Type HOG in the message block of a text message and send it to To get s, send message to: renegadehogchapter@gmail.com. Kelley Pears, Head Road Captain, had a very successful Road Captain meeting where we lined up rides and activities for the next three months. This will appear on the Renegade HD calendar along with their activities so that you can get all the information at one location. Please come join us as often as you can. If the weather doesn t cooperate during this time of year, I ll have an e-blast sent out about cancellations. Spring is just around the corner, which gets me to thinking about riding my bike more. Prior to doing that it would be a good time to go over your bike and get those improvements, maintenance and safety items done.

8 Proper Stopping Techniques By Kelley Pears J A N U A R Y / F E B R U A R Y N E W S L E T T E R P A G E 8 At Renegade HOG, WE RIDE. Part of safe, fun riding is STOPPING. Most of the accidents I ve seen while riding motorcycles have occurred at very low speeds, and most frequently, when the rider is coming to a stop. So, let s do a brief review of proper stopping techniques. First, be aware of your surroundings. What are the conditions of the road or parking lot? Is there oil, gravel or some other substance on the pavement which might adversely affect your ability to stop or have proper foot placement? Be aware and prepare. Next, as you are planning your stop, start by downshifting to slow your speed and take some pressure off of the brakes themselves. As you begin to slow use EQUAL pressure on both the front and rear brakes. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation reports that 70% of the braking power is in the front brake. As we begin braking, the weight of the bike (including rider/passenger) is transferred to the front of the bike, thus placing more demand on the front brake. By using both brakes, you decrease the chance of locking up the brakes and skidding. As you come to a stop, put your LEFT FOOT down first. After coming to a complete stop, then put your right foot down while having the handlebars square with the road (facing directly ahead). Why is this? Because your right foot should be on the brake pedal applying that equal braking pressure. At times, I ve noticed riders coming to a stop and both feet are running in the air. The problem here is that the rider is relying solely on the front brake to stop, which usually ends up in the bike LUNGING FORWARD at the last moment. If the handle bars are at a slight angle (not squared), the bike, along with rider and possibly passenger, are also lunged forward. Unless you have quick feet, you run the risk of falling over to the same side that the handle bars are turned. One last thing. When riding in cold weather, we tend to dress in layers. Sometimes these layers restrict our movement, making it harder to get our feet off of the pegs or floorboards. That is, it takes a second or two longer to get our feet down on the ground. This may result in a spill, which can be painful and costly on repairs. So, give yourself some extra time to get your feet down if you are bundled up tight! In summary: Look ahead, assess the pavement conditions; Downshift to slow down; Use EQUAL PRESSURE on front and rear brakes; Left foot down FIRST, followed by the right foot once you have come to a complete stop. Be SAFE, have FUN.
9 Do You Practice Biker Wave Etiquette? J A N U A R Y / F E B R U A R Y N E W S L E T T E R P A G E 9 Unfortunately, the proper way to adopt the wave (without looking like a total dork) is not covered in the basic or advanced motorcycle safety classes. However, if you re a friendly, casual rider you probably use one of the following acceptable waves:? Left Hand Low: Aimed down towards street with the extension of 1, 2, 3 or 5 fingers. Left Hand Straight Out: Arm fully or partially extended higher or lower than shoulder. Left Hand High: Elbow should be bent with slight forward angling of the forearm. Right Hand: Typically employed by Ultra Classic or Goldwing riders Left Hand Forward: Almost imperceptible due to the speed of the wave and the bike. To Wave or Not to Wave? (To be honest there is no wave etiquette; you re a biker after all) Some motorcyclists wave at all other motorcyclist. This gets old quickly; imagine driving a Chevy and waving at every other Chevy that you see. Some don't wave at any. They're either afraid to take their hands of the handlebars or they're just too bad a$$ to be bothered. Some only wave at Bikers on certain types of motorcycles. They're just too cool to be associated with the rest of us. Some even wave at scooters. That's slumming it a bit, I think. Nearly all will wave at a pretty young thing, whether she on a Bike or not.
