FROM YOUR CHAPTER DIRECTOR I don t think we are ever going to get a lot of riding in with this kind of weather sticking around. We hope if you are riding that you ride safe! We have done a little bit of riding here and there when the weather decides it wants to break. May 5 th - 7 th was Chapter K s campout at Drummer Boy! If you didn t attend you missed a great time even though it rained most of the weekend. We didn t get to ride, but we had a good time socializing and having fun! Rhonda and Barry Blyler came and visited us for supper Saturday night. We had our own little buffet going! It was delicious! Thank you, Rick for doing most of the cooking over the weekend! Are you for hire??? May th was the PA District Rally! First and foremost, I would like to congratulate John and Wilda Crosson for doing a Fantastic job in the District Couple of the Year Selection Process. There was a good turnout for the PA District Rally. Chapter K had 15 people attend the rally. A great time was had by all I believe. Rich and I did get a chance to ride for a little bit. With the rain that was on Saturday, that gave most of us time to attend some interesting seminars. May 29 th was the Memorial Day Parade in Etters. Even though it started out raining, we had a great turnout from Chapter K! A few of us stayed for the service after the parade! A Goldstar mother spoke about how she lost her son! It was a very nice service enjoyed by all. July 14 th, 15 th, 16 th - Ride to Hillbilly Hot Dog. We will be staying at a Best Western Plus in Bridgeport, West Virginia. 5 FROM YOUR CHAPTER ASSISTANT DIRECTOR It is no wonder that we are old as we are. It seems like it was just yesterday that I received the from Vicki, with that gentle reminder that newsletter articles are due. And yet, here we are again. The chapter had a very busy month of May with campouts, rides, Spring Flings, rallies and recruitment activities. However, we were only able to be part of three events. At the beginning of the month, we went on the chapter campout, and it rained. In the middle of the month, I went to the Valor Clinic Foundation fundraiser for veterans, and it rained. On Memorial Day, I rode in the Etters parade with several other chapter members, and guess what? It rained. I realize that watering the planet is essential to life, but enough is enough. I decided not attend the state rally this year as I was invited to participate in a 22-kilometer hike in Glastonbury, CT to raise awareness to the daily 22 veteran suicides a day. I am positive that you would agree that 22 suicides a day is 22 too many. Gary & Judy ACD From the Valor Clinic Foundation Day This lighted cross was even more beautiful in person taken at the Memorial Day Service in Newberrytown, PA

FROM YOUR CHAPTER EDUCATOR Greetings Chapter K, As I am writing this before the State Rally, I can t tell you what you missed if you didn t attend. Hopefully I will learn some safety things that I can pass along afterwards. I would like to know how many of you need the Motorist Awareness seminar. It is being offered at the rally, but not everyone is going to the rally. If you are in the Levels program and want to advance to a higher level, you need to have it. If enough people are interested, I will see if Doug can present it at my place. Most winters, we do not ride for a couple of months. Since I ride and we are all aging, I know that we are not as good a rider as when we put our Wings away. If you think you did not lose any skills over the winter, then I believe you need to put something different in your pipe. Riding is just like anything else we do. If you want to be good at something, you need to practice it. Don t you practice something every time you ride? Stopping, swerving, maintaining lane position even little things need to be practiced. What do you do to become a better rider? Take care, ride aware, Denny

FROM YOUR DISTRICT C.O.Y. AS YOU GET OLDER, YOUR SECRETS ARE SAFE WITH YOUR FRIENDS. THEY CAN T REMEMBER THEM EITHER! John and my time as the Pennsylvania District Couple of the Year is winding down. We really enjoyed visiting with all the chapters in PA which was a personal goal we set for ourselves after being selected last May at the District Rally as District C.O.Y. We would like to thank everyone for a warm welcome as we visited and the pictures will serve as a reminder of the great time we had. But that does not mean we won t be back to visit again! As most of you already know, John and I are preparing to participate in the Region Selection being held July 9 th at the Region B Fun Day in Greentown, PA. We hope to do Pennsylvania proud. John and I attended the Pennsylvania District Rally, May in State College. We had a great time seeing friends, making new friends, attending seminars, playing games, having fun and having more fun. The talent show Friday evening was proof that we DO HAVE TALENT. Why aren t we on TV? The weather this year was much improved from last year so we did get a chance to ride and see the countryside. So what if it rained Friday evening and most of Saturday? We needed to attend seminars and get our safety and knowledge, so Saturday was a good time to do just that. At least we didn t have to ride home in the rain Sunday!! On May 27 th, Rich, Vicki, Rick, George, John C., Ned, and John and I did a membership drive at Velocity Cycles and handed out hot dogs with the trimmings, chips and water to employees of Velocity and customers. Jeff, Sandy, Larry, Grace and Wendy stopped by as well to assist in the membership drive and hand out hot dogs. Although not very busy, we did get a chance to talk with customers, getting the word out about GWRRA and the benefits they have to offer. It also gave Chapter K members a chance to bond with each other and kick tires. The day was overcast but we DIDN T GET RAINED ON! On May 29 th, Chapter K participated in the Newberrytown Parade. This time we got rained on! Rich said we would pull out from TSC, Dillsburg at 8:15 a.m. sharp but guess who was 5 minutes late?! In spite of the rain it was a wonderful day to have a Parade to honor all Veterans. Chapter K attendees were: Rick & Vicki, John C. & Wilda, Larry & Grace, Curt, Gary, Rich & Wendy, John and myself. After the Parade, there was a Memorial for all Veterans at the local Church. It s a beautiful service with grave side services as well. Check out the pictures on Chapter K Website. HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY. Tired Dog An older, tired-looking dog wandered into my yard. I could tell from his collar and well-fed belly that he had a home and was well taken care of. He calmly came over to me and I gave him a few pats on his head. Then he followed me into my house, slowly walked down the hall, curled up in the corner and fell asleep. An hour later he went to the door and I let him out. The next day he was back, greeted me in my yard, walked inside and resumed his spot in the hall and again slept for about an hour. This continued off and on for several weeks. Curious, I pinned this note to his collar: I would like to find out who the owner of this wonderful, sweet dog is and ask if you are aware that almost every afternoon your dog comes to my house for a nap. The next day he arrived for his nap, with a different note pinned to his collar: He lives in a home with 6 children, 2 under the age of 3. He s trying to catch up on his sleep. Can I come with him tomorrow? John and Glenda, PA District C.O.Y.

ABOVE: John and Glenda at the District Rally. Great costumes. These two gentlemen brought a tractor trailer to the PA Dist Rally to teach us about tractor trailer safety and what they can and can t see. They put us up in the cab and we were all amazed at what they CAN T see. SHARE THE ROAD!!

FROM YOUR CHAPTER C.O.Y. We would like to start off by saying a big thank you to all Chapter K members for the support we received at the C.O.Y. selection process at the District Rally in State College. A special thank you to Rich and Wendy for the use of their room, and to John and Glenda for listening to our presentation and guiding us with suggestions. We had a great time going through the process and at the rally. We did not have a lot going on this month. John went on the Stag ride on the 12 th and he and other chapter members went to Chapter B for their Spring Fling on the 13 th. We participated in the Newberrytown Memorial Day ride on the 29 th, rather a misty day and it would have been easy for us to say we were not going. But those men and women gave up more than I can imagine, some gave their lives and some came back with loss of limbs; I could and should stand in some rain to honor them. It was a good day!!! And as for those weather apps, don t believe them. Coming up: ALL CHAPTERS WEST -- June 9 th 11 th hope to see you there. LEESBURG POKER RUN June 17 th ICE CREAM June 20 th GATHERING June 25 th (John and I will be going to Chapter H for their Dice Run/BBQ if anyone would like to go along. Have a great June and ride safe. A few others later in the summer: FLIGHT 93 NATIONAL MEMORIAL July 22 nd -- John and I will be leading. We are planning on going to the Flight 93 National Memorial. Hope you will join us. ELK RIDE TO BENEZETTE -- August 11 th 13 th. We are down to 11 people signed up. We can take up to 16. If you re interested, let me know. If you are planning on going, we are asking for $40.00 per person by July 19 th. This covers both nights. If you have any questions, please call me. John & Wilda Chapter K C.O.Y. Dreary day for the Newberrytown Memorial Day Parade and Service.

Kinda says it all, huh?

It was certainly cool when we left the house on Thursday to go to Drummer Boy Camping Resort for the Chapter K weekend campout, but not uncomfortable. We went a day early to just be able to sit and relax figuring the weather forecast, the campground would probably not be full. It wasn t, until Friday. Rich and Wendy arrived early on Friday and we put up the EZ Ups, lit a campfire and pretty much relaxed some more. Gary and Judy came, and so did John and Wilda and John Jr. We cooked over the fire as the weather actually turned really nice on Friday after lunch. And to our surprise, the campground started to fill up. We saw all these retro mini antique campers come in. They were fun to watch. It was very cool to see 1 st generation small tag-along campers that were fixed up and still being used today. It turns out they were in another campground that flooded, and were moved to Drummer Boy for the weekend. The rains held off on Friday until around 10 p.m., then the skies let loose. Saturday was a very rainy day, but thanks to the EZ Ups, we managed to stay dry. Cooking over the fire proved to be a challenge but we did have good food despite Mother Nature trying her best to wreck it for us. I have to give kudos to John Jr he slept in a hammock under a tent and said he was warm and dry. God bless him, that hammock did look comfortable. On Saturday evening Barry and Rhonda Blyler joined us for dinner. Barry was supposed to bring the sunshine and said the rain was to stop at 4 p.m., but it didn t. We still had a good time anyway. On Sunday morning, we were all tired of the rain, so we all just packed up and headed home. Thanks to Rich and Wendy for setting this up. Wish more could have joined us, but I m sure the weather played a role in that.

6 Stags and 1 Old Hag. It was the second Friday in May, May 12 th, and today was the annual bike rites of passage the Stag ride to Country Cupboard. Rick says, you re going, aren t you? I said sure as we used to go back in the early 90 s with Chapter B and there were always lots of women there. So, we are on the bike and headed for the meeting spot at 81 and 11/15. Jeff Martin is ahead of us, by himself. We pull up to the meeting spot and there is Jay Ziegler, by himself. Along comes John Leib, by himself. Then it s John Crosson, by himself. Then John Crosson, Jr., by himself. While we are sitting there waiting for everyone to meet, about a million motorcycles go flying by us, all with single riders. I am sitting in the sidecar thinking I really should have stayed home. I am going to be the only non-stagger there. Well, there actually were a few women there, but not as many as I used to see. There was a white Goldwing with a Hannigan sidecar, and after breakfast I walked out to it and there was a little girl putting her IPAD on the seat. I asked if she was in the sidecar, and she said yes, and I said I was in one too. Her dad called it her $10K bed because she does a lot of sleeping in it. They go everywhere with her in it and it reminded me of when my daughter was young, about 8, and Rick had a sidecar. She went everywhere with us. I think there was only 1 other sidecar, for a total of 3. I thought there would be more. All the different bikes were fun to walk around and look at anyway. The breakfast was pretty good. We ve gone there in the past for the sticky buns. They did have them and they were as good as I remembered. I did not take any home even though they sell them in their bakery. We walked all through the gift shop and I didn t even see anything that I couldn t leave without. Rick and I headed home by ourselves, going down 522 to 104 to 11/15, to 81 and home. It was a nice ride, and the traffic wasn t even bad. The $10K bed

Chapter B Spring Fling. Even though it rained, 5 members of Chapter K ventured down to the Kiwanis Park in Lancaster to join Chapter B with their spring fling. Rich & Wendy, John Crosson, and Rick & I enjoyed a good part of May 13 th with Chapter B and several other Chapters from PA. Chapter K really cleaned up in the prize department. In fact, we were almost thrown out because we were hogging them. Wendy won 3 prizes at bingo, and Rick and I each won a prize at bingo and we also won a Sheetz gift card door prize. The food was outstanding. It was a huge salad, and what looked like endless crock pots of all good stuff. Then there were the dessert tables. A whole row of them. Too much to even sample. If any of us left hungry, it was our own fault. The broccoli salad was my favorite, even over the desserts. I don t know who made it but yum, yum. Because of the rain, they had the dice run indoors. It was run quite ingeniously. About every 45 minutes, they would call us up for our dice rolls. No one got lost, got wet, missed a checkpoint, or was late getting back. It was great. Rick and I look forward to it next year. Chapter B Spring Fling Recruitment Day at Velocity Cycles. Wow, it has been a busy month. On Saturday, May 27 th, a bunch of Chapter K members went to Velocity Cycles for a recruitment day, which turned out to be a pretty nice little picnic. Thank you to all who came out to support your Chapter: Rich & Wendy, John & Glenda, Rick & Vicki, George, Ned, John C., Jeff & Sandy, and Larry & Grace. Hope I didn t miss anyone. We did have a couple of folks stop by to talk about GWRRA. Thanks Rick for cooking hot dogs for us and thanks Rich & Wendy for bringing the hot dogs & rolls. We were definitely expecting rain, but Mother Nature felt bad about raining on us for our campout, and she gave us a pretty nice day. She even kept the wind at bay so we could put our recruitment paraphernalia on tables without worrying about it blowing away. All in all, a great day. Thank you to Velocity Cycles for allowing us to hold this event. As Arnold says, we ll be back. Vicki & Rick Larson Editors

FROM YOUR DISTRICT DIRECTORS Hello PA District Rally goers everywhere. Well, here it is the middle of May and the PA Rally is now history. All the work and all the effort sweating the details are a wonderful memory now. What a grand time we had in State College. Looking around seeing everyone laughing and having fun was well worth the effort that the whole district team put into planning and working the details. We started out Thursday night with a wonderful and hilarious show with the magic of Cliff and Kelly Hopkins. What great performers they are. When Cliff and Kelly show up to perform for our group they really do a spectacular show. We laughed until we had tears streaming down our cheeks. This is even before Cliff brought me up on stage. Everyone goes away wondering how he does what he does. It seems that our humor feeds off each other. On Friday Mother Nature supplied us with a beautiful sunny, warm day. It was a perfect morning for Chapter I to host the outdoor Chapter games. Judging by the laughing I would say everyone had a wonderful time participating. Thank you Chapter I! After that, there were games going on inside. Diane and Jim Heffelfinger also hosted a bingo game in the atrium which was attended by many members. The seminars that were offered also were heavily attended. It was also a beautiful day for everyone to head out for a ride and to see the beautiful countryside in Center County. After everyone returned home to the hotel, that s when the fun continued. Ice cream was the first thing on the agenda Friday evening. After ice cream, we started getting our chapters on stage with the start of the PA District talent show. WOW what funny, talented groups we have in our district. It was so entertaining that we noticed guests other than wingers were enjoying the show. We would like to thank everyone that participated in the show. Saturday brought rain and cooler temperatures but that didn t stop some people from trekking out on their bikes. Mostly everyone stayed at the hotel and either attended seminars or played games. The members that did stay in did got to enjoy our indoor and outdoor vendors. After the games, everyone took a break late in the afternoon to get ready for the Saturday night banquet. The red-carpet lead everyone into the grand ballroom to the Saturday evening entertainment and meal. There we thanked our district team, region team, out of state team and our out of state chapters. I would like to thank all our vendors that came to support our rally. I would also like to thank Tiffany for coming to the rally and allowing everyone to ride the motorcycle simulator. The Skid Bike was also a big hit on Friday. It is something everyone should see. It is a motorcycle that has a frame assembly on it that will help new riders that never rode a motorcycle understand the basics of motorcycle riding. It should be put into the MSF program very soon according to the instructor that was there. Another big hit with the membership was the No Zone tractor trailer that was there for our entertainment. I never met 2 guys more passionate about what they do than truckers Tim and Gary. They did a wonderful program on what truck drivers see and don t see, from the pilot seat of a tractor trailer. I can t thank them enough for what they did at our rally. I would like to take this time to thank each member of our chapters that came to the rally. Without you coming to participate there wouldn t be a rally. Also, we must thank each member that helped with their chapter assignments. Again, there is no way we could have done it without you. I would also like to thank our PA District Team for all the time and effort in making the 2017 PA Rally a tremendous success. Andi and I would never have been able to pull this off without their help and planning.

The 50/50 for both nights were well worth buying some tickets. Both nights brought some members a nice nest egg. At the Saturday night dinner, I made an announcement that come January Andi and I will be completing our tenure as District Directors. We would like to thank everyone for all the support and friendship that was given to us for the last 3 years. We also announced that Harold and Diane Jackson will be taking over the reigns as the new District Directors for I am sure the membership will appreciate their excitement and energy to take over the PA District. Harold and Diane came to the podium and announced the location for the 2018 PA Rally. Next year s rally will be held at the Park Inn in Uniontown, PA. It looks like it s looking like another exciting rally coming before you know it. Sunday brought over a hundred members to the Nittany Room for the Chapter S gathering. Jim and Diane held a wonderful and short gathering. After the gathering, all the chapters in attendance got to take pictures for our Roll for the Dough program. Then it was time to bid State College adieu. It was a little cooler than earlier in the week but at least the rain held off and hopefully everyone made it home warm and dry. Again, we can t thank everyone enough for the wonderful time everyone had. Rick & Andi Riek Pennsylvania District Directors groundshark@atlanticbb.net (814) Home (814) Cell Go for it now.
