************************************************************************** FROM THE DESK OF YOUR CHAPTER DIRECTORS Peggy & Ron Kratz, Chapter Directors Rainy forecasts have certainly affected many weekend rides this spring. But we managed to get a nice picnic ride in after our May Gathering to Hopewell Furnace National Park. Six members enjoyed the history video and the museum at the site and had our lunch in the shady area of the orchard. Peggy led the ride and Dale tailed. Then on Friday June 1, Pete Grillo led five of us to Rock Hall, Maryland having lunch at Waterman s Crab House on the deck overlooking the bay area. After a great lunch, we headed a short distance away and got to tour the marina where Pete has his new sailboat docked. Wow, was it incredible we all enjoyed hearing interesting details about it and we asked lots of questions.. We wound up coming home in rush hour, so we altered our route following Rt. 82. We managed to make a cool stop at Mom s Ice Cream thanks to Dennis & Sue for leading some of the way back to the Limerick area and Peggy served as sweep group racked up 255 miles for the day. It was hot, but a super day was had by all! Some of our folks are already on their journey to Americade so we ll hear their stories later. Our June Gathering is June 23 starting at 8:30 am. Weather permitting, there will be a ride after. Plan to join the fun! Mark your calendars for Sunday, June 24 Jeff Kratz will be leading us to Bloomsburg to participate in Chapter H s Dice Run and BarBQue this has been a favorite for our chapter folks for the past few years. The ride is always through scenic areas and the BBQ luncheon is really good. This is a full day of riding, food and lots of fun!!! Plan to join in send in your registration now Watch for ride details. Saturday, June 30 Bob Cox will be leading us on a 2-1/2 hour ride to Kundlas BBQ for lunch there s two meeting places 8:30 am at Harleysville WalMart Peggy will lead this group to the WaWa at Shantz Road on Rt. 100 in Fogelsville.. Bob will take over the lead from there. This will be a full day ride expect to get back home around 5 pm. KSU in Fogelsville at 9:30 am. Watch for on this one too. We ll throw in a couple ice cream meets and mid-week rides.. again, s will alert you to upcoming fun activities. See you all soon, Peggy and Ron Kratz GWRRA PA-Y CDS 3

*************************************************************************************** MEC Corner Pam Kratz, Member Enhancement Coordinator It s the time of year we all look forward to, riding season! Jeff and I haven t been out much with the unpredictable weather lately but we did make it to the District Rally in Uniontown last month and had a wonderful time. The Rally s in York next year, so we hope a lot more Y members will go. The location is awesome with so much to see and do! Whether you take classes, check out vendors, hang out, play games and socialize, or hop on your bike and check the points of interest in the area, it will be a great time. Start planning now! It s going to be fantastic! I have a quick story to share. I have a 62-year-old cousin in Florida who text me out of the blue the other day. She had just went on her first motorcycle ride and now understands why I love it so much! Of course I told her how happy I was for her, but hoped she wore a helmet and protective gear. She replied, I may be old, but would never ride without protective gear! I was thrilled to hear that, almost as much as I was to hear she was already looking forward to the next ride. That made me feel wonderful she was concerned about being safe! We talked about Biketoberfest in Daytona in the fall. She s interested in going and I hope to see her there. It s funny how motorcycling can bring people together. It s also an encouraging reminder that people can start riding or co-riding at any age. I ve been lucky to ride with the same person for many years and cherish every moment we ride together. It s our favorite pastime and a great way to release all those built-up stressors. I m sure you know what I m talking about. In keeping with the socializing theme, our next informal dinner is Monday June 11, 6:30 at Pizza Como and PC Pub. Hope to see you there! Keep checking the website for upcoming rides and events, and let me know if you have any membership questions or concerns. Pam Kratz Be safe and see you soon! 5
*************************************************************************************** Chapter B s 2018 Spring Fling Attending was Ron & Peggy from Chapter Y, while Ben & Pat Robinson from Chapter A were there. 11 *************************************************************************************** From the Web Side Dan Reisinger, Webmaster Hello Chapter Y! I have always had a respect for those caregivers who dedicate their lives to caring for the handicapped, the frail, those who have psychological issues, those who have physical issues, and those who are even in recovery from surgery. But when you have a chance to walk a mile in their shoes, you gain even more respect for those gallant individuals. This has been the case with Joan and I for the last few months. Thankfully, she is having good days and they are increasing. Joan and I want to thank everyone who has sent us cards and we know we feel your thoughts and prayers at this time. I will not be getting as many miles in this year as I did last year and I am not going to be happy about that! LOL. I have been learning more about my new Garmin Zumo 595LM and I must say I am IMPRESSED! I have a scheduled switch with Montgomery Cycle Center to move the current Garmin Zumo 660 to my Vulcan 750 and install the 5995LM on the Gold Wing. I am looking forward to making one of those ADVENTUROUS RIDES! You know it is one thing to read articles about this ride and that trip and another to LIVE that ride and have that AWESOME TRIP and that is what I am waiting to find out. Will that adventurous part be a ride or AWESOME trip! I do like how it announces curves ahead, changes in speed limits, and other road changes. It took a while to get use to the dinging LOL. I have been adding the addresses I have stored on the 660 I should have called on one of my grandsons before I started because it I am sure they could have found the way quicker than I did LOL. I do have to admit it and I do this very reluctantly after I found the way to enter and save the addresses it was easier than the 660. I have loaded my music so now I can have my route tracked, listen to my mp3 files, and have the upcoming turns announced. The other advantage is I have the life time maps and Garmin has already updated them twice. I guess the first update was to bring me up to date to the purchase date and then the current quarter updates. I will have to remember to update both of them more regularly. So as soon as I have my 595 mounted on my Gold Wing, I am going to see how many curves I can whip up on a ride so look out for that report (and if you join up maybe our ride will be more than a ride or another trip I m looking at AWESOME! ). Dan Reisinger 11
*************************************************************************************** Pennsylvania District Directors Harold and Diane Jackson It sure has been a crazy spring. Is the sun going to shine or is it going to snow? Erie would like to get 1 more inch of snow to break the record and reach 200 of snow for the season. Did you enjoy your two days of spring in April? Oh yeah! Many of you were at the Officer Conference in Clearfield. It was great to see bikes in the parking lot. Thank you to everyone that attended and we hope you learnt something from the presenters, your District Team, and that you enjoyed the day. We know it was a lot of information to absorb in a short time frame. If you have any questions please feel free to ask us or anyone from your District Team. It s May! Do you know that our PA District Rally will be in Uniontown, May at the Park Inn? The last day for registration is May 4 th. If you did not register, come to the rally and purchase a day pass and enjoy a day at the rally! We have about 20 vendors, many of them new to the PA Rally. Please remember to support them especially if you want them to return another year. Our University Coordinators and Rider Education has many classes for you to attend. Thursday s entertainment is Elvis Tribute Artist, Robert Keefer from Pigeon Forge, TN. Hopefully by the time you are reading the District newsletter, the schedule for the rally will be out on PEDS and available on the District website. With summer just around the corner, we hope you are making plans to visit the other Chapters in the District. Go to a Gathering or one of the many FUN events planned! Check out the events calendar on the front page of the newsletter or go visit the District website. Also, the District Ride Coordinator is working on a couple of ride-ins using both sides of the state. Those announced will be coming out soon! Two great District events to attend are All Chapters West and All Chapters East. Did you know you don t need to be a camper to attend? Everyone can join in the FUN! All Chapters West June th Host Chapter is PA-P Registration due by June 1st Location: Bear Run Campgrounds, Portersville, PA Any questions contact Larry Meyer at gl1832@msn.com. All Chapters East July th Host Chapter is PA-B Discounted Registration due by June 16, 2018 Location: Old Mill Stream Campground, Lancaster, PA Any questions contact Jim Burr at payellowtrike@gmail.com. Speaking about visiting Chapters, we need to sign off since we are going to visit PA-I tonight. 12
soon. Hope to see you at the PA District Rally! If not there, we hope to see you at an event real Remember to always ride safe! Harold and Diane Jackson Your PA District Directors 13
*************************************************************************************** Pennsylvania District Educator... Doug Motter Hello everyone. Over the last few months, I have been writing about the Rider Education Database. After a basic introduction, I explained how to access it and read the information about your record. Then, we discussed the GWRRA Levels program, its importance, and the training required to advance through the levels. Once you reach Level IV the Master Level you may think that you have reached the epitome of safety and that you are done; no more courses or training. I d like you to know that you are not finished. The Masters Level has levels within itself. You have worked hard to achieve the Master Level, setting an example for your peers to be amazed by, and providing a model for them to follow. Once you have achieved the Master Level, consider continuing the path of motorcycling safety excellence by attaining the titles of Senior Master, Grand Master, and Life Grand Master. These achievements are awarded in five-year increments. For example: Senior Master awarded five years from date that the Master Level was achieved Grand Master awarded ten years from the date that the Master Level was achieved. Life Grand Master awarded 15 years from the date that the Master Level was achieved. How does someone continue to climb the Master Level ladder? Maintain a current status in all of the training that is required for the earlier levels. That is to say Riding course for the rider (driver) every three (3) years Co-rider course for the co-rider every three (3) years CPR/First Aid certification every two (2) years Note: The five years of time between levels refers to time while current. So, any time when the rider or co-rider is not current in his or her training or is not a member of GWRRA (because membership is not renewed) extends the time required to reach the next level of the Master Level program. I have heard a few comments from people who don t believe that the requirement to stay current are not spelled out clearly enough. My response is this: Attaining the highest level of safety is of the utmost importance. Furthermore, it is becoming increasingly difficult to expand one s horizons within our organization without current certifications in the Levels program. For instance, all trainers and instructors of the Rider Courses, Seminars, as well as the Modules must be current in their training to certify and re-certify. You may also be aware that some of the new officer positions require a current standing in rider education. 14
The bottom line: If you want to be more involved if you want to become an officer you must be current in the Rider Education Levels program. Do what is right Stay current! Remember: Be seen, and have Fun getting there. Doug Motter Pennsylvania District Educator 15
