Box 1266 Chapter Director Susan Berry As our second event (Fall Sprawl) approaches on Saturday September 12th, I hope that all of you have thought about camping (either in a tent, RV, trailer), or getting reservations at a nearby hotel for that Friday night thru Sunday morning. The entire weekend is spent with GWRRA members that love to have fun with the new friends they have made. We need to work together as a "team" to make this event fun and entertaining for everyone who attends. We ask that each chapter member donate a gift for the prize table and bring a dessert for the actual event on Saturday. The gift for the prize table is up to you, something you might like for yourself, don't wrap it, just bring it on Saturday morning and we will get it on the prize table. The food for the rest of the weekend is usually leftovers and/or contributions from everyone in the group, we usually build a fire and cook whatever is there on Friday and Saturday night. For breakfast on Sunday we usually have pancakes and all that good stuff so bring whatever you would like to have. GWRRA VA-C Tidewater Wings August

2 I hope that all of you have registered and if not please do so as soon as possible. We have had good attendance at our rides and I am so proud of VA C, we have some great rides coming up and I hope all of you think about attending. Safe travels to those going to Wing Ding and to Syd, John and Don as they travel across the country. Hope to see all of you at the next meeting on August 9th. Susan Berry Flash News!!!! Only I and the Chapter Director will know whose number that has been picked. SOMEWHERE throughout the newsletter, this random number will be placed. This particular person will receive five (5) free 50/50 tickets during our next monthly meeting. The person s whose membership number is found by that person (and that person only) can me at DPitts0849@hotmail.com and tell me where you found your number. IE. 3 Don t motorcycling. Motorcycle Safety Dave Huey, Chapter Educator Folks last month I was glad that summer had arrived and now I m not so sure. We have had some heavy rain but still have had chances to ride. let the good weather go by without getting out and enjoying our sport of With the heat indexes as high as 104 to 107 locally it has been hot to get out and ride. If you do get out and ride, make sure to drink plenty of fluids, stop and take some breaks in the shade just be smart out there when it is this hot. You ll probably get tired of hearing me say this but be sure to stay hydrated on these hot days. At the end of the month we are off to Wing Ding in Huntsville, Alabama for the 2nd time and our 28 th overall. While some were at the pool party 3 of us completed a ride to Chapter U s poker run and even with a little rain on the way home it was a good ride. Even made a quick stop by the pool party on the way home. Several things coming up over the next 3 months so come on out and join us and enjoy. Finally we must be ready by pre ride preparation for all things that could go wrong on our ride. Don t think of it as preparing for a crash but preparing for a fun and enjoyable ride. There are A LOT of opportunities for food, friends, and FUN! Here are a few highlights (in addition to our bi-weekly ice cream rides) coming up in the next couple of months. Be sure to check the full list later in this issue or on our website. Saturday, Aug. 8 Sunday, Aug. 9 BUNKO night at Sandy Renner's house. 6p.m. - game afterwards. What is BUNKO you ask? It is a dice game in which there are six rounds, progressing in order from one to six, where the number of the round serves as the target for that round's rolls. Within a round, players alternate turns rolling three dice, aiming to obtain the target number. Players gain one point for each die matching the target. If the player gets three-of-a-kind of the target number (a Bunko), they get 21 points. The round stops when a player at a head table obtains 21 points. GREAT way to learn everyone's name! We ask that each player bring a $10 gift for prize pool. Monthly Chapter Gathering. Come "C" what's happening in and around our chapter! Sat/Sun, Aug Ferry Ride through N.C. Departing McDonald's South at 7am on 8/22. You will need to make your own reservations for the hotel (Saturday night) and ferry boat ride (Sunday morning). Ferry: Cedar Island to Ocracoke Ferry (it is the first ferry on 8/23). 5 From the Training Side of Things Greeting to all. With summer in full swing, I am sure everyone is trying to get as much riding in as possible. Take advantage of the great weather while you can as old man winter will be knocking on our doors before you know it. When that happens, I am sure we will be asking the ultimate question, where did summer go? While most of us have had the opportunity to take a short break from GWRRA, we are slowly getting reenergized as we plan for Wing Ding (Huntsville, AL 3-6 Sept 2015) and Rally in the Valley (1-3 Oct 2015). I am working with Glenn and Nanette Mizner (Membership Enhancement) and John Bowles (Rider Education) to come up with new seminars that will peak your interest. I know for a fact we have candidates that will be evaluated in hopes to be signed off as new University Trainers. I have seen the candidates present before and I am sure they will do fine. PLEASE come out and support these candidates during their presentations. ATTN all CHAPTER DIRECTORS. It has been a while since we have had the seminar on Chapter Finances. I have one of the best instructors (Mike Mitchell) on tap to present this seminar. Part of the training will cover the requirements for your annual financial report. If you attend any seminar, this is a must. Chapter Directors, I highly encourage you, your ACD and your Treasurer attend this seminar. I will be sending an out to all CDs as we get closer to RITV. If you have questions, please contact me via gldwing_rider@verizon.net. Wing Ding is just around the corner and I am getting information on what will be presented. I encourage all University Trainers attend these workshops to find out what changes are in store for our University. While scheduling is still being ironed out, I have a strawman schedule for you to look at. WORKSHOPS: There will be four (4) new workshops offered during Wing Ding. Two (2) of the workshops will be previews of things in development and due to be released in the upcoming year. Among the previews will be two (2) Lead Like You Ride Workshop which will introduce GWRRA VA-C Tidewater Wings August

6 the concepts of (1) Change Formula; (2) the Double Triangle; and (3) Criteria Base Decision Making. Well worth taking! The new Horizon Program will be previewed including the new Communications Module. PROGRAMS: include two (2) one-hour seminars, Having a Difficult Conversation being presented by Dottie Bahrenburg. Team Building - Horizontal Teams presented by Joe Price What Hat do You Wear? presented by Joe Price The above is just a sampling of what is in store for those coming to Wing Ding 37. Additionally, there will be range training, Medic First Aid, both full and refresher, seminars in all three program areas. Oh, I almost forgot, VENDORS, VENDORS and more VENDORS. A chance to spend a dollar or two on that all important safety chrome. So what are you waiting for, if you have not registered for Wing Ding, get going and register now. 7 Motorist Awareness Even though, I have been honored to have the position of Region N Motorist Awareness Coordinator since November 2014, I still get caught off guard when I am at a gathering and the director calls on me to speak for the Region. This happened to me at the February Tennessee Chapter S gathering. I think I surprised myself because I had something to say to the members. There were several members that had ridden in not the most ideal conditions in an attempt to capture a plaque. I talked about the importance of making yourself visible to drivers. I reminded them that it is crucial to stay out of a driver s blind spot. I asked for their help in trying to change two of the worst misconceptions that the motoring public has about motorcycles. The first if that that say they don t see us. This is why it is essential to make yourself seen. People only see what they expect to see and unless they are a rider or know one, motorcycles are not something they look for when they are driving. Number two is that we are smaller than them and we can get out the way easily. We all know that not only is this not true but it is dangerous for us. Please remember it is our responsibility as well as theirs to be aware of our surrounding and situations at all times. 8 SHHHHHHH, I have a Secret! I have a secret and if you promise to tell everyone you know; I ll share it with you, okay? It s about communication or you might say censorship. That s right censorship, by definition it s the suppression of speech and control of written communication. I do a lot of talking to Members, Chapter Directors, District Directors and Regional Directors, along with a lot of listening. One of the things they all have in common, the one thing they all say is, what? Answer No one told me that or I never got that . And it happens both ways, from the top down and the bottom up. Let s start at the top; (1) Ray Garris/Home Office needs to get something out to the Chapter Directors and he wants it passed onto the Members. That should be easy right? Maybe. You, like me, are assuming every Officer at every level is going to pass it along. Well, that is a good assumption and believe me I ve heard some really good excuses for not passing it along. Now (2) let s go to the other end, the most important part of our Association, the Member. How many of your Officers have had a Member by-pass everyone and go directly to Ray Garris or the Home Office? Let s take the first scenario; at times there are messages sent from the Home Office or Ray Garris through the chain of command that is intended to go down to certain levels or to everyone in GW to get. The problem is that communiqué isn t in all cases getting to those that it is intended, and that is censorship. I don t believe it is done intentionally, but it is happening and in some cases there have been those that didn t think the Member needed to know. It is very important that all communications get to the right persons whether that is the next level down or all the way to the Member. If GWRRA VA-C Tidewater Wings August

9 we want our membership to be in the know, then it s our jobs to make sure that happens. The second scenario is the Member communication going up. The secret there is Trust. If your Member doesn t trust you as their Officer, they will go around you every time. The only one that can stop that is you. They need to know they can depend on you for results. They re not expecting you to solve all their problems, but they are expecting you to get back to them to let them know that you have passed on their concerns on opinions. We are all Volunteer Officers and we are all here to have as much fun as any other Member. However, we took an oath to serve the Members of GWRRA and a very important part of that is keeping them informed. A happy Officer is an informed Officer and the same is true for the Members.
