1 ILLINOIS TREKKERS FOOTNOTES NO January 2013 President: Leonard Wojtysiak President: Debbie Kruep Vice President: Cindy Stucky Secretary: Lois LaFleur Treasurer: Jack McKeon Directors-at-Large Directors-at-Large Rob Pilkington Bill Badger Nikki Wilcoxen Membership Dues It is that time of year again for us to pay our membership dues! Please send your payment to our club address or pay at our January meeting. It's time to pay and so little money with a lot of benefits! Written by Leonard Wojtysiak A Message from the President As we head into 2013 I invite you to join us at our January meeting. Start the new year off by becoming involved in the club. We have a great year planned. There are still opportunities for you to settle in and enjoy your fellow club members. At our first meeting we will focus on our Saturday group walks, discussion of three mile Thursdays, some opportunities we have for 2014, ways to improve what we are doing along with whatever you would like to bring to the table. Illinois Trekkers wants you! Gingerbread Cookie Walk Wrap-Up December eighth the Gingerbread Cookie Walk celebrated its fifth year. Five hundred and sixty walkers celebrated with us! I couldn t have asked for better weather. We sold 400 cookie bags and had people from eleven states. One lady came all the way from California and was decked out in gingerbread from head to toe. Thank you to everyone who delivered cookies, set up, tore down and worked on walk day. It takes a bit of coordinating to pull off this walk but when you see all the smiling faces, a warm feeling comes over you. I love that feeling. As most of you know I never set out to make this a walk that would be repeated each year. But it has become tradition to many people and I guess we will continue to have it yearly as long as we are able to pull it together and participation is well received. Cookies.who would have thought! Catch Us In Kentucky As of this writing we have thirty-three travelers. We have reached our goal, so a bus it will be! Please feel free to tell all your friends. Now that we have enough people to reserve a bus we can take up to fifty walkers. You will be receiving a confirmation via after the holidays. Welcome aboard, Kentucky here we come. Jefferson City Day Trip March 23, 2013 we will once again be teaming up with one of our sister clubs Clay-Platte Trackers from Kansas City, this time in Jefferson City, Missouri. They will travel by train. We have the option to travel by train or caravan by car. If you would like to travel by train, the cost is $40 round trip. Amtrak leaves Union Station at 9:15am arriving in Jefferson City at 11:36am. You may also pick up the train in Kirkwood, Mo if that is easier for you. All trains will arrive by 11:45am and we will start walking from the front of the Capital building. From 3-5pm we will have a private two hour tour ($12) of the Missouri State Penitentiary. This tour looks quite interesting. If you would like to have more information, visit their website After the tour we will have dinner and be finished in time to board our train at 7:03pm. All train tickets may be purchased on the Amtrak website. Everyone will purchase their own tickets. If you would like to drive or would like to ride with someone, please contact me (debmarkkruep@yahoo.com) and I will try to place you. If you are interested in this trip, please come to a meeting to sign up or me at the above address. More information will become available on our website as the date draws closer.
2 Idita-Walk 2013 Over the years the Idita-Walk has given volkssporters an extra incentive to walk during the colder winter months. Even if you don t dare to venture to the out of doors if the temperature dips below thirty degrees you can still have an incentive to keep walking! Sign up for the Idita-Walk. Walk for an average of thirty minutes per day for thirty-five days and keep track on the Idita-Walk website between February 1 and March 31,2013 for a total of 1049 minutes (any combination of minutes and days will work-just reach 1049 minutes during the 59 day event ). You can walk anywhere, outside, inside, at the mall, on the track at the Y or in place in front of your television while watching your favorite show. The Idita-Walk promotes physical fitness in the spirit of the Iditarod Sled Dog Race. The Iditarod Sled Dog Race is 1049 miles long beginning at Anchorage, Alaska and finishing in Nome, Alaska. There is a small fee to participate. Go to www. idita-walk.com to register. All proceeds go to Camp Bronson maintenance, scholarships, and youth related programs in Nome, Alaska. Photo Contest I see everyone carrying their cameras throughout the year. I know there are some really great pictures floating out there. During every convention there is a photo contest. I do believe there is a budding photographer somewhere in our club that can find a terrific photo to submit for the contest. The three categories are people, places or things. The photo must be 8x10 and mounted on foam board. You must also include an electronic file on a PC-formatted CD ROM. Please bring your photo to the January meeting. I will be happy to mount it for you. If you cannot attend the meeting, please get it to me by January 15 th. Reprinted from AVA Checkpoint Format Your Article(s) The American Wander has a neat article on how to format articles sent to them. To make it easier for all of us I want to use the same format so if we want to forward one of our newsletter articles it will all ready be in the format they want! Below is a re-print of their article. I have switched all the fonts etc. in this newsletter to match their requirements. The only "problem" I had was I do not have Times font loaded on my computer. So please try to use their format when writing your articles but don't worry if you don't because I will check it as need be. Thanks Note: GW = Group Walk GS = Girl Scout
3 How to format your article for TAW DON'T! Submissions come in to TAW with all kinds of formatting... all of which are totally unneeded! Every submission to TAW is reformatted into two type styles... the headlines and the text. Any other styles are not used except possibly in special "ads" to get your attention. DO! When you type your submission to TAW, do this: Type in Times font Single space between lines Only hit the return key between paragraphs. No tabs or indents. Double space between paragraphs. Only one space between a period and the next sentence. Keep your submissions to 500 words. (See word count info below.) Do not put your photo in the document attach it separately to your .
