FROM YOUR CHAPTER ASSISTANT DIRECTOR Emmet Norris (Plain Brown Wrapper PBW). On August 10 th 2017, GWRRA lost a very dear friend, a Life Member, a Charter Member to Chapter PA K, but to me, most importantly he was a World War II Marine Veteran. He was well known and loved by everyone in the District, the Region, and across the whole country. No matter where he traveled to, he couldn t help not to make new friends. He was a magnet to joy and having fun. It was a badge of honor to have had your bike or car, or anything he could get his hands on, to wrap. One of my first memories of Emmet was at a chapter anniversary party held at the West Fairview Fire Department. Having just moved up from North Carolina and not knowing the area very well, I had a slight problem finding the location. Needless to say, that by the time we arrived, there wasn t much parking left. There was a bank on the side of the building, and after all I did have a Ford Explorer, so that is where we parked. We went inside and met up with our new Goldwing chapter members. We had good food, good conversation and fellowship. I talked a long time with Emmet. After all, we had a lot in common, only a few years separating us. Through all of that, he even managed to slip out and wrap up the Explorer. I guess it wouldn t have been hard to find, just look for North Carolina license plates and a Camp LeJeune base decal in the window. I don t recall if he stuck around at the end of the evening to observe his handy work. Several years ago, Jeff Melander led a chapter ride to Rolling Thunder, in DC. In true military fashion, he and Linda, Judy and I did a Route Recon. During our time down there, we ended up at the Iwo Jima/Marine Corps War Memorial. Jeff and I rode the Goldwings around to the front of it and had pictures taken. At that moment we both had said, Wow, wouldn t it be great to bring Emmet down and have pictures taken of all of us. Life had gotten in the way and that trip never took place. But in hind sight, which is always 20/20, I m not sure if Emmet would have gone. As a very young and a very strong young Marine, I can only imagine what he went through each time he went up and down that 554-foot hell hole and survived it to go on and to live the wonderful life that he did, and to have touched the many hearts that he did. I am very honored to be able to have called Emmet Norris my friend. It was only fitting that we sent him to guard the Gates in Emmet Norris style: Rest in peace Emmet SEMPER FI Safe travels, Gary & Judy, ACD
Greetings Chapter K, FROM YOUR CHAPTER EDUCATOR This month we will have a little interaction. I have two questions for you: 1. Do you know what a stale green light is? 2. You are riding on a country road that has curves, dips, and rises in it. You know, the kind we all love and would like to ride going in the other direction. You see a man or lady along the road taking mail out of their mailbox. What should you be prepared for? Want to find out? Answers at the next gathering. Take care, ride aware, Denny Raffle Tickets: Kitty Schardt has graciously agreed to help us with our District Raffle Ticket sales. If we sell 200+ tickets, we will get $1.75 per ticket back to the Chapter. This raffle is for the Lottery BIG 4, and the deadline to purchase tickets is January 15, Kitty has the tickets now and they will be available at the gatherings. CONGRATULATIONS TO JOHN & WILDA CROSSON ON OBTAINING YOUR LEVEL 4. John and Wilda received their patches at our last gathering.
FROM YOUR DISTRICT C.O.Y. Below are some pictures from the Elk Ride to Benezette, PA. Yes, we did see some elk. The six of us had a great weekend. Thanks John & Wilda for setting this up. Some pictures above of the Elk Ride to Benezette. Great weekend. FROM YOUR CHAPTER C.O.Y. We started the month off with John going to Gettysburg for the Amazing Individual Challenge. He had a good day and liked the course. Then it was off to the Elk Run. We had a great time even with some dirt roads. We went up on Friday and saw an Elk in someone s yard even before we got the key to go to the house we rented. Besides there being no doors on some of the bedrooms, the blankets worked great and the house was very nice. We took a wagon ride but didn t see any Elk. When we got back to the visitor s center, we saw a nice herd. We stood there and watched and they just kept coming out of the woods. It was very cool. We had an Elk walk through the yard and one in the yard across from us. I think everyone had a good time. After the gathering, we had kind-of a follow-the-leader ride. We had 6 bikes and 2 with CB s. John L. led for a while, then John C., then back to John L. We made a stop in Shippensburg for some ice cream which John C. paid for. Sorry Jay and Ned, you left the group too soon. Yesterday, August 31 st, we headed off to Chapter Q s campout at about 8:30. We got here at about 2 p.m., got set up and went to get something to eat. In talking with Mike, they have some great rides planned for us. I better get out there befor e I miss breakfast. Ride safe, John & Wilda Chapter K C.O.Y.

EDITOR S CONTRIBUTION: BECOMING A FIRST RESPONDER Reprinted with permission from Ray & Sandi Garris, GWRRA Director Emeritus: If your Chapter, District or Region needs more response to your flyers, invitations, etc., this might just fit in your Newsletter. When you receive a flyer announcing a Chapter, District, or Region event, or any communication that asks you to RSVP, what do you do? Most of us just push it to the back burner for a while. We might think about it, maybe check our schedules and perhaps talk to our spouse, or just do nothing right then. Did you ever stop and think about what we just did by doing nothing? We just slapped the event planner in the face. This poor soul, (who, by the way, is a Volunteer) has the huge job of planning how to entertain us at this event, be it a ride, dinner, rally or even Wing Ding. Their job is to make a myriad of arrangements on our behalf, making sure that our experience is positive and fun-filled. These events include many opportunities for us to really enjoy ourselves and the people around us. These incredibly talented and dedicated people in our organization have devoted many hours of blood, sweat and tears to arrange the meeting place, route, rest stops, places of interest, meals, entertainment and, of course, an affordable and comfortable place to stay. Their job is really difficult when you consider that most of their planning is done without the answer to the very important question: How many members are going to attend? The answer to this mystical and important question rests solely with you and me. These hardworking volunteers have been forced to make many, many decisions involving you and me with only an educated guess, at best, about who will attend. They have even been forced to make reservations for meals, lodging and meeting space with mandatory deposits, many of which are non-refundable. Many a sleepless night has been had by these dedicated planners and volunteer leaders trying to outguess the rest of the group. What can we do to avoid this dilemma? It s really very easy! We can become a First Responder when we see that flyer or invitation asking for an RSVP by responding immediately. The dictionary says RSVP is a French phrase that translates to Please Respond. It is a standard practice to reply to an RSVP request, confirming attendance or declining. Yes, even if you can t or don t want to attend, let us know, please. Here is a wonderful opportunity for you to have your voice heard by the event planner. Let them know in a positive manner about your concerns regarding the timing (hour, day, month), location, distances, type of event, cost, activities, type of food or anything that would cause you not to attend. This is very valuable information for our volunteer leaders and planners. Positive feedback is one of the most important parts of any successful organization. In order to become a First Responder, we must do a couple of things ourselves. When we receive an invitation, we need to consult our calendar, communicate with our spouse and then make a commitment to attend and most importantly, communicate that information using that flyer, registration, or invitation. In first aid and CPR, a First Responder can make a difference in someone s life. With a registration form, flyer or invitation, your response can also make a difference!! Sandi and I, along with all of our volunteer leaders and planners thank you in advance for your support on this note. We congratulate all of those members who are ready to become First Responders.
The letter on the previous page, as stated at the top, was reprinted with permission and the topic isn t immune to any Chapter. We have a couple of upcoming events which we will be asking for RSVP s because of food requirements, so we hope you will please let us know, either positively or negatively, if you will be attending. We have a Chapter picnic on September 9 th, a Dice Run on October 21 st, our 2018 Planning Meeting on November 18 th, and our Holiday party on December 2 nd. All four of these events require us to know who will be attending so we can ensure sufficient food and beverages, as well as seating. We understand that many people want to be sure they either definitely can or definitely can t attend a function. If you respond quickly that you can attend, and then something comes up that you must change that, just let us know. Life happens and we all know and understand that. We are just asking that you help us out as much as possible by letting us know either way, so our events can be great successes. Thank you. Vicki & Rick Larson Editors PA CHAPTER K DICE RUN: Chapter K will be having a Dice Run on October 21 st beginning at 11:00 a.m. It will start and end at the home of Rick and Vicki Larson, 9421 Carlisle Road, Dillsburg, PA. SPECIAL DIRECTIONS, PLEASE NOTE!!!! The Dillsburg Farmers Fair is held in the town of Dillsburg on the same weekend as our Dice Run. The Dice Run actual ride itself will not go into or near Dillsburg but getting to our house will be different. See below: Instead of turning off Route 15 onto Route 74 South and going through the town of Dillsburg, please turn at Golf Course Road. If you are southbound, continue straight at the traffic light you would normally turn left at to continue on Route 74 South (Sheetz, PNC Bank, Wendy s). Get into the left lane and go straight through the next traffic light (Mountain Road). Once you pass the golf driving range on the right and Tom s on the left, get into the left turn lane to turn left on Golf Course Road. Follow Golf Course Road to the stop sign (about a mile). Turn right onto Route 74 South, go past the Northern York school complex, and turn left to continue on Route 74 South. Go 2.6 miles to our home, #9421 Carlisle Road on left side. Our house number is on the mailbox. The Dice Run is about 40 miles and you will roll your dice when you get back to our house. Food and beverages will be served after the ride. Please let us know if you will be participating.
REMEMBERING EMMET NORRIS On Thursday, August 17 th, 10 Chapter K members attended the service for Emmet Norris, former PA Chapter K member. A few members rode over on their bikes. Emmet s bike, his trusty 1990 Gold Wing with over 200,000 miles on it, was at the service. His family members said he rode it only about a week or so prior to his death on August 10, The service was excellent and very moving. Lots of friends and family stood up to talk about Emmet and share some funny and pertinent stories about his life. Everyone who knew Emmet will miss him. I wanted to share a portion of the program with you, it really says it all: Emmet is my name Don t call me mister! Mean, ornery and disagreeable just ask my sister. Motorcycled my way across every state, Even jumped out of planes Wow, it was great! Toured Iwo Jima and won the war, Never gave too many hugs that s what high-fives are for. Once you stepped in the ring, I d probably knock you out, Respected by so many because I learned what love s about. Remember my humor and the joy I would bring, Imagine me smiling with my matching bowtie and ring. See you in heaven I ll be riding my pearly Gold Wing! The pictures above are Emmet s (WRAPPED) bike and of Luther, his trusty riding buddy. Did you know that Luther was kidnapped by fellow Gold Wingers? He visited California and many other States before being returned to Emmet. That s how popular, well-known, and loved Emmet was. He will be missed by all who knew him. Rick Larson P.S. Did you know that Emmet designed and drew the Chapter K Patch?
I was so impressed with Wendy s article last month about the Hillbilly Hot Dog ride, that I thought I d give it a shot for our Twin Grove campout earlier this week. Great campground. LOTS of cabins and things to do. Open pavilion, but a great place for a rally. Just sayin. On Sunday after the Chapter K gathering, went to Twin Grove RV Resort in Pine Grove, PA for a couple of days of R&R. We arrived Sunday afternoon, Brian and Sandy were already there and set up. Rick and I, and Rich and Wendy arrived together and got to our, which did not look like that, thank goodness. First things first, get the going. This was a very relaxing couple of days as that s about all we did sit around the Campfire and talk about anything and everything. Our meals were great. Brian and Sandy had Sunday night,, which were great. Monday morning brought a nice day with cooked outside. YUM. Monday evening, it was our turn, and we served. Tuesday morning brought for much of the day (I have no idea who that lady is, by the way), and Rick and Rich got soaking wet trying to cook. We still ate and it was good. On Tuesday afternoon, we sat under the EZ UP canopy that Rich and Wendy brought (thank-you thank-you) and Rich was trying to teach us a that he thought he learned from his 10-year old granddaughter. Turned out he had to her to get the correct instructions. It was a fun game, and where Rich got the official title of CARDBANA-BOY, Rick was FIREBANA-BOY and Brian was SUPER(visor)BANA-BOY. Ya hadda be there. On Tuesday night, it was Rich and Wendy s turn for dinner and they served delicious. What a great couple of days. We re gonna do this again. OK, this one wasn t as cute as Wendy s Hillbilly Hot Dog. JUST SAYIN.
Pictures from our Campout. Top: Lots of stoves for food. We did eat well. Middle: Our 3 campsites. Bottom: Rich added colors to our campfire. Really neat.
GLENDA & VICKI S FUNNY CORNER My Living Will Last night, my kids and I were sitting in the living room and I said to them, I never want to live in a vegetative state, dependent on some machine and fluids from a bottle. If that ever happens, just pull the plug. They got up, unplugged the computer and threw out my wine!! The little bastards. SECRETS TO A LONG AND HAPPY MARRIAGE An old woman was sipping on a glass of wine, while sitting on the patio with her husband, and she says, I love you so much, I don t know how I could ever live without you. Her husband asks, Is that you, or the wine talking? She replies, Its me talking to the wine. DON T LET aging get you down. It s too hard to get back up! I DON T have an attitude. I have a personality you can t handle. I REALLY think tossing and turning at night should be counted as exercise. OLD AGE is golden, or so I ve heard it said, but sometimes I wonder, as I crawl into bed. With my ears in a drawer, my teeth in a cup, my glasses on the table until I get up. As sleep dims my vision, I say to myself; Is there anything else I should lay on the shelf? The reason I know my youth is all spent? Is my get-up-and-go has got up and went! But, in spite of it all, I m able to grin, and think of the places my get up has been! DID YOU KNOW? Line dancing was started by women waiting to use the bathroom. I play golf in the low 80 s, the little old man was telling one of the young boys at the club. Wow, said the young man, that s pretty impressive. Not really, said the little old man. Any warmer and I d probably have a stroke. When my three-year-old son opened the birthday gift from his grandmother, he discovered a water pistol. He squealed with delight and headed for the nearest sink. I was not so pleased. I turned to mom and said, I m surprised at you. Don t you remember how we used to drive you crazy with water guns? Mom smiled, then replied, I remember. FROM YOUR DISTRICT DIRECTORS
Greetings everyone, Well, we are into some nice weather for riding and we hope all of you are getting a lot of miles on your bikes and having a lot of fun with other chapter members on the various rides you participated in. Why does time seem to go by so fast when you re having fun? Or are we just getting older? It is amazing to think how all our events like the PA rally, both our All Chapters and most summer chapter events are coming to an end. Andi and I are unable to make it to Wing Ding this year in Texas. Hopefully you will be making the trip and riding your Gold Wing. As of this writing, Hurricane Harvey is hitting the Houston area hard. If you are planning on being there, please be careful and watch the weather forecast and take advice from the officials in charge. Hopefully, the bad weather won t have any effect on the Grapevine area. We are hoping you have a great time and get to know many other GWRRA members from throughout the country. Hopefully, things will work out next year for us and we can attend. It s been a few years since we have been able to go. By now I m sure all of you have heard about the changes that will occur within GWRRA in So far, we have heard nothing but positive opinions about what will be happening. Change isn t always easy, but keeping a positive attitude will make the transition smoother. We will certainly keep everyone up to date with information as we receive it. By now you should have received your district fundraising tickets in the mail. Hopefully everyone will help sell all the tickets that your chapter has been given. The District has resumed the fundraiser after a taking a year off, asking everyone to sell tickets. Like in years past, the fundraiser will benefit all the district programs and your chapter treasury. We have addressed the issues with the Small Games of Chance regulations and now are working to make the fundraiser bigger and better. Hopefully your chapter will have enough points to qualify for the Roll for the Dough payback. We hear about chapters starting to crunch rides in to other chapters now to get enough points to get your chapter charter paid for by the district. You better get moving, as of this writing we only have one chapter that has enough points to get their charter paid for. Some chapters are close and hopefully they have plans to achieve the 20 points necessary. The PA District is pleased to announce that we have a new District Treasurer. With Joel and Sharon Shaffer moving to Florida, we were left with the task of finding a new District Treasurer. We would like to welcome Sharon and Ed Golanka as the new District Treasurer. If you happen to see them, give them a welcome to the District Team. I feel that they will do an excellent job. Please be safe out there and remember - ALL THE GEAR ALL THE TIME! Hope to see you soon Rick & Andi Riek Pennsylvania District Directors groundshark@atlanticbb.net (814) Home (814) Cell Go for it now. The future is promised to no one.
