2 Chapter Director Dave Huey Once again it is newsletter time and the monthly article writing. Mother nature is still confused but warmer weather must be on the way soon so we can get out and enjoy our hobby. Since I wrote that last statement summer has come on for real. Lots of events have passed and even more to come so let s get ready to ride and have fun. Since the last time we spoke several events have taken place. On April 7 th, we had a training day that was well attended and all of the chapter members that came out participated in the discussion and made it a very enjoyable event. The next weekend, April 14 th, was the first bike clinic of the year. Not a lot of work took place but we did all that was asked to do. We also ate doughnuts and lunch it was a GWRRA event. The very next weekend was the long anticipated 1 st camping trip of the year. A couple of us got to test-drive our new campers. We had a nice ride up picking up some Va. Grand tour checkpoints. When we got to the campground, our western member Donnie Green was already set-up waiting for us. It did get a little chilly Friday night (34 degrees) but all was well. We made a large loop ride on Saturday through Goshen Pass, Deerfield VA. and Humpback Bridge. It was a very nice ride and then back to the campground for a cookout. A great weekend enjoyed by all. May 1 st was the first Ice cream ride of the year to Windsor and I am told that all had a good time and a lot of ice cream was consumed. On May 4-6, 3 of your chapter members went to VIR for the Moto America superbike races and camped on the grounds. This was a lot of fun and we plan to attend again in The same weekend, Chapter L held their Safety day and several of our members went to enjoy the exhibits and a performance by the Old Dominion Drill team. On May 12, we attended the VA D Mother s Day Poker Run and it was a nice ride up visiting with friends and just enjoying the day. It was a good thing that John and Lynn drove the truck as they won several prizes. On the 15 th another ice cream ride was done and it went to Sno To Go in Williamsburg. According to the pictures posted it looked like fun. GWRRA VA-C Tidewater Wings June

3 Riding season is in full bore now and many events are coming up to be enjoyed if you can fit them into your schedule. June 2 nd will our first trip to Hurricane Mo s on the outer banks to get stuffed with shrimp. Also the same weekend Kevin Kimmel will be helping with the MS150 bike ride in Williamsburg marshaling the ride. If you can help contact Kevin and he will fill you in. On June 9 th, once again 2 events will be available. Chapter B1 will have a safety day and we will also have a ride to the Lawnmower races in Gloucester. Another double-header on the following weekend will be VAO Casino Picnic and VAA Poker run. We have rides planned for both events. Then the big event in June will be Rally in the Valley the th. Please come out and support your district. We are at a new venue this year and trying hard to make it a great event for everyone As you can see there is plenty to do so come on out and enjoy what your chapter has to offer. Events that have already taken place have been a lot of fun and I m sure those coming up will be also; you just need to come out and take part. 4 Assistant Chapter Director John and Lynn Floyd We think we speak for everyone when we say we re ready for riding season! Many of our VA-C members came out this past April for the first bike clinic of the year for everything ranging from tire and oil changes to comfort add-ons like passenger arm rests. Thanks to Bruce & Lisa Barnes for hosting us and grilling up some great hot dogs! VA-C started revving things up in May. We kicked off our Ice Cream Rides with the Bob Renner Memorial Ice Cream Ride to the DQ in Windsor on the 1 st. A few of our members took in the MotoAmerica at Virginia International Raceway the weekend of the 4 th. Other VA-C members participated in the VA-L Safety Day held at Chesapeake Square Mall on May 5 th and enjoyed a performance by the Old Dominion Precision Drill Team. Also on May 5 th, a few chapter members supported the Salty Dawgs in their 12 th Annual Poker Run to benefit The Fisher House. VAC has most definitely been out and about in our community! June has some fun in store for us as well! There s a lunch ride to Hurricane Mo s in the Outer Banks, Ice Cream, The Ride for Kids, Lawn Mower Racing, Ice Cream, events with VA-O and VA-A, Ice Cream, Rally in the Valley Did we forget to mention ice cream? 5 Couple of the Year Dave & Randi Green We ve had a few blips with the newsletters this year so here s a quick recap of what we ve been up to. In March, we attended Chapter B-1 s gathering at Bella Pizza in Tappahannock. It s always good to visit with them and we re looking forward to going back! We lent a hand (or 2 or 4) with the trailer maintenance and inventory. We now have shelving for the tubs and a rack for the tables. So much easier to find what you might be looking for! The April Bike Clinic was another successful opportunity for members to perform some needed maintenance on their bikes. Randi got a lesson from Bruce on how to change the oil & oil filter on her Honda Shadow. We didn t find any wet spots under her bike the next day so she must have been paying attention! Thanks Bruce! Unfortunately, we ve missed a few VA-C outings. We always assure new members that it s okay if you can t make everything and to just do what you can. We ll be putting that advice into practice this year as we have several family things going on (graduation & wedding for 1 son and a new baby with our other son). With those events, of course, come the requisite bridal and baby showers and other festivities. So, in a nutshell, we ll make what we can! We re looking forward to watching the Lawn Mower Races at the Gloucester Moose Lodge on June 9 th and are excited to visit with VA-A in Manassas for their Poker Run and Picnic on June 16th. We ve never been to Chapter A so it will be good to visit with them. For those who d rather stay a little more local, we ll have a group attending VA-O s Casino Picnic in Williamsburg. You can t go wrong with either event they re both sure to be fun! It s so hard to cover everything that VA-C has going on. 6 Back to Top It's here! It's really here!! Spring that is. After a couple of false starts, the weather has warmed up enough to not require 4 layers to go riding. Of course with warmer weather comes that icky yellow stuff which makes it impossible to keep our bikes clean, and often makes our heads ache, but it's something we put up with to be able to enjoy the ride. As you all know (or should know), the Virginia District Rally - Rally in the Valley - is just around the corner. The 2018 theme is Wings Around the World, to remind us that GWRRA members can be found everywhere. It will be held June 28-30, at the Sheraton Roanoke Hotel & Conference Center. Plenty of parking, and more room to do stuff. And with more room, we have more fun things going on! Registration has moved up and will open at noon on Thursday, brief opening ceremonies will now be held on Thursday evening, followed immediately by a short ride to the Welcome Pizza Party at the Mill Mountain Star. Friday evening will be the Ice Cream Social plus live entertainment provided by Rosalie Boyles and a few lucky volunteers. And of course we'll have an ARC & Trike class, and the CPR/MFA class (as of this writing there are a couple spaces available in each so let us know if you need either class); there's a Poker Run, a Bike Show, a Table Decorating competition, an International Bake-off, the Virginia District Couple of the Year will be selected, and we are adding a Best Dressed competition which will include the usual criteria of GWRRA apparel, AND GWRRA VA-C Tidewater Wings June

7 an International Best Dressed to fit in with our Wings Around The World theme. So anyone, from anywhere, can compete by dressing up in clothing representative of another country. We will have rider education, membership enhancement and training classes, including the modules from the OCP; and fun stuff like WINGO and other activities organized by our wonderful District MEPs. A rally schedule, along with rules and requirements for any of the competitions, should be posted online by early May. Hoping to have it done sooner, but am learning that getting anything done always takes a little bit longer than we anticipate. I'm sure most of you will be doing a lot of riding in the upcoming months, don't forget to share your rides with other chapters. Or with other folks you meet who ride. The more the merrier and a ride is a great way to recruit new members to your chapter! Until we meet again, ride safe and keep the shiny side up! 8 District Trainer Hello Everyone It s April and I m still wearing heated gear. What s up with that?????? Sooner or later Mother Nature will give up her obsession with Winter and Spring will get here, not just the date of the beginning of Spring but the nice weather that comes with it. Can t wait! It s rally season. Florida already happened, Tennessee is coming soon, Rally In The Valley will be here before you know it and don t forget Wing Ding at the end of the Summer. This means longer trips to some of these rallies. Is your motorcycle ready? Do you have enough tread on your tires? Have you looked at them? No really, have you gotten down on the ground, rolled the tire around and actually checked your tires for wear, damage, impaled objects, etc? How about that dreaded Goldwing air filter. How long has it been? Did a mouse build a nest in it over the Winter? How about that final drive? Is it full of fluid? When was the fluid last changed? Think about that, especially if you pull a trailer. Not only is it time to be sure your motorcycle is ready but also a time to be sure you are ready. When was your last rider course? We will be offering both the Advanced Rider Course for bikes and the Trike Rider Course at Rally In The Valley. We have a new range site at the Roanoke Airport and I think it is going to be nice with lots of space. You can also take advantage of rider courses in our neighboring districts like the ARC that happened in North Carolina last month. I just became aware that the Maryland District is offering a few rider courses. There is an ARC on May 19 th and 20th, a TRC on August 18th and 19th, and a TTRC (Trike Trailering Rider Course) on August 4th and 5th. Contact Jeff and Jeanie Kauffman at or j_kauffman@myactv.net if you are interested. While on the topic of rider courses, I have a couple of Chapters interested in sponsoring a Road Captain course. We will be planning all the details for these courses in early May and you can expect an announcement about them as soon as we finalize the details. Remember, those who are or will be Chapter Ride Coordinators need this course. National has provided a grace period to get it done so let s get it done. GWRRA VA-C Tidewater Wings June

9 Lastly, I would like to welcome Will Kumley back as his deployment by the U.S. Navy is to end sometime around the end of April. Thank you for your service to our country and your sacrifice as you were apart from your family for the last six months. I plan to hand the baton back to Will at the end of April. In fact, I leave for the 40 to Phoenix and Pacific Coast Highway ride tomorrow (April 10th) and will be back around May 1st. Will and I will have to get together and talk about all that has happened in the last six months. That will be a very long lunch! With that being said I would like express what a pleasure it has been to be the Interim District Educator for you for the past six months. I enjoy serving the membership. I have learned so much and appreciate your patience as we all continue to work through the changes to GWRRA. I plan to continue to serve the Virginia District in my returning role of Assistant District Educator and my continuing role as an instructor. Ride Safe! 10 National News A Critical Point of Understanding One thing I knew as a volunteer Officer of GWRRA is that if I couldn t find it, I d create it. I think we are all guilty of this. The problem with this is that when we do that, we create rules that just don t exist. The Members question it and then we, the volunteer leaders, don t look so good. Kind of like being caught in a lie. Ray Garris says that if we don t tell you or have the guideline or rule, the Field/Members/Officers will fill in the blank. This is so very true! Please understand that since I have been there, done that, I am working very hard as the President to send out a united message. We will have a new Officer Handbook by the end of April that will help eliminate this. My request to Chapter Directors, reach out for help but also for ideas. Your TEAM is a great place to start but just remember those resources! Then accept the ideas with gratitude, use what you can and embrace all the participants in many different ways to grow your Chapter for FUN, Safety and Knowledge! Enjoy!
