We got my bike out 2 weeks ago and went to Warren ate at Bob Evans little bit chilly but it was a nice ride. We are leaving March 28th to go to Florida and I am taking the bike with us but of course on the trailer LOL. Rita, Harold and Diane are leaving March 25th to come home. Pat is getting the new ride schedule for 2018 together. Anybody have any rides they like to go on please get ahold of me or Pat and we will get them on their. We had 5 people that went to chapter N for some seminars on March 3rd we had a very good time. I heard some members went to classes, that is great. If there still are some more that you would like we can see about getting some scheduled. Mention your ideas at the March meeting if you can. 2 PA ASSISTANT DISTRICT DIRECTOR: As I look out the back window of our house, I see blue sky and it looks nice enough to pull the motorcycle out and go for that first ride of the year. Then, my eyes drop down to the thermometer on the handrail and it shows 20 degrees. Now keep in mind I m a rider who has recorded rides at 4 degrees above zero and loved it! But, that was a few years back and I m not sure if as I get older I m getting smarter and just choose not to ride anymore in those frigid temperatures, or maybe it s just that I m getting older and cold weather and I hate each other. I also used to laugh on February 2 when Punxsutawney Phil would see his shadow. But now I just wish someone would just make groundhog stew out of him and get ME out of my misery. I mean, how can one little furry rodent give me so much misery and anguish? Now don t get me wrong, I love animals of all types, but this little guy is pushing his luck with me as I get older. I am getting cabin fever and all I want to do is go for a nice ride. Is that too much for a motorcycle rider to ask for? I see that there is going to be a few Days of Learning in the District coming up in the near future and I tell myself, o.k., I ll get my mind ready while I m waiting for the weather to break. Getting myself mentally ready for the ride is very important and will make the Spring riding season be much safer for me. I m also looking forward to seeing all of you when the riding season gets into full swing. My prayer is that we as a District and a family of friends will not have any problems on the roads as we travel this beautiful country enjoying the ride, but more importantly, nurturing the friendships we have made. Let s all remember that it s nice to ride around and look at the roses, but we should always be willing to stop and smell them also. That is when conversations can happen with fellow riders, but also with non-riders too who just want to learn more about what and why we do what we do. 3 Hello Everyone! Let s talk about the GWRRA s Rider Education Program. There s a lot of information to share, so we are going to break the conversation into two parts. This month, we ll cover the purpose of the program as well as Level I and Level II. In April, we ll chat about moving up to Level III and Level IV of the REP. The following information is taken from the GWRRA website. The GWRRA Rider Education Program (REP) is intended to make the motorcycle environment safer by reducing injuries and fatalities and increasing motorcyclist skills and awareness. The REP does not propose to have all the answers. However, our close working relationship with the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF), as well as additional GWRRA programs and studies, has provided a wealth of information for use in establishing a comprehensive Rider Education Program. Through Commitment, Education and Application, we can reduce our accident rate significantly. Listed below are several benefits of a fully implemented GWRRA Rider Education Program at the Chapter level:: Increased rider knowledge, Increased rider safety skills. Prevention of accidents. Reduced injuries, Reduced fatalities, Improved general public image of motorcyclists, Enhanced enjoyment of motorcycle riding The motorcycle community is already realizing many positive benefits from the GWRRA Rider Education Program. Through the efforts of the Rider Education Officers and participation of the membership and others, we will reach our goal of establishing the safest motorcycle environment possible. Level I: Safety by Commitment - The first big step to success Level I of the Rider Education Program is also referred to as Safe Miles. It represents the commitment of the Rider and/or the Co- Rider to practice safe motorcycle operation whenever they operate their motorcycle. Safety is a state of mind which can only be attained through total commitment. Every successful accomplishment begins with a commitment to reach the intended objective. This is true of the Rider Education Program and includes a promise to learn for the sake of Rider, Co-Rider, friends and family, and others on the road. Though there is no mileage requirement to enter Level I, the commitment to safe riding is tracked by the number of accident free miles since joining GWRRA. Accident free miles are accumulated in 5,000 mile increments and may be updated at yearly intervals. Requirement: Verbal commitment to ride safely at all times. No cost to sign up. Patches available at $6.00 per participant. Receive: "Safe Miles" patch, Rider (or Corider) Rocker, and mileage pin. Level II: Safety by Education Level II of the REP is also referred to as Tour Rider. It represents the commitment of the Rider and/or Co-Rider to be safer motorcycle riders by taking approved motorcycle riding courses at regular intervals. GWRRA has chosen several educational training programs for the Riders and Co- Riders such as the MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) programs, the United Sidecar Association course, the CSC (Canadian Safety Council) programs, and the GWRRA's Advanced Riding courses. Completing these courses provides the foundation and skills for your quest to be a safe motorcycle rider. All recognized programs are taught by qualified and nationally-certified instructors. For the Co-Rider, we have provided an excellent seminar and "Two Up" programs to assist in their role in the safety aspect of motorcycle riding. Doug Motter PA District Educator Continued on page 7

4 Attention Chapter Directors: "GoldWingers Got Talent" "GoldWingers Got Talent" is the Theme for the talent show at the 2018 PA District Rally this May in Uniontown, PA. It will be part of the Friday night festivities on May 18th. We are excited to be the "Hosts" for this year's show and we are looking forward to helping showcase your special talents. As we learned years ago "Everybody's got a talent"! The act can be one person or multiple people or your whole chapter. The more the merrier!!! As in the past few years this is a non-competitive event which gives everyone the ability to sing, dance, tell jokes, do a skit, play an instrument, or some other special talent. Stupid People Tricks maybe? Rules are simple. Family Oriented, Non-Political, Non-Religious. That is it! A sound system is available if you need music and/or a microphone. There is a small stage that is 8 feet deep by 16 feet long about 24 inches off the floor with one step to get on and off. This is a great opportunity to get your chapter involved in something that is just for fun. Use the rest of this winter to get together and make your chapter a part of the rally. Every chapter that has someone taking part in the show will be entered to win a Dairy Queen gift card to be drawn at the end of the show. The gift card will be awarded to the Chapter. So put on your "thinking caps" and plan what you have to offer to entertain your fellow Gold- Wingers. Let's all work together to make this year's show a true extravaganza. 9 FROM DISTRICT DIRECTOR: Wow is it February, time to write a newsletter. Time sure does fly when you are having FUN! We know it has only been a month since we became Pennsylvania District Directors. We appreciate the time that everyone puts it to getting yearend paper work done and selling District Raffle tickets while trying to get ready for Christmas and the New Year. This month is the drawing for the District Raffle tickets. We hope you have a winning ticket! A list of winners will be announced weekly through PEDS. At our District Team Meeting, the team decided that the month of February was a good time for the drawing. It gives everyone something to look forward to during the winter. So, this coming year, District Raffle tickets will be distributed to the Chapters to sell. Thanks for all your help in selling the tickets! There are many events planned by the District and Chapters for Take time to look at the District website for the flyers. The first page of the District Newsletter has the events that have been posted to the District website events page. To highlight some of the District Events that are quickly approaching. March 10 th Couple of the Year (COY) Retreat This is a great time to meet couples from other chapters that have been selected to represent their Chapter. You will learn about the honor and what is expected of you. April14 th Officer Conference in Clearfield, PA The purpose of the day is to learn about the office you are holding and the responsibilities of your office along with any changes that home office has implemented. The meeting is open to Chapter Directors, Assistant Chapter Directors, Ride Coordinators, Membership Enhancement Coordinators and Treasurers. Please let us know how many will be attending from your Chapter by March 31, May th PA District Rally in Uniontown, PA Please send in your registration and make your hotel reservation. At the rally, we have scheduled riding courses. The only course that has spots left open is the ARC (Advance Riding Course) for two-wheeled motorcycles. There will be non-riding education classes held on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. All Chapters East & All Chapters West Both campgrounds are taking reservations for the event. And don t forget to send your registration in to the host chapter. Both these events are FUN so, plan on attending even if you do not camp! We have been receiving phone calls about planning a Day of Training at your chapter or a couple of chapters going together. Now is a great time to have a non-riding day of training.
