HOGwash The Official publication of the Yavapai AZ H.O.G. Chapter 1271 January, 2017 Volume16, Issue 1 Sponsored by: Grand Canyon Harley-Davidson Highway 69 Mayer, AZ Toll Free: GCHD (4243) Director s Memo Hello HOG members! WOW! What a great Christmas Party! Our Christmas Party Committee did an outstanding job putting this together for us and I know all of you will join me as I give a very special THANK YOU to Shannon McKibben, Lillian Bish, Deb Packard, Monty Packard, Dennis Owens, Val Peters and Morgan for all of the hard work and great planning they put into this! I really had a great time at the party, visiting with good friends and enjoying all the shenanigans during the gift exchange! You guys are so AWESOME! So we re about to kick off a new year of riding, and with that we ll reset the points for the Road Warrior program back to zero. We re also going to kick off the Road Scholar program at the January meeting, so make sure you ride so that we can record your starting mileage! This will be a great program to see who s really riding their motorcycles vs. just keeping a cool garage ornament! I truly hope everybody has enjoyed this Season with family and friends and is looking forward to new adventures in 2017! Our 2016 Christmas Party was on Dec 17 th, and a great time was had by all!! We missed those of you who could not make it hope you can celebrate with us in 2017! Our membership and party guests were very generous!! A total of $690 was raised and there was even a bidding war between Troy Weigel and Kyle Rose for a set of HD Prints! The $690 will be split between our charities The Salvation Army and Disabled American Veterans. The donations stay local to help local families and veterans. Some of you may notice a change in the Veterans charity selected. Our original selection Veterans Upward Yavapai College, did not respond after several attempts to contact them. A very sincere and huge THANK YOU to our Christmas Party committee: Lillian Bish, Dennis Owens, Deb Packard, Monty Packard and Val Peters. We could not have had this party without all of your help, support and guidance over the past few months the many meetings at Culver s paid off!! Stay tuned to the LOH section of the Hogwash I m planning for some fun LOH activities and rides for the entire group! Happy and Healthy 2017! Shannon McKibben - LOH Officer 3 Editor: Troy Weigel editor@yavapaihog.com
4 Hello Chapter Members and Friends, Editor s Notes I just wanted to let you know that we have added or will be adding a few more advertisers in the HOGwash. These advertisers are local businesses that support the motorcycle riding lifestyle. Many of them will offer special pricing or discounts to show their appreciation for your business. So lets do our part and shop these businesses. In addition to the new advertisers there will be fliers from GCH-D to keep you informed about what is happening at the dealership. Still no winners for the mystery HOG number. A few national HOG numbers are posted each month somewhere in the HOGwash. The numbers are printed in small print and are posted in different places each month. Find your number, come to the monthly chapter meeting, tell one of the officers the page your number is on, and claim your prize. It is that simple. If you have any questions or suggestions for improving YOUR HOGwash please let me know. Have a safe and fantastic Christmas and a Happy New Year!!! Troy Editor, HOGwash Wreaths across America final note Christmas is over and I hope everyone had a wonderful time with family and friends. I wanted to give a big THANK YOU to everyone that donated money and helped lay the wreaths this year at Prescott National Cemetery for the Wreaths Across America event. This was the best year to date with 2,763 wreaths received to Honor and Remember our veterans. It was an emotional ceremony and outstanding to see so many groups and people in our communities pull together to honor our lost veterans and make it such a success every year. Our Director Mike McKibben and myself had the privilege to place a wreath at the memorial this year and it makes you feel honored to be part of this event. I encourage everyone to attend at least once to experience such a heartfelt event. Once again thanks to all of you and let s make 2017 the best year ever Be Safe and Ride Safe! Garry Young Treasurer
5 Hello Fellow HOG Members!! It s the start of a New Year and I hope you all enjoyed spending time with friends and family over the holidays. I know I did! As we get ready for the New Year and riding season we are working on putting the calendar together and one of the items that we will be adding is the Accident Scene Management Class. As you all remember this class was offered back in November but was cancelled due to the fact that we didn t have the minimum number of participants. To help insure that we have enough people we are working with our sister chapter in Flagstaff to ensure we have enough attendees. Before we set a date please respond back to me be the 15 th of January. As more information becomes available I will keep you updated. Ride safe! Bob Hastings Safety Officer Continued from page 1 As always, my thanks to all of you for all you do for this chapter! We still have a vacant officer position for Activities Officer, and I m hoping one of you will boldly step forward soon so that we can fill the calendar with fun rides! But until an Activities Office can be recruited, let s start sharing ideas and suggestions either through to any of the officers, or by bringing your ideas to the chapter meetings! Most importantly, let s all get out there and RIDE and have FUN! I hope everyone has a safe and very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, and I hope your holidays are filled with love and family, good health, good friends and great food! Mike Sprinkles McKibben Director
HEAD ROAD CAPTAIN 6 Head Road Captain: Wayne Schwetje PLANNING THE RIDE It s always a good idea to prepare a map of the route with all the stops indicated. If some bikes become separated from the group, they can catch up at the next stop. If you re not out for a scenic ride, plan the most direct route to an event or activity. Interstate highways offer the following advantages: - All traffic is moving in one direction. - No cross-traffic or traffic lights to split up your group, if possible. When there are three lanes, it is wise to travel in the middle lane. This allows faster traffic to pass and will also allow vehicles to enter/exit the highway more easily. If you re out for a scenic ride, be sure traffic conditions will allow it. For example, is there a county fair or car show in the area that day to complicate the ride? Plan stops to avoid gravel lots and left-hand turns. No one likes gravel, and in a group, it s even less fun. Right-hand turns in and out of stops will help the group stay together. Plan gas stops at least every 90 miles, so folks with smaller tanks can fill up and stay with the group. If you have a large group stopping at a restaurant, call the restaurant far enough in advance to allow them to prepare for a large group. If you expect a particularly large group and it s possible to get a police escort or traffic control at the start/end of a ride or along the route, great! Otherwise, it is a good idea to at least inform the police department of your plans and perhaps drop off a map. Never block traffic yourself; it may be against the law!

8 Assistant Director s Notes Hello Fellow Chapter Members, Yep it is official, 2017 is here!!!! A new year with a bunch of opportunities for our chapter. We will be starting the year off with a fun chapter ride. The Frosty Balls ride is on New Year s Day. We ll be riding to Lake Pleasant. Check out the flier on page 2. This will be just the beginning. In 2017 we will be starting the Road Scholar program. This will be a program that will reward you simply for putting miles on your Harley. A brief description about the program is on page 15. Your new chapter officers want to make 2017 a fun riding year for everyone! The end of the year for chapter finished with the chapter Christmas party. We had around 50 people attend. The White Elephant gift exchange was filled with excitement and laughter. Then there was the silent auction. The HOT action was over a set of reproduction Harley-Davidson motorcycle blue prints. Kyle Rose tried to out bid everyone, but determination won out in the end. Now I just need to find a professional framing shop for them!!!! Have a SAFE, FUN, and Prosperous New Year!!!!! 15 Road Scholar Challenge 15 The Road Scholar Challenge is a program where Chapter members are recognized for the miles they ride over the course of one year. The program starts and ends each year on or about the November Chapter meeting. Riders and passengers can sign up at any time of the year but the counting ends for everyone at the November Chapter meeting. A suitable-for-framing certificate will be presented to all participants, and the top 3 mileage earners will receive a special prize. You can see any of our Chapter Officer to sign up. Only miles ridden on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle count toward your annual mileage total. You can ride your bike, add a bike or trade bikes. Fly & Ride or rental miles count too. Only full members in Good Standing are eligible for the challenge. Please note: for our inaugural year (2017), we will take the starting mileage at the Christmas Party, or at the January chapter meeting. Road Scholar Guidelines: You may sign-up whenever you wish, but the sign-out mileage must be verified by the November Chapter meeting or the Birds on Bikes ride. Your sign-out mileage is your sign-in mileage for the following year. A current H.O.G. Chapter Officer must verify mileages. A GCH-D service receipt may be used to verify beginning mileage on a certain date. You may register more than one bike at a time and total the annual mileages for awards. You may trade bikes during the year and combine the annual mileages. Just let us know or document this for us with a sales receipt. You may use Fly & Ride miles and add to your annual miles, just present a receipt. We will announce the results and award certificates at the February Chapter meeting. We will record the following information: your first and last name, bike year, model, color, bike miles start, bike miles finish, bike miles total.
