and performed. The drama class also works on skits of all kinds that they performed during conference week. Ashley Dugger, a student who is in drama class says that it is a great experience because everyone starts out as basically strangers in the beginning of the semester and as the time progresses on everyone grows together. She says all the students grow a special and unforgettable bond with the teacher, Mrs. Sundstrom, as well. She also states that at the end of their time together everyone is practically one big family of friends and that it is a very emotional and sad ending to the semester for every student. Pg. 10
