3 WORDS FROM THE CD: by Leslee & Ron Turner As I sit here on Father s Day, I m thinking about all the great dads, stepdads, or uncles in Chapter E. I hope you all had a fun day with your family if they are close by, or by phone, Skype, Face Time, or however you connect. I m sure we all thought about our own fathers too, whether they are still with us or not. Due to vacation travels, Kay is trying to get the July newsletter out early. So it may be a shorter newsletter this time. The trips to Americade by Bob; Andrew; John; Goran; Dave & Kay; and Ron & Leslee, via the Can Am Spyder 10th Anniversary Homecoming in Valcourt, Quebec are safely completed. Yes, there was rain on the way to and at Americade the whole first full day of the event. But on Wednesday the sun came out and the rest of Americade was sunny. We enjoyed our June 14 Sweet Treat Ride to Freddy s in Holly Springs. People really seem to like Freddy s custard. And while there, we saw the banner on the Texas Roadhouse next door to Freddy s that it opens on July 24th!!! You know where I ll be! Donna, Mike, Tom, Carol, Rod, Ron, and Leslee had a fun trip to the Burgaw Blueberry Festival on June 17. It was hot and humid with rain expected, so we caravanned in 4 cars using CB so it felt like a GoldWing ride. Altogether, we managed to acquire blueberry cobbler, blueberry pie, blueberry cream cheese pound cake, and a very tart blueberry lemonade. Although there was heavy rain for a short while, we were enjoying lunch in at Harvey s, so we didn t get wet! Our June 25, 4 PM, dinner ride will be led by Richard and Dottie IF Richard is getting around after his ankle surgery. He s doing better, but still can t walk very well. The Virginia District rally is July 6-8. Tom and Carol are teaching a co-rider seminar if you need that. Check with them to find out which day they are presenting. I believe Mike and Donna are planning to go at least for a day. Please decide if you are going so you can talk to them about it if you want. Our July 12th, 7:30 PM, Sweet Treat ride is to be led by Jerry and Jeannie. We look forward to hearing all about their new home maybe see pictures. During our January planning session, we discussed a trip to the Airborne Museum on Sunday, July 16, leaving Kroger at 11 AM. The museum opens at noon on Sundays. Reggie may be able to lead this ride if he s not working out of town we hope he can. The website for the museum is Carol is recovering nicely from her surgery, and she and Tom are busy with District and Region training. Judy has finished her radiation treatments so that s a blessing. 4 WORDS FROM THE CD: Cont I will be having surgery for breast cancer which was diagnosed since our last gathering. I haven t had all the tests yet, but I m not going to die, so you still have to put up with me. Time for me to plug the need for an assistant chapter director, though. Our July Gathering is July 18. Leslee and Ron Turner, NC-E Chapter Directors CHAPTER EDUCATOR CORNER: Intersections or Curves? by Reggie Lane, Chapter Educator If you were asked, Where do most motorcycle accidents occur? what would your response be? Maybe you had a near miss in one or both of these locations and the answers to this question might be different depending on the individual. Well, according to the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF), intersections and curves are the locations where most motorcycle accidents occur, with intersections having the greatest potential. Intersections: The reason they happen at intersections may be more obvious than you think. This is the area where traffic crosses paths and the likelihood of a conflict is greater. One location to pay close attention to is the vehicle that is trying to make a left turn across your lane of travel. This vehicle thinks it can make the turn before you arrive at the location of the turn and most times they are wrong. What should we do to reduce a possible conflict from happening in this location, you ask? Curves: 1) Scanning in all directions for possible hazards that may cross your path. 2) Possibly slow down when getting close to the intersection. 3) Cover the controls (clutch and foot over rear brake). The curve is where motorcyclists have single vehicle accidents. Yes, only you are involved in the accident. They simply just run off the road. Sounds unbelievable, but when you tend to stare at an object that is located off the road, you go that direction until you run out of road. This is called "Target Fixation. There is a saying we use in the Basic rider course, Where you look is where you go. I tell riders it is a positive and a negative. If you want to negotiate a curve correctly, look as far as you can through the curve to the end (positive). If you look at a pothole or debris in the road, you will hit it (negative). Merely look to the side of it and you will miss it. So in the future beware of these two locations and use active scanning when negotiating either one. Pg 4 of 20
