The eacon February 2017 Click Here For A FREE Trial Membership Region Directors Tom and Renee Wasluck Can you believe the month of January is gone? We are patiently waiting for the groundhog to let us know that spring will be here soon. As mild as it has been, we are ready for some good riding weather! After our family dinner on New Year s Day, we did get our start of the New Year ride in. In our January article, we mentioned that the weather has not been that bad in the Northeast. We should have not been so general in our statement. We should have said that, at least here in Pennsylvania where we live, it has not been bad. We received a message from our Webmaster in New York about weather articles in that state talking about cold, windy weather with lots of snow. We are talking feet of snow! The next time we mention the Northeast, I guess we need to be a little more specific. We really enjoyed our weekend attending Maryland s Winter Thing in Ocean City, Maryland. We both love this event. This year, we can truly say it was a Winter Thing. Almost 10 inches of the white stuff fell on Saturday keeping the seminar rooms full! Click a title below to go directly to the page! 2 Maryland District staff does a great job planning this rally. It is the perfect weekend to unwind after the holidays. You don t have the traffic like you do in the summer, and the room rates are great! It is also a great time to get your seminars in since it is too cold to ride. Congratulations to Maryland Chapter H! Iit was announced at Winter Thing that they are the new District Chapter of the Year. Congratulation also goes out to Terry Gardner for who received the Jimmy Colbert Award. The Charlie Gallagher District Director s Award w as aw arded to Danny and Paulette Horton and Spanky Barth. Thank you Maryland District for a great weekend! Due to the weather, this time of the year is usually devoted to planning FUN instead of riding. Even though we can t ride because of the snow and cold, we can still have FUN. Do you know that there are many district and chapter FUN events going on - as well as many Rider Education classes scheduled within the Region? Please take a look at the Region B calendar where we have the major events listed. Each district and many chapters have their own webpages listing their events. Don t hibernate, get out and have some FUN. Winter is a great time for chapters to review and update their websites. Do you have all of the correct contact information listed? (This could be your link to a new member.) Is your website up-to-date? Have you listed the correct district and region team members? Do you display the GWRRA logo? Is there a link to the national website? A number of officer positions changed at all levels in the districts and chapters. Please make sure that your newsletters and websites reflect these changes. Renee and I really enjoy the newsletters you send our way. A special thank you goes out to all of the newsletter editors and webmasters throughout the region. Your job is very important to the membership. Remember that, even if your district or chapter has a Facebook page or website, it is imperative that you publish a monthly newsletter to keep your members well informed. A monthly newsletter is something that is required by the GWRRA guidelines. If there is ever an issue with your district or chapter where the IRS is involved, they will request copies of the newsletter as proof of the district or chapter leadership and Rider Education activities. If you think this would not happen, take it from us, it has happened - twice - in Region B. Be prepared, keep your members informed and publish a newsletter monthly. The region publishes a calendar with all of the major region activities that we know about. You can send your event to Clark Clemens at cwcleme@twcny.rr.com; he will add it to the region calendar. Please check out the calendar, and plan on attending some of the great events Advertisement: Woodwing Art Northeast Region Educators New York District Directors: Planning. 3 throughout the region. There seems to be something for everyone during the year;: cruises, camping trips, ice cream rides, mid-winter get-togethers, training days, all of the region-wide rallies, and of course, the big event...wing Ding. Once again, if you think you have a free weekend someplace in Region B, it means that you have not looked at the websites or all the chapter and district newsletters with the opportunities for FUN. Speaking of events, mark your calendar for a new Region B Event. The region team is working on putting together a Summer FUN Day on Sunday, July 9, 2017 at the Promised Land State Park. The region team is planning a FUN day of games, food, a Tricky Tray Auction, and we will be holding the Region Couple of the Year Selection. Please come out and support the region and have a great day with your GWRRA friends and family. The flyer for this event is posted on the region website: If you would like to check out the state park, you can go to this web site: Promised Land State Park, in the beautiful Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania, lies over 12,000 acres of state forest land, with two lakes and several streams which makes this a fantastic location for a day of summer FUN. The park itself is 3,000 acres of land with so many activities - there s something for just about everyone! For those of you who enjoyed the Region B Campout, Promised Land State Parks is home of Pickerel Point Campground, so you may want to turn Summer Fun Day into a full weekend. YOU MUST BE PREREGISTERED FOR THIS EVENT. NO ONSITE REGISTRATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED We would like to welcome all of the new district and chapter officers to the Region B Team. We are off to a good start with the completion of necessary annual paperwork. Processing of the new Operations Officer paperwork that we ve received has been completed. Please remember that all chapters are to complete a yearend financial report that is sent to the appropriate District Director. Each district then completes their year-end financial report, and send it to us. The district and chapter directors are responsible for filing their 990n with the IRS. If you are the district or chapter director that has stepped down, you are responsible for the year 2016; you are to file the 990n with the IRS. Once the 990n is filed, the district director can send in the 8822B to make the change in officer for the chapter. District directors need to collect from the chapters, copies of the chapters notices that the 990n has been accepter by the IRS. After the districts collect the acceptance Page 3

notices, they send them to the home office using address: Please copy us on all of the district/chapter 990n acceptance notices so that we can file them with the region s records (as a back up to the districts files). When we filed the Region B 990n, we found out that now that the IRS is handling these forms, they no longer send an confirming that the filing has been accepted. Now, the filer must go to the website to check the status of the 990n. Once it is accepted, click on the highlighted number to access a confirmation page that you print and send to us. Because there have been some issues with filing the 990n, the District Directors from Pennsylvania have put together step-by-step instructions for filing the form. We have distributed these to all district directors to share with their chapters. We are hoping that this will help make the 990n filing clearer and result in fewer issues. When the 990s and financial reports are completed, most of the paperwork requirements for GWRRA are done for the year! If you have questions, please ask your appointing officer for help. All of the district directors have raffle tickets from the region. The raffle starts the first of May and runs for the whole month. There will be 31 winning numbers drawn during the month. One lucky ticket holder wins $250. There will be eight $100 winners, four $75 winners, and eighteen $50 winners! Several districts have already submitted sold stubs! Please help your region by participating in this raffle that helps to fund operations, training, and rider education. 6 Region CPR/FA Trainers Keith and Elaine Price Baby It s cold outside! Last month we covered one of the two medical hazards of cold weather. Frostbite, while serious and potentially disfiguring, is rarely fatal. Hypothermia, however, can - and often does - kill its victims when not treated and allowed to progress to its critical stages. It s insidious as it can lull you into a feeling of complacency in its terminal stage. Hypothermia can occur quickly and without much warning. You can become lulled into thinking that you re just a bit cold, but eventually you end up in real trouble. The normal human body temperature is approximately 98.6 o. In some people, this can vary by a couple of degrees. Hypothermia can occur in wet and windy conditions in air temperatures of just 60 degrees. If your core temperature drops below 90 degrees, hypothermia can be fatal! Early symptoms of hypothermia include shivering, cold, pale, or blue-gray skin color. Apathy (lack of concern) and poor judgment starts to set in, as well as numb hands, fingers, and difficulties performing tasks. More severe symptoms include muscles becoming stiff, the cessation of shivering, a slow pulse, and weakness or sleepiness. Finally, loss of consciousness and death can occur, if treatment isn t started. The best way to prevent hypothermia is to simply stay warm. If you must venture into the cold, dress in layers. The air trapped within the garments - or between the layers - provide insulation. Start with a base layer of long underwear. Polypropylene is best as it wicks moisture away from your skin. Polypropylene usually comes in three weights with lightweight being suitable for milder temperatures or higher activity. Heavyweight is better for severe cold or more sedentary activity such as ice fishing. Next a middle layer should be worn. Wool is an excellent choice as it retains some warmth when wet while cotton does not. I do not wear jeans in the cold. I wear wool pants. A fleece garment is an excellent choice as it provides great insulation with little weight. Page 6

Finally, a water-resistant jacket (perhaps goose down or Thinsulate) finishes your cold weather attire. I like thick pack-boots because they are warm, waterproof, and provide excellent traction with lug soles. Don t forget gloves. I usually take two pairs of warm gloves in case one gets wet. A couple of chemical hand warmers are usually taken as well. When someone has been caught ill-prepared, or overexposed, hypothermia is a very real threat. The treatment for hypothermia is simply to warm the patient. In severe cases, call 911 and be prepared to perform CPR if necessary. In less severe cases, get the patient to shelter and remove any wet clothing. Wrap the patient in dry blankets and place them near a heat source. Remember that heavy clothing is worn to keep the cold out, but at this point will insulate them from the warmth! Since the hypothermia victim s body may not be producing much (if any) heat on its own, a heat source is a must. Be very careful though! Placing the victim too close to an intense heat source such as a fire could be dangerous since they may not be able to feel that they are being burned! Similarly, do not place hand warmers or heat pads directly on the skin. Place a dry towel between a heat pad and the skin. When there is no direct heat source available, improvise using your own body heat. Lie down next to the victim and cover both of you with several blankets to warm them. Monitor the condition of the patient. If they do not seem to recover - or if they become unconscious, as opposed to simply sleeping - call 911 immediately. When in doubt, make the call to emergency services. Winter can be an enjoyable time of year but be careful. It also can be hazardous. Take some precautions when you are outside in the cold! What we teach saves lives! Stay healthy, stay safe. Keith and Elaine Price Northeast Region CPR/FA Coordinators (716) pricewingk@aol.com Page 7

Leadership Training Eileen & Tim Guile Monkey See Monkey Do We went to Winter Thing in Ocean City, Maryland and had a very nice time including the snow! On Saturday, it snowed about inches what a mess! Snow removal in Maryland is not what we are used to up north. It made for some interesting driving, but we didn t have to go anywhere. When we left early Sunday morning, the first 60 miles of our trip was on solid ice, but because there was virtually no traffic, it was all good. Later, as the traffic increased, we found the roads were free of snow and ice so the trip home was uneventful. The best part was that we left the snow behind us so the driveway at home was clear. Congratulations to Sidney Spunt who qualified as an ITCP Instructor and may now present the new modules. Also, thank you to all of the instructors who presented all the scheduled classes and activities made the weekend fun and interesting. Have you noticed that if your leaders (whether they be the Chapter Directors, District Directors, Region Directors, etc.) participate, so will the members? The leaders set an example and set the tone for the chapters, districts and regions. If they don t believe in training and don t participate in Rider Education, Leadership, Membership or MFA/CPR, the chapter members follow the example set by leadership. That is why it is of utmost importance that leaders be involved in the education that is so important. In the case of Rider Education and MFA/CPR... it can be life-saving! Our Region Directors, Tom and Renee Wasluck, are wonderful examples of leaders participating in education by taking - and presenting - the training that is offered. As we drill further down in the hierarchy, many - but not all - district directors participate in the training offered. At the chapter level, we often see that even fewer leaders participate in education and training. Remember that, as leaders, you are the ones that your members look up to and imitate. Page 9

This is true about rallies as well. Chapter and district leaders who don t attend neighboring rallies cannot expect neighbors to attend their events. There is good interdistrict participation from some of the states but not all. Let s start the year with more participation in neighboring chapter and district events. That is the way to have way more FUN! The Online OCP is currently not available, and will not be back online in the near future. It needs to be updated and they are looking at different readers so it is not so mundane. See last month s newsletter on how to sign up for the new ITCP (Instructor Trainer Certification Program) videos, submittal, and debriefing. ITCP s are starting to be scheduled and unless I know where the interest is, you may miss out. The more you know the better it gets! 13 Reporting as your Chapter of the Year Coordinators: Last month, at the Maryland District Winter Thing, the 2016 Maryland District Chapter of the Year was announced during the banquet held on Saturday night in Ocean City. Congratulations to Maryland Chapter H, and Chapter Directors Judy and Shane Patishnock, who were selected as the 2016 Maryland District Chapter of the Year. Their package was already submitted to us by the Maryland District Chapter of the Year Coordinator, Ken Trass. Thanks, Ken, for the early submission. The chapters from each district in our region should have already submitted their packages to their District Chapter of the Year Coordinators, District Membership Enhancement Coordinators, or District Directors. The winners in each district should be selected soon. District Directors It s time for the 2016 Chapter of the Year submissions for the Northeast Region. Remember, if a chapter was selected as a 2015 District Chapter of the Year, they cannot be selected as the 2016 Chapter of the Year. Forward hard copy of the winning District Chapter of the Year packet (only one winner/packet per district) to the Region B Chapter of the Year Coordinators (Bob and Julie A Hearn) on or before March 1, The packet - including the District Participation Report (Appendix D1 in the Guidebook and Checklist) - must be sent to: Robert & Julie A Hearn Landing Way Box 2356 Leonardtown, MD Once we receive the packages, we will convene a review board from the region staff, including ourselves, the Region B Directors, and the Region B MECs. 15 Membership Enhancement Program / ARL List Coordinators Dan and Mary Costello Chapter Life The middle of winter is not the best time to be thinking of motorcycling, but it is always a good time to be thinking GWRRA. This month starts with many chapters looking at ride calendars and events to put into place for the benefit of GWRRA members. We should all be doing the same. The end result of this practice is an additional bump in the benefits of chapter life. Chapter life is actually what we all get when we participate in GWRRA chapter events. We don't always think about the term, but we all benefit from it. Chapter life is why we joined GWRRA. Think about the fun at chapter gatherings, the camaraderie with fellow members. Think about the chapter jokester that seems to find, and bring out the fun, wherever the chapter goes or whatever they do. Think about the road captain that seems to always find the best roads, the best sets of twisties, and the best vistas on his (or her) rides. Think about the times when you couldn't make the ride, but you always heard stories about how great it was. How many times did you say afterwards, "Gee, I really missed it. I wish I could have been there." This is what every ride committee has in mind when the schedule is put together. Chapter life is all of this - during the riding season, as well as the non-riding season. The only difference is riding, or not, and you. Do you attend these rides or are you saying "I really missed it?" Are you letting your ride committee know about great roads and destinations, or are you letting others lead you? Are you assisting in chapter events, or just showing up? Participating in chapter events and rides is a large part of chapter life, and it is very important to a successful chapter, but it is only half of the picture. You are the other half. Are you helping the chapter by giving back; Page 15

repaying the chapter for all the fun you have had? Are you able to offer destinations to the ride committee for rides and off season events? Can you provide ideas for rainy days when the rides are postponed? Participating in chapter events is so important to a successful chapter that we, the chapter leadership team, all try to do our part. The real question is how do you work YOU into the picture to help make your chapter successful. You are the key and YOU are the solution. We look forward to seeing YOU at the next chapter event. 18 Northeast Region Educators John & Pam Van Deusen 2016 has come to a close. We saw a lot of changes come about last year. Probably the biggest change came to the Parking Lot Practice. Shiny Side Up replaced the PLP, and Range Safety Observers (those responsible for keeping us safe while practicing) replaced our PLP Facilitators. All facilitators have kept their status in the database in case any changes are made down the road. The emphasis is on just getting out to practice, even if it is just a tune up before a ride or chapter event. We also saw the introduction of the range-only riding courses for the ARC (Advanced Riding Course) and TRC (Trike Riding Course). If you are current in the GWRRA Levels Program, you can alternate a range-only class with the full class. If you have not maintained a current status in the database, you will not receive credit for the rangeonly course. Our International Director of Rider Course Programs, Chuck and Melanie Geggie, completed updating approved riding courses for the levels program. You can go to the GWRRA website under Officers section to access Rider Education where you will find the updated list. The important point to take away from these changes is, GWRRA wants to get people out to practice. We are seeing a decline in our senior members participating in riding courses. Statistics show that we are still crashing our bikes at an alarming rate. Ninety percent of riders do nothing to prevent an accident. Let s work to get our districts and chapters out for more training this year. Put an emphasis on promoting safe riding techniques and strategies. Get your district and chapters interested in doing a skills event before a ride or include it as a stop. Reach out to those chapters and members not involved in the levels program to sign up. Remember to include any new or updated member on your N.6 report on the bottom section of the report. I also would like to stress the importance of our N.6 reports both at the chapter and district levels. Let s be safe and start the New Year with safety on our minds. Remember to gear up, before every ride. John & Pam Van Deusen NE Region Educators (315) (Cell) fj.vandeusen@icloud.com Page 18

New York District Directors Shawn and Dawn Hayes Planning Make yours NOW! Well folks, whether it looks like it outside or not, we are knee deep in winter right now. That is always bad news for motorcyclists, touring riders. We look in the garage and it looks like a cave in the middle of the day with all the bats sleeping. Oh, how we want to run into the garage and wake those bats up and get out on the road and FLY! Well, there is an upside to this. It gives us time to plan for the upcoming season. If you have ever taken and career planning courses or seminars you know the one item that is always preached is write the plan down! If you don t, the plan will never come to fruition because there isn t one! Each chapter should be doing this to help plan their upcoming riding season. It will truly pay dividends to the health of the chapter. One great example I have seen of this is Chapter NY-H who has their ride schedule already planned and posted for next year already. Check out how they do it at The District has a plan also. Our plan is to have great events that start and end the riding season. These are already planned and advertised for the entire District to see and take advantage of. While there are some diehards out there (as of this writing, I am taking my bike out tomorrow, it is going to be 53 degrees in Buffalo!) most of us wait for the Spring and warmer weather to get back out on the roads. So, the District plans the official start of the riding season with the annual District Ride-In. This is a low-key weekend getaway somewhere in this great State where we can just get together and socialize and ride. What a wonderful way to start the riding season. You leave there energized and ready to go for the rest of the year. This year Chapter NY-K is hosting the annual District Ride- In at the United States Military Academy at West Point. This is sure to be a GREAT event and if you want to get a sense of where you will be riding, just click on this link for the Hudson Valley - Hudson Valley images. After seeing those images, how can you not want to come? You can find the flyer and registration form on the District webpage under the Events tab. The direct link is Page 19

We have restructured the major events in New York to have less large events in order for you to be able to possibly attend them. In the past, there were three large events. People can t afford that. You told us that and we listened. We got rid of one of the events to now just have a start and finish event. If the Ride-In is the official start of the riding season, the District Rally is the official end of the riding season. This is a celebration of the members and what a GREAT and FUN riding season we have all had. We come together and tell stories about where we have been over the past year, the things we have seen that we would have never seen in our cars, and it is always held at a location in the great Empire State from now on! How can you not want to go to this event, especially after you look at pictures of where the event is going to be held this year. Click on the link to the right to see pictures of Hope Lake Lodge in Cortland, NY - Hope Lake Lodge images. This flyer is also posted on the District webpage at bistateconvention2017.htm. Are you serious???!!! you are probably asking yourself. Rooms up to $ per night for only $ per night? Yes, you are right. We have a heck of a deal there for you! Start with the Ride-In, end with the District Rally. What a plan! So, are your plans made? If so, Dawn and I will see you wherever you are going to be!
