2 President s Page - November If you were at our October meeting at the Chapman Cultural Center you couldn't help notice how we're outgrowing our room. That's a good problem because it means that more people are coming to the membership meetings. We've looked at holding the meetings at other locations, but we can't beat the great deal that we've got at CCC: we're grand-fathered in at a low fee, we get charged the same rate when we come back after our summer furlough and we're allowed to bring in alcoholic beverages. This being said, we need to make some improvisations to ensure that everyone is able to handle their food and drink and still mingle. We're going to see if moving the furniture a little and making some other adjustments will use the space better. Although it's not permanent, we'll be able to have our November and December meetings in the room next to the ticket office in the same building. It's a couple hundred square feet bigger so that should help with the problem for a couple of months. We're not too cramped to invite a friend or neighbor that's leading a dull life and could benefit from getting out and socializing. There's bound to be one of our activities that they might want to do and they'll also have a great group of people to do it with. See you soon, Pat Page 2

Our fun will begin about 6:30 and you know the game plan. A sign up sheet will be available at the November meeting. 6 Activities Update Our trip to Riverbanks Zoo was rained out. We will reschedule for early spring. For those that purchased tickets on line they are good for any day for one year from the date of purchase. Upcoming special events: December-Holiday party with Joy Bobo as hostess January-Greenville Swamp Rabbits hockey game with pre-game brunch at Soby s February-Monarch Café- Unwine and Dine. 7 From all of us on the SSOC board we say: THANK YOU!!! We may be small, but we are mighty! These last five months you have been so generous to our charities. We have taken FIVE "loads of love" plus $70 in donations from individuals to the Spartanburg Humane Society. They have been thrilled, and thankful for our help! Our other charity, St Luke's Free Medical clinic, received a total of $400 from us in September. This is money raised through raffles as well as money dropped in "the box". It also included a few folks who wrote checks to St Luke's that are tax deductible for them. They too were thrilled. These figures are amazing people! I am so proud of our club. We are a devoted group that is making a difference in our community. Thank you everyone, Joy Page 7

We have had an amazing response to our charities this fiscal year. Well, as we move from Summer to Fall, we also concentrate on another of our charities: Safe Homes Rape Crisis Center.

9 We have had an amazing response to our charities this fiscal year. Well, as we move from Summer to Fall, we also concentrate on another of our charities: Safe Homes Rape Crisis Center. Did you know that SC is one of the worst states as far as domestic violence? Did you know there is an increase in domestic violence during the holidays? We have an amazing organization here in Spartanburg. The Safe Homes Rape Crisis Center does education, counseling, and offers HOPE for those that have been assaulted. We are now taking items for Safe Homes. The items are varied. Check out the list located in this newsletter. We try to support the Safe Home itself, as well as the rape crisis closets in three hospitals. This is a massive undertaking that we can help with. 14 NOTES Any Spartanburg Ski Club member may submit items for publication in the newsletter. Publication deadlines can be found on the pullout calendar included in the newsletter each month. Call Taylor for information on how to submit your newsletter item. Also, don t forget - the club has a tent available for rent. It is an 18 X 20 tent, and it is easy to assemble. We also have 4 tables that can be rented with or without the tent. We have the makings for that special occasion and it is all very reasonably priced! Tent rental is $ 35. Tables can be rented for $5 per table. Remember; don t have a party without the comfort of shade. Your guests will appreciate it and so will the club! For rentals of either tent or tables contact Joy Bobo. The Spartanburg Ski & Outing Club normally meets the first Thursday of each month at 7:00 PM. We are located at the Chapman Cultural Center (West Wing) on East St. John Street in Spartanburg on the first floor. During the summer months (June, July, and August) meetings are frequently held, more informally, at different sites and times. Therefore it is necessary to consult the club web site or a current newsletter for the time and location. April s meeting is held at the Piedmont Club. The club does not provide alcoholic beverages at membership meetings, but members are allowed to bring their own (BYOB) choices of beer or wine. Over-indulgence is not condoned under any circumstances. Cups, ice, and some soft drinks are provided. Thank you.
