jtàxüä Çx LAFAYETTE SAILING CLUB VOLUME A Message from the Commodore by James Miller Hi. I m James Miller, and I m Commodore of the Lafayette Sailing Club for I d like to tell you about the upcoming year. This promises to be a great year. The Club will benefit from having a core of experienced leaders. B.O.G. Let me introduce the Board of Governors, starting with the flag officers. Lee Kreul will be the Vice Commodore, and he will continue as our Cruise Director. Lee will eventually take over the Membership Chairman s job, but not until later in the year. Corie Shaner will continue as our Secretary/Treasurer. Kevin Bachelder is now our Recording Secretary, and will serve as an Assistant Cruise Director. The rest of the Board of Governors is filled with equally experienced and capable individuals. Art Lenaerts is returning as our Grounds Chairman. Dan Cserep is returning as the Assistant Grounds Chairman, and will also handle our Ship s Stores. Bill Muir is returning as the newsletter publisher, and Randy Carie is staying on to become the newsletter editor. Lewie Wallace will be in charge of the Club Fleet, and will organize the Sailing School. There are three members who are new to the B.O.G. this year. The first is Steve Titolo, who will be our Race Chairman. Chuck Wiltfong is joining the group as our Social Chairman. And, Kirk Gilbert is returning to the B.O.G. as our Publicity Chairman. When I said that we have a core of experienced leaders, I wasn t kidding. Consider this: Steve Titolo, Lewie Wallace, Kirk Gilbert, and Randy Carie are all past Commodores. Steve is also a four-time past Club racing champion. What s Coming Up: Mark your calendar for the Chicago Strictly Sail on February 1-4, If you haven t ever gone to this show, you really should go and see what you ve been missing. If you would like to attend, but aren t sure how to go about it, e- mail me. Also, if you re a cruiser, be aware that it will soon be time to make reservations for the Club cruise in July. This year it s Grand Traverse Bay, July 21-28, Nancy and I have done the Club cruise for the last five years now, and believe me it s not to be Jim Miller, Commodore 2007 Randy Carie: Editor Bill Muir: Publisher Inside this issue: THE CHICAGO STRICTLY SAIL BOAT SHOW THE LSC ICE-BREAKER SERIES ANNOUNCING THE LSC WINTER CRUISE THE PARTICIPATING MEMBERS REWARD PROGRAM: COMMITTEE WORK CREDIT OPPOR- TUNITIES 2007/2008 PARTICIPAT- ING MEMBERS' REWARD PROGRAM THE PARTICIPATING MEMBERS REWARD PROGRAM BUY/TRADE/SELL 6 FROM THE GALLEY 6 LSC FALL AND WINTER 2006 RECAP CALENDAR OF EVENTS 8 LSC MEMBERSHIP APPLI- CATION AND RENEWAL FORM ANNOUNCING THE LSC GRAND TRAVERSE BAY CRUISE LSC BOARD OF GOVER- NORS

jtàxüä Çx Message from the Commodore (Continued) GET THAT BOAT READY AND BREAK OUT THAT FOUL WEATHER GEAR missed. Just contact one of the cruise organizers (Randy Carie or Kirk Gilbert) and let them know that you re thinking about it Schedule: There s a whole lot more to consider. The schedule is part of this newsletter, so find it and mark your wall calendar with all the important dates for races, raft-ups, mini-cruises, picnics, harbor clean-ups, banquets, etc. LSC Member Handbook: You got one of these recently, didn t you? Now I want you to sit down and read it, at least once. It contains just about everything you need to know about the Lafayette Sailing Club. Participating Members Reward Program: This is a brand new program, just approved last fall. In a nutshell, it will save you $100 on a Full Membership next year (2008). It may look complicated but if you marked your calendar like I asked you to do (see above), then you will find this to be easy. The real goal of this program is to motivate you to become more involved in the Club s activities. If you do that, you ll have more fun and that s our motto: NOTHIN BUT FUN The Chicago Strictly Sail Show. The Chicago Strictly Sail Show is scheduled for Thurs.- Sun., February 1-4, 2007 at the Navy Pier. Go to to learn more about the exhibits, seminar, displays, events, and ticket sales. If you are interested, but a little apprehensive, just inquire around the Club, I m sure other will be going and consider carpooling. The LSC Ice- Breaker Series Again, get that boat ready and break out all of that foul weather gear that you never use. The Ice-Breaker Series will be on Saturday, this year. The traditional Captains meeting will be at 12:30 PM as marked on the LSC 2007 Schedule. The Ice-Breaker Series is a no-points race, but is an excellent series for fine tuning your sailing skills. I look forward to seeing you on the Lake in April. Page 2

Volume Announcing the LSC Winter Cruise by Randy Carie It s time to get the boat off the hard. The LSC Winter Cruise is set for March 16-20, Friday-Tuesday, on Lake Carlyle, IL. Lake Carlyle, IL is roughly a 5 hour drive from here, it s the largest man made lake in Illinois, boast 26,000 acres of water, is home to 3 modern marinas, and 3 Yacht Clubs. We ll be at the West Access Marina, Carlyle, IL. The marina amenities include a very nice clubhouse, electricity on the docks, marine store, plenty of parking, etc. Slip rental for transient sailors is $1.00 per foot. If you have a current Boat/US membership, there is a 25% discount or if you stay at one of our local hotels, you can have a 50% discount. Please reply to Randy Carie , or randycariec22@yahoo.com to learn more. Go to to learn more about this marina and Lake Carlyle. Itinerary Friday, March 16, depart from your home at your earliest convenience and set your course to Illinois. I ll be traveling south to Interstate 74, to Interstate 57, to Interstate ---, then south on RR127 and following the signs to West Access Marina. Upon arrival it s best to walk over to the office and check in. The office staff will assign slips and instruct you were to leave your tow vehicle and trailer. The next step is to get your boat rigged and in the water. I m not expecting everybody to arrive at the same time, so plan your day accordingly. I ll arrange for a grill to be available for our use. Dinner will be at 6pm. Saturday, March 17, 2007 Early morning breakfast in the clubhouse. The clubhouse has a coffee maker, two full size electric stoves, microwaves, and plenty of seating. We ll set sail ASAP, and sail to our hearts content. Lunch will be served while sailing or at the Captains discretion. The two marinas at the other end of the lake will have space available for docking and visiting. We ll rendezvous at the West Access Marina after a long day of sailing and fire up the grill again for supper. The movie night tradition will continue with a showing of Captain Ron after dinner. Sunday and Monday, March 18-19, 2007 Captains, discretion. Some will decide to stay for the day, other might decide to prep for travel back home. Tuesday, March 20, 2007, an early morning breakfast followed by a quick sail, and retuning to the marine for preparations to begin traveling back home. If you think that this might be an ideal cruise for yourself and family, please reply. More than likely this will be the perfect time to use all of that foul weather gear that you have and don t use. Last year we were sailing in degree weather, but then snow did come in on Monday and we had to cut the trip short. The only thing that will stop the Winter Cruise is snow or ice on the road. Lots of Water, Nothin' But Fun! Page 3 IF YOU HAVE A CURRENT BOAT U.S. MEMBERSHIP, THERE IS A 25% DISCOUNT AT THE MARINA, OR A 50% DISCOUNT AT A LOCAL HOTEL

"THE BEST THING THAT A CLUB MEMBER CAN DO IS, GET ON A COMMITTEE jtàxüä Çx The Participating Members Reward Program Work Credit Opportunities These particular projects can be done through the Winter months and not affect your sailing time in the Summer. The doors on the Club Bulletin board need to be repaired. The doors need to be removed, glued with all weather glue, and reassembled in the Spring. The three Club boats that make up the Club Fleet need maintenance. The Zuma has a separated seam at the stern that is allowing water to penetrate the watertight compartment. The BOG needs a Club member to take the boat home for the Winter and store it in a garage to dry it out first. Then we need help from another Club member to patch the seam. The Club will provide the equipment for the repairs. The Club Sunfish also needs to be taken to a garage for winter storage. The boat has taken on water, via a crack, and absorbed about 20 lbs of water. Once the boat is thoroughly dry inside the watertight compartment, repairs will be made. The Zuma and Sunfish are good boats for the Club. Every effort is being made to keep them in good working condition for Club members to enjoy. The Club needs a Web-Master. This would be a good opportunity for a Club Member to step up and take on a little responsibility and earn credits. It just takes time. The Club needs somebody that is proficient with e- bay. The Club parted out a gifted Hobie, and needs to sell the parts. The Club needs a member or members to run the Ships Store. An individual would be responsible for Michael Rossmann and Crew plant grass seed in bare spots Glen Katz and Rex Henthorn install new doors, made by Greg Shaner, on the shed Page 4 maintaining an inventory, displaying, and reporting all sales to the Club Secretary/Treasurer. The Club Newsletter Editors needs writers. Articles for publications are at the Editor discretion. The members looks forward to reading articles about sailing, sail trim, racing, boat repair, cooking, weather, history, Rules of the Road, flag etiquette, etc. The LSC Race Committee needs a statistician. The LSC Grounds and Equipment Committee will need assistance throughout the year for lawn and equipment maintenance.

jtàxüä Çx PARTICIPATING MEMBERS' REWARD PROGRAM The vitality, physical condition, and fiscal well being of the Club are enhanced by member participation. Members who participate on a regular basis may be eligible for a dues reduction. "Participating" for a dues reduction is defined as earning credits by taking part in a combination of social and sailing events, earning work credits for specified tasks, contributing merchandise for Club events and maintenance, and if necessary contributing additional funds to meet the minimum requirements. The prescribed minimum number of credits must be accumulated over a season (Club fiscal year) to qualify for a participation reduction on the following season's dues. New members will pay the reduced rate their first year, and may begin accruing credits for the following season during their first full year of membership. The Harbor Masters, Board of Governors (BOG), and non-bog Committee chairpersons will receive the minimum number of required credits for their services to the Club. Social and sailing activities are delineated on a provided form. The form also contains committee-specific blanks for work credits, and an area for contribution credits. Pre-scheduled Club-wide work sessions are included on the form, with dates and times listed in the yearly schedule, posted on the Club web site, and in the Club newsletter. Qualifying social, sailing, and work tasks are determined by committee chairs and the BOG, and posted on the Club web site and bulletin board. Committee chairs may be contacted directly for updates, special assignments, or to suggest tasks to the chair and receive pre-approval for credits. Special all-club work sessions may be scheduled if and when a need arises and advertised in a manner(s) deemed most effective by the BOG or committee chair. To confirm the credits you have earned you must check the boxes for social and sailing events attended, fill in the hours for BOG/ chairperson approved projects, and document any contributions of merchandise or cash on the provided form. You must total the credits and attach the completed form to the following season's membership application and check the "Participating Member" box on the application/renewal form. 7 Volume LSC 2006 Fall and Winter recap by Randy Carie The Harbor Cleanup and Chili Tasting Day, Oktoberfest, Frost-Bite Series, and Fall Banquet have past. The membership experienced good weather for the Harbor Cleanup and Chili Tasting day. The membership was productive and efficient. Numerous projects were completed. The Chili samples were exquisite. The Club is the better for the hard work and ready for The unpredictable weather and seasonal gusts isn t a bad thing when sailing, but can be a challenging thing when you are trying to start a fire. The Oktoberfest and Raft Up didn t fair as well with the Autumn winds. Cool crisp temperatures and gusting winds dampened the festivities, but not the spirits of the sailors. The Fishers provided the homely comforts to keep everybody comfortable. Bratwursts and sausages were cooked on a grill on the leeward side of the Fisher s house. The Frost-Bite series participants enjoyed diverse sailing conditions. From October to November the weather conditions can be challenging. I learned a new saying the other day. There isn t any such thing as bad weather, it s only inappropriate clothing. I used this to get me through the Frost Bite Series and had a couple of extra months of fun, on a sailboat, with friends. For only the second time in 2006 the LSC was scheduled to be inside a facility. The Fall Banquet offered a time for recognizing, nourishing, business, and camaraderie. LSC members had a very fine dinner, a new Club Champion, racers, cruisers, and outstanding individuals were recognized for their efforts. Congratulations to Dave Fisher, the LSC 2006 Club Champion. Quantity and quality helped make Dave the Club Champion. He didn t miss an event. Dave has set a high mark. It ll be fun to see his challengers in Congratulations to the many racers and cruisers that found the time to take the challenge. Congratulations to Bill Muir, the LSC Peterson Award recipient. Bill was instrumental in revitalizing and organizing the Ice-Breaker Series, Frost-Bite Series and Oktoberfest. Thanks Bill! The LSC now has an extra 3 months of sailing dates on its Schedule of Events. Congratulations to Art Lenaerts, the LSC Sportsperson of the Year Award 2006 recipient. Art was recognized for his unselfish efforts toward the LSC membership. Art has been such a good sport about crewing, assisting when necessary, and helping LSC sailors, both on and off the water. The business part of the Fall Banquet was lengthy but important. Traditional BOG material was presented and the membership present at the meeting voted to accept, after discussion, a new membership dues program. The Participating Members Reward Program Page 7 is the result of not only a year of work to finalize, but also the completion of efforts when the 2004 BOG revised the LSC By-Laws, and updated the LSC insurance policy. A new handbook will be distributed to the membership around the time of this publication. The BOG has been working selfishly to update the infrastructure of the Club, promote the LSC as a Club for sailors, and meet the objectives of the Club. The LSC is a strong Club with a lot of history and tradition. The membership is a part of that tradition. They re more than just a group of sailors havin Nothing but Fun. I d like to take this time to thank the membership for allowing me to wear the Commodore Cap in 2006, Thank you! I d like to thank the 2006 Board of Governors for all of their time and efforts. Good Job, Thank you! On behalf of the membership I d like to thank our Harbor Masters, Dave and Mary Kay Fisher, for allowing the LSC to be what it is today. Thank you! 11 Volume Announcing the LSC Grand Traverse Bay Cruise by Kirk Gilbert and Randy Carie When the great glacier gouged its way south some 10,000 years ago, it not only carved out the east and west arms of the bay, it also piled up an impressive sculpture of moraines and hills that give Grand Traverse its distinctive look. Northport, Suttons Bay, Elk Rapids and Traverse City make the big passage one not to pass by. The area offers metropolitan sophistication, small town charm, and great sailing. (Lake Michigan Ports O Call vol. 3 page 130) The LSC is returning to the Grand Traverse Bay Michigan waters on July 21-28, Cruise organizers are doing their best to keep everybody informed. It is time to start thinking about reservations. The first reservation to be made will be for Clinch Marina in Traverse City. We will stay there two days: Tuesday, July 24, and Wednesday, July 25. Reservations can be made 6 months in advance of these dates, which in our case means January 24 and 25 To get reservations, you can either call the Michigan customer support number: , or You will need your Indiana boat registration number the draft, beam, length, and name of your boat.
