The day was cold but dry with no ice; this was a good winter day to for a soup walk. The walkers came back to hot soup and hot bread to warm up. We served 90 bowls of soup. Time and space was available for all to sit and talk as long as they wanted to with fellow walkers catching up on the latest news. Thanks to all the members who help before, during and after the walk. And thanks to other members who donated loaves of bread. Written By Dee Soup Walk For Next Year This kind of walk has been a success for the Trekkers and a local food pantry. The Trekkers are able to give back to the community while interacting on a personal level. If you know of a church or community center who would be interested in hosting a soup walk with us next year please contact Dee or Nikki Wilcoxen. There are some requirements that must be considered. The place must have a kitchen complete with stock pots, utensils for serving soup and be willing to let us bake bread, serve soup using their kitchen. It must have an area large enough for people to gather to eat and set up the start/finish table along with soup table, drink table, sales and future events. Of course we must be able to setup a trail from that location. Let s try this again next February at a new location. Please help in identifying a new location! Written By Dee VOLKSSPORTING 101 Q1: When we do the Illinois Trekkers YREs do we include both copies of the Start Card in the envelope with payment? A1: Yes Please include both copies of the start card with your payment. Q2: Do we put the Start Cards in the payment envelope before or after we walk? A2: You are always required to carry your start card with you on a walk. Q3: Do we stamp our books before or after we complete the walk? A3: This is always tricky. Most clubs want you to place the payment and envelope in the box after you walk. My personal preference depends on the accessibility of the box. If I have to ask someone for the box/binder I do it all at once so as not to interrupt the person at the desk. I then mail it in if they supply an address for the club. That way you have the chance to answer all the checkpoints and make payment. Q4: Can we use Illinois Trekker Bucks as part of our walk fee? A4: Trekker bucks and coupons can be used for all the Illinois Trekker YREs. Thanks for all the questions.. It is nice to see that we have people out there that are really getting into volkssporting! 2 Nashville or Bust Earlier this year Illinois Trekkers decided on a volkssporting weekend to Louisville Kentucky during Labor Day. Unfortunately, while trying to plan an interesting weekend with some great walks, we discovered most of the things that made the area really unique were not available at this time of the year. So in keeping with the promise to make an interesting trip for us volkssporters and our non-volkssporting friends, we decided to seek another location. Nashville it is! The home of country music. Now don t be fooled, you do not have to be a country music fanatic to enjoy this trip! We will leave Saturday morning. Walk the Nashville Capital walk in the afternoon. We will have a sanctioned poker swim Saturday evening, along with line dancing in the pool. We will have wine tasting and games for the night owls. Sunday s walk will be through several college campuses in Nashville. Back at the hotel we will clean up and head out to Mellow Mushroom for lunch, a tour of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Studio B, followed by dinner and a show. Monday on our way home we will stop in Superman s hometown of Metropolis to walk the YRE and have lunch. We plan to have a full bus so sign up early if interested in going with us. There are two walks back to back that day in the same area. One goes through Lincoln s New Salem, complete with log cabins. Many weekends there are historical commentators located in many of the buildings ready to tell you about life in the villager during Lincoln s time, the buildings, the role they are portraying in the community during the life of Lincoln. St Pat's Parade Are you looking for a fun time and a different type of walk? Well, come out and join us for a fun time walking in Belleville's St. Pat's Day Parade. We will be handing out past patches to kids and free walk coupons for adults. We need "mules" to carry supplies and others to hand out the goodies. Last year we had about a dozen brave souls and it was a blast. We parked on the east end of Main street (on a side street) and walked to the west end of Main street where the parade starts. But whatever works for you. Lets plan to stop at one of the "watering holes" afterwards to have lunch. Check with Robin Latdrick for more details. We presold all the bags

4 prior to the event. The weather was poor, but enjoyment was high! The bus trip to KC, MO was also very successful. We walked Independence, MO, the KC Lights on the Plaza, and City Market. Shirley McKeon reported that Lady of the Snows Christmas event went well. We had about 225 walkers. The glow wrist bands were popular. NEW BUSINESS: UPCOMING WALKS: (1) Soup walk, February 26, Walk is from 9:00 12:00 and begins at Faith Lutheran Church in O Fallon. Please sign up to help work the walk. Belleville St. Patrick s parade is March 12, Walk starts on west end of Main Street and heads eastward. Robin Latdrick made a motion that our club participate in St. Patrick s walk. Second: Dee Wojtysiak Motion passed. The club will distribute a flyer with a coupon for a free Illinois Trekker walk to adults. Planning meeting was held on January 6. Three mile Thursday walks will begin in April and run through September. Each month the walks will be held at a different park. The walks begin at 6:30 p.m. Bus trip for 2011: If we go to Louisville, we cannot go on Labor Day weekend as many of the afternoon and evening activities planned for the trip are not open this weekend. A Louisville trip would need to be in August. If we decide to still have a trip over Labor Day weekend a new location will need to be selected.
