4 ASSISTANT DIRECTORS COMMENTS GREETINGS CHAPTER PA-K Now that Wing Ding 38 is in the rear view mirror, I just want to give a very sincere THANK YOU to RIch and Wendy. They have been non stop for four years representing our chapter, then the PA district and onto the Region B. I can only say that it is GWRRA's loss that they fell short of being selected International Couple of The Year. Maybe they can slow down a bit and take a breath. But look out GWRRA, John and Glenda are right on their heels!!!!!, The 2016 Holiday Party is coming up and the plans are moving ahead for the November 12th event. We will need some volunteers to help with decorations, registration table and games. Donations for door prizes and and Silent Auction are welcome. All proceeds will go to the Bethesda Mission. There is no gift exchange this year. The flyer has been added to this months newsletter and will be on the web site as well. ( For some reason the flyer Gary ed to me will not copy & paste in a readable state. As soon as I figure out how to clean it up, I will it to the chapter. Denny) ACD Gary & Judy Roberts EDUCATORS COMMENTS Greetings, It seems as if we went from winter right into summer without a transition period to get acclimatized to hot weather. I don t know about the rest of you but most days I am housebound, as when it gets over 85 degrees, I start to not feel very good. I am hoping to get more riding in as it cools off. We had an enjoyable time at the Trike Course. At least Glenda and Wilda did. John L. John C. and I were just spectators. While the Ladies were in class us men went over to the Harley plant, planning to take a tour until it was time for the Ladies to go to the range. Bummer! Tours are only on week days. So it was back to the York Motorcycle Club where we sat in on the balance of the class work. The videos were interesting and all too soon it was time for lunch. We invited a young man who was riding a Spyder to join us. We may see him. When we found out he lives in Mechanicsburg, we gave him gathering information. After lunch it was time to do the range work. I expected to have to sit in the car with the AC on. On one corner of the range there were some large pines with picnic tables under them. I am not sure how it worked but it was cool enough under the trees that I could stay there. I am sure Glenda will tell about the class in her article, so I will not comment more on the course. Other than to say the Ladies could not have had bigger grins on their faces unless you moved their ears. The young guy on the Spyder was also having a fun time. Your are riding and can feel the heat getting to you. Time to stop and cool down. Take a break in some place with AC, drink some cold liquids, NO not a beer! More like Gatorade. Beer, tea, coffee and most sodas are diuretics, and will cause you to become more dehydrated. It may taste better but does not help with the heat. Kitty found a cool towel at Bed, Bath & Beyond. I used it on Chapter W s Bug Run. It worked very well as I did not get to feeling bad until almost home. Take care, Ride aware, Denny
5 From your C.O.Y. Whoever ordered this HOT weather, would you please cancel your order? John and I have continued to visit the different chapters in Pennsylvania. On August 10th we visited with Chapter F in Pleasant Gap. Was so glad we decided to take the car. We ran into heavy rain to and from Pleasant Gap. On August 17th we visited with Chapter X in Tunkhannock and this time we took the bike. Very nice ride. Well, our August continues to be busy after a loll during July. The weekend of August 13& 14 (yes, the hottest weekend of the month) Wilda Crosson and myself took the trike course in York. Yes, we had to have John C. and John L. drive us there because (1) Wilda only had her permit (2) I am not ready to be on the main roads with the trike. Saturday morning we were at class at 8am - 12:30pm with class work. Our instructor, another John, did a great job teaching the class. Wilda and I picked up lots of great pointers and of course whenever you take a rider course you learn something new. The afternoon we spent out on the range with John (class room instructor) and Steve. Again husbands took us from point A to point B as the range was at a different location than the class room. It was HOT, HOT, HOT (106 degrees) on the range but we stuck with it. Lots of breaks and lots of water. I think we sweated every ounce of water out of our bodies. We are on the range until about 4:45pm. Sunday we started at 1:30pm on the range. Only three exercises to do on Sunday because we did extra exercises on Saturday. After these exercises came the test. BOTH OF US PASSED!!!! Although I already have my license I took the test anyway just to prove to myself I could do it. One change in the laws is if you take your test on a trike you receive a restricted license when you pass the text and cannot ride a two wheeerl. You have to get another permit and take the test on a two wheeler. If you already took the test on a two wheeler, you do not have to get another permit and take a test for the trike. Wilda and I went away with a lot more knowledge, confidence, and appreciation of the trike. If you have the opportunity to take any of the Motorcycle Safety Courses, I encourage you to do so. Its FREE. Our next adventure was Chapter W's Bug Run. Would you believe the bugs were hiding from our Gold Wings????? This was probably the first time our windshields and bikes were not hit by a load of bugs. But two lucky people did get a bug on their targets. Our own John Crosson and a gentleman from Chapter M. There were nine bikes and 14 chapter members. It was warm but not as warm or humid as it has been. Labor Day Weekend: WOW! Already? Some members of Chapter K went out with a bang celebrating the end of summer. John C., Wilda, Jack, John L. and Glenda attended Chapter Q campout September 1-5. We had a BLAST! The weather was wonderful, no rain, no humidity, and cool. The nights were very cool so a heater was in order. We rode, ate ice cream, rode, ate, rode, ate ice cream, rode. I think you get the picture. Saturday evening Mary from Chapter D, Wilda and I took the bikes and rode to a craft show at Finley Lake, NY. Since this was the first time Wilda and I have been out on the bikes since our trike class and the first time on the roads, we asked our husbands to go (not Mary, she's single). Wilda and I drove to and from the show and it was dark when we got back to the campground. Maybe this is a start of a new tradition? Anyway, sorry a lot of you missed out on the fun. Ask Jack about the ice cream cone at Bob's Trading Post. John & Glenda Chapter K C.O.Y.
6 DISTRICT DIRECTORS Greetings everyone, Well the 2016 riding season has been in full swing for a couple of months, but now we have to say it is winding down for us folks here in the northwest part of the country. Daylight is dimming sooner in the evening and now the fireflies aren t as active as just a couple of weeks ago. I am typing this newsletter article while listening to the cicadas singing their fall mating song. Don t despair or start thinking you need to put your wing away yet because there is still some good riding left ahead of us for a little while. You can tell the season is winding down by all the county fairs starting to pop up and the various district conventions going on around the region. During the past year and a half that Andi and I have been District Directors we have had the privilege of attending various chapter events throughout the district and have observed many different ways that chapter directors lead their gatherings. We have heard some interesting thoughts recently that listed the differences between a manager and a leader. Here are some of our thoughts. The manager is a copy; the leader is an original. The manager maintains; the leader develops. The manager focuses on systems and structure; the leader focuses on people. The manager relies on control; the leader inspires trust. The manager has a short-range view; the leader has a long-range perspective. The manager imitates; the leader originates. The manager does things right; the leader does the right thing. I'm sure we will see ourselves in one of the above statements. In trying to lead your chapter, you will probably need to sometimes be a manager and sometimes be a leader. It all depends on the situation. Every chapter is different and one leadership style may work well with one chapter, but not so well with another chapter. Your responsibility as chapter director is the welfare of the chapter and making it successful. Another good sign of a successful chapter is the enthusiasm of their leader. If you are enthusiastic about growing your chapter, then your members will also be enthusiastic. If you are on an ice cream ride and your chapter is laughing and having fun, other people will see that and may become interested in joining your chapter. Take a step back and look at your chapter. Is it having fun and growing or has it become mundane and doing the same old, same old at each gathering? It's never too late to start something new. Don't be afraid to try some new ideas. If one idea doesn't work, then try something else. You can never fail as long as you keep trying.
7 Joel has been busy cutting checks to the PA District raffle ticket winners. We have had some unsold or returned tickets from chapters that were winners. But the majority of the winners were sold by various PA chapters. There were instances where the winning number was a returned unsold and was in between two sold tickets. What are the chances? But that's why they call it a lottery. Maybe if the chapter has sufficient funds they could purchase unsold tickets. All it would take is one ticket to hit and you could recoup your investment. This is just a thought. Finishing touches are being made for the 2017 PA District Rally flyer and registration form. Make sure you save the dates - May 18,19,20, When we sent out the survey after our last rally, we received some good ideas from our membership that may boost our fun for the 2017 rally. If you had a good time at this last rally, you can count on having as much fun if not more in We noticed that some chapters are working on ride schedules for There are dates that you will need to save for the upcoming year. We have chapters that have stepped up to host All Chapters East and All Chapters West for Both chapters are working on details and dates as we write this article. As soon as they have everything in place we will make an announcement as to when and where they will be held. If you are making plans for next year one thing you can put a date for is our District Meeting. The date for the meeting is April 29, The meeting will be held in Altoona PA this year. Times and location is posted on the District website. We are encouraging all our chapters to start posting their chapter events on our PA District website. If you have a flyer or not you can put an announcement on our website for other members to see. This is a handy tool for chapters to use when they are scheduling rides and trying to get Roll for the Dough points. Also your chapter newsletter editor has the ability to post your event flyer on the newsletter section of the website, another good tool to use. If you have any questions please contact us and we will guide you in getting this accomplished. Rick & Andi Riek
