Doug Spire - Director director@dillonbrothershog.com Summer is here and the hot weather and storms have been hard to deal with lately. I am glad that none of our members had significant damage during the tornadoes that went through a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately we had to postpone our annual HD Poker Run that was scheduled for the Saturday afterwards but we will be looking at potential weekends in the fall to have the run. There have been many other Chapter rides over the last couple of months that were very successful and a few that unfortunately, the weather made us cancel but nothing like the last couple of years. July and August have a lot of great rides planned already as well with the big one being The Day of the HOG on July 15 th. Please try to help out by selling raffle tickets for the motorcycle or volunteering for the Poker Run stops. If you need books of tickets to sell or need to turn them in, you can contact Dillon Brothers and they can help you out. For any volunteer information please contact Joni Elliff at editor@evhog.net and she can take care of you. This is going to be a great event that is ending at Cottonwood Cove in Blair again this year. If you didn t make it last year, it was a great time!!! Remember, July, August and September Chapter meetings are ride-to meetings. The reason we all bought our motorcycles was to ride them so lets get out there and go for a ride. Watch the calendar THROTTLE THURSDAY
July is here, which means DOTH (Day Of The Hog) is just a few short weeks away - July 15 th to be exact. Raffle tickets are going strong but there are still opportunities to sell tickets. As my weekly blasts state, contact Mike Foisey at mfoisey@msn.com. Mike is also looking for volunteers for tickets sales at registration and at Cottonwood. If you are available, please contact him at the above address. The next 3 months plan to have some good riding. We are always planning rides that are open to non-members so bring friends and neighbors and introduce them to the chapter. Also continually monitor the calendar and activity page for new events. Also, a reminder to those who are selling DOTH raffle tickets - they need to be turned back into Mike Foisey or Tom K no later than July 11 th. Let s make the next few months memorable and fun months of riding. If you have any suggestions or ideas for future newsletters please me.

Safety Corner Hot weather is upon us (thank God) and we re all out riding. Please take a few moments to consider some riding tips to keep you safe during extreme heat Riding in really hot weather is not bad when you re prepared for it. Remember to hydrate, keep your skin covered, and avoid hazards. Don t let the heat weaken you to the point where you re not fully attentive to traffic conditions and the road. Basically, you must consider how your body will deal with the heat. Reducing the effects of convection, through covering up and wetting down, will reduce the amount of heat that your body must deal with through evaporation. Covering up in the heat will keep you cool. Hot weather usually means lots of sun exposure, so get some good sunglasses or a darkened visor to prevent headaches caused by sun glare. And don t forget to put sunblock on the back of your neck where your riding gear leaves the skin exposed. Ride safe. Ride aware. Tips for Riding Cool Tips for Riding Cool In these high-heat conditions, wear a long-sleeved, tight-fitting exercise shirt made of moisture-wicking material. I know that it seems counter-intuitive to wear long sleeves, but as long as you have air moving over the fabric, it will work great. As sweat evaporates, it takes your body heat with it. Moisture-wicking material draws sweat away from the body to be evaporated through the shirt, aiding the cooling process. Conventional materials can simply trap sweat next to the skin, limiting evaporation. The key to these materials is air flow. If there is no air movement over the material, then the shirt will become oversaturated, and sweat will not evaporate. When air temperatures are high and the reverse wind chill is in effect, wetting down clothing will increase the amount of moisture near the skin. This moisture is now available to be evaporated, drawing heat from your body. Although much of the evaporation will be caused by the high air temperature itself, there will be enough water on the skin to reduce the amount you need to sweat. Some techniques for wetting down include neck bandanas (particularly those with water-absorbing crystals), wetting down a regular cotton t-shirt, or even pouring water directly into your helmet. Keeping Hydrated Staying hydrated is one of the most important things to do while on the road. The difference between covering up or not is about 20 oz./hour and 40 oz./hour, respectively. Here are some tips to help ensure hydration. Wear a Camelback: For longer rides, wear a camelback-type water bag on your back. Fill with half ice and half water before the ride, and those cooling sips do add up to make the difference, if you re doing it. cont d.
Carry Extra Water: I carry a gallon jug of water in my side case on longer days of riding. Be wary of taking in ice-cold water too fast. In my case, it causes an upset stomach. Swish it about your mouth to bring its temperature up a bit before swallowing. Only Water is Water: Caffeine and alcohol are diuretics, which cause you to urinate and lose more water. When it s hot, steer clear of sugary drinks, caffeine, and alcohol. Also, never drink alcohol directly before or during your ride. Urine Test: Go for the clear. Dehydration is not something you can tough out it will kill you if you don t remedy it. Deep-colored urine and headaches are early signs that you are in need of water. If you stop sweating, heat stroke is not far behind. Drink water often! Tar Snakes Tar snakes are a hazard for both motorized and pedaled two-wheeled vehicles and their riders. Many states use a tar-like material to fill in cracks on the roads; these can become quite slippery when it s hot. Avoid them if possible. Treat them the same as railroad tracks by crossing them at 90 degrees and in an upright position. Slow down if your rear tire starts sliding out from under you stay calm and the tire will grip again. Don t try to over-correct, keep your line, keep your head up, grip lightly, and keep your body steady for when the gripping action returns. If there s a large patch of tar snakes and there is no way to avoid them all, I will sometimes pull in the clutch and treat the obstacle as I would a large patch of ice, coast through it, and after ensuring that the rear wheel is clear, re-engage the engine. This helps to keep from slipping.

To join, enter the number in the TO and enter dbhog in the message. Once sent, you will get a confirmation text. To stop getting the text, reply to an Dillon Brothers HOG As summer heats up and we all get busy, we need to keep some things in mind. We need to ensure we allow time to get up and get personal with our Harley Davidson. A good regular cleaning gives you a great opportunity to inspect your bike for wear and potential problems. We need to also make sure that we (this includes myself) arrive early for rides to ensure that we all listen to the ride briefing. I know it is hard to arrive early, even for me. I have been trying to plan some different rides. If you have any ideas, let me know. Shawn Curran headroadcaptain@dillonbrothershog.com
Hello DBHOG members, Kevin Graham here. As of this writing, we have 142 members. We are behind on our membership count compared to last year at this time. I would encourage all of you to reach out to friends that you may know to encourage them to give us a try. Have them come out on a ride or attend one of our meetings and see what we are all about. As you know our membership dues funds our activities so the more members we have, the more activities we can sponsor. We are looking at additional activities we can participate in to encourage and drive members. If any of you have any ideas on something you believe might help us on our drive for more members, please let me know. Our Activities Officer has done a good job in coming up with events, so there are plenty of things for people to become involved in. If you have potential members and don t feel comfortable approaching them, let me know and I will do the rest, just need names and contact information.
