2 President s Message Winter arrived in full force in the Carolinas with brutal force. The snow was beautiful but being without heat and electricity for three and a half days in Tryon was a challenge. On the positive side the new snow was a welcome addition to the man made snow at the North Carolina ski areas. Members that attended the Crescent Ski Council week in Steamboat report that Steamboat had the best snow ever this year. All had a wonderful time and several earned top NASTAR medals. Crescent race season opened at Appalachian Ski Mountain. Kevin and I represented Spartanburg and both scored second place in our flights. More of our racers plan to compete in the upcoming Sugar Mountain race. Can you believe the Spartanburg Ski Club has been around for 50 years? It s true and we are planning a big fiftieth celebration this fall. We are also encouraging lots of members to attend the Crescent fiftieth anniversary at the Spring Convention in Myrtle Beach April Room deposit checks should be made out to SCOC and given to or mailed to Carol McCall at 185 Thoroughbred Lane, Tyron, NC Contact her about amount and due date at Think Snow, Mark Page 2

Alison Dear SSOC members, The board would like to thank each of you that helped make our toy drive for Safe Homes a HUGE success. We donated items for every age group and we had a HUGE load of items for the moms. The red wagon couldn't even begin to hold it all so a grocery cart was filled as well. Safe Homes was thrilled with our club's generosity. On a personal note, I would like to say thank you to everyone in our club who continue to be so generous. 5 *** Mini Social Re-Cap For The Year *** What a great year we had for mini-socials!! Attendance always seemed to be really good don t know if it was the restaurant that was the draw, or if people were just hungry and love to eat! No matter regardless, it is always a pleasure to see such good participation in our club activities. On the list this past year no duplicates: Palmetto Grille, Los Cabos, Soulisa s Thai Dining, Hickory Tavern, Kanpai of Tokyo, Grapevine Restaurant, The Smokehouse, Two Samuels, Gerhard s & Caro-Mi. Which one was your favorite? Just a FYI Kanpai was the best attended with 30 members there! Let s see 2019 continue with lots of sign-ups for all these restaurants in our future. Alison Page 5

8 NOTES Any Spartanburg Ski Club member may submit items for publication in the newsletter. Publication deadlines can be found on the pullout calendar included in the newsletter each month. Call Taylor for information on how to submit your newsletter item. Also, don t forget - the club has a tent available for rent. It is an 18 X 20 tent, and it is easy to assemble. We also have 4 tables that can be rented with or without the tent. We have the makings for that special occasion and it is all very reasonably priced! Tent rental is $ 35. Tables can be rented for $5 per table. Remember; don t have a party without the comfort of shade. Your guests will appreciate it and so will the club! For rentals of either tent or tables contact Joy Bobo. The Spartanburg Ski & Outing Club normally meets the first Thursday of each month at 7:00 PM. We are located at the Chapman Cultural Center (West Wing) on East St. John Street in Spartanburg on the first floor. During the summer months (June, July, and August) meetings are frequently held, more informally, at different sites and times. Therefore it is necessary to consult the club web site or a current newsletter for the time and location. April s meeting is held at the Piedmont Club. The club does not provide alcoholic beverages at membership meetings, but members are allowed to bring their own (BYOB) choices of beer or wine. Over-indulgence is not condoned under any circumstances. Cups, ice, and some soft drinks are provided. Thank you.
