1 ILLINOIS TREKKERS FOOTNOTES NO July 2011 President: Leonard Wojtysiak Vice President: Debbie Kruep Secretary: Cindy Stucky Treasurer: Jack McKeon IT Database Manager, Gary Staley Meridian Gardens & Peacock Farm Come join us on Saturday July 9 th. We will be visiting Meridian Gardens. Meridian Gardens is a private residence in Dorsey, Illinois, just a short drive north of Edwardsville. Debbie Gray and Marie Johnson have been growing hundreds of Day Lilies for many years. If you think the yellow ones you see at every bank are the only kind of daylily out there, you need to come and see for yourself! We will also visit Peacock Farm a bit further down the road. This is an old farm that has been turned in to a beautiful country estate. You will meet Don Peacock, a wonderful southern gentleman who transformed the homestead where Debbie Gray actually grew up. They have extended their hospitality to us. I have learned from last July s Hummingbird walk. The start point is air-conditioned. We will have several water stops. The checkpoints will have snow cones or watermelon so everyone will stay cool. Remember you may start as early as 7:30am if you wish to beat the heat. You may order or purchase daylilies from Meridian Gardens. If you would like to look them up on line prior to the walk, the address iswww.meridian-gardens.com Thoughts for 2012 Put on your thinking caps! 2012 will be here before you know it. Let s get prepared to have some great walks. This will take all of us. Bring your ideas to the planning meeting at 6:00pm before the regular monthly meeting on July 7 th at Faith Lutheran Church. Please consider coming and being part of the process. No idea is too small or too large. We will be brainstorming! 2011 Walking Convention What a bunch of super walks and very interesting business meetings! Plus there were some great Workshops to attend. I nicknamed it the "Water Convention". Directors-at-Large Tom Stucky Rob Pilkington Trudy Duffman We walked across Iowa starting in Council Bluffs and ending in Davenport/Rock Inland, IL. Just getting to Council Bluffs we had to detour off I-29 to drive around the flooding. Then on the first day it rained so the park walk was all mud until about noon when it dried up somewhat. Sunday it rained early again so that walk was wet for us early birds. Flooding in Des Moines, flooding in Rock Inland, you get the picture! But just think of the nightmare the clubs went through to get the trails marked. But they did a fair/good job marking the trails and every walk had interesting things to see. I could see that the walks were designed to show off Iowa because if you are like me and think Iowa is just a big farm state with nothing much to see; boy was I wrong. Now I want to go back to see some more of the tourist stuff. I attend six Workshops with two of them being outstanding, two good, and two I wished I had attended a different one. I will talk more about the two outstanding workshops at our meeting. The business meetings went well with a couple of surprises. One surprise was being able to stamp our event book every time we walk as long as we have paid our fee; it passed. The other was having two people to vote for in each officer position (except one). It caused quite a stir with each candidate campaigning to get elected. Our club had three of our four officers at the convention so we talked over our voting options as we learned more about the political climate (we had 10 club members attend walks). The social events were wonderful starting with "everything on a stick" social Tuesday. Thursday dinner and square dance was a blast with yours truly caught carrying a purse (not mine really) and our group dancing the night away. Friday night dinner wrapped up the convention part of our week with Dee and I setting at the Mid- America table. So we went out with a splash, I guess.

2 Written By Leonard Wojtysiak Mascoutah Ice Cream June 4 was another hot day but refreshing with the variety of ice cream served by the merchants. Even one of the checkpoints served lemonade and snacks. The trail had been modified from previous years which were enjoyed by 94 walkers. The winner of the Ice Cream Contest was Flowers, Balloons, Etc. The ice cream creation was titled "Life's a Beach". Many thanks to Bee Hollow Market and the Illinois Trekker volunteers helping to make this walk enjoyable for all. Written by Dee Wojtysiak 3 Mile Thursdays Our 3 mile Thursdays are continuing in another new park this month. Check our Walk alerts for time and location. See you there!
