President s Page - August Someone recently asked me if SSOC was water skiing or snow skiing. I told them we were snow bunnies and had to add that I don t ski.

2 President s Page - August Someone recently asked me if SSOC was water skiing or snow skiing. I told them we were snow bunnies and had to add that I don t ski. That turned into a conversation about what we do besides skiing. If you look at our handout it names many of the activities that we often do: hike, dine out, go to shows and museums, boat, attend exhibits and sport events, music recitals, wineries, etc. If we haven t done it yet we probably will. Something that s not listed is the more intrinsic nature of the Club. It s an opportunity to build friendships. When new members come into our group they add new interests, ideas and values. Don t you know someone who could benefit from such a welcoming and fun-loving group? Invite them to any of our meetings or outings and they ll most likely thank you for it. This is how we ve evolved over the years and how we ll continue to grow. Pat Page 2

3 Upcoming Programs: Saturday 8/5/17: Lake Party at Conni & Ted s home Please bring a dish to share as well as a serving utensil for your dish. We are welcome to arrive starting at 4:00pm. We will plan to have our meeting around 6:00pm and the meal will follow. Please bring your beverage of choice to enjoy up until 6:00pm when the club will provide drinks. Address: 280 Bertha Burns Drive Inman, SC Phone: Directions: Interstate 26 to Exit 5 (Highway 11) go East on Highway 11. There will be a 4 way stop in about 5 miles, go straight through the 4 way stop to continue on Highway 11 for about 1 mile. Turn right on Bertha Burns Drive (there will be a yellow & black old peach shed in that area). House number is 280. Thursday 9/7/17: Membership Renewal Meeting at Lake Bowen Landing At 6:00pm, we will have a brief meeting under the pavilion and will serve hotdogs, chips and sodas. Members will have an opportunity to go for a lake ride on pontoon boats if they choose, or may socialize under the pavilion. Members may bring an appetizer to share either in the pavilion or on a boat. Remember to bring your membership renewals! We hope for great weather and look forward to seeing everyone there. Thursday 10/5/17: Beer Tasting We will be meeting back at the Chapman Cultural Center. We will sample some Oktoberfest beers and enjoy some German snacks. Thursday 11/2/17: Wine Tasting We would love to have some volunteers (6-8) to bring a favorite wine to share in this tasting. Please let me know if you would like to share a favorite wine as we start to plan this event. Many, many thanks to our members who have opened their homes to host our summer events! See you all soon! Those animals need food, care, and shelter until they are adopted. We have been able to make some great donations in the past. They still need our help.

4 August Mini Social Thursday, August 24 th at 6:30 pm... Huckleberry s in Tryon. Huckleberry s recently obtained their beer & wine license, so no brown bagging necessary! Please join us up in the quaint little mountain town for dinner. A sign-up sheet will be available at the August club meeting at Lake Bowen. Huckleberry s 62 N Trade St, Tryon, NC How many huckleberries do you know? Alison This time of year is critical for The Spartanburg Humane Society. So many animals of all ages need homes. Those animals need food, care, and shelter until they are adopted. We have been able to make some great donations in the past. They still need our help. Food, treats, beds, towels, and cleaning supplies are all greatly needed. They need Pedigree dog food, and any brand of cat food and kitten food. Bleach, towels, and kitten food are really needed at this time. Let's all make an effort to fill my red wagon at the August meeting at Ted and Conni's. See you there! Joy, Fundraising Page 4

5 Kayaking with the McCalls Saturday, August 19 th Lake Lanier Tryon, NC We are invited to kayak and canoe with Mark and Carol at their place on beautiful Lake Lanier. Meet at 9:30 AM at the Antique shopping center across from the Lake Lanier entrance. There is limited parking at Lake Lanier so we will need to carpool. If you have a kayak please being it. Mark and Carol have seven kayaks and three canoes for our use. Mark and Carol are graciously furnishing beer and wine. Please bring your own lunch and snacks and any other beverage you may want. Please let them know if you will be attending at or mmccall1@windstream.com. There will be a signup at our summer meeting at Conni and Ted s on August 5 th. Treasurer News The current balance in the treasury as of June 13 is $ The balance on May 17 was $ Ted Dear Ski Club members, I have such gratitude to Alison and all the volunteers for Music On Main. You may not know that I broke my arm, and am out of commission for a while. But that didn't faze our volunteers one bit. You all did not miss a beat, and we had an amazing MOM. You all showed up, worked, and from what I hear, a good time was had by all! Not to mention the tip jars! I am so proud of our group. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. She enjoys bakin and rump shakin, whipping up baked goods and dance moves like nobody s business.that s Cookie in a nutshell unless you re allergic to nuts in which case she can do the whole gluten free/dairy free mess, taking all the fun out of life. He learned everything he knows about Asheville from visitors and the chatty people at The Waffle House. The Nuns Asheville may have been called and may call itself the Cesspool of Sin, but it s also a deeply spiritual and religious community. (We didn t name a stretch of I-240 the Billy Graham Highway for nothing!) LaZoom, which revels in all things Asheville, is lucky enough to have been adopted by a renegade group of scooter nuns.so don t be surprised to see a holy water pistol-toting nun on a tall bike, or to have the City Tour bus boarded by Sister Bad Habit, Sister Sauerkraut, Sister Oo La La, Sister Harry Mary, Sister Mary Ravioli, Sister Deeee Licious, or Sister Bertha Better-Than-You. 16 NOTES Any Spartanburg Ski Club member may submit items for publication in the newsletter. Publication deadlines can be found on the pullout calendar included in the newsletter each month. Call Taylor for information on how to submit your newsletter item. Also, don t forget - the club has a tent available for rent. It is an 18 X 20 tent, and it is easy to assemble. We also have 4 tables that can be rented with or without the tent. We have the makings for that special occasion and it is all very reasonably priced! Tent rental is $ 35. Tables can be rented for $5 per table. Remember; don t have a party without the comfort of shade. Your guests will appreciate it and so will the club! For rentals of either tent or tables contact Joy Bobo. The Spartanburg Ski & Outing Club normally meets the first Thursday of each month at 7:00 PM. We are located at the Chapman Cultural Center (West Wing) on East St. John Street in Spartanburg on the first floor. During the summer months (June, July, and August) meetings are frequently held, more informally, at different sites and times. Therefore it is necessary to consult the club web site or a current newsletter for the time and location. April s meeting is held at the Piedmont Club. The club does not provide alcoholic beverages at membership meetings, but members are allowed to bring their own (BYOB) choices of beer or wine. Over-indulgence is not condoned under any circumstances. Cups, ice, and some soft drinks are provided. Thank you.
