2 President s Corner We had an awesome turnout for the September meeting, and you guys all did great on the food. A+. Jan and Pat did an excellent job setting and cleaning it up, and of course there were Mike and Barbara, our grill masters. Delicious! Thank you everyone! GROUP efforts make my life so much easier. Lots of membership renewals have been turned in, but there are still a few of you out there that need to get on the ball, it s not too late to join, but you need to hurry or you ll miss out on so much to do. And without that membership you won t get all the news or the reminders. October? Who knew it would arrive so quickly? This is the time to be getting your skis and legs in shape for winter sports. As usual, we (and by that I mean Sam and Mark) are looking for racers to represent our club again. Novices accepted with open arms. Not all of us ski, so we ve also got some hikes and other festivities for the rest of us this fall. Pat has us eating at Delaney s this month, and a few other activities are in the making. A Monday night in October is a historical presentation at Magnolia Cemetery. Also, a play, and another hike soon. The Crescent Fall Conference is in Gatlinburg at the end of the month, and everyone is invited. Just bring a desire for adventure and fun. Not to mention the hiking, shopping and sightseeing and party/dinner on Saturday night. And one last item for those of you who are into Facebook, you can now friend Crescent Ski Council. 3 OKTOBERFEST SKI CLUB STYLE October Membership Meeting 2012 This month we will kick off Oktoberfest with a beer tasting at the Chapman Cultural Center at 7 PM. Please bring 3 4, 12 oz. bottles of your favorite beer, a German beer, but preferably a NEW beer we may not have tasted. We ll all do a little sampling after our quick announcements and the club will furnish a few snacks to go along. Viel Spass zum Oktoberfest! Conni Harrell, President, SSOC October Mini Delaney's Irish Pub is the next stop on our mini social circuit. The date is Tuesday October 16, the time 6:30. Owner Kevin Moore has recently reopened the pub after some upgrades and expansions in menu, spirits and decor. Delaney's offers over 25 different beers. 4 COME AND VISIT THE INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL Saturday, October 6, AM-7 PM The City of Spartanburg does an excellent job presenting this event. I am still looking for a 2-3 volunteers for the International Festival. This won t take more than a couple of hours of your time, and the more volunteers we have the less time each will have to work, so come on out and volunteer and visit the festival. Switzerland is the honored country this year, and I believe we may know at least one of them from the Alpine country. Call me at , I need your help. Conni Harrell, President, SSOC LASER PRINTER FOR SALE As you all know by now the club has purchased a new laser printer that prints in color. That means that our old (black & white) printer, an HP 2300d, is being retired. The d in its designation means that it can print duplex which means that it can print on both sides of the paper without having to print one side then put the paper back into the printer to print the other side. Additionally, it not only does this with letter size paper (8 ½ * 11,) it will also do so on legal size paper (8 ½ * 14.) The printer is in good shape and has only experienced light duty around pages per month. The asking price is $125. It will come with a partially used toner cartridge. (These usually run around $130 so for your $125 I think this is a good deal.) Taylor Page 4

5 MAGNOLIA CEMETERY TOUR Monday October 22, 2012 Did you know we have a Spartanburg Historical Museum? Yep, it s right inside our own Chapman Cultural Center. Not all artifacts will fit inside a museum so this particular night there will be a presentation at the historic downtown cemetery located near the train depot. It is across the tracks on Magnolia St. There will be reenactments in which citizens represent the dead and tell their stories, and history, of Spartanburg and the cemetery which dates back to pre Civil War. The Spartanburg County Historical Association charges no fee, but donations are welcome. So come and join in and learn a little starting at 7 PM. Those nasty summer bugs should be gone by then. Please let me know if you plan to attend as the SCHA would like a head count. I know as a long time resident here, I still have lots to learn about our history, so come and join me. 8 MOONLIGHT AND MAGNOLIAS Sounds romantic doesn t it? Would you believe it s a comedy being presented by our own Spartanburg Little Theatre at the Chapman Cultural Center? It s a story hilariously telling the behind-the-scenes business of movie making during the golden era of Hollywood. David Selznick has a problem with the script and fires the director. Then the story has to be rewritten in 5 days! It s a madcap look inside movie making. Sunday, November 11, PM Tickets will be $20.00 for a group rate. Contact me, and join me for this humorous event. 9 ROAN MOUNTAIN WEEKEND Jan 31- Feb 3,2013 The Club has reserved 4 cabins at Roan Mountain State Park (Tenn) again this year for the first weekend in February, The good news: we will be getting the newer cabins this season! These have 2 double beds in the loft, a double in the downstairs bedroom, 1 ½ baths, and full kitchen. Prices are: $126.23/weekday and $ per day, weekends. The Park will most likely run a winter promotion with buy one, get one free. Stay tuned. Mark and Sammy are working with Kim at Sugar Mountain on having the Club Race there on Saturday, Feb 2 nd. 13 Race Corner Soon summer is over and cooler temperatures are moving in; and we go outside working in the garden or even a walk in the neighborhood. Yes, it is time to get in shape and ready for our Winter Activities! Let s get out in our Appalachian mountains for hiking and enjoying the lush colors of fall. At the end of August we went Blueberry picking and the bushes were in vigorous grow providing tons of berries this year. Crescent will meet in Gatlinburg, TN for the Fall Conference October 26-28, 2012; we always have a fun weekend with sightseeing, parties and hikes through the colorful mountains. Or would you like to sign up for an early Winter Race and Ski Camp in Steamboat, Co? If that is to far West, we will have a Race Camp at Sugar Mt. NC on Dec 7-9. 16 NOTES Any Spartanburg Ski Club member may submit items for publication in the newsletter. Publication deadlines can be found on the pullout calendar included in the newsletter each month. Call Taylor for information on how to submit your newsletter item. Also, don t forget - the club has a tent available for rent. It is an 18 X 20 tent, and it is easy to assemble. We also have 4 tables that can be rented with or without the tent. We have the makings for that special occasion and it is all very reasonably priced! Tent rental is $ 35. Tables can be rented for $5 per table. Remember; don t have a party without the comfort of shade. Your guests will appreciate it and so will the club! For rentals of either tent or tables contact Joy Bobo. The Spartanburg Ski & Outing Club normally meets the first Thursday of each month at 7:00 PM. We are located at the Chapman Cultural Center (West Wing) on East St. John Street in Spartanburg on the first floor. During the summer months (June, July, and August) meetings are frequently held, more informally, at different sites and times. Therefore it is necessary to consult the club web site or a current newsletter for the time and location. April s meeting is held at the Piedmont Club. The club does not provide alcoholic beverages at membership meetings, but members are allowed to bring their own (BYOB) choices of beer or wine. Over-indulgence is not condoned under any circumstances. Cups, ice, and some soft drinks are provided. Thank you.
