1 GOLD WING ROAD RIDERS ASSOCIATION Northeast Region Chapter PA-S March Monthly GATHERING - First Saturday of Each Month Breakfast at 8:30 Gathering at 9:30 King s Family Restaurant Sierra Drive (in front of Target) Altoona, PA Calendar of Events Hi Gang, It s Sunday, February 25 th and guess what I saw this morning on the front lawn? Yeah you guessed it, a small flock of robins looking for worms in the lawn. I know some birds overwinter here where we live but not in that magnitude. I do realize it s still too early for these sightings. Maybe the birds know more than Ole Punxy Phil. Let s hope it means more sun, less rain and no snow at all. February 17 th found Sally and I at Steve Seltzers checking out the newly designed GL1800 and what a looker. Great design and good looks, styling beyond compare. But as always with something new there are some draw backs. No place to put a drink for operator or rider. It has Sirius radio but no antenna. Total cost for a CB about $1500. No place for highway pegs and the foot rests for the pilot are way too small. I hope as in the past that Honda and the after-market companies will come up with a solution to all or at least most pitfalls that will be ironed out. I thought I d have one in my garage by June but until things are ironed out, no dice. As I am writing this, the scheduling meeting is a part of 2018 history. As you know most of the dates are tentative and subject to change. Adjustments to the schedule can be made at our gatherings. We can add to, or subtract from, to make things more convenient. Not only that but as in the past if you come up with a place you want to go, call or Sally or I and we ll see what we can do to make it happen. So, let s all hope and pray for good weather - warm sunny days, not to hot or windy and dry. Again, I say if you re asked to lead a ride say Sure Why Not and you re on your merry way. Remember if you re the leader, you re the boss. See you on the road with all the rubber down. 2 2 Hello everyone! Let s talk about the GWRRA s Rider Education Program. There s a lot of information to share, so we are going to break the conversation into two parts. This month, we ll cover the purpose of the program as well as Level I and Level II. In April, we ll chat about moving up to Level III and Level IV of the REP. The following information is taken from the GWRRA website. Purpose The GWRRA Rider Education Program (REP) is intended to make the motorcycle environment safer by reducing injuries and fatalities and increasing motorcyclist skills and awareness. The REP does not propose to have all the answers. However, our close working relationship with the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF), as well as additional GWRRA programs and studies, has provided a wealth of information for use in establishing a comprehensive Rider Education Program. Through Commitment, Education and Application, we can reduce our accident rate significantly. Listed below are several benefits of a fully implemented GWRRA Rider Education Program at the Chapter level: Increased rider knowledge Increased rider safety skills Prevention of accidents Reduced injuries Reduced fatalities Improved general public image of motorcyclists Enhanced enjoyment of motorcycle riding The motorcycle community is already realizing many positive benefits from the GWRRA Rider Education Program. Through the efforts of the Rider Education Officers and participation of the membership and others, we will reach our goal of establishing the safest motorcycle environment possible. 3 3 Level I: Safety by Commitment - The first big step to success Level I of the Rider Education Program is also referred to as Safe Miles. It represents the commitment of the Rider and/or the Co-Rider to practice safe motorcycle operation whenever they operate their motorcycle. Safety is a state of mind which can only be attained through total commitment. Every successful accomplishment begins with a commitment to reach the intended objective. This is true of the Rider Education Program and includes a promise to learn for the sake of Rider, Co-Rider, friends and family, and others on the road. Though there is no mileage requirement to enter Level I, the commitment to safe riding is tracked by the number of accident free miles since joining GWRRA. Accident free miles are accumulated in 5,000 mile increments and may be updated at yearly intervals. Requirement: Verbal commitment to ride safely at all times. No cost to sign up. Patches available at $6.00 per participant. Receive: "Safe Miles" patch, Rider (or Co-rider) Rocker, and mileage pin. Level II: Safety by Education Level II of the REP is also referred to as Tour Rider. It represents the commitment of the Rider and/or Co-Rider to be safer motorcycle riders by taking approved motorcycle riding courses at regular intervals. GWRRA has chosen several educational training programs for the Riders and Co-Riders such as the MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) programs, the United Sidecar Association course, the CSC (Canadian Safety Council) programs, and the GWRRA's Advanced Riding courses. Completing these courses provides the foundation and skills for your quest to be a safe motorcycle rider. All recognized programs are taught by qualified and nationally-certified instructors. For the Co-Rider, we have provided an excellent seminar and "Two Up" programs to assist in their role in the safety aspect of motorcycle riding. Motorcycle education goes "hand in hand" with commitment. The "on bike" education by MSF, USCA, CSC, and GWRRA for the Rider and Co-Rider and the "off bike" education designed specifically for the Co- Rider, provide a very effective approach to motorcycle safety. This is when a REP participant truly begins to understand what the Level I commitment means and sees the value in the program. 5 5 February Gathering Joe welcomed twenty members to the February Gathering. We also had 10 guests from Chapter PA-T, Somerset. The gathering began by finishing the drawings postponed from the Winter Party. The Second Chance winners were all recipients of gift cards from Steve Seltzer Powersports, Joe Shedlock -$100, Charles Snyder - $50 and George Boyles- $50. Winners were also drawn for the 2017 Mileage Contest and Bob Koteas won a 1-year GWRRA membership. Charles Snyder won the 2017 Participation Contest and also took home a 1-year membership. Mark these future dates: Steve Seltzer Powersports is showing off the new 2018 Goldwing on February 17. Chapter S had several sign up to set up an informational table display there about GWRRA. It was decided that we would meet at Spruce Creek on Wednesday, February 21 at 5:30 for supper. The Ride scheduling meeting will be at Paesano s on February 25 at 4:30. Joe talked about our chapter s participation in the district ticket sales. Chapter PA-S sold 315 tickets and should receive $ Charles sold 80 tickets for our chapters and was given a $25 gift card. Door Prizes were won by Michelle, Rick Riek, Erin, and Pat Gunsallus. Glenn took home $45.50 from the 50/50. The Marble game is going strong. Sally pulled a black one, so she missed out on $82. Thanks to Sally and Arlene for providing this information. PROGRESSIVE DRAWING The pot was worth $60 in February. Tom Kelley had his name drawn and was not in attendance. March s pot will be worth $65. MILEAGE CONTEST 2017 Bob Koteas had the winning ticket for those 16 members who participated in the 2017 contest and won a oneyear membership to GWRRA. Each rider s total mileage determined his standing in the contest and the number of tickets entered for him in the drawing. Top mileage had 16 chances, with second place receiving 15 tickets, etc. The top three participants for 2017 were Mike Gunsalles 18,160 miles, Tom Wolf 15,989 miles, George Snoberger 5,694 miles. (This is the third year that Mike and Tom have held the top two positions.) The others in order were Larry D., Bob K., Jim H., Randy R., Charles S., George B., Bill B., Joe S., Denny M., Ken C., Don F., Jake L., and Glenn S. Congratulations to Bob and his co-rider Cindy!!

6 Participation Contest 2017 January began a new year of participation points. This contest has no fee to join but a lot of rewards. By attending Chapter S or GWRRA events and gatherings you earn points and a chance to win a year membership to GWRRA and get to share a lot of good times and fun along the way. For 2017, the top finishers with the chance to win the one-year membership were: (1) Joe/Sally - 10 tickets, (2) Denny/Arlene - 9 tickets, (3) George/Jeannie and Jim/Diane 8 tickets, (4) Jake/Cheryl 7 tickets, (5) Ken/Michelle 6 tickets, (6) Bob/Cindy 5 tickets, Randy/Deb 4 tickets, Charles 3 tickets. At the Winter Party, Charles was the lucky winner of the GWRRA membership. Congratulations! 6 Spruce Creek Supper On Wednesday evening, February 21, eleven members met at Spruce Creek for supper. The tavern s good eats and pans of French Fries draw hungry appetites each day. Attending were George B., Larry, Jeanne S., Jake & Cheryl, Denny & Arlene, Randy, Joe & Sally, and Charles. Bellies were filled with ribs, winds, sandwiches, shrimp and salads. What, no Fries? Steve Seltzer s Open House On February 24, Steve Seltzer Powersports held an Open House. He received four new Gold Wings and held a luncheon/open house for the GWRRA members in and around our area. to display the new Honda Goldwing. We saw at least 3 other PA chapters in attendance, PA-W, PA-T ad PA-I. We also got to catch up with Fred and Audrey Lingle, former Chapter PA-S members. Chapter PA- S distributed information on GWRRA along with viewing the new Wing. Those attending were George and Jeannie, Mike and Pat, Bob and Cindy, Jake and Cheryl, Randy and Deb, Joe and Sally, Tom and Brenda, Charles, and Denny. The event closed with a PA snow event. Ride Schedule Meeting On Sunday afternoon, February 25, Denny & Arlene, Mike & Brenda, Mike & Pat, Ken & Michelle, Jim & Diane, Deb & Randy, Larry & Jeanne, George shared a meal of pizza and salad and ideas for riding this summer. We had a few more ideas that are not on the schedule yet. One is a Progressive Dinner to be held in the fall. A progressive dinner is simply a party where each course is eaten at a different host s house in the same evening. In other words, the guests progress from house to house. Think of it like a potluck but extended across three or four locations. The first home opens the evening with hors d oeuvres and cocktails, while the second home continues with salad and soup. The third home presents the entrée, and at the fourth house, you close with dessert. We will need three or four volunteers for this to happen. See Sally or Diane if you are willing to be a host. It should be fun!!

7 7 District Director: March 2018 GWRRA NEWS: Taken from the District Newsletter: The Pennsylvania District Raffle drawing was in February. Hopefully, you or someone you know is very happy since they had a winning ticket. Next year we hope more tickets are sold and it won t be necessary to have an additional drawing at the PA District Rally. Hopefully you have had a chance to see and sit on the 2018 Goldwing. Most dealers have had the new wing in their showrooms however, the motorcycle is selling quickly. Maybe you are one of the luck ones that have a new wing in your garage. It is almost time to get those great machines back out of storage. Remember to do all the maintenance that you have learned about over the years, it will payoff on the long ride. It won t be long before we will see you at a chapter gathering, event or on the road.
