Box 1266 Yorktown, VA Chapter Director Susan Berry ( ) govtbkrldy@verizon.net We had our ride meeting and we had a nice mixture of people show up with new ideas and suggestions. The ride list has gone out and of course other rides may be added to it from time to time. You can still give Randy ideas for rides and we will decide if we want to add it to our list or it could just be an impromptu ride some weekend that nothing else is planned. We lost Short Lane as an ice cream parlor to visit so we need to find something to replace it. It is actually for sale so maybe some gold wingers should buy it! Anyone interested? Remember that our chapter is here for its members and we want to do things together as a group and just remember that while we are doing it we need to be safe and have fun doing it. There is a lot of training going on in the BLOC and you should take advantage of this training while the weather is not so great for riding. The s about training will be sent out as we receive them from other chapters and of course if we plan some GWRRA VA-C Tidewater Wings February

training we will let everyone know. If there is a training class that you would like to take please let us know. In this newsletter there are lots of chapter events that you can register for in advance, please take advantage of the early registration discounts. Let s make 2016 a great year for VA C! 3 Motorcycle Safety Dave Huey, Chapter Educator Hello fellow chapter participants. It may not seem like it but riding season is just around the corner. If you are mechanically inclined (or have a friend that is) now is the time to take advantage of the cold weather invite a friend over and do some spring maintenance. Many things can be done very quickly and easily and some are involved. Oil changes, sparkplugs and rear end lubrication are easy 1 person jobs. Air cleaner, brake and clutch fluid replacement requires a little help and some special tools. Call a friend and see if they have some spare time to kill even if is just company. I always enjoy having someone to shoot the breeze with while I m doing maintenance. If you just want to wait the chapter s first bike clinic of the year on April 23rd. Don t forget that just because the weather might be nice do a quick pre flight on the bike before any ride. Did you think that just because the bike has been sitting, that the air pressure would still be like it was the last time they rode? Just what was the pressure the last time? Has the cold enabled the air to leak off, how can that be, there aren't any leaks? Cold air acts like a siphon, and air can escape from tires even if there aren't any leaks. And where have those cracks in the tire tread come from? Has the tire started to dry rot? Batteries need a good charge from the bike running for miles for it to re-charge itself, and running down to the 7-11 for milk in 10 minutes isn't enough time for it to do much except to get warm How old is the battery? Don t forget not to over charge your battery. It should be charged at no more than 10% of its amperage. This means no more than a 2 amp charge for most Goldwing batteries. What I m are getting to folks (I know, getting there slowly), is make sure you do your pre-trip, and it will help you out in the long run even on a short ride. If you missed the ride meeting on January 23rd shame on you. This is your chapter and your opportunity to share rides you would like to see us go on. They could maybe still be accommodated just check with Randy our ride coordinator. It is just like voting if you don t put your suggestion in nobody knows about it. Until next month stay warm and be careful out there we want to see you again real soon. GWRRA VA-C Tidewater Wings February

Membership Enhancement Deborah Morris, Assistant Chapter MEC We had our first gathering of the year Sunday, January 10 and turnout from both our own VA-C members and other GWRRA chapters has set the bar high for the rest of 2016! What a great evening we look forward to reciprocating the visits to your gatherings and events during the year. Susan and I attended the OPS meeting in North Garden, VA (near Charlottesville Wahoo) we added to our knowledge about Safety and Training and Denise Copeland spoke with us about the MEPC program. Someone else can fill you in about the safety and training but I am so excited about membership enhancement. First of all, it is not just about recruiting new members. Of course this is something we want to strive for but what is key to membership enhancement is FUN! Now we know VA-C knows how to put the. Well, none of our letters go into fun but hey, we know how to have some fun; womanless beauty pageant, pie in the face contest, Fall Sprawl campfire, etc. So beginning at the February gathering, our very own Jackie and Sandy will be bringing back the fun with some unusual games. You never know what they will come up with so be prepared. Also, I will be asking YOU to help at the gatherings by greeting everyone, getting the attendance/visitor book signed and announcing our visitors. Thank you in advance for your support!!! One last thing, we want VA-C to be the friendliest chapter for 2016 which means that we need to take the visitation cards to each GWRRA event(genuinely Wacky Rolicking Something Something), let s all put our minds to it. Anyway, take the visitation cards and request a staff member sign and date them. Please keep it on your bike or in your jacket so you will always have it handy. See YOU soon! Debbi GWRRA VA-C Tidewater Wings February

Couple of the Year 2016 Daniel and Rebecca Pitts Well. Here it is, WOW! Time sure does seem to fly by when you are VA-C Chapter couple. So far we have been to Chapter B-1, B, L and O s meetings. We are having so much fun visiting the other chapters. So far this year we have experienced only one snow event. We are glad it did not stick around too long. Makes for some interesting riding (if you are crazy enough to ride in the snow!!) We are looking forward to representing Chapter C once again. We had so much fun, we were asked to do it one more year! We were honored and eagerly said Yes! What better way to meet more friends and to show our GWRRA spirit! If there is anything we can do for you, please don t hesitate to ask. We would be honored in helping anyway we can. We can t wait to C you all around the BLOC! GWRRA VA-C Tidewater Wings February

VA District Information Be Prepared for Education in 2016 Its 2016, Wil the Educator here for another year of GREAT training. Most of you know me, and some of you don t. First off, I ve been married 32 years this coming June, I have three children, 28, 26 and soon to be 14. Okay, don t laugh, it was an after 40 thing. Life is grand and ever changing! My oldest daughter is expecting this April and so I shall become a Grandfather pretty great news. I m a retired Air Force Reserve Officer with a lot of my career flying as an Air Battle Manager on AWACS. I am currently a Realtor with Long & Foster, The Ron Rush Team and have been for 23 years, located in Loudoun County, VA. I live in Northern Virginia by Dulles International Airport. Being Prepared has always been a big part of my life, from mission planning while flying, to raising my children, to pre-paring to be your NEW District Educator and I will continue as the Motorist Awareness Coordinator for Virginia. Is it time to ride yet? For some of us cold weather riding dudes, we never stopped riding so can you say heated vest or heated gloves? For others who have winterized your motorcycles, the answer is yes, it s almost time to ride, again. The title of my article refers to our Virginia District being prepared to ride, anytime and anywhere. But first we must be willing and able to learn, and sometime RE-LEARN what we thought we knew. I wanted to take this time to introduce my-self yet more importantly, talk about what is coming up for this year for the District. Region N, and specifically Virginia, has been noticed by more people for whom we are and that we plan on riding safe and having a lot more fun. Our common goal and GWRRA s motto of Fun, Safety, Knowledge is just what I have in mind for the Virginia District. GWRRA VA-C Tidewater Wings February

COMING SOON...COMING SOON Co-Rider Seminar ARC & TRC MEDIC CPR/First Aid Training Team Riding Seminar Trailering Seminar Motorcycle Crash Scene Response Here s how to start preparing for education: By attending classes, seminars, meetings, listening to webinars, attending gatherings, Rallies, reading the GWRRA, Region, DISTRICT & Chapter websites and taking those short and long rides, often. If you ever miss ANY training just check with me, or your local Educator so that we can help you find another seminar to take. I know some of you have already taken some of the upcoming training but reinforcement is GOOD. If you ever take training at another location, please make sure I know, so that I can record the dates in the database. Join the Levels Program. But, there s nothing that says you can t take the same training every year. Practice makes perfect is a great reason. We certainly never know when/if a situation will come up when we can use our learned and re-learned abilities. Let s have a great time learning together and riding together. God bless. Please watch our VA District website and Newsletter for times, dates and places for 2016 Rider Education Training The more you know the better it gets, and knowing is half the battle vadewil13@gmail.com or , we re here for you! 8 Motorist Awareness Two Seconds Rule For many years now, throughout my adult life and driving career, I've practiced the two second rule when driving or riding my wing. As I've gain more experience I've discovered that the two seconds just isn't enough. Case in point, while on my way to work yesterday, Thursday the 21st, there was a six car pileup just before I reached the gate at Fort Bragg. The reason for the six car pileup was that they were following to close and not using the two second rule. There was also some speeding involved. Since I've become a Rider Coach, I've learned that it takes 1.5 seconds to recognize the situation and another 1.5 seconds to react the situation. In my math book that s three seconds. So, my question to you is why use the two second rule? Personally, I've gone to three to four seconds instead of the normal two seconds. I've been watching the weather channel all day and I've been fixating on people in Nashville and in Knoxville, Tennessee spinning around trying to go somewhere in this snow storm. There were some shots of traffic on I-75 in Knoxville going towards Lexington, Kentucky. First, they were driving way too fast for the weather conditions and the second thing was they weren't following the two second rule. The choice is an individual decision. Drive as if it's a dry condition or drive responsibly and apply advance spacing between you and the other vehicles. For your health the latter is preferred. GWRRA VA-C Tidewater Wings February

All I ask is that you are safe and responsible and don't let Winter Storm Jonas claim you as a victim. Don t be a Superman or a Superwoman. Drive safe and apply good judgment. "One Team, One Unit!" 10 Bob & Nan Shrader Deputy Directors, A, N floridadd@msn.com National News When appointing or mentoring new Volunteer Leaders in GWRRA, particularly Chapter Directors, I am often asked the general question, "What are my duties and responsibilities going to be?" A good question and one that needs to be answered for the candidate before the appointment process is finalized. A good Volunteer Leader can't adequately perform the duties of the office to which they will be appointed unless they have a clear picture of what's expected of them. While verbal coaching and mentoring is invaluable, having an easily referenced document that succinctly spells things out can be a real help. What, you say is such a document? Why, it's the Memorandum of Understanding, or as it's more commonly referred to, the MOU. There is a business component to being a Volunteer Leader and the MOU details what these business items are. This is a two page document containing 21 easy to understand topics that list the Directors commitment to their respective office. The MOU should be thoroughly reviewed with the prospective Director candidate. Each of the commitment items should be explained by the appointing officer and all questions or concerns addressed before the appointment is made. If a candidate tells you that they won't be able to fulfill the requirements of the MOU, then ordinarily they should be removed from consideration. A candidate that is put off by the business end GWRRA VA-C Tidewater Wings February

of the Leadership mission won't enjoy the experience. To try and coerce them to take a Director appointment that they can't meet is only a recipe for disappointment on both sides. The candidate is set up for failure in advance, while the appointing officer is dissatisfied with the candidates performance in office. No good comes of this scenario and we can lose an otherwise good GWRRA member in the process. After explaining the MOU and its contents thoroughly, and the candidate still agrees, then he/she signs (along with the spouse) at the bottom of page 2. By this time, the newly appointed Volunteer Leader should have a relatively complete understanding of what is expected of them. I look at the MOU as a "promissory note". It's your "contract" with GWRRA and is a promise or commitment to do the things listed, to the best of your ability. It's been my experience that officers who basically follow their MOU do a good job. The information included in the operative Position Description is what's in the MOU, only in a semi-narrative format. Add in a little charisma and fun and you have the makings of a good Volunteer Leader. With 2016 upon us, may I suggest that each Volunteer Leader take a minute to review the MOU they signed and self-evaluate their performance as it relates to those 21 items listed. If you notice an area where you've perhaps fallen a little short, then recommit to addressing that in the New Year. Being or becoming a good Volunteer Leader isn't all that complicated. What it takes is a sense of commitment and dedication to the members of GWRRA, and the successful operation of your respective component (Chapter, District or Region), together with a well-founded sense of FUN, recreation and enjoyment while riding their motorcycles, which is why most members joined in the first place. Let s all have a great 2016 while recommitting ourselves to the core principles in our MOUs. GWRRA VA-C Tidewater Wings February

Article from Motorcycle Law Group Submitted by Jackie Wall Chapter C Member Protect your bike s customizations with scheduled or statedvalue insurance You ve spent lots of time and money customizing your bike to make it one-of-a-kind. But what happens if you re in an accident? Let s start with the basics. If your bike is destroyed in a crash, insurance companies will pay you for the bike s fair market value the amount the bike was selling for in the condition immediately before the accident. While extras and modifications can increase the value of a motorcycle, fair market value is not computed by adding what you paid for the bike plus the cost of customizations and accessories. Let s say you added custom wheels with polished rotors and tires, custom handlebars and forward controls. All that chrome cost you around $4,000. But, after an accident, you may only see half of that from the insurance companies if they pay you the fair market value of the bike. Instead, insure your motorcycle for a certain amount, often called scheduled or statedvalue insurance. This will help protect you from losing all your investments in custom parts, paint and accessories. To do this: 1. Document all accessories with pictures and receipts. 2. Tell your insurance company what it s all worth and agree on an amount (statedvalue). 3. Then, if your bike is a total loss, the insurance company pays the pre-set amount you both agreed to, no negotiating. If your insurance company doesn t offer scheduled or stated-value insurance, ask them about insuring your bike for its replacement value instead of fair market value that ensures your bike will be GWRRA VA-C Tidewater Wings February

replaced after an accident and won t be at the mercy of the free market. Many insurance companies also offer accessory coverage. This type of coverage will pay you for the cost of the accessories up to the limit that you buy. We know how special your motorcycle is to you. And we know the many things you ve done to make your ride the perfect ride. So make sure you and your bike are covered. Want to know more?
