District Trainers: Hello Fellow Goldwingers Last month I wrote about the mild weather we were enjoying. Well I guess Old Man Winter was listening and decided to give us a break this year as predicted by our li le furry buddy Punxsutawney Phil all the way back in February. The calendar says Spring started yesterday and the temperature reached the 50 s, I ll take that in March any me!!! All we need now is a Spring shower or two that will wash away all the lingering traces of Old Man Winter s le over cinders, and calcium from the roads. With Spring and the beginning of the riding season, several things come to mind. Are the bikes ready, and even more important, are we ready for a new riding season? It s not that hard to determine if the bike is ready. Think T-CLOCK, but what do we need to check to see if WE are ready for another riding season? Remember our riding skills will be a li le rusty for the first few rides and let s face it, most of us don t ride like professional road racers even a er the rust is gone. So, start out slow and easy with a few shorter rides un l some of the rust wears off. Before that first ride, let s check our riding gear? How old is your helmet (remember, it has a suggested replace-by-date) and is it in good condi on? Is the face shield scuffed or cloudy? What about your rain gear? Are your gloves in good shape? What condi on is your riding jacket in, and the big ques- on, Does it s ll fit??? If it s me to replace your jacket you may want to consider one of the new all-weather armored hitech jackets with an air flow ven la on system, they are quite comfortable in most weather condi ons and best of all, they add a li le extra safety. The new super bright colors have become more popular the last few years because they also help us to be seen. As well as ge ng Us and the Bike ready for the new season there is some Training that we should talk about. As everyone knows, the Pa Rally will be in May again this year and there are only a few FUN filled weeks before we meet in York. That means it s me to work on the Rally Training Schedule, and we could really use some Help!!! If there are any topics that you would like to see offered, please let us know and we will make every effort to provide them. To see the complete list of available Training to choose from, visit the Pa District Website home page and click on the Training Bu on. There are many new Modules and several newly revised Seminars to choose from. We ve been looking them over to see what might be of interest this year. That means we will have lots of Training Opportuni es available at the Rally. With the support of our great GW University Instructors and Trainers we ll do our best to provide the training that you Our Members are most interested in a ending. Please take advantage of the Training that best fits your needs, hopefully there will be something for everyone! What could be be er than spending some me with our GWRRA Family of Friends learning more about riding and our organiza on. What a great way to start the year!!! Please, Promote and Support the Rally Training Opportuni es throughout your Chapters. With the support of the GW University Instructors and Trainers, we ll do our best to make the training Available, Informa ve and FUN!!! We look forward to seeing you at a future Training event. 6 FROM YOUR PA DISTRICT EDUCATOR Hi Everyone: The Riding Season is closing in on us with most of you taking your first ride of the season star ng in May. The following are just plain old common sense, but when common sense is in short supply, the numbers change on the sta s cs page. BACK OFF DUDE: Space is the best protec on you have between yourself and the people who are not you. Keep your distance from others, so you have more me to react and more space to adjust when someone else does something stupid. TO SOME PEOPLE A YELLOW LIGHT MEANS GO FASTER: Many crashes happen at intersec ons. Cars that turn le in front of you and cars on the side streets that pull into your lane are the biggest dangers. Always be looking for poten al hazards, and an cipa ng how you will react. If a car can cross your path, assume that it will. That old saying about assump ons? It doesn t apply here. WHAT ARE YOU A PSYCHIC OR SOMETHING? It s pre y-simple if you have the right skills you can react a lot quicker and help avoid crashes. Studies show that most riders involved in crashes either under brake the front re and over brake the rear, or do not separate braking from swerving or choose swerving when it s not appropriate. Knowing when and how to stop or swerve are cri cal skills to keep your bu off the ground. IF ONLY EVERY LINE WAS STRAIGHT, BUT WHAT FUN WOULD THAT BE? A common cause of singlevehicle crashes is riders running wide in a curve or turn and colliding with the roadway or fixed object. Be alert to whether a curve remains constant, gradually widens, gets ghter, or involves mul ple turns. 6
BEING AFRAID OF A LITTLE PIECE OF RUBBER DOES NOT MAKE YOU LESS MANLY. Potholes, wet or icy surfaces, railroad tracks and re scraps all increase your chances of going down. Avoid obstacles by slowing down or going around them duh, right? On slippery roads, reduce your speed, use both brakes and try to keep your bike as upright as possible. When crossing railroad tracks, it s safer to stay in your lane rather than try to turn to cross at a 90-degree angle. For track and road seams that run parallel to your route, cross at a 90-degree angle. For track and road seams that run parallel to your route, cross at an angle of at least 45-degrees to avoid catching your res. TURN MAN: Traffic lights don t hate you. It s just that some of them don t turn green un l they receive a signal from a metal detector buried in the pavement. But, some mes bikes don t have enough metal to make them work. Seriously, just try to locate a detector usually a square or octagonal pa ern of thin lines in the pavement and ride along it. IF THEY CAN T SEE YOU, YOU DON T EXIST: Many crashes happen when the driver of a car doesn t see you. No surprise there. So, help yourself by wearing the proper clothing, using your headlight and riding in the best lane posi on. And, before making a move, always let people know what you re doing by using the correct signals. Evelyn and I would like to wish everyone a Happy Easter on April 21 st. Ride Safe & Ride Proud Chuck & Evelyn Stone PA DISTRICT EDUCATORS 7
DISTRICT COY COORDINATORS: I read something recently which I found to be very interes ng. On Presidents Day we may think of cherry trees and log cabins. While George Washington may be the only president who, according to legend, chopped down a cherry tree, Abraham Lincoln is not the only president who was born in a log cabin. As a ma er of fact, it is believed that at least seven of our na on s leaders took their first breaths in such rus c surrounds. President Lincoln is joined in the log cabin club by Presidents Andrew Jackson, Zachary Taylor, Millard Fillmore, Ulysses Grant, James Garfield, and Pennsylvania s very own James Buchanan. Greatness o en comes from humble beginnings! Our Chapter Couples o en comes from humble beginnings as well. That is why it is very important to support our Chapter Couples. They have done some wonderful things for the Chapters and that is why we honor them. Let s show our support as many move forward to District Couple. March 30 th was the Couple of the Year FUN Day in Clearfield. What a memorable day it was. We not only honored each Chapter Couple but also prepared them for the next step in their journey. We had a me of fellowship, games, ge ng to know each other and so much more while learning about the Selec on Process. Thank you all for coming out and suppor ng the Couple of the Year Program! PA District Rally in York May 16, 17, 18 is around the corner. There will be seminars, rider educa on, vendors and more! Don t miss out of the FUN. Get your registra on in, reserva ons made, sign up for the riding courses offered, Talent Show and share in an evening of ICE CREAM (a staple for most Goldwingers) and sign up for seminars once you arrive. Friday a ernoon will be the PA District Couple of the Year Selec on. Come on out and cheer for the Couples in the Process. Be sure to check the District Website for more GWRRA events. Your GWRRA Family will be there! PA District Officers Conference is April 27 th in Clearfield. See you soon in our travels. John & Glenda Leib PA District Couple of the Year Coordinators 8
DIST MEC COORDINATORS: As I sit here trying to think of something very enlightening to say, I realize that today is the first day of Spring. Even though the weather man is saying we might have some light snow in the next day or two, Spring is really here. Can riding be far behind? No, sir! As I came to work today I saw a street sweeper out ge ng rid of the signs that Winter was here. If you are able to get out soon on the bike, remember, not all roads and streets have been cleared of the cinders and other materials from the winter treatments. Remember to take it easy out there. As you move around either by vehicle or motorcycle, remember to keep an eye out for a new member. As we all know, we have a special group with GWRRA. Show your pride and put yourself out there to welcome new members. If your Chapter has new members or maybe even ones that have been around but you don t really know them, make it a point to say Hello and take a minute to speak to them. This is a friend for life and you will be so glad you took the me. By the me you read this, COY Fun Day will have taken place. A very informa ve program has been put together to show these couples what a great me they are in for. John and Glenda Lieb have really put a lot of me and effort into this event. I am really looking forward to mee ng the Couple s of the Year for each Chapter. Again, just friends wai ng to be. Un l next month. Pat Delo PA District MEC PA Chapter I MEC 9
District Couple of Year I was reading the Biker Blog and came across an interes ng discussion. WHAT TO DO IF A DOG CHASES YOUR MOTORCYCLE Whether you've personally had an encounter or dread the possibility, its important to know what to do if a dog chases your motorcycle. The Motorcycle Safety Founda on (MSF) offers the following sugges- ons: Once an approaching dog is spo ed, a good rider response is to slow down, including downshi, then accelerate past the point of intercep on. Don't kick the dog because it will make controlling the motorcycle difficult. Dogs aren't the only animal to look out for on the road. Those that don't chase may simply wander into your path. Here are a few general rules. *SLOW DOWN WELL BEFORE YOU REACH THE ANIMAL *DO NOT-REPEAT-D0 NOT KICK AT THE ANIMAL *IF THE ANIMAL MIGHT INTERCEPT YOU, SLOW DOWN AND THEN SPEED UP BEFORE THE INTERCEP- TION POINT. IT WILL THROW THE ANIMAL'S TIMING OFF *IF A DEER JUMPS OUT FAR ENOUGH AHEAD NOT TO BE A WORRY, WATCH OUT FOR ITS MATE, THEY TEND TO TRAVEL IN PAIRS 10
