2 CD Reflections and Honors 2015 going OUT 2016 Stay Tuned In, here we come! GWRRA Pennsylvania Chapter Y the last six months has been an amazing journey! It started out as just a group of friends chatting at Montgomeryville Cycle Center reminiscing about the great times we shared as part of a GWRRA chapter a few years back. The friendship and comraderie experienced at the chapter level on up through the Rallies and the ultimate Wing Ding celebration! That was then, now here we are, ending 2015, with a new chapter with an 80 member roster. To finish out 2015, we want to acknowledge our Charter Members. Chapter Y was chartered on June 6, 2015 and the work of organizing the chapter began. GWRRA considers the chartering period to be the first 90 days taking it to September 6, GWRRA identifies Charter members as those members who help get the Chapter up and running by virtue of their work and participation all those members who choose to become Chapter members with their participation in Chapter activities are considered Charter Members. In recognition of this support, we honor our Charter Members with the official Charter Member rocker, which can be worn under the 4 GWRRA patch. We thank them for their vote of confidence in GWRRA and the Chapter Y staff. Now, let s start the 2016 new year looking forward to the many opportunities that GWRRA offers to get involved, meet new friends, ride new roads, and gain new insights into motorcycle operation and safety measures. I can t wait to get started! To get our chapter off to a great start for the new year, we are enlisting all members support for Chapter Y s Couple of the Year, which will be announced very soon. The COY program has two purposes * First and foremost, it provides an opportunity for chapters to recognize and honor a couple each year for their dedication, accomplishments and participation within the Chapter. * Secondly, it establishes a process for identifying outstanding couples who can serve their Chapter and District as ambassadors and spokespersons. Being selected as a Chapter COY is an honor bestowed on a deserving couple who has shown dedication and commitment to their Chapter and promoted the GWRRA motto of Friends for Fun, Safety, and Knowledge. When the announcement is made, please congratulate our special couple and thank them for their on-going work for Chapter Y and GWRRA. Lastly, the Pennsylvania District is again this year using a Raffle tied to the Pennsylvania Lottery drawing system. It is a means to raise money to help fund the District s programs, and future District events. There will be 31 winners during the month of August Winner is based on the Big Four Pennsylvania evening lottery number. Each ticket has two numbers on it. The nightly payout is marked on the calendar of each ticket, and there are four $500 nights. Tickets sell for $5 each. The most important part of this fund raising project is that Chapter Y benefits from selling the tickets If we sell less than 200, we get 25% for each ticket or $1.25. For each ticket sold above 200, Y s treasury gets 35% or $1.75 per ticket. Last year we got our tickets only a few weeks before our Kick Off in July and managed to sell 131 tickets and our Chapter treasury grew by $ So, please consider taking some to sell to friends and family to support not only our District events, but also our Chapter treasury. Now, for the most important we hope to see you all at the Gathering on December 19 and we wish everyone a wonderful holiday season and a healthy and a happy new year full of GWRRA Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge. 4 RIDER ED Hello Chapter Y, The riding season has officially come to an end with the expected drop in temperatures and the salt and cinders on the roads. This definitely takes the fun out of riding. We had a safe and enjoyable season this year and I would like to thank all our riders and co-riders for their participation in the chapter rides and events. It is always a wonderful sight to look ahead, or in the mirrors, and see the lineup of gold wings. Be sure to thoroughly inspect and T-Clock your trusty steed before you put it away for the winter and tender your battery. December is a good time of year to start planning and brain storming for next seasons riding adventures and how to properly prepare for safe and enjoyable rides. In these plans, I would like to suggest a few video sessions with the GWRRA Downloads covering Touring Braking, Trailering, Slow Speed Cycling and Co-Rider. There are several other motorcycle videos available and would provide great food for thought. All of these make for an enjoyable night or weekend afternoon get-together. There is still a little bit of time left to purchase SAFETY CHROME as the day for the annual visit from big guy in red is just about here. I am sure there is still some room in his sleigh for a couple of extra pieces. Be sure to have your GL1800 brake recall performed during the winter months so you re ready to roll in the spring. I would like to thank Peggy, Ron and the staff for the support they have given to Lee and I as Chapter Educators and the Rider Ed Program. Lee and I will be your Chapter Educators for 2016 and look forward to continue working with Peggy, Ron and the staff. As always, feel free to offer any ideas/topics you may want mentioned or discussed to either Peggy Kratz or myself. If you have a topic you would like to present yourself, maybe from a personal experience, feel free to contact me. It is always interesting to hear what ideas our riders and co-riders have and how they are beneficial to all our members. All suggestions are welcomed. 6 MEC Corner We had a great turnout for our November gathering! Another superb job by our director and her staff. We even had a few surprise visitors with some interesting ideas for upcoming events. I didn t get to go on the ride to PC Pub for lunch that day, but those who did told me they loved the roads and scenery along the way! We had a great turnout for lunch, and by the sound of all the camaraderie, I d say PC Pub was a hit! Lunch was great as always, and it was a good time to get to know new members and visitors. December 6 th was Montgomeryville Cycle Center s Polar Bear Event. A number of Chapter Y members stopped by to support BJ and MCC, our Chapter sponsor. It was a great turnout with bikes from New York, New Jersey and even one Honda Valkarie from Colorado (Wow!). The showroom was converted into a makeshift dining area and the smell of hot chili filled the air. Boy did it smell good! It was sure great to get out and ride the first weekend in December! The weather s been so crazy nice. Who would have thought we d still be riding in December! Jeff even gave me one of my Christmas gifts early, a pair of KLIM gloves. They re definitely the warmest gloves I ve ever had. I hope everyone gets to enjoy a few more rides before Old Man Winter arrives! I know we re glad his flight s been delayed. 7 From the Tailpipe Has this weather been incredible or what? Who d of thought we d still be riding in 50 degree temps this time of year. I remember riding back from Daytona in October and telling Pam on that chilly second day, I think the season is just about over. It was 30 degrees that morning and after a few hours at highway speed things were getting shall we say, a bit numb. The day after we got home, I changed the oil and did some scheduled maintenance figuring she d soon be on the tender for her long winter nap (the bike, not Pam). And here we are today, still riding like there s no tomorrow. I racked up 1000 miles since that oil change and frankly wouldn t care if the weather never got a degree colder. I m having way too much fun. Problem is, it s getting close to Christmas and I got to start thinking Chestnuts roasting on an open fire not Safety chrome glistening off my new back tire. Yup, since Old Man Winter hasn t shown up yet, I m still in search of S-curves and switchbacks, when I should be searching out gifts for Mrs. Claus. Ah what the heck, there s still a couple of weeks till Christmas. I m good, right? Seriously folks, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but eventually this weather will slip from our appreciative grasp. Our bikes will become statues in the garage and our hearts will ache for spring. But until then, take advantage of the mild temperatures and enjoy a few last-minute adventures. Cool weather riding can be just as enjoyable if you gear up and pace yourself. Remember, any ride is a good ride, especially if you re a wind-in-the-face junky like me. By identifying a couple that is active in the chapter, participates and has an interest in the group is where the process starts. The culmination ends by being selected as Chapter Y s Couple of the Year. What an Honor!! By being Couple of the Year they will be honoring their Chapter, District and Region back - thanking them for selecting them to represent the Chapter. S0 please come to our December meeting for the big announcement and to help honor and celebrate this hardworking couple. We hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy and prosperous New Year. Lee Little Just want to add a piece of history to this As some of you are aware, many of our current Chapter Y members were active members in the previous Chapter Y of years past. During that time, each year the chapter identified a special couple Some might like to walk down memory lane with me Previous Couples of the Year were Dick and Martha Foote, Miguel and Gracie Tirado LeBron, and Doug and Lee Little.
