4 CHAPTER DIRECTORS Tom & Neva Reed Hello Mudbugs I hope you all had a great 4th of July, I know my Grandchildren did and so did I until I burned my Hand. Watch out for those sparklers, they are dangerous! Well we are past the middle of the year and the heat is hear to stay! So remember if you are outside riding your bike or just working in the yard, keep hydrated and cool down from time to time. Wing Ding is the end of August and it looks like it will be a blast in Texas! Chapter events were a little slow in July, as I was out for the first two weeks with my Grandchildren, but we still has some fun and good rides. Mickey lead a Saturday morning ride through some great roads in Texas culminating at the Picket House in Woodville for Lunch. Those who participated in the ride told me it was a very nice ride with good weather and a delicious home cooked meal. Our dinner ride on 13 July had a good turn out at the Philly Pizza with really good food and even better fellowship. Unfortunately I hurt my left hand and could not ride for most of July, but I got a chance to ride at the end of the month. Our last ride for the month was around Bundick Lake, the weather was actually very nice (cool) and we ended up at O Rileys for the Vets Car/Bike wash and Sophie gat a bubble bath! I am still hoping to get a planning session before Wing Ding with any Chapter members that are interested. I am moving my departure time to early Wednesday morning to try and beat some of the heat. I have several routs identified to get from here to there via backroads vice running down the freeway to Dallas. We will have our Chapter Appreciation day in August and I will put out the details at the Chapter Gathering. Just a reminder I am still looking for someone to replace me as the Chapter Director as I will be stepping down in January. 5 Hello Mudbugs!! Don t stop riding because it is hot be smart!! Leave early around 6AM 8 AM in the summer for you can adjust to the heat as it heats up! Don t leave for a ride in the middle of the heat! We are year-round rider, we must prepare for both hot and cold weather conditions. Since riding with full protective gear, or ATGATT (all the gear all the time), is always the best option for safety, we must learn how to keep cool properly while riding in hot weather. Our body regulates heat by sweating. As sweat is released from the body onto the surface of your skin, evaporation occurs. Evaporation is the primary method by which sweat cools the body, and it works by the principle of latent heat of vaporization. Latent heat is the amount of heat absorbed or released when a substance, like water, changes state, such as from liquid to vapor. One gram of water requires approximately 580 calories of energy to vaporize. This energy is drawn from the body in the form of heat. Thus, as sweat vaporizes, it pulls heat out of the body, cooling you down. So we must find ways to stay cool in this heat. In these high-heat conditions, wear a long-sleeved, tight-fitting exercise shirt made of moisture-wicking material. As long as you have air moving over the fabric, it will work great. As sweat evaporates, it takes your body heat with it. Moisture-wicking material draws sweat away from the body to be evaporated through the shirt, aiding the cooling process. Conventional materials can simply trap sweat next to the skin, limiting evaporation. The key to these materials is air flow. If there is no air movement over the material, then the shirt will become oversaturated, and sweat will not evaporate. When air temperatures are high and the reverse wind chill is in effect, wetting down clothing will increase the amount of moisture near the skin. This moisture is now available to be evaporated, drawing heat from your body. Although much of the evaporation will be caused by the high air temperature itself, there will be enough water on the skin to reduce the amount you need to sweat. Here are some tips to help ensure hydration. Some techniques for wetting down include neck bandanas (particularly those with water-absorbing crystals), wetting down a regular cotton t-shirt, cool vest, a shammee to put around your neck, taking your helmet inside when you stop. Try wetting your wrists that helps to keep you cool, Carry Extra Water: Be wary of taking in ice-cold water too fast., it can causes an upset stomach. Swish it about your mouth to bring its temperature up a bit before swallowing. Dehydration is not something you can tough out it will kill you if you don t remedy it. Deep-colored urine and headaches are early signs that you are in need of water. If you stop sweating, heat stroke is not far behind. Drink water often! Only Water is Water: Caffeine and alcohol are diuretics, which cause you to urinate and lose more water. Please be prepared to tell us at the gathering of the things that can help us stay cool Also all two wheelers please sign up for a ERC 4 hour class for the fall with a charge of $30. 6 Louisiana Senior District Directors Red and Brenda Roussel Hello Wingers, Well, most of you have heard that National will be doing away with the Region level of GWRRA. I don t have all the answers and reasons why, but as I get them I ll pass them on to you. Many members have been on Social Media about what is happening. You are jumping the gun, because a lot of things have not been finalized. Please, wait to see what the final outcome will be before stating your thoughts. If you are planning to go to Wing Ding, I m sure your plans are complete, if not you need to get on board to make this great gathering. Most of the District team made the Arkansas Rally and had a great time. The rides and hotel were said to be perfect for attending a Rally. Brenda is coming along well and soon we will be back in action. Upcoming events are as follow, Chapter H Dinner Ride on Aug. 19, 2017, the Color Ride on October 28, 2017 and Regions Fall ride. You need to make plans for these Rides and enjoy all of them. Many Chapters are making evening rides to beat the heat, boy I can understand why, it s HOT. The District is trying to put on an Individual Training and Certification Program Class in the state. We have received seven names for the class. We will close the request on Aug. 10, 2017 and move on with planning this class. If you are interested please notify me by phone or . As things unveil with GWRRA, I ll be in contact with your Director to pass this information to the membership, until then sit tight until things are sorted out. I would like to welcome Kathy Wyble as the new Chapter Director for Chapter B and thank Keith and Debbie Barnes for the great job they have done for GWRRA.
