2 From the Front Seat June's weather has been great, that is if you're a duck. It seems like all the s that go out have one statement in common. That statement is weather permitting. It's getting old. The dinner ride to Kline's was cancelled due to weather. But the movie night at the Sky view went off as planned. The weather man said it would be dry, so half way into the first movie when the lightning and thunder started showing its ugly head it was decided to go home. Everyone seemed like they had a good time until then, with safety being on each one's mind they headed home. Sonny and Carla put together a ride to Momma Mias on the 27th it was an impromptu ride so check the s when the weekends get closer. Thanks Sonny. I look forward to hearing how it went. On July the 4th, spend some time with the group and come to the birthday bash at John and Nancy. There is an out with all of the specifics with time and menus. Call or Jan Bartoloni with your side dish. The Ozark Hellbender is almost upon us. I hope you have already made you hotel arrangements. It looks like we will making more memories. Come and enjoy the weekend with W-2. Did you send in your money to save a spot on the trike course? It will be held on July 25th. See you on the 13th at Golden Corral for our meeting. 5 Who s Your Drag? Who is that person who always rides at the back of a group on a team ride? Some will say that they are the most important member of the team, and I agree! Consider all of the responsibility they carry on their shoulders. They are the last out of the parking lot and the last in. From their position, they can observe the other riders and any new riders in the group. They are the one who keeps the Lead informed of traffic closing in on the group, and they are the person who tries to keep the team together and help maintain the proper spacing between bikes. The Drag is the one who secures the lanes and notifies the Lead when all is safe. After all bikes have cleared a road hazard and it is once again safe to resume the staggered formation, the Drag will notify the Lead. If a rider in the group has a health issue and they need to pull out of the formation, or if a rider has a problem with their bike, it is the Drag and only the Drag who will stop and render assistance. If that should happen, the next rider in line assumes the Drag position and the responsibilities that go with it. If the Drag notices someone driving erratically, this may be a sign that the rider is having a serious health issue or mechanical failure. The Drag will immediately notify the Lead and with the help of his CB try to get the rider in question out of the group and to a safe stop. The Drag or the backdoor, does all of this for our benefit in hopes of reducing our risk. They deserve a pat on the back for what they volunteer to do, so be sure to thank them on every ride. With these responsibilities, special training is needed to become a responsible Drag. DO NOT PUT JUST ANYBODY BACK THERE! Every Drag should participate in a Road Captain and Team Riding seminar, and they should have a CB that works well. It s helpful too if they are in the Rider Education Levels Program and are current in CPR/First-Aid and Riding Courses. Now we know who that person called Drag is. It is not a position for everybody, but if you are well trained and are asked to be Drag for your Team, accept the duties, and after completing a safe Team Ride, you will be proud to be Drag. We can all have safe Team Rides when everyone assumes responsibility for their own ride. Come to the ride in good health, well rested, and have your bike in good mechanical condition. Being well prepared will make both the Lead and Drag positions easier. If we follow this advice everyone will have a more enjoyable and hopefully a safer ride. Ride Smart and Stay Safe!
