Great items would be: backpacks filled with items to occupy the children's time while in the hospital e.g. puzzles, crayons, books, paper, scissors, etc. Whitehorse in Conway, NH is going out of business. This is a good time to replace your helmets or gear that needs upgrading or replacing. They will be closing the first part of May. At this time, their hours are Monday thru Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This is their online link: Whitehorse Gear, 107 East Conway Road, Center Conway, NH Telephone No: or (Fax) Safety Report (David Gauthier): Please remember to wear proper gear when riding. Bring gear conducive to all riding conditions; weather and conditions can and will change throughout the day. A motorcycle helmet is a type of helmet used by motorcycle riders. The primary goal of a motorcycle helmet is motorcycle safety - to protect the rider's head during impact, thus preventing or reducing head injury and saving the rider's life. Some helmets provide additional conveniences, such as ventilation, face shields, ear protection, intercom etc. The conventional motorcycle helmet has two principal protective components: a thin, hard, outer shell typically made from polycarbonate plastic, fiberglass, or Kevlar and a soft, thick, inner liner usually made of expanded polystyrene or polypropylene "EPS" foam. The purpose of the hard outer shell is: 1. to prevent penetration of the helmet by a pointed object that might otherwise puncture the skull, and 2. to provide structure to the inner liner so it does not disintegrate upon abrasive contact with pavement. This is important because the foams used have very little resistance to penetration and abrasion. 3. The purpose of the foam liner is to crush during an impact, thereby increasing the distance and period of time over which the head stops and reducing its deceleration. Helmet Replacement Ultimately, the useful service life of a safety helmet is dependent on the intensity and frequency of its use. Helmet replacement is recommended even if only one of the under-mentioned points applies: The helmet was subjected to an impact; incidental drops or bangs, all add up over time. The comfort padding or the retention system has become loose due to heavy use or display signs of deterioration. The synthetic foam padding displays signs of heavy use and the helmet feels too loose. Test: with the retention system fastened, the helmet turns to the side when you gently shake your head. There are indentations in the EPS liner and/or white scratches can be seen on surfaces with black paint.
4 Even if none of these apply, SHOEI recommends replacement every 5 years, starting with the retail purchase date; once the helmet is used the first time, the clock starts. Heat, chemicals, sunlight all add to the condition of your helmet. However, not all manufacturers or safety groups have the same response; many recommend replacement from manufactured date. Reminders Due to weather conditions, e.g. warmer weather and your desire to get out there and ride, please remember the salt and brine that was put on the roads and highways during the inclement weather conditions along with moisture will rust the chrome and metal on your bikes. If you ride, please wash your bikes prior to putting them away. Even though it is getting warmer outside, higher elevations and areas where the roads are shaded, have a high probability of ice and slippery conditions. Springtime also brings litter along with dirt, stones, sticks (and branches) and other debris from the winter months, the high winds, colder elevations and people. Please be careful when riding. Destination Ride: Destination ride to Town & Country in Gorham, NH. Telephone No.: Date: August 18 th - 20 th. Fifteen rooms have been reserved. You need to contact them yourself and book your own room. Check in on Friday, August 18 th and check out on Sunday, August 20 th. Cost per room $119 plus tax for a total of $129.71/day for a total of $ There is no contenental breakfast. However, there is a restaurant adjacent to the hotel. Mention GWRRA when making reservations. If you have any problems, please contact Scott when calling the hotel. ************************************** Chapter Director David LaJoice bigkidvt@comcast.net Assistant Director Laurie Barnett laurie@wcvt.com Treasurer David Gauthier vtgoldwing@aol.com Assistant Treasurer Steve Gilman gilmansteven712@yahoo.com Educator David Gauthier has picked up the slack.
