1 Waterline FLAFAYETTE SAILING CLUB VOLUME COMMODORE S MESSAGE Happy New Year everyone! We have the holidays behind us and I am sure that everyone is looking forward to another season of sailing. January and February are tough months for Indiana sailors. The weather is cold and the water is hard, so daydream with me. The Strictly Sail Show in Chicago, January at Navy Pier will take your mind off of the cold winter. A lot of Club members attend and enjoy being around sailboats that are both small and large. For sailors that have never been to this show it is INSIDE and WARM! In March; a winter (cruise) or just a gathering of Club members will be held in sunny Florida! Just drive, sail, or fly to Punta Gorda. Bill and Donna Muir own a nice place, with canal access to Charlotte Harbor. We may sail with the boats that show or just have a fun picnic, Nothin but Warm Fun When we make it to April; we have the Club Ice Breaker Race Series, the Spring Call Out, and the harbor clean up day. The Call Out will be Friday, April 15, 6pm, At The Sportsman Inn Cottage, Monticello, IN. Please bring a friend, neighbor, or anyone interested in sailing. We will help them learn to sail. May has the Club Ice Breaker Race Series finishing, a sailing school, Monday, May 2 nd and a Moonlight Picnic & Sail, Friday, May 13, 7:30pm. June is very busy with Club races, raft ups (in the secret cove), the Past Commodore s Picnic, and a mini cruise to Lake Mississinewa. The month of July has fireworks, more Club racing, a moonlight sail & picnic, and the Club Summer Cruise to the Mackinac Island area. August has me looking forward to more sailing, the BOG picnic, warm water, etc. You know the sailing season will be fun and I hope this message has taken your mind off the long cold winter that we have to endure. Looking forward to seeing you all, Kirk 1
2 MISSISSINEWA SUMMER SOLSTICE MINI-CRUISE: 2011 by Ray Justice It is time to make your camping reservations at Mississinewa reservoir and campground. The cruise is scheduled for June 24th, 25th, & 26th, which is a great time of the year to camp. The nights are usually warm and the days hot and sunny. With almost 18 hours of daylight at this time of year we should have some great early morning and late afternoon sailing. We can stay in the shade, drink refreshments, eat lunch, and take a nap during the middle of the day. With the moon in its last quarter the night sky should be beautiful. There is no housing buildup around the lake so there is very little light pollution when you are sailing or anchored out in one of the many coves at night. You should make your reservations very soon because late June is a popular time to camp and the camping spots are going fast. I made my reservations for tent site # 454 on December 28th and some of the spots were already reserved. I am in loop B of the back campground and my tent will be directly across the road from where it was last year. I have reservations from June 23rd through June 29th in case any of you want to come over early and stay into the next week. There are many things to see in the area and some of you may want to plan a week of vacation. Everybody enjoying vegetable soup around the campfire 2
3 Kirk Gilbert has electric site # 372 reserved on the back cul-de-sac and we will use this site as a central gathering place. Another party in our group has site # 371 reserved next to Kirk but there are no sites left on the cul-de-sac. There are other electric sites in other areas but you need to get your reservations in ASAP to assure you get a reservation. The tent sites are $11.73 per day, electric sites $25.50 and they have cabins for $37.45 per day. All are two-day minimums on weekends with a maximum stay of two weeks on any site. Several reasonably priced motels are within 10 miles of the lake. Others may want to leave their boat and commute. The lake is only 54 miles from the LSC Harbor. Reservations can be made online at camp.in.gov or by calling If you have questions that need an immediate answer please feel free to or call me at ( cell). Watch for more details in future issues of the Newsletters. Let s all plan on going and having a great time. LSC Sailing School: 2011 The LSC Sailing School will feature Sailing for Beginners, Small Boat Racing, and Capsize Recovery this year. Students are encouraged to stay for the scheduled race at 1:00PM. Bring a picnic lunch. Both sessions will be RSVP. Library room limit is 30 students.
