Dues: $15 Single / $25 Couple tntharley.com Copyright 2010 River Roads HOG Chapter 0912 All Rights Reserved Greetings All: From the Director s Saddle Shawn Elkins Well June is here and we are finally getting a lot of opportunities to ride. The Chapters first overnight ride for the season will have happened by the time this newsletter hits the streets so I will have updates next month regarding the trip. Speaking of rides/trips you may be planning ones that you would like to take, so remember if you have ride ideas for either a day ride or overnight ride please let me know or any other Chapter officer so we can get them in schedule and on the calendar before this riding season is behind us or even for next year. You should have seen an with the Rider emergency form attached; if this is new to you I just wanted to take a couple of minutes to explain. This form was introduced last year to our chapter to better prepare ourselves for the Let's hope that by the time this reaches everyone you will have been able to put rubber to road for a good long ride! Our Annual LOH Poker Fun Run for Meals on Wheels is earlier on the calendar this year. It is coming up on Sunday June 13th. I know that everyone has received a flyer via so this is just a recap. The route is a scenic ride along the river in Illinois and Iowa. Sign up is at the TNT gaz e b o f r o m n o o n t o 1:30pm. Your first had is only $10 and extra hands are just $5. Your first hand gets you 5 cards to draw and a hot dinner at the end of the run at the worst case scenario. When you ride with friends have you ever asked yourself; what do you really know about the people you are riding with, if an emergency situation arose that they couldn t answer for themselves, so please take time to fill out one of these forms and let your riding partners know where it is located. Remember no matter how safe we try to be there always seems to be someone out there that isn t paying attention to what they are doing until it s to late. As announced during the last chapter meeting, John K. and I are looking for 4 more volunteers who are planning on going to the IL State HOG Rally on Friday, June 4 th to help the O Fallon Chapter with registration for a couple of hours in the morning. John and I will be heading down that morning and are planning on returning later that day, if you are interested please let one of us know so we can include your name. Thanks Ladies of Harley Shelly Hudnut Quincy Senior Center. Prizes are great gift certificates from TNT! You can earn up to 3 extra card with trivia, scavenger hunt items, and making all 5 stops. Stops are not just bars but fun places to visit, have a bit of lunch, or an ice cream. Just talk to the Keck's, the extra cards helped them win 1st and 2nd place last year! The ride is open to all so bring your friends and help spread the word! I'll see ya in the wind, Shelly H in advance for your help. Remember if you would like to go to a state rally and you haven t been to one the 2011 IL State HOG Rally will be at Rockford, IL on first weekend in June, I would recommend that you start planning on attending this one, this is the first IL rally that will be held north of I-80 and there should be great opportunities to get some good rides in Northern IL and Southern WI. Remember we need your input, because this is your chapter and you get out of it what you put into it. Don t forget to check the Calendar that Rich sent out via or the one attached to the newsletter for upcoming events. In closing remember to keep the shining side up and the rubber on the road. Shawn RRC/HOG Meeting Is June 2@ Warsaw Brewry Warsaw IL Social hr. 6:00pm Meeting at 7:00pm

4 Page 4 River Roads Chapter Harley Owners Group With each ride create you own Memories. ASK BRYAN?? Members have the opportunity to a question either to Bryan or a HOG officer to hand off to Bryan and Bryan would provide his answer or commentary. Both the question and response would be printed in the Ask Bryan section, limited to three per month. So any questions you may have, let the officers know so we can get some answers in the next addition. FROM THE DESK OF BRYAN SMITH ***** Hope this finds all in good health and happiness!! Today I sure am as the weather has changed, 80 degrees and we can ride without the rain n cold!!!!! This weekend at TNT the 28th and 29th will be a benefit BBG contest we traditionally had at Terry Bowers house but out grew his yard. So we are hosting it here at TNT beginning Friday night then all day Saturday!! This event benefits the American Cancer Society. Jim Wolf - Road Captain Whew buddy, what a month May was! A couple of Poker Runs, one had cool weather the other hot. Such is the weather in May. As I write this article, I can t talk about the Eureka Springs ride, because it has not happened yet. I hope Shawn reports in next months article that Mother Nature provided good weather. Not so with the four of us that rode to Milwaukee for the Celebrate Women Riders event at the HD museum. We left on Thursday morning and our timing could not have been more off. Just as soon as we pulled out of the driveway, the rain drops started falling. they kept coming down all day, sometimes in buckets other times not so bad. But hey, once you are wet, the little drops are just as wet as the big ones. So that is the way it was all the way to Rockford, when the rain stopped. I was starting to wonder if that was a bad sign for the weekend to come. Anyway, we finally made it to Milwaukee and the hotel, for a hot shower and couple of shots of whatever could help shake off that rain. The next two days were cool, Hello Everyone! with a constant fog rolling off the lake. Go inland a mile and the fog was gone. It reminded me of San Francisco. If you haven t been to the HD museum, you owe it to make the trip. I love history, especially seeing artifacts, be it a hat, glove, sign or motorcycle. Just looking at the hat that a person wore 25, 50 or even 100 years ago, provides a direct connection that gives me Goosebumps. I once saw a stovepipe hat on display at a Smithsonian exhibit that belong to Abraham Lincoln. Just standing there and staring at that hat knowing that the man himself had that very hat on his head, made me feel just a tiny bit closer to him. I kind of had that same feeling when I stood in front of the 1903 HD motorcycle named #1. I could imagine William S Harley and Arthur Davidson standing elbow to elbow in the 10 x 15 shack in the back of their dad s yard building that motorcycle. The designers of that museum did an awesome job. I got Goosebumps two other times that weekend. Once was when the women singing the National Anthem at the opening ceremony was having technical problems with the PA system. The microphone kept cutting out. To help her out, the crowd started singing along, so she would not feel alone on the stage. The other time was on Saturday night, during the group ride to the downtown street party. The ride started in a big parking lot to stage all the bikes. There were two groups, one with women on the front of the bikes, and the other with men. I counted somewhere between bikes, with 75% of them with women up front. Seeing that many bikes rolling down the street in one long line, gave me a feeling that I have no words to express. I laughed each time a car alarm was set off by the sound coming from the pipes. Reminded me of a few years back in Quincy on the Salvation Toy run, tripping a few car alarms on Maine street. That time there was just 20 or so bikes. Now imagine that with a few hundred. Of course revving the engine did not help, Susan! Plenty of rides in June, so keep a close eye on the calendar and your . Hope to see you all at the Illinois state HOG rally. In the meantime, keep the shiny side up. That of course is easy for Mike, since it is shiny under his hat. What s happening at TNT!!!!!! I hope this letter finds you doing well! By the time you read this, we will be well into the riding season still there s a lot coming up! The 2 nd Mission of the Great River Honor Flight is Thursday, June 10 th and your presence is requested that evening you can ride as part of the motorcycle escort that brings the bus back to Quincy or you can be waiting at the Holiday Inn to welcome the bus back. It s the 3 rd Annual Meals on Wheels Ride on June 13 th - which is more than just a Poker Run Shelly has mixed it up and it is a great ride for a great cause! TNT is also helping to sponsor another great cause on the 19 th : Mounted Angels Ride & Block Party. We ve been able to get the TNT Calendar on our website in a format that allows you to print it. Plus, we still have the ability to attach flyers to the other calendar if we wish. And as always, contact us if you need more info and we want to hear from you if something is wrong or missing so that we can fix it! As always, thanks for your support! 5 Volume 22, Issue 6 MONTHLY NEWSLETTER SPOT LIGHT MEMBER. Curtis Lain from Hannibal Married to Tonja He has been riding for 10+ years He rides an Ultra Limited, and his wife rides a Street Glide A member of RRC since 2001 Ride and Have Fun Just a reminder: If you are joining the River Roads Chapter as a couple, please keep three things in mind: 1. The cost is $25 total ($12.50 each). 2. Two application forms must be submitted; one for each of the parties. 3. Each party must be a This month I would like to talk about hand and arm signals. Really it is just basic communications while riding with more than one motorcycle. While riding in a group it can be very important form of communications, everything from gas/ potty stop and emergency issues. I will attach a set of hand signals that came from the HOG site. Please look over the group riding tips also attached. It has some good information. See the inclosed sheet on the hand signals. KEYS TO SUCCESSFUL FIC GROUP RIDING Group Riding Tips Group riding requires an extreme level of awareness and concentration. Know your limits and ride within them; never ride above your abilities. Mental Physical Motorcycle Environment Chapter Membership Update member of the national H.O.G. organization; each will have their own national H.O.G. number Please contact me: Rich rich-hog@comcast.net, or (217) or 1525 Cadbury Ridge, Quincy, IL SAFETY OFFICER S REPORT Experience level Come to the ride prepared. Arrive with a full tank of gas and an empty bladder Bring appropriate riding gear for the expected range of conditions Maintain a constant speed. This helps prevent the rubber band effect. Novices or riders that are new to group riding should ride at or near the back unless the riders wish to ride elsewhere. Always ride in a tight but courteous staggered formation or singlefile line. Your eyes should be watching a few bikes up the road from you, not fixed on the bike in front of you. Always be looking at least four seconds ahead. Riding side by side is very dangerous and against the law in some states. The only time bikes are to be side by side is when the group is stopped at an intersection. Never come up on the motorcycle in front of or beside you. In a staggered or single-file formation, do not pass the bike in front of you. If an exit is missed, stick together as a group, proceed to the next exit, then return to the correct exit. When in a tight curve, the rider on the outside of the curve is required Page 5 to give room to the rider on the inside in case the curve is too tight to negotiate at that speed without crowding. There is certainly no doubt that the official riding season has begun. There have already been some poker runs, a bike show or two, and other evidence that it's time to get out and ride. By the time you get this newsletter, the Eureka Springs ride will have been completed. The next major event is the IL State HOG Rally, the weekend of June 4th. If there are any of you that still wish to volunteer, Assistant Director - John Kladstrup but haven't stepped forward, please let any of your HOG chapter officers know, and we will find out where there are still needs. I have planned a ride to Anamosa, IA for Saturday, June 26 (weather permitting) to attend J&P Cycles 31st Anniversary. There will be a lot going on, in addition to the typical huge crowd. Arlan Ness will also be a guest. Watch for s with additional infor- mation as we get closer. Keep an eye on the RRC calendar for other scheduled rides and events as we move through the summer months. There should be something for everyone to participate in, even if it's just one ride or two. But remember, the most important thing is to ride safe. Until next month.
