3 A Word from your Chapter Directors Here we are and summer is in full swing. The Branson Rally was a BIG success and we had a blast. The weather was a little stormy but we managed. The Light Show and Parade were a success with 90+ bikes participating. We would also like to Thank all that helped to pull it off. Chapter Z had a GREAT turn out for the Rally; as a matter of fact we had the largest preregistered Chapter with 36 pre-registered. Each and every one in the Chapter should be proud of this award. We know we are very proud to be able to accept the award on behalf of the Chapter. Cheryl Engleman our Chapter Historian took 1 st Place for the Scrapbook, Jan Bacon our Newsletter Editor took 2 nd Place for the Newsletter, Chapter Z s commercial banner took 3 rd Place and Chapter Hat/Cap took 3 rd Place. Mark Meyer also received 2 nd Place in the Light Show and 2 nd Place for Custom Trike. We hope if you traveled to Madison, Wisconsin for Wing Ding you had a blast and were able to meet some New Friends. Wing Ding is always a huge event and sometimes it s hard to see and participate in everything that is offered. We also have the Region E Rally fast approaching where our very own Missouri District Couple, Les & Sara Gibson along with our very own Missouri District Individual, Tom Braun will be in the selection process for the Region title. If you are able, we hope you plan on attending to show them your support. As a Chapter we are very proud of Les, Sara and Tom as they have represented the Missouri District very well and are very deserving of the Region title. Upcoming in August we have the Ride for Kids which supports the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. If you have never participated in this event we hope you plan on attending this year. We will be there in full force to support the cause. If you would like to volunteer to help that morning please see us or Greg Hoette for more information. For the month of July we have a ride planned to Crown Candy. We have never been there so this is going to be a first for us. We understand they have a BLT sandwich that you cannot believe and the ice cream is out of this world. Did you also know that in July they celebrate National Ice Cream Day??? We will be celebrating this with a trip to Ginny s on July 20th to show them our support; we hope you plan on attending. Please watch your for Impromptu Rides in the month of July!!! 4 Roamin with the Ruegges June has been a very busy month. It started off with the Missouri District Rally in Branson. Chapter Z won several awards including having the most pre-registered members with 36. Chapter Z was again responsible for the light show and parade which was a huge success. On June 14 we had 15 bikes and 19 people on a great sammich ride to Hannibal. On our dinner ride to Case & Bucks we had 35 members present. On the 21st we had Wings at the Drive-in. We only had 6 bikes and 1 car but we had a fun WET evening!!! We ended the month with a beautiful ride to Garden of the Gods State Park in Southern Illinois. We had 13 people and 9 bikes. 5 THE EDUCATIONAL JOURNEY Happy July fellow Goldwingers. I want to talk about helmets and some of the things to look for and think about when making YOUR selection. First, the life of a helmet is between three and five years unless the helmet has been dropped or damaged in some manner. There are many types of helmets Brain Bucket, Designer, Opened Face, Three Quarter Face, Full Face, and Modular. In my opinion, the Brain Bucket provides the least protection. The Designer can leave you wanting more protection. The Three Quarter is worn by many people and has been for years; usually with a shield attached. Some people have a problem with putting the Full Face helmet on or taking it off; in my opinion this helmet provides the most protection. Now about the Modular, some are supposed to give the same protection as the Full Face. As I always say It is your Decision. All of these helmets have RATINGS, DOT, SNELL, and ECE. Think about the color. Do you want to match up with your bike or would you rather select a BRIGHT color and add some more safety of being seen? I hope I have sparked your curiosity. One of the most important things to remember when purchasing a new helmet is to select a COMPETENT salesperson to help you get a proper fit. Until next month, remember it is your decision. 6 Our Motto... Share the Road! Our Mission... To Facilitate A Reduction In Motorcycle Crashes With Other Motor Vehicles. NO MATTER THE SEASON, ALWAYS DRESS FOR THE FALL With a car, you step into your safety equipment. With a bike you put on your safety equipment. The right gear will help minimize impact and abrasion injuries if you do happen to have a crash. So before you and your co-rider swing a leg over that bike make sure your dressed properly. What does properly mean? At a minimum a helmet, eye protection, full fingered gloves, sturdy pants, a long sleeve jacket and over the ankle boots are recommended. If you re smart you will consider a full coverage helmet, jackets that have armor both stiff plates and soft pads for shoulders and elbows. Also, bright colors and reflective material go a long way to make you more visible. In addition to providing you with crash protection, it s important that your gear functions properly when you re on the bike. When properly fitted motorcycle gear can even make you more comfortable on the ride, letting you better focus on the road and the ride itself. 8 Rain Made Memories.. Thursday morning was overcast as vendors set up their displays. Then the rain came and came and came. Standing under the registration tent at the start of the Missouri District Rally I thought, Here we go again! I feared that my fellow Goldwingers would not show up for the event. Was I wrong! Not only did they come, they came in waves literally! Between each heavy shower they would come pouring in. GWRRA members always seem to have a smile on their face even when the weather conditions are not favorable. As I greeted one wet rider after another it soon became clear that the show would go on. As the sun came out for the Thursday evening Opening Ceremonies all seemed normal, especially when Bobby Jack s opened his catering trailer for homemade cobbler and root beer floats! Friday morning the rains came again. Always wanting a clean bike, Goldwingers from 17 states, were indulged by the Missouri monsoon. As I looked around I saw everyone laughing and having a good time as water continued to come down. Then the ice cream truck arrived and, for those not under the Registration tent, Jan Bacon, the District Event Coordinator, was out in the rain throwing ice cream to people sitting on the second floor balconies. Days like this are what make memories. There will always be a shared story about the Missouri Bike wash of 2014! By the time Friday evening arrived, the weather had cleared and the Light Parade to the Branson Landing was enjoyed by over 100 Gold Wingers as well as shoppers at the Landing. Despite the forecast of an 80% chance of rain, Saturday was a beautiful day and vendors were busy as Wingers bought that much needed chrome. I would like to thank the District Team for all they did to insure the success of this Rally. A special thanks to Jan Bacon, Les & Sara Gibson, Carol & Glenn White, John & Nancy Hofmann, Mike & Barb Bayuk, Jerry Blatt & Scooter Beatty, Allen & Debby Biddlingmeier, Jerry Rothermich & Sally Enderle, Tom Braun and Marty Hall for helping whenever and wherever things needed to be done! A Special thank you also goes to everyone who helped pack the F4 Windshield vendor Saturday so they could return home after a sudden death in their family. As I saw everyone working together I was reassured GWRRA is one big family! Be sure to come back next year and we will dry your bikes! It s the Journey not the Destination! Bruce S.
