3 FROM JIM AND PATTI BURR CHAPTER DIRECTORS Greeting everyone Well the heat has not relented and either we have 90 Plus weather or it rains. Mother Nature at her best. Well Wing Ding was a success and the 32-chapter members who attended had a great time, some more than others. We will be having a dedicated section in the October Newsletter. My intent is for everyone to take some time and reflect on their trip and write an article. We all did some amazing things and some great rides. September is going to be a slow month for the chapter. Not a lot going on and we have some open weekends for rides. If there is a ride you would like to do or see happen, please let our ride coordinators know. Team meeting on the September 13 th at Pat and Rob s. Team members please plan to attend if you can. We will be having a Halloween party at Pat and Rob in October. Date and more information in this newsletter. Remember to start thinking of next year s happenings and rides. With All Chapters East out of the way we should be able to do a lot more rides and things. October s Gathering will be the planning day. Please make a note of it on your calendar. Begin the process and write your ideas down so when you come you have them ready to share with the chapter. It s all about having more fun next year. Patti and I went to Ice cream tonight at September Farms. While there we noticed a couple who keep looking at us. He was wearing a trike shirt and rides a Goldwing. Patti and I introduced ourselves and we had a great conversation. What attracted them to us was the shirts our members were wearing and the fun we were having. We gave them our Web site, exchanged names and invited them to our September Gathering. As John has stated to all of us, if we wear our colors you never know who you will meet along the road.

4 Chapter Directors con t Also, we met MJ Fisher. She is a member with her husband Larry who could not attend tonight. We welcomed her, and she stated they both attended Wing Ding in Knoxville and were actively looking for us. Although she never found us they did have a good time there. She hopes to join us for a gathering or ride soon. Welcome again MJ and Larry Fisher. Glad were able to finally meet That s it for now Be safe Jim & Patti FROM RON AND SANDY SPENCE ASSISTANT CHAPTER DIRECTORS Acquaintances we have that grow to friends, and in my case mainly because of a motorcycle. I had a very interesting week at Wing Ding. Chapter life took many of us from all walks of life to Knoxville, because of a motorcycle. I met a young couple from Minnesota trying to hook up with others for a joint trip back home, because of a motorcycle. I have many Facebook friends of which I met two, one from Alabama and the other from Tennessee, because of a motorcycle. So GWRRA can be many things to many people, but always friends for fun safety and knowledge, because of a motorcycle.

5 FROM JOHN PARKER M.E.C. September Fall Riding Season After writing my August Article, our Chapter Ice Cream night at Jim Mack s on July 31 st was an interesting evening. We had a long time Chapter B member there, Ed Reigart also a life member of GWRRA and one of our newest members Ed Austin. It was great to see both of them. On September 1 st, we had 5 Chapter B members doing Flag Maintenance at Indiantown National Gap Cemetery, Mike and John Yavor, John and Faye Oberholser and John Parker. As I write this article we have a large group of Chapter B members attending the 40 th Annual Wing Ding in Knoxville. I rode down the Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway with Rob Simmons and John Oberholser. We met up with Jim and Becky Duff along with Pat Simmons in Wytheville, VA. After a night in Wytheville, John Oberholser and myself headed back to Lancaster and the others went on to Wing Ding If you know a motorcyclist, any brand, invite them to a gathering, a chapter function or a chapter ride. That is the only way they can get a good look at us. We welcome all riders/co-riders to come enjoy our events. We promise a good time. In September, besides our Tuesdays for ice cream, we will again be doing Flag Maintenance at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery on September 1st, there is a Chapter B Spaghetti Dinner at the Simmon s home on September 8th, a dinner ride on September 15 th, we will be visiting Chapter A on September 16 th, our chapter gathering on September 22nd and an after gathering ride to Rock Hall MD. Check the Chapter B website for details. Our Roll for Dough participation cruising along, we have enough points for free chapter dues, after Wing Ding we will have 26 points. Although it is not a competition, we are in first place and well ahead of 2 nd place (Chapter T will have 19 points). We only need five members attending to get the point but we are getting more folks enjoying the fun of visiting other chapters and other districts, that is great, the more the merrier, keep up the good work. Again, I would like to thank everyone for wearing their colors more frequently; I have been to several functions where the increase is noticeable. Chapter Pride is important when we are out as a group. We want everyone to know who we are, so that they can appreciate our safe riding and good behavior. Finally, I wish each of you a continued healthy, happy and safe riding season, attend as many of our planned events for your Fun, Safety and Knowledge, as you can. 11 DISTRICT NEWS By Harold and Diane Jackson PA District Directors. Sometimes it is hard to write about next month when there are so many events happening at the end of the current month. So, lets start with what is happening in September then we will go back and talk about the end of August. The month starts off with the unofficial end of summer celebration Labor Day. But, we know it is not the end of riding season. Thank you for updating the PA District Events Schedule on our website. Please join in the FUN! We plan on seeing you on Saturday, September 8 th at 2 pm for Pies, Pies, Pies in Blairsville for the District ride-in to Dean s Diner. The pies are homemade and they make 25 different kinds daily. So, please plan on riding to Blairsville and join us for pie. No reservations necessary however, if you or your chapter plan on attending, please let us know. Then we can give the diner an idea as to how many will be participating. The PA District Raffle Tickets will be distributed this month. The program will be the same as last year. The tickets sell for $5.00 and are based on the Pennsylvania Lottery Pick 4 evening drawing held in February Let s get out and sell as many tickets as we can, this program supports many of the activities we have at the chapter and district level. The registration form for the PA District Rally Ride of the Roses, May 16-18, 2019 at the Wyndham Garden in York, PA will be distributed. Make sure you take time to review the registration and get it in early if you plan on attending any of the special events, many of them have limited space. Don t forget everyone is eligible for the $100 drawing if you are registered by February 28, Do you enjoy All Chapters West or All Chapters East? We are looking for two chapters; one to host All Chapters West and the other to host All Chapters East. Chapters that have hosted these events have had a great time and it is a nice fund raiser for the chapter. If your chapter would like more information or you have questions please feel free to contact me. Thank you to PA-I for hosting a Road Captain s Course. The sky was dark many times during the day but, when it was time to practice what was learnt in the classroom it was a beautiful day. Thank you to everyone that participated. Many of us will be coming home from Wing Ding, the National Rally was held in Knoxville, TN. Thank you PA District for the huge attendance at Wing Ding. Again, thank you to all the volunteers that helped with ticket sales! We hope everyone had a great time and had a safe ride to and from Wing Ding. School is back in session. 12 PA DISTRICT EDUCATOR CHUCK STONE Hi everyone: Now that fall is upon us, let s take a few minutes and talk about Motorcycle Safety and RIDING DURING THE FALL SEASON. Fall is finally here and the cooler days and reduced number of evening storms mean it is time to get the bike / trike out of the garage. Some people actually prefer to ride in cooler temperatures. Before you can ride, there are a lot of things to check, but let s focus on the two/three items that separate your bike from the pavement your tires. Your tires are the two/three most important things on your bike. If you think about it, your tires are the only thing keeping your bike from being a 1,000 pound paperweight. Check your tire pressure against the specified pounds-per-square-inch in your motorcycle owner s manual. Colder weather can cause your tire pressure to drop five psi. Even under ideal temperatures, your bike s tires will lose air pressure each month. Riding on underinflated tires will cause your fuel efficiency to be reduced, the tires to wear unevenly and most importantly, your bike to handle improperly. Take 30 seconds each morning before you ride and check your tire pressure. If you check your tires every day and they lose a pound every month and suddenly you lose five psi in one tire, you might have a serious issue like a nail in the tire, dry rot or even a bent wheel rim. If you don t check your tire pressure, you may be thumbing a ride or worse. It is important to check your tire pressure when your tires are cold. Tires are considered to be cold when you have ridden less than a mile or after your bike has been parked for three hours. If you are forced to check your tire pressure when hot, you will need to add four psi to the recommended pressure specified in your owner s manual. Be sure to recheck the tire pressure again when the bike has cooled down. What if you check the tires when they are hot and the pressure is too high? Don t worry about it. Normal riding will cause the tires to heat up and increase the tire pressure. When the tires cool down, you will probably find the tires are at the right cold air pressure. If your wheels have an inner tube which is leaking, the tube can rupture. When the tube has a catastrophic failure at even 45 mph, your riding skills will be put to the test.

13 CHUCK STONE cont If your tires consistently loose more than two psi per month, the tire, valve or wheel rim may be damaged. If this is the case put the bike in the bed of the truck and take it to a dealer to have it looked at. If your wheels have an inner tube which is leaking, the tube can rupture. When the tube has a catastrophic failure at even 45 mph, your riding skills will be put to the test. One last thought-valve caps. Yes, valve caps, those little 25 cent items keep the valve core clean and free of debris and help keep the pressure where it s wanted. Yes, your tires are critical to safe riding, but with minor care you can keep the air in the tires and your bike off the ground. Ride Safe & Ride Proud Chuck & Evelyn Stone PA District Educators
