From The Director Cecil Brasher I hope you were able to attend this year s holiday party. We had a blast.lots of door prizes, good food, great friends and a good time had by all. The annual holiday party is just one of many ways the chapter returns your yearly dues; and your chapter officers have been working hard to ensure that we have lots of opportunities to get together and have fun in the coming months. Be sure mark you calendars and attend as many of them as you can. During our January officer s meeting, we established an Anniversary Committee and asked them to come up with as many ways as possible to celebrate our Chapters 10 th anniversary. I can t wait to see what they come up with. To get the celebration started, we ve had a special anniversary patch designed just for our chapter. Once they arrive, we will make them available for sale at our chapter meetings for $15. Come early and pick one up as I expect these to go fast. As you all know, this year is also Harley Davidson s 110 th Anniversary and H.O.G.s 30 th Anniversary. If you are going, and would like to ride to Milwaukee and back as a group, the chapter is planning a ride leaving on Wednesday, August 28 th. We will spend the night at the Super8 in Madison, Wi. ( ) and arrive in Milwaukee Thursday morning. Everyone is responsible for making their own hotel reservations for the trip. We will depart Milwaukee Sunday morning and decide as a group if we want to stop over somewhere on the way home or ride straight through. More details will be provided as the date approaches, or feel free to contact me to discuss. Ever thought about getting a tattoo or piercing; or maybe you re just curious about the process? Get your questions answered at our February chapter meeting. I ve invited some folks from Dr. Jack s Ink Emporium to come and talk about tattoos and piercings. We will have Gary Mangiameli - Operations Coordinator, Christian Nasr and Troy De La Roas Tattoo Artists and Don Gloves Brown - piercer extraordinaire. These guys are all Harley enthusiasts and three of the 4 own their own hogs (the 4 th is in the process of getting one). This is definitely one meeting that you don t want to miss! I hope to see you all at one of our events SOON! Director of the best H.O.G. chapter in the world - Cecil

Words From Your Assistant Director Mark Henry Damn it s cold outside! I really miss last winter, where with an extra layer of clothing and your leathers, we were still able to venture out quite often. Those days have been numbered few this winter. However there has been opportunity. Enjoy it when you can. However, be careful out there!!! The sand, gravel, dirt and grime that remain on the streets after the snow melts off is a real traction and slipping hazard. The tire profile of most Harleys out there, have a contact area while moving down the road of just a little wider than a Quarter. That s a Quarter Dollar, not a quarter of your tire. It does not take much of a maneuver to create a slide out of your rear tire. Be particularly aware of those intersections, they tend to be an area of buildup of this slippery debris. Other scary areas are underpasses or across the road drainage areas. Melting snow or heavy humid winter air and temperatures that teeter on the edge of freezing or not, will scare the heck out of you not to mention a dangerous place where an accident could happen at any time. I know that I m stating the obvious to most people. I just want everyone to be aware and think safety on that next warm afternoon that you get excited because you can t see your breath. We do a quick check of our bikes, pull the tender off the battery, throw some warm clothes on and go. Most people are more concerned about the vehicles ahead of them kicking sand and road debris on them (Damn that stings!!!!) The start worrying about their bikes getting dirty, after all spent all winter shining it up. They often forget the safety hazards stated above until it s too late. All I m asking is that all y all keep your heads on and be aware. I want to make sure that I have plenty of friends to ride with our normal riding season begins. One last note on riding in cold weather, dress for it!!!!! I m not saying that you have to dress up like you re a character on South Park, layer smart and wear appropriate gear for the season. Did you know that the temperature the skin feels is 20 degrees colder than the outside temperature at 60mph? That means 45 degrees turns to 25 degrees real quick. I would like to put out also that the 2013 Nebraska State Hog Rally will be upon us in a few months. This year it is in Gering, NE. at the Gering Convention Center. The event this year will be May th. Registration should be ready on line by February 11 th, The Website is Deadline to pre register will be April 5th. I will be looking at a block of rooms in the Gering / Scottsbluff area for those interested. I will bring mail in registration forms to the February HOG Chapter Meeting and give more details on this event. I will also have information on other rallies in nearby states. Stay warm, think positive, and if you decide to ride please be aware. Thanks, Mark Henry - EVHOG

From Our Safety Officer Doug Spire With the extremely nice days we saw a couple of weeks ago in January, and everyone wanting to get the bikes out and ride, I thought I would discuss some things to consider while braving the cold. The problem we have when riding in the cold is that we do not generate any body heat sitting on our bikes. Even though we start out feeling warm and comfortable, within a short period of time we start getting cold due to the wind chill and remember the faster you go, the faster you will get cold. Also, always keep in mind that any bit of exposed skin will decrease the amount of time that it takes for the internal body temp to lower so try to keep everything covered up. In the last newsletter we discussed some of the safety gear that we need to keep in good condition while riding. There are additional items that are especially needed and will really help in the cold weather riding that we will review. Gloves are one of these items and can be a great safety barrier if you come in contact with the ground as well as give vibration protection to our hands that can be worn all year since they sell a variety of styles. When you are looking at gloves for cold weather riding make sure that you get a pair that are made for the cold temperatures and make sure they have a nice cuff that will extend over your jacket sleeves to cover the potentially exposed wrist areas. Leather jackets and chaps are some more items that are essential if you are going to be riding out in the cold. Leather is one of the best barriers to breaking the wind and not allowing it to penetrate to the skin like fabric does. Make sure that your leather jacket fits snug and if it has a liner, use it. Chaps will also break the wind and keep your legs as warm as possible. Like I stated before exposed skin will decrease the time for the internal body temperature to drop so make sure that you think about the face and neck areas. A lot of the half helmets are made with detachable ear and neck protector so make sure you put these back on before going out. If you do not have the attached protection in your helmet, use a scarf or hanker chief to tie around your face and neck. They also sell face protectors that are made of a heavier weight material to block the wind. Even though I don't like the idea very much, you may want to consider using a ¾ helmet with a face shield during the winter months. I went back to mine last fall and it really does help more then I like to admit. Although you might be uncomfortably hot while getting ready to ride, all of these suggestions will pay off once you are out riding for awhile. Lastly, if you are going to ride in the cold very much I suggest looking at heated gear. I just recently purchased my first heated jacket liner and heated gloves and, although the equipment is a little pricey, it is truly amazing. It was really nice while riding in 40 degree weather that I actually got hot enough I had to shut it off numerous times.

Tech Stuff from our Webmaster Bob Gilbreath It s hard to believe that our chapter has been around for 10 years already! It seems like a short time ago that we had our first official chapter meeting outside at Dillon s followed by our first chapter ride to Round the Bend. Holly & I have made many new friends over the years and look forward to meeting many more. I have served the chapter in many officer positions over the years but most frequent and current role is Webmaster. Our website serves as a communication tool to inform our members of upcoming events and to remind us of the good times had during prior events, as well as many other functions. I hope you find it as a useful tool to keep up to date with our chapter. I put together a few items that you may not know about our website; Photos Our photographer does an excellent job at capturing the moment but Patti can t be everywhere at all times. Any member with an urge to be a shutterbug is encouraged to take photos at our events and send them to me to be placed on the website! Photos sent to me for the website may be touched up a bit and sized down to be placed on the website, but I do maintain full resolution images as well so if you see a picture that you like, just let me know and I can supply you with a full resolution photo that can be used for printing. Also, if you see a photo of yourself that you prefer not be on the website (due to a witness protection program, or maybe it s just not a flattering pose), let me know and I will remove it, Have a smart phone? Want to link our EVHOG calendar to yours? Go to our web page ( and click on the Calendar link. Before clicking on the next link to view the calendar, scroll down and see the instructions for linking your google calendar to the EVHOG calendar. After setting this up, If you have an android phone, you will automatically see the EVHOG events. If you have an iphone it can be a little tricky, unless you download an app to do that. I recommend an app called CalenMob. It works very well. There is a free version (with ads) and a Pro version (no ads). Our Members Only section of our website is an area that is restricted to current members only where you can access newsletters, sign up for activities (highly encouraged) and many other things. We will be changing the password to the Members Only section on March 1 st. All 2013 members will receive the updated password via at that time. Among those other things that you can do in the Members Only section is to become more familiar with other chapter members by viewing photos (labeled with names) of current chapter members. It s a great way to match a name to a face! More and more member photos will be posted throughout the year. I m really looking forward to our 2013 riding season and our 10 year celebrations! If you have any questions, you can contact me at bob@evhog.net.

From Our Photographer Patti Brasher For the love of light! Photography and photo means light. There are two types of photographers professional and amateur. I think I am the amateur one who takes photographs for pleasure and to record an event, emotion, place, or person. I hope amateurs or professionals attending events will also take pictures and send them in. I can t be everywhere so please feel free to help me capture the fun. I can t wait to capture YOU at an upcoming event. I had a great time at the holiday party capturing people winning prizes, people sitting around with cookies on their head and sucking skittles from a straw. The holiday committees definitely created some laughter and fun with these ones. I also want to capture things about your ride, such as a new Harley, a new custom helmet. (see below), apparel or new accessory and let s not forget a new passenger. Whatever it is that makes your ride special and unique I will try to highlight them throughout the year. If you re new to the chapter, we have lots of people who love to ride and fun events planned so come join us. If you are there, come strike a pose for me! Patti

Membership News from Kevin Graham Hello and welcome to this month s article. At the time of this writing we are at 133 EVHOG members registered for I have been putting together some ideas that I have taken to Mick Ruff at Dillon s to get him started on a EVHOG banner that would promote our Chapter. We as Officers believe this would be a good tool to promote joining our chapter. Our thoughts would be to display this somewhere visible in the store. When we get the final designs and look them over, determine exactly where this will be displayed I will provide additional information. Some other ideas for driving membership that have been forwarded to me is to have a membership drive at the Dillon s Fremont store. I would like to find an event that is happening at the Fremont store that would drive more traffic through the store and have the membership drive during that event. I also plan on having Membership forms available at our Swap Meet, hopefully we will have a great turn out and we can pick up a few members. We are also looking at a pamphlet that could be displayed up at the Sales Counter at Dillon s promoting our Chapter. Mark Henry is working with Mick also on the creation of this pamphlet. Once again I will mention that if any of you have ideas that could help drive our membership I encourage you to forward those ideas to me. Keep in mind there is never a dumb idea or thought.

The View from the Back of the Bike - Tad Volkmann tad@evhog.net Gussie Addie This is a 1916 Indian Model F motorcycle that was used by the Van Buren sisters to become the first women to ride a motor cycle from coast to coast. Gussie and Adeline departed New York City on July 4, 1916, and arrived in Los Angeles on September 8 after travelling 5,500 miles over hazardous, frequently unpaved roads. Gussie and Addie, who were descendants of President Martin Van Buren, were involved in the National Preparedness Movement which proceeded World War I. They thought that women would make excellent motorcycle dispatch riders and set out on this historic trip to prove their point. The sisters became celebrities upon completion of their trip, and Addie applied to the Army, but the Army turned down her application! Want to be featured in this article? YOU are part of EVHOG s history! Send me a photo of you and your bike the year that you joined EVHOG, and a recent photo of you and your bike today. Let me know the year/model of both bikes, the year you joined EVHOG, and your favorite memory/activity with EVHOG since you joined. I will start running a feature on a different member or member couple each month, starting with the March Newsletter.

10 th ANNIVERSARY The Committee: We, Dan Hedberg, Cathy Welchert, Pat Roth, Tad Volkmann, Judy Stahlnecker, Lisa Logan and Patti Brasher will be meeting in February to come up with ideas to share throughout the year commemorating our 10 th Anniversary milestone. One exciting event we ll be doing is an EVH Time Capsule so start thinking about interesting suggestions for us to leave behind for those who will access this in the future. The committee will work on the details to include the container, size, location to store it and period of time before it is open. A list of items will be compiled to include your suggestions and then we ll be looking to the members to help gather those items. More communication will follow. A time capsule is a historic cache of goods or information, usually intended as a method of communication with future people and to help future archaeologists, anthropologists or historians. Time capsules are sometimes created and buried during celebrations such as a World's Fair, a cornerstone laying for a building or at other events. More importantly, we want to leave something to our future members. We are excited about this milestone which would not even be achievable without our membership and Dillon Harley-Davidson sponsorship. So, this year our committee will be looking for ways to celebrate YOU! Your 10th Anniversary Committee
