Volume 20 Issue 3 July - September 2018 Message from the President Hello again! Now that it s hot, we ve suspended our club walks, but remember that there are still ways to get out and stay active: walk early or late; do a 5km instead of a 10km; use a rec center or gym track. If you re walking outdoors don t forget water and a sun block. Stay safe and we ll see you in September. Congratulations to your club Officers who were elected for a two-year term at the June business meeting: President Al Korejwo; Vice-President Carl Cordes; Secretary Smith Reeves; Treasurer Brenda Harris. We re in the process of sanctioning our walks for next year. This involves checking our existing walks, making any changes, and sending them in for approval. This is also the time to think about any new walks we might want to put on the schedule. If you have a favorite route you follow and think it might be a good candidate for a walk, let any of the officers know. Instead of Sizzlin Summer Strolls, this year we ve started a new program called Sizzlin Summer Swims. Details are inside. the convention site. If you re looking to beef up your event books or want to see a different part of the USA, this is a great opportunity. More information is available on the AVA website. When you go out of town on vacation, be sure to look at the AVA website for walks near your destination. You ll probably find something nearby. Clubs work hard to design interesting walks, and they re a great way to learn about an area. Happy trails! Al Korejwo, President The 2019 AVA Convention is scheduled for June in Albany, NY. Ask the concierge for the walk box between 7am and 7 pm. If the box is not at the desk in the lobby, it will be in their office. The walking program was explained to Ben head concierge? who was impressed. Downtown LV Walk: The parking garage (where we would park for the DTLV walk) now charges a $5.00 fee for non-nevada vehicles. Also, there's ongoing construction on I-15 that might affect your normal trip, so allow a little extra time. Check our website for more information. Sizzlin' Summer Swims: Here's a chance to earn a free walk coupon, good for any of our YREs. Rather than do the walks as we have in past summers, we're giving you a different option: Simply complete three swim events this Summer (June, July and August) - not three swims per month, but three swims in toto. Easy and fun! When you register for the swim, be sure to put the date and "SSS" on the start envelope. Check the website for more info about registration and the location of the swim. LVHRS Strolling on the Interstate: By Carl Cordes On June 2 nd 335 people walked or biked a section of the new Interstate 11 in Boulder City including four Las Vegas High Rollers and Strollers. Boulder City invited community members to walk or bicycle on the interstate before it opens to traffic, which Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada expects in the first week of August. The majority of locals were on bikes for a stretch from Buchanan Blvd to an overlook at Lake Mead. Brenda, Michelle, Gracie and I stayed grounded and walked the 5K route. We received several compliments for our matching club shirts, too. While we won t have a future Year-round walk on Interstate 11 you can still do our permanent walks in Boulder City or Lake Mead/Hoover Dam and just use the Interstate to drive there.
